36 Hours
This past year, the Ybuth Group of OMC, has undergone many changes and transitions, some good and
some that could have used a little help. One of these mixed blessings has been the growth of the youth group.
Two years ago, we were three separate youth depts. (Junior High, High School, and Third Service) with 3 different
services. Presently, we are one Ybuth Dept, with three service, and along the way we have added a nice handful
of sixth grade students. Through this unification, our youth group has been able to incorporate a number of differ
ent activities into one and brought a sense of unity between the younger and older brothers and sisters. However,
one major negative outcome of this growth has been the loss of a personal touch between all our members (teach
ers and students).
So, with over 350 students and teachers, how are we going to resolve this important issue? One event we
want to utilize to help alleviate the “BIGNESS” of OMC is 36 Hours. 36 Hours is a weekend retreat organized to
provide fellowship and fun for students and teachers involved with the Youth Group of OMC. Each retreat is divid
ed by grade. 36 Hours will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the weekly Friday Night Live. Afterwards, we will head on up
to the retreat site and continue the program up there. While we are at the retreat site, time will be spent reading
the Bible, praying, playing and listening to the Word being preached. Then, Sunday morning at 7 a.m., the week
end wraps up as everyone prepares to go to church. In order to make this retreat successful, we need all the teach
ers and staff to prayerfully and wisely utitlize the time to interact with the students. It is our hope, as we spend time
with the students in each grade, in this cozier atmosphere, that relationships between teachers and students and
also between the students themselves with be strengthened and grow.
The following is a list of items that need to be accomplished before each retreat
- Dates
- Order of Program/Schedule
Camping
Scripture Reading
Devotions
Prayer/Sharing Time
Message on Saturday (led by staff)
One on One Time of Class fellowship time
- Fliers to mail to students
- Shopping/Menu
- Permission slips

Come to Me
Through this evangelistic outreach thousands of young people have been challenged to make a decision for Christ.
Come to Me draws an average of 1000 teens on each of the two evenings. One highlight of this event in the pastin-
eludes the multi-church worship team and choir. The worship team is usually made up of teens, youth workers, and
local musicians whose goal is to promote worship in spirit and in truth. The one hundred member choir was made
up of teens from all across Southern California. Another highlight were the special performances by well-known
Christian artists. In recent years, we hosted Crystal Lewis, The Kry, Kim Boyce, and Kenny Smith. The evening’s
messages were given by outstanding youth speakers such as Jim Burns, Miles McPherson, Bart Campolo, and
Ridge Burns who challenge young students with biblical and timely principles. Many young people have made life
commitment to follow Christ at these Come to Me’s.
Goal:
Equip the body of Christ (focusing on t nd youth workers, parents)

Parenting Seminar
Our focus on Friday nights is to study the word. Recently the public and private schools have raised issues that
directly challenge the Christian faith. Although students have been attending Sunday services for long period,
many have difficult time articulating what they believe. Our goal is to study the word of God so that students may
be equipped to serve God and other more effectively. Usually, staff members rotate speaking responsibilities.
Games and refreshments may accompany these evenings. FBS is designed to help students to mature in Christ.

Tuesday ME use
On Tuesday nights, we have provided topical Bible studies, open gym hours, and academic tutoring to our students.
Small number of staff commit to thisevening by making themselves available to teach God’s Word, interact with stu
dents physically through sports activities, dialogue with teens on topics such as parents, friends, abortion, etc., and
lend a helping hand with different school related work. The main purpose of this program is to provide a safe place
for students to feel comfortable. As intimacy builds, students seek counseling and genuinely ask for advise on per
sonal issues they are facing. This is the best time & greatest place to love them !

Student Servant Leadership Team
Our statement of purpose is to train youth students to be servant-leaders in the youth group. Although they already
follow the leadership and guidance of the youth pastors, staff, and teachers, students are encouraged to take ini
tiatives in serving, planning, preparing, and leading student-organized events. They normally go through at least
2 main training seminars and also meet weekly for accountability. Our goal is to produce future leaders who will
make difference in the world.

The purpose of this ministry is to ameliorate the general body of junior and high school youth boys at OMC. Its
objective is to establish an opportunity for male teachers to train and lead young boys in their relationship with God
by helping them to see God's sovereign desire for them as young men. Its purpose is not to become another Bible
study or meeting session. Rather, it is the ministry's hope that the students will have an opportunities to practice
and work out godly character.
Summer Mission to D.R.

