Summary of the Wat Photharam Manuscripts
There are many palm leaf scriptures at Wat Photharam, and most are
Buddhist scriptures. They are composed of the Tripiṭaka, commentaries
Subcomentaries, Yojanā, gaṇṭhī, Anthology, Pāli Gramma, and written
sermons. The manuscripts can be divided into four main Thai books:
Phra Vinaya Piṭaka, Phra Suttanta Piṭaka, Phra Abhidhamma Piṭaka, and
Phra Saddavisesa.
1. Phra Vinaya
The Phra Vinaya Piṭaka is a book recording the teachings of Buddha.
Most of the teachings consist of the guidelines for Buddhism. If anyone
acts unaccordingly, then it is considered a Buddhist offense. Therefore
the Phra Vinaya Piṭaka is very important as it prevents religious
followers from causing disgrace to the religion. The Phra Vinaya Piṭaka
can be divided into five main groups:
Mahāvibhaṅga or Bhikhuvibhaṅga is composed of the 227 prayers
that the Buddhist monks must recite on the 15th day of each month which
consists of two books: Ādikamma and Pācittiya.
Bhikkhuṇīvibhaṅga is composed of regulations that Buddha
imposed on Bhikkhuṇī, consisting of 311 regulations.
Mahāvagga describes major Buddhist affairs and activities. There
are 10 categories.

Culavagga describes minor Buddhist affairs and activities. There
are 12 categories.
Parivāra is an analysis and a clearer detailed expansion of the Phra
Vinaya Piṭaka
Buddhagosa composed two commentary of Vinaya Piṭaka. The first
is the Samantapāsādikā, which is an commentary detailing the five Phra
Vinaya Piṭaka described above (Bhikhuvibhaṅga, Bhikkhuṇīvibhaṅga
Mahāvgga, Culavagga and Parivāra). In addition, the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī
which is a description of the Patimokkha.
In addition, there was also the composition of more expansion
books explaining the Phra Vinaya Piṭaka, such as the Sāratthadīpanī and
Vajirabuddhi, expanding the Phra Vinaya.
As for the palm leaf scripture books found at Wat Photharam, they
can be set into the following categories of Phra Vinaya Piṭaka (as follows).
Phra Ādikamma
The Phra Ādikamma is the first book of the Mahāvibhaṅga
composed of the “sikkhāpada” (Buddhist precepts). There are nineteen
sikkhāpada in total. The Ādikamma manuscripts found at Wat Photharam
include both the Phra Ādikamma and the Yojanā, consisting of:

Mahāvagga
Mahāvagga is the third book in the Vinaya Piṭaka. The Mahāvagga
describes the major proceedings of the sangha. The Mahāvagga found in
Wat Photharam consist of the Aṭṭhakathā, Ṭīkī and Culagaṇṭhī as follows:

Culavagga
The Culavagga is the fourth book of the Phra Vinaya Piṭaka. It
concerns the minor proceedings of the sangha and is comprised of twelve

The Parivāra is the fifth book in the Vinaya Piṭaka, and is an analysis
from various points of view. There are 21 groups. The Parivāra found in

2. Phra Sūtra
The Suttanta Piṭaka refers to the record and collection of Buddha’s
teachings with complete sources and explanations. The Suttanta Piṭaka
is considered very important as it is the collection of Buddha’s teachings

