GLOBAL COUNTRY
COORDINATORS SUMMIT
MARCH 18 - 22, 2018
Tani had suggested the idea of the first ever Global Country
Coordinators Summit as a natural next step in the culmination of
all of the work that had been developing over the past 5 years for
the Starkey Hearing Foundation. Looking back we started from Tani
traveling with Jen and Skye and doing AfterCare out of the back
of their car on a dusty African road, to one team traveling from
Minnesota to country after country to 7 regional teams around the
globe and 59 countries with the WFA® Community Based Hearing
HealthCare model in March of 2018. Knowing that we had built such
an incredible team and global training system in a short time was
an intense feat and one that Tani knew should be celebrated and
brought together. We had created our own United Nations, with
80 participants from 45 countries sharing together over 7 days in a
country of tolerance and acceptance, namely Dubai, United Arab
Emirates.
Mr. Austin walked through the hotel to the training rooms, and
commented on the run down hotel they had chosen. Tani explained
that it was an effort to save money, since the cost of such a training
summit was high. He commented that bringing them all together
was a wonderful idea for the success of the training.
This even was the first time that Bill saw with his own eyes, his
vision all along. One global team. What Tani had been building and
fighting for was his legacy. His ideology and knowledge. As co-
founders and #1 volunteers, he trusted her for years to do what
she thought was right in the field, utilizing her unique skill set.
But at that awards ceremony in Dubai, he said that he could see
now, what she had been creating and fighting for and it was good
and it was right. He saw and understood and acknowledged the
value of teaching a community member the importance behind
hearing, hearing loss and hearing aids. He stood in front of the
team and spoke about the importance of each individual ear
and the ear molds. This training, for the teams to see that other
people were doing the same thing in their own countries. Learning
from each other and the most experienced teachers in the world,
enhanced the confidence of team members. This successful model
will continue to push forward changes in the world and hearing
healthcare for the future.
While success can be measured in different ways by the number of
patients, number of hearing aids provided, being able to train and
educate our team and field members and being able to improve the
quality of the work we allow for improved scalable and sustainable
community based hearing healthcare.