Currently OMC represents more than 120 different schools ranging
from sr. high up to highschool. Students all 120 schools are seek
ing answers to life. Many are taring to wrong things that the world
is offering. Through establishing Christians clubs, students will
become active at their school to represent Jesus Christ. OMC’s
goal is not to run those campus groups but to visit our students and
to train them to take the leadership of reaching their campus for
Christ. Last year, as a trial, one of our staff focused on University
High. We are hoping that this ministry will grow and have a signifi
cant impact in the lives of students.
Break Mission
Our team of 20 (or up to 25) will be visit a church in one of the Indian Reservation during the spring break.
Along with Ybuth for Christ and other local American churches, approximately 50 (total) students from all over
the Southern Cal will be working together to build a church located within the reservation. The cost is very low
and it will be a good starter-kit-mission trip for first-time students.

Music
Do teenager love their music ? You'd better believe it! Just try taking away from them sometime. Life of average teenager is
saturated with music. Popular music serves as life's sound track while they drive, do homework, dance, date and play.
Any serious attempts to understand our children and teens requires an ongoing effort to comprehend popular music and the
role that it plays in their lives. It is not an easy task. A quick trip to the local record store can be overwhelming.
A synthesis of eighteen studies completed in the early 1980's compares the influence of various institutions on the values and
behaviors of 13-19 yrs. old teenagers and how this influence was shifted over time. The study showed that in 1960 the fami
ly exercised the greatest influence on teen values and behavior. Other institution of influence, in order were the school, friends,
and peers and the church. It can be said that these institutions were in agreement on basic values, thereby providing a rela
tively unified voice in terms of their influence on teenagers.
By 1980, just 20 years later, friends and peers had jumped to number one as the greatest influence of teen values and behav
ior. The family dropped to number two, and the media jumped onto the list at number three. The school dropped two notch
es to number four and the church dropped out of the top-four list altogether.
In 1990, there is an overwhelming acceptance and popularity of MTV would boost the media's influence to the top of the list.
Friends and peers, immersed in and influence to the top of the list. Friends and peers immersed in and influenced by the same
media voices, would dropped to number two; the family to number three. School would stay at number four.
Then, through these music or media teenagers values, language, hair, and clothing styles change. The parents are often baf
fled by the strange slang terms heard in the course of teen conversation. For instance, 1992 became the year of ’NOT!’ thanks
to the movie Wayne's World, and it's two rock-music junkies and their friends.
Hair and clothing styles are influenced by teen music heroes. Rap music's rise in popularity during 1992 led mainstream kids
to adopt the look of rap star Marky Mark, such as baggy pants riding almost below the hips.
Why ? Because the MUSIC has become one of the most effective TEACHERS, PREACHERS, EVANGELISTS, and PAR
ENTS of our time.
How does Music Mold our KIDS ?
* Lyrics
If you notice your teen in the car, you know that they sing along to their favorite tunes. After hearing the song only
a few times, most kids know the words.
* Visual Images
- Music Video
"The marriage between the video and music is powerful...multi-sensory input reinforces any message,
specifically by enhancing learning and recall"
* The impact of album covers and artwork
-1993 album of all time and the most talked about album.. Snoop Doggy Dogg's Doggystyle. It talks about gunplay,

drug and alcohol, profanity, violence, sexual suggestions, labels woman as whores....
* The Lifestyle of Music Performers.
- Madonna :after she came out 1985, the whole youth culture changed... little kids began to dress like her, talk like
her... and she calls herself as a sexual missionary....
• Ice Tea "Picking up girl is a lot like robbing a store..."
- Jon Bon Jovi was asked what he would do if he had one week to live
"stay drunk, eat like a pig, and sexually abuse as many woman as possible... I would over indulge myself in every
thing"...
Sexual Promiscuity
Sexual Perversion
Violence

