The Primary Child (6-7 years)

PHYSICAL
Small mu$de coordination is developing and improving. Girls are ahead of boys at this $tage of
development

SOCIAL
The child is concerned with pleasing his teacher. He is struggling to become socially acceptable to the
peer group. However, the 'Golden Rule* is a tough concept Being first and winning are still important
Taking turns is hard. This improves toward the end of the 7th year.

Ulis
There is an intense eagerness to learn and they ask lots of questions. The child likes to repeat
stories/activities. There is a limited concept of timethinking is here and now rather than past or
future. Lktening/q>eaking skills are developing rapidly. Girls are ahead of boys. The child
thinks everyone shares his view. He sees parts rather than how the parts make up the whole. He
thinks very literallij.

The child can sense tixe greatness, wonder and love of God when helped with visual and specific exam­
ples. The non-physical nature of God Is baffling, but omnipresence is generally accepted because par-
ents and teachers communicate this belief by tiieir attitudes and actions. The difld can think of Jesus
as his friend, but needs specific examples of how Jesus expresses love and care. He can comprehend
talking to God anywhere, anytime in his own word% and he needs regular opportunities to pray. He can
also know that the Old Testament tells what happened before Jesus was born and the New Testament
tells of His birtK work on earth and return to heaven and the works that occurred afterwards on earth.

Teaching Tips for Primaries

PHYSICAL
Use activities that involve cirtting and writing skills; give children opportunities to move about; vary
the activities. Children can sing rounds with some guidance.

EMOTIONAL
Be sure each child in your class KNOWS and FEELS you love him. Show genuine interest in him and his
activities and accomplishments〉Learn children's names and use them frequently.

SOCIAL
Provide opportunities for children to practice turn taking. Help each child accept others' opinions and
wishes and to consider the welfare of ihe group as well as his own. Call attention to times when the
group cooperated successfblly, A child's social process moves from to you to we.

INTELLECTUAL
Consider 산ie skill/ability levels of the children. Some can handle reading/ writing activities and others
■^a상 do better with music or art Use pictures to help them understand Bible times and people. Avoid

The Middler CMld (8-9 years)

PHYSICAL
Now have good large/班nail muscle coordination. The girls are still ahead of the boys. Children can work
dfligentlxj for longer periods but can become impatient with delags or their own slowness.

EMOTIONAL
The age of teasing, nickname公 criticism and increased verbal skills to vent anger. At 8 상 ears the child
is developing a sense of fair playj and a value system of right and wrong. At 9 yjears he is searching for
identity.

SOCIAL
The desire to have status within the peer group becomes more intense. The child decreases dependence
on aduks.

INTELLECTUAL
The child Is beginning to realize there may be other valid opinions. He is becoming a reasoning person;
beginning to think in terms of *the whole* he thinks more conceptually and has a high level of creativi­
ty-

He is beginning to sense the need for God's continuous help and guidance. He can recognize the need
for a personal Saviour. There is a desdre to become a member of God's family. Children who indicate an
awareness of sin and concern about accepting 3es\is as Savior, need careful guidance withoixt pressure.

Teaching Tips for Middlers

PHYSICAL
Give deai^ specific instructions and allow children more independence in preparing material公 Lot of
them assume the responsibility for dean-up.

A marvelous opportunity for the teacher to present a Christian model at the time the child is

eagerly searching for a model! Provide experiences that encourage his creativity and his self­

SOCIAL
This Is a good time to use activities where pairs of children can work together.

INTEUECTUAL

Encourage them to look up Information: discover their own answers to problems; use art, music, and
drama. Help children learn Bible information and concepts. Allow them to use their Bibles by finding

reading portions. Bible learning games are good for this age and these are good
rs for Bible memorg work. Help children understand the meaning of the verses they memorize.

Help them understand 公w forgiving nature of God. Provide opportunities to make choices and decisions
based on Bible concepts.

Age Level Characteristics
The Junior Child (10-11 years)

PHYSICAL
They have a mastery of physical skills; are active and curious; seek a variety of new experiences.
Physical changes cause 11-year-olds to tire easdly.

EMOTIONAL
There Is a good emotional balance in a IO-year old. He is usually cooperative, easy-going, content
friendly and agreeable. The 11 -year-old is experiencing unsteady emotions. Peer acceptance is vitally
important

SOCIAL
Friendships and activities witii age mates flcnarish. Children draw together and awag from adults in the
desire for independence. The child wants to be a part of the group and does not want to stand alone in
competition

INTELLECTUAL
Theg are verbal Making ethical decisions becomes a challenging task They are able to express ideas
and feelings in a creative way. At 11 years tiie child begins to reason abstractly. He begins to think of
himself as an adult and questions adult concepts公 Hero worship is strong.

*Ihey can have deep feelings of love for God; can share the Good News* with a special friend and are
capable of involvement in evangelism and service projects. The child may seek guidance 分om God to

Teaching Tips for Juniors

PHYSICAL
10-year-old bogs will still participate in activities with girl公 but by 11 상ears old they tend to

10-11-year-olds need a loving, accepting relationship with dgnificant adults They 次ill need to share

They no longer think aloud and so, keeping the communication open is prime. Listen, assk
questions and avoid being judgmental*

INTELLECTUAL
Include lots of opportunities for talking^ questioning and discussing. These are good 상 ears for poetry,
Kngs, drama, stories drawing and painting. Give guidance in a way that does not destroy the child's

forts in becoming a linking setf-directed person.