from different places. The Suttanta Piṭaka is divided into five sections
with the categories being called “Nikāya”. The sections consist of:
Dīghanikāya, meaning “long section”. It is the section containing
the longer teachings, and contains 34 teachings.
Majjhimanikāya, meaning “middle section”. It is the section
containing the middle-sized teachings, and contains 152 teachings.
Saṃyuttanikāya, meaning “systematic section”. It is a section that
systemizes matter as according to subject, and contains 7762 teachings.
Aṅguttaranikāya, meaning “body section”, the section ordering
the teachings as according to numerical order. This section contains 9557
teachings.
Khuddakanikāya, meaning “small section”. This section
contains 15 subjects:
Khuddakapāṭha - a brief chant concerning Buddhism.
Dhammapada – brief justice chants (approximately 300
prayers).
Udāna – short justice chants, categorized by Buddha as “curse
words”.
Itivuttaka – text citing Buddha as the source of the text.
Suttanipāta – the collection of miscellaneous chants
Vimānavatthu – stories of heaven.
Petavatthu – stories of Pret.
Therakathā – the proverbs of Phra Thera and his disciples
Therīkathā – the proverbs of Phra Theri
Jātaka – proverbs that aid storytelling.

Niddesa – expansion of the proverbs and chants in Sutthanibath
Paṭisambhidāmagga – explanation of the Buddhist principles
of Sāriputta.
Apadāna – the history of Buddha and Phra Arhant.
Buddhavaṃsa – expansion of the 24 historical Buddhas.
Cariyāpiṭaka – scripture describing the benevolent practices
of Buddha.
After, the commentary was revised to include the expansion and
explanation of many Suttanta Piṭaka texts, such as Sumaṅgalavilāsinī
the commentary of Dīghanikāya and Papañcasūdanī, the commentary of
Majjhimanikāya. The expansion also included the Ṭīkā and Anuṭīkā texts
that were written to explain the many texts of the Suttanta Piṭaka, such
as Līnatthapakāsanā, the petition of Dīghanikāya and Sādhuvilāsinī
the navaṭṭkā of Dīghanikāya.

The Dīghanikāya is the texts collection of the longer chants and
prayers. It is divided into the sections, consisting of the Sīlakkhandavagga

is the work of Sirimaṅgalācārya, composed in Chiang Mai in the year of
the monkey, Cullasakkarāja 886, Buddhist era 2067. The text were later
used in the examination of Theology graduates, and it was found that
there were many copies as they were also used as educational documents.

The Visuddhimagga speaks of the “Golden Way”, the path to
enlightenment, describing arts, concentration, and intellect. It is the work

chosen texts that were considered to have special importance and
displayed in sections as composed by Phra Nandācāriya in Chiang Mai.

Buddhist Cosmology
The Buddhist Cosmology speak of the world and the universe, the
creation of universe, the continents, and describes the world in general
to show the grace of the Lord Buddha by paying attention to the differing
details of each beginning story. The Buddhist Cosmology manuscripts
found at Wat Photharam consist of:
069 Lokadipakasāra
The Lokadipakasāra were composed by Phra Medhaṅkaramahāthera
a Burmese Buddhist monk who travelled to the Lanka continent to learn
about Buddhism. He later travelled to Mataban to become the teacher of
Phra Chao Setibhanda, and then to Sukhothai till become the teacher of
Phraya lithai. He received the priest title from Arun Wasi, relocating to
Wat Pa Ma Muang (Ambavanārama).

The Cakkavāḷadīpanī are works of Phra Sirimaṅgala of Lanna
composed during the era of Phra Muang Kaew (Phra Chao Pilokpanaddatirach)
in B.E. 2063. The text are dividedin 6 sections as according to their given
names, beginning with the Panamakhata chapters, which explain the
objectives of the writing, and then division into further sections.

the Tipiṭaka, forming the Trailokaviniccchayakathā in the B.E. 2326. Later, in
the year B.E. 2345, Phrabat Somdej Phra Buddha Yodfah Chulaloke suggested
that the Trailokaviniccchayakathā composed in B.E. 2326 was inconsistent
and ordered for the second revision to be composed.