TV and 29 acts of violence on MTV
Substance Abuse
Occult

Rebellion
Def Leppard's 1992 hit, ’’Lefs Get Rocked1' talks about forgetting their parents and party instead.
"We are not going to take it" depicts the picture of throwing the father down through the stairs and the window.
Rock Music - How much do our teens listen and watch ?
In 1985, the Parent's Music Resource Center reported that the standard teenagers listens to rock music an average of 4 - 6 hours
daily.
In the 6 years from grade 7-12, the average teen will have listen to 10,500 hours of music, just slightly less than the 11,000
hours spend in class room from kindergarten through high school.
2/3 of teenagers in this country own their own radio or television. 80 % of teenagers listen to CD's.
Television
How much TV do we watch ?
The average household in America has the television on over 7 hours a day. Households with children have the set
on for a total of 58 hours and 43 minutes a week.
The average American child aged 2-5 years watches over 27 hours of TV per week.
This means that these children who are unable to even talk straight will have spent roughly 6000 hours watching television
before they enter preschool.
에(곤 하autk •次tUtiAtx아 성Ccm公乂 1 今令7
One study conducted in early 80*s offered 4 - 5 year old kids the choice of giving up television or giving up their fathers. 1/3
said that they would give up Daddy.
Teenagers between 12 - 17 watches average of 22 hours of TV.
After time spent sleeping and time spent at school watching TV is the highest on the list on the out-of-school activ
ities.
What are we learning from Television ?
* Violence
- on an evening in early 1992, viewers watching the NBC network news were treated to another horrific piece of
videotape. The tape showed a fatal meeting at a Florida cemetery where the burial of a teenage suicide victim had
just concluded. The dead girFs father, divorced from her mother, arrived at the cemetery and angrily blamed his ex-
wife for their daughter’s death. The video showed the man pulling a gun and murdering the woman. The TV audi
ence had witnessed an actual murder.
- Phil Donahue said that he would go as far as broadcasting an execution.
Result
* Television may lead our children and teens to become immune to the horrors of violence. "So what PhilosophyH
"I've seen it all"
* Teens can come to accept violence as a way to solve problems
* It makes the kids more aggressive.
In 1960, Dr. Leonard Eron studied 875 third-grade boys and girls and discovered there was a direct relationship between the
violent TV programs they watched and their aggressiveness in school. He again examined the subjects when they were thirty
years old. Those who had watched significant amounts of violent television were more likely to have been convicted of more
serious crimes, to be more aggressive when drinking, and to inflict harsher punishment on their children.
* Sex
1952, *'I Love Lucy Show*' was showing the word ’’Pregnant” was not allowed on TV.
Now, you can see a naked person (NYPD Blue in 1993) on TV.
In 1987, study by Planned Parenthood found that there are a total of 65,000 sexual references broadcast each year
during the prime time afternoon and evening hours.
Most of the references are in the context of outside the marriage and between beautiful people.
* The family is a joke
Married with Children "describes the home as sweet hell’’, portrays the family members fighting, grumbling, and liv
ing with low values.
* No place for God
In 1982, 93 % of all TV producers and movie directors claims to have no religious preferences.

When the word 'God* appears ifs usually used as profanity.
A study of 100 episodes of network TV revealed that 1,381 speaking characters out of 1,462 had no religion.
* Good life is associated with materialism
- Good life consists of buying possessions that cost lots of money, fancy cars, nice houses, expensive clothes.
- Happiness is having many toys and teaches the wrong lifestyle.
Five Negative Effects of Media and Music on Our Kids
1. Media presents a false view of reality
What Media Say What God says in the Bible
To be worthwhile, you must be beautiful I care about who you are more than what you look like
Avoid Pain at all costs Expect suffering and exercise perseverance
Sex is recreation. There are no consequences. I give you the gift of sex for the purpose of procreation,
Everybody does it. intimacy, and expressing oneness in marriage.
Violence is an acceptable way to deal with problems Turn the other cheek. Love your enemy
It's OK to use anyone you want for any purpose you want Treat people with dignity. Love your neighbor.
Sacrifice your own rights for the good of others
Money buys happiness. Grab all the stuff you can SeeK the first the kingdom, and don't worry about things that
moth and rust can destroy.
2. Media provides heroes and role models not worth emulating
3. Media destroys our children's sense of who they are.
4. Media teaches kids that life is boring
5. Media causes Christianity confusion
The Facts about Teens and Sex
Out of 10 students sitting down, 7-8 kids will stand up when asked about being sexually active.

Why are the kids having sex ?
1. Society says, "Do it !M
Many schools are presenting and encouraging the students to wear condemns instead of remaining abstinent.
2. Kids are craving LOVE.
"I just want to be loved"
The researches have shown that teens will often use sex as a means to express and satisfy emotional and inter-per
sonal needs that have little or nothing to do with sex.
3. Permissive Parents
• where the parental discipline is lacking.
One study have shown that 91 % of girls who are allowed to begin dating at 12 will have sex before graduating from
high school
56 % of girls who date at the age of 14.