SPIRITUAL
Help children develop a feeling for communication with God through prayer. Provide opportunities for
children to participate in prayer, Bible reading and worship. Involve them in work and service projects.

you work 산)rough the lesson. Work through the lessons so that you will not be caught unaware by an

BE PHYSICALLY PREPARED
Be sure to have all of your materials ready before you meet with your group. Have everything ready,

SET STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOR
Your group should expect a consistent level of order. Set up degrees of consequences for
verging degrees of poor behavior. Communicate these clearlg and earlg to your group and follow
through on what you say.

KEEP THEIR ATTENTION
Don't presume the right to be heard* earn it by modeling Christ and challenging your students to
follow Him. Be expressive and use plenty of variation in your tone of voice. Reflect the enthiwiasm of
the lesson so 公iat your students will also be excited. Keep good eye contact with the youth and insist
that they keep their eyes on you. Use praise whenever possible and keep negative comments to a mini*
muia but use them if necessary. Remember: your goal is to teach and you can't teach people who are
not pacing attention.

ASK tOTS OF OUESTIONS
This is a good way to maintain student involvement and to evaluate the students comprehension
of ihe lesson. Ask all kinds or questions. Open ended questions are fun because they do not call
for only one right answer. You can affirm everyone's answer with an open ended question. Be
creative, and use this opportunity to make the students feel important. Even a wrong answer can
be affirmed by saving, "Sood, you’re thinking* The more positive you are, the more your
students will want to participate.

GET PERSONAL
Don't be a分aid to use personal illustrations from your life. This will help yoior students know you
better and feel doser to you. If you open up to them they are more likeiy to open up to you.

How to Plan and Organize your VBS
(Administrative Preparation for VBS/Retreat)

INTRODUCTION

So, youfre about to start preparing for your VBS or retreat for this summer. Well, rm
sorry to say and discourage you from the beginning by saying "you're too late.” It's already
going into the middle of May so we only have a couple of months to plan and prepare. Unless
you already have majorthings such asplace, speaker, and budget set up, iVs going to be
pretty tough to pull this through. Starting early Is the most important lesson we need to
remember in any preparation. Butin any case, / wish this quick overview of the preparation
process for VBS does some good to you maybe for next year if not this one, and / hope we
can be benefited from one anotheras we share our experiences and ideas.

I. PHILOSOPHY OF ADMINISTRATION IN MINISTRY

1. Why Need Administration in Ministry? Organization
Effectiveness
Problem Proof / Guarding

• Bigger the event is, more preparation and better administration are needed.

2. Two types of ministers / workers - Motivational type (Charisma) - people ministry
Organizing type (Administration) - paper ministry

Best type = M + O

3. Aspects of Ministry Event-Goal. Content, People, Jesus Christ
i. Goal Oriented Event - What to be achieved? # of people drawn
Introduction to Missions
A fun summer fellowship
Study of a certain topic
Content must be matching with the goal - Theme, Curriculum,
Program, Activities.
Materials. Settings, etc.
ii. People (Relationship) Oriented Event-What kind of atmosphere?
Know the participants - faith, age, knowledge, situations, needs
Select Emphasis based on the participants:
Fellowship, Training, Learning, Experiencing, etc.
Create Atmosphere that is most suitable for the participants:
Serious, Casual, Fun, Strict, etc.

II. ORDER OF PREPARATION

Its important to prioritize what to prepare first in terms of time and budget

III. TO MAKE YOUR VBS A LITTLE BIT EXTRA SPECIAL THIS YEAR...

1. Make your own materials as much as possible....the personal touch
2. Plan for a couple of "Surprise Program.*...that are not in the program
3. Think of an unique idea to decorate the VBS place.
4. Make each day a little bit different..setting, color, leader, etc.
5. Do something silly like not allowing teachers to wear any make-ups.
6. If you have enough money, hire a cartoonist to draw each kid's portrait
7. Any other ideas?

IV. DOCUMENTS YOU NEED TO PREPARE...

1. General Plan - an overall purpose and plan of the event to present to church
session or the education committee, (yellow copy)

2. Overall Budget - an overall calculation of expense and income. Need to do some
research and calculating, (blue copy)

3. Activity Permit - Parent's permission slip that could be used in emergency or
legal situations. Many insurance companies and all medical
institutions require this statement (green copy)

4. Insurance Policy - Many VBS/Retreat sites require this document before the contract
becomes valid. Even if you're having VBS at your own church,
this is a good document to have it ready in case of accident

V. AFTER THE VBS..^dministrative Follow-ups.

1. Clean the place/site very nicely. If it was your own church, you own to yourself. If
it was a retreat site, you owe it to other groups, (not to mention Korean church
credit)

2. Make out a post-event financial report as soon as possible. Turn it in to the church
treasurer with all the receipts and change. If there are any reimbursements to
give out. do not delay.

3. Sent out cards or gifts to the site, speaker, and all the volunteer staff.
4. Have at least one evaluation meeting with the staff (perhaps treating them to a

dinner) and keep a record of the meeting to be used in planning for the next
year's.
5. Plan a couple of events where you could ask about how the participants are doing
with the application from the VBS.

VI. CONCLUSION...The Attitude of Preparer

1. Prayerful: This is the LorcTs ministry. More than anything else, we need the

guidance of the Holy Spirit

2. Thankful: This is a spedal privilege to partake in the Lonfs ministry.

3.. Cheerful: As the leader of this event, everyone is watching you. You set the

atmosphere and you control the mood. Be cheerful, and then this will

be a pleasant experience for you and the others.

4. Patient There is no such thing as "problem-free-event* As you go through this long

process of preparation, there will be something go wrong. Be patient

Take the problems as positive challenges and build your character

through them. You'll be glad and others will appreciate you.

5. Wise: Administration in any business or ministry is about being wise - making right

decisions, distributing different talents in proper positions, and dealing

with urgent situations in prompt actions. We need to be mature in our

wisdom to be preparer/director of this event God calls for faithful and
