Starkey Hearing Foundation was getting attention from the
governments in 2011, without a model.

The Uganda government saw the need and the help the
foundation was giving. They were working with Uganda
revenue. Partnering with Hope for the City (later changed
to Matter) who partnered with them and the Uganda
Revenue Services. The first lady came to the compound
and met with the Austin’s at the mission. The first lady
didn’t want to see the children. Tani and Marlee refused to
meet with her, without agreeing to see the children.

Politically this visit in Uganda was more impactful than
Marlee’s visit in Nairobi.

What does Peace sound like? For one moment in time I think SHF,
Sheba Medical and Physicians for Human Rights found out on

Day 3 in the West Bank. It sounds like everyone working, laughing,
crying and being together from all sides to help their fellow human
being. We saw the same thing in these patients face that we see all
over the world, HOPE that they are going to hear their loved ones,
FEAR that they won’t hear, then absolute JOY and incredible relief
and happiness when we succeed with the fitting of the hearing aid.
Hugging, laughing and praising God with true love in sharing that

moment of hearing with each other and across cultures.
“The Hearing Aid” - we are so use to processing these little pieces
of plastic and parts that Starkey supplies but yet here we are, the

Starkey Hearing Foundation using it as a vehicle of peace and
understanding through hearing, bringing conflicting sides together.
Maybe next time instead of three days, it is a week or two weeks

then maybe it isn’t so hard to keep the heart and mind open to a
better way for their world which is our world too. As Bill said last
night “Peace sounds like, So The World May Hear. What is in our
hearts, because we are caring, sharing and giving, for a better

world for all.”
1,085 Palestinian people with the ripple effect of thousands more

between their families and friends, not a bad three days work.
This is a good job! Thank you for being a partner in this
good and meaningful work!

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
OF PURPOSE

On December 10th, 500 friends, family and colleagues gathered
in honor of Bill Austin’s 50th year as a change-agent in the world
of hearing. For the past 50 years, William F. Austin has changed
the world — transforming a dream into a global enterprise, and
giving the gift of hearing to millions.
Speaker after speaker from President George W. Bush to
Dr. Maurice Miller, Professor Emeritus of Audiology at New York
University, to audiology pioneers Dr. Earl Harford and Dr. Roy
Sullivan - expressed their thankfulness. Each underscored the
ways in which Bill Austin’s philosophy has transformed the world
of hearing-impaired through business and philanthropy.
Dr. Lucille Beck, Chief Consultant, Office of Rehabilitation
Services at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, credited
Austin with changing hearing care for Veterans. “You caused a
generation of veterans with mild noise-induced hearing loss to
give hearing aids a try. You caused VA to be an early adopter of
technology that has changed Veterans lives.”
Says Austin, “To see the smile that comes when people connect
with hearing - there’s nothing more radiant.”
Looking to the next generation, Austin had this advice. “If you
want to be successful, don’t think about what you want - think
instead about what someone else needs.”