WHAT DO WE DO AS ADULTS ?
1. Love your kids.
The children today are starving emotionally. When parents don't take time to provide their kids with love, intimacy,
and affection, they drive them out of the house in search of some fake "LOVE" that might satisfy their desires.
The constant flow of intimacy and affection that is spread before them each day is like a daily feast.
One young girl who struggled for years to win the love and attention of her father entered into a relationship with a
boy that immediately became intensely physical.
2. Teach and discuss God*s sexual standards
Does Bible talk about sex ? Do parents talk about sex ?
1,400 parents revealed that less than 15 % of mothers and 8 % of fathers had ever talked to their children about sex.
3. Teach them about the many good reasons of waiting.
Physical Reasons for waiting
Emotional Reasons for waiting
Relational Reasons for waiting
Spiritual Reasons for waiting.
4. Help them to grow spiritually
Substance Abuse
Alcohol
26 % of 4th graders have drunk alcoholic beverages
40 % of 6th graders have tasted wine coolers.
by 12th grade 90% of teens have drank, 39 % will get drunk at least once every two weeks.
3.3 million 13-17 have serious alcohol problems.
Drinking and driving remains the number one killer of adolescents.
Many parents actually encourage their kids to drink
Alcohol is the leading "GATEWAY" to doing drugs.
Tobacco
1 % of all 11 yrs. old smoke regularly.
5 % of all 13 yr., old smoke regularly
75 % of all teens have smoked cigarettes at least once
19 % of seniors smoke regularly.
Drug
60 % of teenagers will have used illicit drugs at least once before finishing high school.
depressants 'hallucinogens, narcotics, designer drugs, inhalants, cocaine, cracks, stimulants, ice, marijuana...
Why are they using drugs and alcohol ?
1. Curiosity and Experimentation
2. Peer Pressure
3. It*s fun.
4. To look grown up
5. Availability
6. Family problems
7. Escape
8. Addiction
What can parents do to help their 년ds hold out
against drugs and alcohol ?
1. Take a Look in the mirror
2. Establish standards and rules.

REACHING MTV GENERATION
Blaine Bartel
%
When ministering to today's teens, we can't live on yesterday's manna. We must creatively reach youth on
their level with a fresh, vibrant message of faith so that they, in turn, can reach the generation that follows. To
youth workers: Are you communicating the good news of Christ in such a way that they can understand it? Or is
the message lost in a fog of yesteryear's methodologies?
We must teach our young people in such a way "that the next generation might understand, that children after
them, to put their confidence in God, and not forget the deeds of God, but loyally obey him* (Psalm 78:6-8).
In 1 Corinthians 9:20, 22, Paul explains how, without compromising biblical principles, he met people at their
level. Similarly, we as ministers must present the gospel to the youth of today on their level, relating to them ”
not expecting them to relate to us.
In my travels, I've had the opportunity to observe many of the youth ministries in North America. I*ve found
that the ones reaping a harvest are those that dare to put the gospel in the language of young people. How can
we speak our message loud and clear to the next generation? Here are a few ideas:
1. Make it lightning fast. The attention span of the average teen is between 30 and 40 minutes. That means
you must deliver your points quickly, creatively and straightforwardly, keeping their ears perked and their hearts
hungry.
Think about television for a moment. When you're watching TV, you experience comedy, drama, music and
more. It's exciting -- constantly moving, happening, changing. Surveys show that the average teenager watches
more than 20 hours a week of television. Obviously, something has their attention, and it's time the church
grasps some of it! We must cause teens to truly desire to seek after and know what it means to live for Jesus
Christ.
2. Make it extraordinary. There's a word we use for doing things the same way over and over. Ifs called a rut.
And remember, a rut is essentially a grave with both ends kicked out. Be open to God's creative sparks and don't
be afraid to change the way you do things. For example, does your youth room environment need to change? If
the youth room is dull, colorless and lifeless, you can't expect teens to want to come to the meeting.
Make your environment exciting with music, drama and other icebreakers and interest-grabbers - all on a
level that teens can relate to. Depend on God for creative innovation in presenting the message, an innovation
that causes excitement and curiosity in the hearts of your listeners.
3. Make it work. We must practice what we preach and preach what we practice. Youth are looking for truth
and reality. If you're talking one thing and walking and living another, don't expect them to follow. Teens must see
you as a living example of Jesus Christ, which Romans 12:1 calls Myour reasonable service." Let them see that
it's smart to serve God.
4. Make it count. Make your message count by producing change in the hearts and lives of all who hear it.
Challenge your teens to come face to face with themselves and turn everything over to Jesus Christ. Make sure
every message and event gives opportunity and purpose to young people - a chance for change and a cause
for commitment.
I once heard someone say, "Ybung people are a living message that we send to a time we will not see." Think
about that a minute. We need to ask ourselves, "What kind of message am I sending into the next generation?" If
you're like me, you may be inspired to minister to youth in a fresh new way.