Paṭhamasambodhi
The significant history of Buddha texts in Wat Photharam consist of:
Paṭhamasambodhikathā, which tells the complete history of Buddha. The
original volume is theorized to have been composed in Lanna, and then
later expanded to Ayutthaya text. The most widely dispersed version is the

was given to the nations by Buddha. It is theorized to have initially been

Jinnamahānidāna discusses the desires and behaviors of Buddha.
It is hypothesized to have been written during the Lanna, during the

Mahāvaṃsa
Mahāvaṃsa is the chronicle of the Lanka continent, from King
Srivijaya to King Mahasen. The Mahāvaṃsa manuscripts found at

Madhurasavāhinī
Madhurasavāhinī or Rasavāhinī is the text discussing the cases of
charitable persons making merit and is composed of two sections, that of
the Indian subcontinent and the Lankan subcontinent. Madhurasavāhinī

The Buddhaghosācāriyanidāna is the text discussing the
history of Buddhaghosa composed by Phra Mahāmaṅgalathera. The
Buddhaghosācāriyanidāna manuscripts found at Wat Photharam consist of:

An analysis showed that the Suttantapiṭaka found at Wat Photharam
are mainly Tipiṭaka, commentaries, and other various miscellaneous
texts associated with Pāli teachings. In addition to the various scriptures
previously mentioned in the Suttantapiṭaka, there are still scriptures
that were separated or incomplete in the Suttantapiṭaka as found in the

manucripts of Wat Photharam and can be investigated further.
3. Phra Abhidhamma
The Phra Abhidhamma refers to the collection of Buddha’s teachings
that consist of purely Dhamma topics without historical backgrounds
or background information. Phra Abhidhamma is considered high level
Dhamma in Buddhism, and is divided into 7 texts:
Phra Dhammasaṅgaṇī is a collection of Dhamma text.
Phra Vibhaṅga divides the Dhamma text into various topics.
Phra Dhātukathā describes the categorization of Dhamma by
elements.
Phra Puggalapaññatti discusses the six commandments.
Phra Kathāvatthu is a collection of questions and answers about
Buddhist principles.
Phra Yamaka discusses Dhamma in pairs.
Phra Paṭṭhān discusses the 24 supporting reasons.
The composition of a commentary soon followed the original
compositions to explain the text within the Phra Abhidhamma Piṭaka, such
as the Aṭṭhasālinī, the commentary of Dhammasaṅgaṇī, Sammohavinodaī

4. Phra Saddāvisesa
Phra Saddāvisesa refers to the Grammar texts in Pāli. This scripture
is not part of the Tipiṭaka. There are many scriptures that have been placed
in this category and the can be separated into three groups:
1. Kaccāyana or Kaccāyana Vayākaraṇa is the oldest Pāli grammar
texts. It is the work of Phra Kaccāyanathera, and there are many texts
explaining the Kaccāyana, such as Phra Vimalabuddhi’s Mukhamatthadīpanī

and the Mūlakaccāyana or Kaccāyanamūlapakaraṇa, which are
Language textbooks in Thailand since ancient times.
2. Moggallāna is a Pāli grammar textbook written by Phra
Moggallānathera in the Lankan continent.
3. Saddanāti is a Pāli grammar textbook written by Phra
Akkhawangsa in Burma.
Each book has a different method of sectioning text, but mostly
consists of:
1. Sandhi classifies the text by letters and Sandhi (Samanyapitan).
2. Nāma classifies text by name, terminology, and affixation.
3. Karaka classifies according to function of the words in the sentence.
4. Samāsa classifies according to short terms.
5. Taddhita classifies by using dynamics instead of terminology.
6. Ākhyāta classifies by verbs.
7. Kitka classifies by Kitt verbs and Kitt nouns.
8. Uṇādi classifies by factors for different forms of terminology.
Each section is composed of Sutta, which is the formula or rules;
Vutti, the explaination of the rule sets; and Udhāharaṇa, which are

Mūlakaccāyana is a varied collection of texts. It includes
Kaccāyanapāṭha translated into Thai (named formulas or Sūtra) and
writes 3 lines of Kaccāyanaṭṭakathā on one palm leaf. In addition, it also
