SILVITA
SILVITA’S MOTHER SHARES HOW
STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION
CHANGED HER DAUGHTERS LIFE
When I was pregnant the first two months I had
rubella. For this reason Silvita was born deaf and with
heart problems. When she was 7 years old she met
Dr. Carla Rondeau who determined Silvita had a
bilateral profound deaf, we became anxious to
know she needed hearing aids and
we could not afford them.
In 1997, Bill Austin traveled to El Salvador and
donated the first hearing aids, transforming her life.
Every year that Starkey Hearing Foundation came to
donate hearing aids, Silvita was always invited so she
could have a new set.
She is doing very well, giving lectures, participating
in activities and has also won a dance contest. Among
her favorite pastimes is dancing and playing music.
She graduated as the first female architect
in El Salvador.

TANI RECEIVES CALL
WITHIN THE CALL
Tani and Bill were in India for hearing missions March and April of 2010
giving the gift of hearing with the Starkey India team in Delhi, Jaipur,
Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Kathmandu.
On April 2nd, Good Friday during the Easter weekend we were
honored to visit Mother Teresa’s House, known in Kolkata as
“Mother’s House.” St. Mother Teresa opened this free hospice in
1952, next to the famous Kalighat Kali Temple in Kalighat, Calcutta.
With the help of Indian officials, she changed an abandoned building
which previously served as a temple for the Hindu goddess Kali into
the “Kalighat home for the dying”, a free hospice for the poor. Later
on she changed the name to “Kalighat the Home of the Pure Heart
(Nirmal Hriday)”. People who were brought to the home received
medical attention from the Missionaries of Charity and were given
the opportunity to die with dignity, according to the rituals of their
faith; Muslims were read the Quran, Hindus received water from the
Ganges, and Catholics received the Last Rites. “A beautiful death,”
she said, “is for people who lived like animals to die like angels —
loved and wanted.”
It was a double blessed outing to visit there during Holy Week. All of
the Sisters of Missionaries of Charity take a vow of silence during this
very special time. Upon arrival, our group was escorted immediately
into the room of Mother Teresa’s Tomb, a sense of humbleness
overtook all other thoughts. After all our prayers and blessings, we
were told Mother Superior Sister Preeman would like to receive us.
Bill and Tani and the team walked to the upper level of the house.
Sister Preeman greeted us and said “Thank you for breaking the
silence for the children of India. I know God would want me to break
my silence today, to say, Thank You.” This was a beautiful moment
with a very special and wise nun that touched us all. This was a very
special time for Tani as she was reading Mother Teresa’s biography
and it inspired her.
In 1946 Mother Teresa received what she would later describe as
a “call within a call.” She said Jesus spoke to her and told her to
abandon teaching to work in the slums of Calcutta aiding the city’s
poorest and sickest people.
Up until this time, Tani had been supporting Bill and believed it was
his life’s work. She would tell him what he needed to do but it wasn’t
really working. While at Mother Teresa’s Kolkata, Tani received her
“Call Within A Call”, realizing that this wasn’t just Bill’s work, God was
calling her to step up and lead.
From this day forward, Tani was committed to create Bill’s model into
a simple, scalable, sustainable program. On this day the WFA® Hearing
Healthcare Program seed was planted. From here on out she was
committed to changing the world.

RAISING THE BAR
A 2010 LETTER TO SUPPORTERS
Celebrating 10 years of caring, sharing and giving!
Since 2000, the Starkey Hearing Foundation has delivered over
440,000 hearing aids, in the past decade, to deserving individuals
throughout the world. Through our travels, we have never forgotten
the smiles of the children we have helped, nor the generous hearts
responsible for that joy. For 10 years, the Starkey Hearing Foundation‘s
So the World May Hear Awards Gala has provided the necessary
funding to support over 60 missions a year. It is a wonderful thing to
provide the gift of hearing to those who, otherwise, would not have
the resources. When we help someone it visibly changes their life, a
community and the world.
As we enter a new decade, we have made a personal
commitment to raise the bar and give more than
100,000 hearing aids annually,
over 1 million in this decade.
Thank you for helping us obtain this goal. In return, we promise that
the 10th anniversary awards gala will be an amazing event. We will
celebrate the spirit of giving by honoring humanitarians, Muhammad
Ali, Steve Martin, Harvey Mackay and Sam Moore. We celebrate
the gift of sound with performances from Frankie Valli and the Four
Seasons, the Doobie Brothers and Steve Martin and The Steep
Canyon Rangers. But most importantly, we will celebrate you, for being
a blessing in our life and the lives of so many. We hope you will enjoy
so we can say we really did something right for the world as a team!
Together we are providing a greater gift to mankind
than any of us could do alone.
So the World May Hear!

GLOBAL HEALTH CHALLENGE
Starkey Hearing Foundation became a member of the
Clinton Global Initiative. At this time the Foundation
was fitting 50,000 hearing aids per year. However,
President Bill Clinton challenged Bill Austin to do more
and Bill Austin accepted the challenge and decided to
double the impact!
In September 2010, Bill Austin finalized Starkey Hearing
Foundation’s Commitment to Action, a Global Health
challenge called So the World May Hear.
THE COMMITMENT:
To fit more than 100,000 hearing aids to people in
need annually, for a total of one million this decade. In
the commitment to action, 25 countries were listed as
projected to have direct impact and Starkey Hearing
Foundation more than doubled this!