from Dynamic Bible Study Methods by Rick Warren
Why should we Rave a quIct time ?
• Because we need fellowship with God
• It is our privilege as Christians
• Because we gain tremendous benefits from
I. Because we Need fellowship wlTh God
Why is daily fellowship with God so important ?
1. We were created to have fellowship with God.
God created people in His own image for the purpose of fellowship. We are the people in His own
image for the purpose of fellowship. We are the only creature in all creation that have the capacity to have
fellowship with the Creator. God made us to have fellowship with Him, and Adam had that perfectly in the
Garden of Eden before the Fall. (Gen. 2-3)
2. Jesus Christ died on the cross so that fellowship could be restored.
When Adam sinned, his fellowship with God was broken. And all of us sinners who have followed
in Adam’s footsteps cannot by nature have fellowship with a pure and holy God. But God considered that
relationship important enough to send His Son to this world to die for our sins so that we might again have
the privilege of a personal relationship with Him. And God as called us Christians to have fellowship with
Him (1 Cor. 1:9; 1 John 1:3-4)
3. The regular quiet time during Jesus’ ministry was a source of His strength.
Personal fellowship with His Father in heaven was the top priority of Jesus' life (Mark 1:35; Luke
5:16; 22:39-44) He was never too busy for it; in fact, when His ministry was the busiest, thafs when He
made certain that He kept in daily touch with the Father (John 5:30). If Jesus needed this time with God,
how much more we need it.
4. Every great man or women of God throughout history has spent much time alone with God.
Anyone who has ever been used mightily by the Lord was a man or woman of the Word and prayer.
The regular quiet time was the one thing they had in common. The common denominator between Moses,
David, Daniel, Paul, Calvin, Wesley, Finney, Moody, Spurgeon, Billy Graham, and all of the great saints of
history is that they all spent much time with God in personal fellowship. Their writings and ministries clear
ly show this. Someone has said, “If you want to find our what a man is really like, find out what he is like
alone with God.” Martin Luther, the father of the Reformations, once said, “I have so much to do today that
I must spend at least three hours in prayer." The busier he was, the more time he needed with God. If you
are too busy to have a quiet time, then you’re too busy.
5. We cannot be healthy, growing Christians without daily fellowship with the Lord.
CWCC,겨次우 必서‘公t /걋97
The quiet is not just a nice suggestion: it is a vital necessity for a child of God. It is absolutely
essential for Christian growth and maturity.
Job considered the Word of God more necessary than this daily food. (Job. 23:12) Jesus, quoting
the Old Testament, declared that man needs to live by every word coming from God (Matt. 4:4; Deut. 8:3)
Peter called the Scriptures, nourishing milk (1 Pet. 2:2) and the writer to the Hebrews thought of the Word
as the solid food (Heb. 5:14)
Have you ever gone for some time without a bath ? If you have, then you know how “sticky” you
feel after a while and how your odors get more pronounced. The Bible says that when we read the Word
of God, we are cleansed. A daily quiet time is a spiritual bath. Many Christians who would not think of
offending their friend by not bathing regularly do not realize that they can be offensive to the Lord with their
spiritual odors. (Ps. 11:9; Eph. 5:26; John 15:3)
From the above five observations, it can be concluded that if you are not having a regular quiet time...
- you are missing out on the privilege for which you were created
- you are rejecting that which Jesus died for to make possible
- youll never experience the same power and refreshment Jesus did
- you will never be used greatly by God
• you will remain a weak and sticky Christian all your life.
“But I don’t Have the time !” is an excuse we hear so often. Every person in the world has exactly the
same amount of time each week -168 hours. And you will spend some of those hours on things you think
are important. Ybu don’t have time for everything; you must make time for things that really count. It*s not
a matter of time, but a matter of priorities. What is really important to you ?
The key to making time for the quiet time is your commitment to Christ and the kingdom of God. Jesus
stated, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”
(Matt. 6:33). Put God first in your life and you will have more time. Don't let anything rob you of that time
of fellowship with the Lord. Preserve it at all costs. If Jesus Christ is first in your life, you ought to give Him
the first part of everyday. Your quiet time should be the absolute number one priority commitment of your
life.
II. Because It Is Our PrIvIIeqe as CMrIstIans
The quiet time allows us four great privileges.
• we give devotion to God
• we get direction from God
• we gain delight in God
• we grow more like God
What happens when we have a quiet time ?
1. We give devotion to God.
The first privilege of the quiet time is to give, not to get. A psalmist said,MAscribe to the Lord the
glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness? (Ps. 29:2) Another psalmist urged,
“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker4’ (Ps. 95:6)
In recent years two wrong emphasis have been permeating the American church. The first is the overem
phasis on getting: What will I get out the church, out of the Sunday school, out of doing what God says ?
It is the result of our culture’s great emphasis on entertainment, in which the people being entertained must
be satisfied. When carried over into spiritual matters, it becomes self-centered religion and is definitely not
biblical. Thafs why so much is being said today about following Jesus, but little is said about the cost of
分公,令卜ut“ 分^7化MU久t /夕97
