Kata tawadhu berasal dari kata kerja lampau (fi’il madhi) yakni yang berarti

 wadhu’ adalah rendah hati, tidak sombong, lawan dari kata sombong atau

sum’ah ingin diketahui orang lain amal kebaikan kita. Pengertian yang lebih dalam adalah
           
tawadhu’ adalah orang yang menyadari bahwa semua kenikmatan yang didapatnya berasal

