1 INTRODUCTION

Kota Kinabalu Court Complex is a court complex located buit on a 6.25-acre site land at Punai Hill in Kota Kinabalu,
Sabah, Malaysia. The Construction of the building commenced since July, 2014 and the design combining three Sabah's
ethnic elements, namely the Kadazan-Dusun, Bajau Laut and Murut that also incorporated motifs of the country
national flower of Hibiscus and Sabah's official flower of Rafflesia. The exterior resemblance similiar to the Palace of
Justice at Putrajaya.

Further to our telephone conversation with Mr Faaris from Unit Forensic Seni Bina of JKR Architect, there is a
possibility of the leakages may develop from the joints of GFRC panel and Skylight. Due to MCO, there was no site visit
and this proposal will be based on practical photographs and drawings shared by JKR.

FIGURE 1 : PLAN VIEW OF THE DOME

Figure 1 above shows plan view of the dome, whereby the dome consists of steel structure that supporting the GFRC
panels and laminated glass of skylight on its centre. From the drawing, it shows that each joint of the GFRC panel is
sealed with PU Sealant and backer rod.

Figure 2 below shows the existing dome with Polyurea and finished by green painting by others. Water seepages also
can be idetified in surrounding flat roof mostly at joint between two different substrates as shown in Figure 3. Joints is
where buildings are most vulnerable to water ingress.

2 SIKA SOLUTION FOR THE JOINT

Sika has a long history in joint sealants, from building envelopes to interiors to below-ground structures and all kinds of
waterproof joints. All Sika products are the fruit of many years of experience, outstanding research and development
capabilities, continuous adaptation and improvement to modern construction materials and practices and state of the
art production sites. These are our recommendations in choosing a suitable sealant:

- For non-porous substrates like metal and glass, choose Sika’s innovative silicone range.
- For porous substrates like concrete, bricks and masonry, choose Sika’s advanced polyurethane sealants.
- For applications where a wide adhesion range is required like for window installations, the unique silane-

modified polymer sealants are most suitable.

2.1 FAÇADE JOINTS

The facade is the face of your building. In contemporary architecture the facade is of special interest expressed by large
dimensions, unconventional shapes and high material diversity. Joint design is demanding and prone to mistakes. For
integral joint specification, following some rough guidelines will result in a long-lasting and tight building envelope.

Width JOINT DESIGN

Depth Joint width: Must be designed according to the sealants
movement capability

Joint depth: A joint must have sufficient depth so that
backer rod and sealant fit inside

Sealant dimensions : The optimal ratio of sealant width to
depth is 2:1 for facade joints and 1:0.8 for floor joints

MATERIALS TO BE JOINED

Depending on the design of your facade, it may consist of
facade elements of different materials like concrete, glass,
metal, brick or stone, just to mention the most common.
These elements have to be sealed to each other but also to
other waterproofing products like membranes or structural
glazing elements consisting of glass, metal frame and
silicone adhesives. The sealant must show sufficient
adhesion to the materials involved in the joint and at the
same time must be compatible with all materials to avoid
discoloration, loss of adhesion over time or any changes of
properties

ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE

Depending on the design of your facade, it may consist of
facade elements of different materials like concrete, glass,
metal, brick or stone, just to mention the most common.
These elements have to be sealed to each other but also to
other waterproofing products like membranes or structural
glazing elements consisting of glass, metal frame and
silicone adhesives. The sealant must show sufficient
adhesion to the materials involved in the joint and at the
same time must be compatible with all materials to avoid
discoloration, loss of adhesion over time or any changes of
properties

APPEARANCE

Ugly joints are like scares on the facade. Therefore, when
specifying the joint sealant, the visual appearance of the
joint must be considered. Besides the color match to the
facade elements and the toolability of the sealant, there is
also staining on natural stone or streaking on glass to be
considered. Staining and streaking can damage the
appearance of the whole facade and are irreversible. In this
case stone and glass would have to be replaced. Hence, save
money by using non-staining and non-streaking products
where required

2.2 POLYURETHANE BASED SEALANT FOR GFRC JOINT

SikaHyflex®-250 Facade is a 1-component, moisture curing, low-modulus elastic joint sealant. It is designed for the
elastic joint sealing and waterproofing of movement and connection joints in building envelopes. Due to its very low
modulus, SikaHyflex®-250 Facade is also suitable for EIFS Facades.

SikaHyflex®-250 Facade

✓ Very good weathering resistance
✓ Movement capability of +100 / −50%
✓ Bubble-free curing
✓ Low stress to the substrate
✓ Very good extrusion and workability

3 SIKA SOLUTION FOR RE-WATERPROOFING WORKS

Roofs are exposed every day to hazardous conditions and can be damaged and deteriorated over time. It is the most
critical area of a building or structure which protects the users and interior from these hazards, and must be well-
selected, well-designed and well-installed to be long-lasting without fail. Sika’s roofing systems are not only durable to
wind, rain and other environmental conditions, but they also come with decades of Sika expertise and support.

3.1 EXISTING WATERPROOFING
Any damaged membrane and coating need to be removed, free from algae, fungi, plant and dirt. The
exposed surface shall be dry and free from oil and grease to receive new waterproofing system.

3.2 DEFECTS AND RECTIFICATIONS
Rectification on the defects such as cracks, deterioration of existing sealant, honeycombs, loose friable
material, and weak concrete is highly recommended to prolong the service life of this structure. The
substrate shall have a minimum of 25N/mm² for compressive strength and pull off strength ≥ 1.5 N/mm2.

3.3 RE-WATERPROOFING
Sikalastic®-853 R AP is a 2-part, hybrid polyurea, hot spray applied, crack-bridging, roof waterproofing
membrane. It requires an aliphatic top coat when applied to fully exposed roofs. Designed for the following
waterproofing applications:
- Flat and sloping fully exposed roofs to UV, protected by an aliphatic topcoat
- New construction and refurbishment projects
- Balcony and terrace decks underneath a protective layer (i.e. ballast, paving slabs, tiles)
- Waterproofing membrane for concrete, metal, pedestrian decks, stadium seating floor application
- For exterior use only

Sikalastic®-853 R AP

✓ Fast curing, seamless finish
✓ Good elasticity and elongation at break
✓ Fast application
✓ Applied by 2-component hot spray

equipment
✓ Easily detailed around complex

geometries
✓ Good chemical resistance Good adhesion

to many substrates with the appropriate
primers