discipleship. We offer prize to get Christians to come to church when they ought to be coming because
they love the Savior.
The other error is the overemphasis oh working for God and neglecting the worship of God. Satan, the
god of this world, has sold us a bill of goods in getting us to substitute work for worship. Most of us are so
much on the got even in doing fine Christian things, that we don’t know the real meaning of worship. Jesus
said, ^Worship the L아d your God and serve Him only.” (Matt. 4:10) Worship come before service.
We are to give daily devotion to God because God deserves our devotion. When John saw the multitudes
of heaven singing praises to God, he heard them say, aYbu are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory"
(Rev. 4:11;5:12). Because God is our Creator and Redeemer, He deserves to be worshipped and praised.
We should go to our quiet times each day our of love for God, not out of a sense of duty: “God, I’ve come
to worshipbecausedeserve to be worshipped and adored !"
We are to also give daily devotion to God because He desires devotion from us. Jesus told the woman at
the well, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spir
it and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks" (John 4:23). God seeks our worship !
A verse that is often used in evangelism, and properly so by way of analogy, was actually written in con
text to Christians in a lukewarm church. Here Jesus is saying, “Here I am ! I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will go in and eat with him, and he with Me” (Rev. 3:20).
The Savior desires fellowship with us ! He stands outside the doors of our lives wanting and longing to
have fellowship with us and to receive our worship. He is like the ideal human father who wants to spend
time with his children.
How long has it been since you took time alone with God just to tell Him that you love Him ?
2. We get direction from God.
The second privilege of the quiet time is for us to get direction from God for our daily lives. This was David’s
attitude in life; “Show me Your ways, O Lord, teach me Ybur paths; guide me in Ybur truth and teach me,
for Yb니 are God my Savior and my hope is in Ybu all day long.” (Ps. 25:4-5; 40:8; 73:24; 143:10; Isa. 42:16).
The quiet time is a great opportunity to receive counsel from the Lord.
In this fast paced age of hurry, we need a time when we can slow down, collect our thoughts, evaluate
what is happening around us, and get direction from the One who knows the end from the beginning.
Pascal once said, “All the troubles of man arise from his inability to sit still? On a number of occasions
Jesus invited His disciples to “come apart" with Him for a while that they might recuperate physically and
spiritually. Vance Havner had said, ulf you don’t *come apart* periodically, you will literally come apart!” It
is also interesting to note in the Gospels that often Jesus explained His teaching to the disciples when they
were alone with Him (Mark 4:34)
When we get direction form God in our quiet times, He causes us first to consider our ways. We take the
time to assess our lives. Thafs what David did: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know
my anxious thoughts. See if there is nay offensive way in me, and lead me in the way of everlasting” (Ps.
139:23-24) Are you keeping track for the Lord ? Are you growing daily in your spiritual life ? Have you
allowed some sins to pile up in your life > Take these and other similar questions and try to look at your
life from God's point of view. This will help you keep God's perspective on things, for many times you get
so caught up in the necessary details of life that you lose the overall picture.
Also the quiet time is a time to commit our day to the Lord. Solomon urged, “Trust in the Lord with all your
heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your
paths straight (Prov. 3:5-6) Ask God to show you His will for the day; commit your schedule to Him and
ask the Lord to guide you in the upcoming activities. You might even ask Him to help you budget your time
so you can get more done (Ps. 90:12). Ask Him to help you sort out the necessary from the unnecessary
(1 Cor. 10:23)
It is only as you are in touch with the Lord daily that you will see life’s problems and opportunities from the
right perceptive. Only through your meeting with Him will He be able to guide your life more effectively. One
of the most important requests you can make while committing your day to the Lord is to ask him to pre
pare and direct you to someone to whom you can witness that day. Let God pick out your witnessing oppor
tunities.
3. We gain delight in God.
The third privilege of the quiet time is to enjoy God and simply to bask in His presence. David told God,
uYbu have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Ybur presence" (Ps. 16:11). The
secret of real joy is knowing God Christians are miserable and lead unhappy lives because they never
spend time in God’ presence.
Do you really know Christ, or do you merely know about Him ? To know Him intimately was the Apostle
Paurs number one priority in life. How is it with you ?
In order to get to know someone intimately and to enjoy him personally, you must...
• spend quality time with him
• communicate meaningfully with him
• observe him in a variety of situations
These same criteria apply in getting to know and enjoy God too. Remember that it is hard to have a love
affair in a crowd; you need to get alone with that one person. Thafs why the Bible speaks of our relation
ship with God through Christ as a love relationship. In fact, it is called a marriage-He is the bridegroom
and we in the church are His bride.
Are you anxious to get alone and share intimately with Jesus ? If not, you should be. Make you goal to
meet Jesus in your quiet time, not just to learn about Him, but actually to meet with Him. Expect to meet
