Spreading Compassion and Kindness
with His Holiness Dalai Lama

His Holiness the Dalai Lama reached out and asked to come to
Starkey to see Bill Austin in June 2017. He wanted to talk to WFA
about how hearing and kindness go together. We were able to host
him at the headquarters in Minneapolis and have a speaking panel

on the importance of kindness and caring,
which was led by Forest Whitaker.

We utilized this opportunity to have employees hear him speak at
the Marriott Southwest. We also held a special luncheon and used

the proceeds from the guests to go towards the foundation.

In Mexico 2017, we were well into our way of a formalized fitter
training before each mission. Volunteers had trainings by the
regional team before the mission occurred. Tani led these trainings
as any good leader and then slowly shifted back to allow the
trainings to be done by in country or regional leads.
However, she taught by example.
When we realized that the patients were not being fit with the right
molds, Tani stepped up and into the crowd, quite literally and fit
patients with a standard mold that best fit their ears.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Penang, Malaysia

Tani went to Malaysia Sep 3-8, 2017. She held a team training with
the Asia Pacific team and went into detail, to help the team be-
come more experienced. Her presence, allows the team, the IDD

and the partners a chance to review best practices and learn from
her knowledge and experience. Elevating the WFA® CBHHC model

everwhere she goes.

VISIT TO MOTHER TERESA’S HOUSE

We had a hearing mission in India, where
Mother Teresa lived. This is where I found

my call a few years earlier. Liz, myself,
Utah State group, Todd & Wayne and
Sugata went by to visit with some of the
nuns. I wanted to connect with Mother
Superior at the compound. We were
discussing what we could do to help them

and what they could do to help us.
We were so honored to be invited and
share our mission and purpose with a
group that is so aligned in helping the

poorest of the poor.
It is such a holy

and special place.

It doesn’t matter if it is a professional athlete, celebrity, president or
citizen – anyone that comes in contact with Bill and Tani and shares
in their vision of helping the world hear, knows that it is something
enigmatic and special. This story of competing athletes shows that
to the world. Although they were playing against each other, both
Derrick Coleman and Kyle Rudolph were fighting for the same cause:
Starkey Hearing Foundation. On Week 13 of the 2017 NFL season, the

Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons faced off for the NFL’s
My Cause, My Cleats campaign.
