Out of the 102 students, Greta explained that 9 had fit issues.
Tani was surprised and impressed that Greta already knew this
information. Tani and the team that was composed of Suresh,
Nihar, Chalese, Michelle Christy fixed the minor issues and
only found 2 fit issues out of the 9.
Meeting Sister Greta helped immensely in the development of the
Phase 4 Program. You can teach kids to be deaf or you can teach
them to hear. This school became a benchmark for Phase 4 and
was mimicked in Kenya with Doris and Nancy when they opened
the Kiragoya School for follow up and Phase 3 and 4 programs.
We were able to affect a change of culture and educate on hearing,
hearing aids and hearing loss. When you find a school that thinks
all students are deaf, they don’t know there is a different and better
way for helping those children reach their full potential.

One moment can change a life forever. Few people
know this better than J.R. Martinez, for whom a series of
moments have brought him to where he is today.
In 2003, while deployed in Iraq, Martinez‘s vehicle hit
a roadside bomb. It was a moment that left Martinez
changed, both inside and out. It was a moment that
inspired Martinez to become a advocate for burn survivors
and fellow veterans, a philanthropist and a motivational
speaker. He went on to become an actor and inspired
the nation when he was named a Dancing With The Stars
champion.
Martinez joined the team in Phoenix for our Super Bowl
mission where he witnessed the life-changing impact of
the gift hearing.
“Through my own adversity in my life, I’ve learned that it’s
important for people to feel that they are not alone. When
the hearing aids are fit and the volume is just right, every
single one of those individuals understand that they are
not alone.”

Training local community leaders is a pivotal piece of
our commitment to bring community-based hearing
healthcare to the world. Having knowledgeable
partners helps to ensure the sustainability of our
efforts, and has been the primary focus for Tani
Austin.
To kick off 2015, Tani assembled an expert team and
departed for Africa to train on the model and put into
action in new ways.
The expanded model aims to train partners for all
three phases of our work, with personalization to each
groups’ specific needs.
Partners and volunteers are trained and prepared
for all pieces of our process, including hearing
screenings, the WFA® Fitting Method and AfterCare
Services.

In 2013, we met Gladys in Malawi when she needed
her hearing aid repaired. Co-Founder, Tani Austin had
been on the road doing AfterCare visits. It was 6 PM
at night and Tani and a small team had driven 2 hours
almost to the Zambia border to do some follow up. It
had been a long, hot day and Tani remembers being

fed some chicken in a bag for lunch.
Clements told Tani that a patient’s husband had
called 8 times, trying to get his wife’s hearing aids
fixed. He said he would meet them off the road, near
a police station on their drive back into town and
Tani agreed. Tani did an AfterCare assessment on
the side of the road, using her car as her office.
The faces of Gladys and her husband were somber
with worry, until the hearing aid was fixed and the
volume was turned up. It was as if she turned on the
joy in their faces with that fix. A day of AfterCare

most people just wanted to know how to get
batteries. Tani taught the Malawi team that AfterCare

isn’t scary and how to answer their questions.
AfterCare allows for sustainability.