Him each morning, for He’s there waiting to meet with you !
Sometimes we get so busy working for God or with our own affairs that we forget just to love Him. God
once said through His prophet, MDoes a maiden forget her jewelry, a bride her wedding ornaments ? Yet
my people have forgotten Me, days without number (Jer. 2:32) We particularly forget God when we fail to
read the iove letter He was written to us - the Bible.
The best way to get to know the Lord is to spend time alone with Him, sharing your thoughts with Him in
prayer and reading over and over again the love letter He has written you.
4. We grow more like God.
The fourth privilege of the quiet time is the opportunity to grow in our spiritual lives, becoming more
and more like Jesus Christ. When God created the human race, He “created man in Him own image, in
the image of God He created them" (Gen. 1:27). His purpose for man was that he might become like God
“in [his] likeness** (Gen. 26). But man chose to become like the devil instead (Gen.3) So in redemption God
went back to His original purpose. He wanted His people again to be like Him, like Jesus Christ. “For those
God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, that He might be the first
born among many brothers" (Rom 8:29)
dᅀ 分e Uk公 分여公4 ?
First, we are made holy - like God - through the Word. Jesus in His high priestly prayer asked the
Father in He would, “sanctify [all believers] by the truth; Ybur word is spent in the Scripture, getting
to know God intimately.
公_次(化 가O公仏 다와 'TKcmuoL 1^7
Second, daily growth comes as the Word builds us up. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is use
ful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training ih righteousness, so that the man of God may
be thoroughly equipped for every good work** (2 Tim. 3:16-17). As we are taught in the ways of
God, rebuked when we go astray, corrected to go back to the right path, and trained in righteous
living, we grow in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Third, we grow as our minds are transformed from thinking the world’s way to thinking God’s
thoughts after Him. Paul wrote, “Do not conform any loner to the pattern of this world, but be trans
formed by the renewing of you mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-
His good, pleasing, and perfect will" (Rom 12:2). And this again comes only through Scripture,
God's revelation of His perfect will for us.
Fourth, through the promises of the Word we become more like God. Peter wrote, “His divine
power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who
called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and pre
cious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the cor
ruption in the world caused by evil desires." (2 Pet. 1:3-4) We can only know Him and appropriate
His promises through the Word.
Fifth, we grow through the help given us by our Christian leaders, who teach us the Word. Paul
said that God gave us gifted leaders in order “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that
the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the
Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." (Eph.
4:12-13)
Finally, we become like Jesus as we spend time contemplating Him. Paul wrote, °We who with
unveiled faces all reflect [or contemplate] the Lord's glory, are being transformed into His likeness
with ever-increasing glory, which come from the Lord, who is the Spirit" (2 Cor. 3:18). This change
is gradual; as we keep on contemplating Jesus Christ in His Word, we grow to be more and more
like Him. It is not a five-second glimpse of Jesus that changes us, but a constant contemplating
of Him over a period of time.
The more you are with a person, the more you become like him. Have you ever seen a couple
happily married for 50 years ? They are so much alike by now ! They like the same things, they
eat the same things, and sometimes they even start looking alike. The ultimate goal of the quiet
time is for us to grow to be just like Jesus Christ.
III. Because We GaIn Tremendous BeneNts From It.
The final reason we should have daily quiet time is because of the tremendous results it brings to our lives.
God has promised many things to those who take the time to get to know Him through the Word. What
are the results of having a daily quiet time?
-Joy (Pss. 16:11;119:47, 97, 162; Jer. 15:16) - The most joyful Christians are those who meet with God
daily.
-Strength (Isa. 40:29-31) - As we meet with the Lord daily, we get our spiritual “batteries” recharged and
gain the perspective of an eagle, seeing things as they really are.
-Peace (Ps. 119:165; Isa. 26:3; 48:18; Rom. 8:6) - We get peace of heart only when we have the assur-
ance that God is in control of all things. This comes only through His Word.
-Stability (Pss. 16:8-9; 46:1-3; 55:22; 57:7) - When we have a regular time of Bible reading, prayer, and
worship, our lives become stable; the quiet time eliminates the Hspiritual roller coaster type of living.
-Success (Josh. 1:8) - The only promise of success in the bible is connected to the condition of daily med
itation on the Word of God.
-Answered prayer (John 15:7) - As we “remain” in Christ - spending quality time with Him - daily, we can
claim this promise and be assured that our prayers will be answered.
-Others will notice the difference in our lives (Acts 4:13) - People will know that we have been with Jesus;
it is going to show in our lives. And being with Jesus is what will give confidence and boldness to us in
witnessing about Him to those who do not know Him.
IV How to Have a MEANiNqful Time wiTh God
If we are convinced that a quiet time is needed in our lives, then how do we go about having one? We
may become motivated to do it, but may not know how. We need to consider four essential elements of a
good quiet time:
-Start with the proper attitudes.
-Select a specific time.
-Choose a special place.
-Follow a simple plan.

