CENTRAL LITHUANIA
Rolling hills, swathes of untouched ancient forest and
thousands of clear lakes characterize Central Lithuania.
Much of the land is protected, allowing birds, animals and
plants to thrive. While Vilnius and Kaunas are the region’s
most vibrant cities, the less-visited towns and villages of the
region, with their beautiful churches and farmsteads, also
attract a number of visitors.

1 Trakai Island Castle
A formidable stronghold for any invader to overcome, the
Island Castle in Trakai was built as a seat of power during
the reign of Vytautas the Great and completed just before
the Grand Duchy’s crushing victory over the Teutonic Knights
at the Battle of Grünwald (see p216). As Vilnius grew in
importance, Trakai lost its significance and was destroyed
by the Cossacks during the 1655 Russian invasion. In the
late 19th century, the elegiac island ruins captured the
imagina tions of poets and painters during the national
revival. Oddly, it was the Soviet authorities who, in the Dry moat, separating the main castle from
1950s, sanctioned the reconstruction of this monument the outer courtyard
to Lithuania’s glorious past. It was completed in 1987.
. Lakeside Walk
One way to appreciate Trakai’s
idyllic lake-filled landscape
and the scale of the castle’s
construc tion, is to take the
pretty walk that follows
the shore of the island.
KEY

3 The Ducal Palace’s keep, which
is 30 m (100 ft) high, served as the

The Karaim of Trakai
The Karaim, a community of Turkic settlers practising
a particular kind of Judaism, lend a distinctly exotic
flavour to Trakai. Their ancestors were taken prisoner
by Vytautas the Great during his military venture to
the Crimea in 1397, and subsequently served as royal
guards. The Karaim have maintained their customs
and traditions. Their characteristic wooden houses,
each typically with gable ends and three windows
facing the street, the Karaim synagogue or Kenesa
and the Karaim Museum, are all on Karaimų Street. Graves in the Karaim Cemetery, partially

WESTERN LITHUANIA
Isolated for centuries, the little towns and villages of Žemaitija,
the local name for the low-lying land of Western Lithuania, have
a mystical atmosphere. Rustic wooden farmsteads and
settlements are nestled between knolls and marshes.
Klaipėda and Šiauliai are charming cities with distinct
surroundings characterized by tiny, hidden lanes

Getting Around
The A1 motorway between Kaunas and Klaipėda is the fastest east–
west route across the region. Buses serve the region well, and good
bases from which to explore it are Palanga, Kaunas, Šiauliai and
Klaipėda. Trains offer a less flexible means of transport, and even the
Kaunas–Klaipėda line makes a detour via Šiauliai. The regional airport,
at Palanga, provides international connections, most notably with the
transit hubs of Copenhagen and Rīga.