deer. A deer is a very clean animal, and so the pig. with his new
heart would love to be clean, and would never wallow in the mud
again.
Of course, this is only a fable, but it is a picture of what God has to
do with us. Like the little pig, we have a heart that loves sin. God
says that this old nature cannot please Him. No matter how care
fully we train it, when it sees sin, it breaks loose and goes and wal
lows in it. God does not try to fix over this old nature, but tells us we
must have a new one
We cannot make this new nature ourselves. Try as we may, all we
can do is to polish up the old nature, but we cannot touch the sin
part of it. It is like painting a pump which is over a well of bad water.
Painting the pump makes the pump look better, but it does not make
the impure water pure. This is why God cannot accept those who
do not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, no matter how hard they try
to do right. They cannot please Him. They need the new nature,
and only God can give them this new nature.
God says first that we are born again by His Word (I Peter 1:23).
The Bible is not like other books-it is alive, for it can give life. It tells
about the Lord Jesus Christ, and as we believe it, we are born again,
and receive this new nature. In John 1:12-13, God tells us how we
can become His children. We are born again of Him. It is He who
gives us this new life. When you were born again the Lord Jesus
Himself gave you your new life, just as when you were born the first
time, it was your father and mother who gave you life. That is why
God is the Father of those who believe in the Lord .Jesus Christ.
This new nature is not just patching our old nature God ony wants
it to die. not to be fixed up. But the new nature is His life-the Lord
Jesus Himself coming to live in our hearts This is why we are
called "new creatures*' when we are bom again (II Cor. 5:17). Over
and over we read that Christ is our life. Paul said, "For me to live is
Christ" When we realize that our new nature is the life of the Lord
Jesus in us, we shall want more and more to let others see Him.'
NOTEBOOK SUGGESTION: Review the iesson as they draw; try to get the chil
dren to suggest their own illustrations; one may say "painting a cup will not change
the dirty water in it to clean water, "putting on a pretty frock will not change a girl
with a mean disposition to a girt with a sweet one, * etc. Have them draw what they
suggest. Sefect a yerse from the fes추on to write beneath their picture.
