The Flavours of the Netherlands

The typical Dutch menu offers good, solid fare. Pork, hams
and all kinds of sausages are popular, while the North Sea
provides plenty of fresh fish, especially cod, herring and
mackerel, as well as its own variety of tiny brown shrimps.
Leafy green vegetables, such as cabbage, endive (chicory)
and curly kale make regular appearances, frequently mashed
with the ubiquitous potato. Sauerkraut arrived from Germany
long ago and is now considered a native dish. The world-

What to Buy in Holland

In the cities and tourist resorts, souvenir shops are not difficult to
find. But if you are looking for something out of the ordinary,
either for yourself or as a gift, you can often find something in
more specialized shops, or even in a supermarket. Flowers and
Delftware never fail to delight. For other things worth taking
home, for example, local delicacies such as Dutch cheese and
speculaas, or drinks such as jenever gin (see p420).

Amusement and Theme Parks

The Netherlands offers a great variety of amusement and
theme parks. Whether you want to see frolicking dolphins,
take a white-knuckle ride, go back to Roman times or spend
the day splashing in a swimming pool, there is something for
everyone. And because the Dutch weather doesn’t always
play along, most parks have attractions indoors. Listed below
is a sample of the parks to be found in the country.

Sports Holidays

With its abundance of water, the Netherlands lends itself to all
kinds of watersports such as boating, sailing and canoeing;
however, there are also plenty of opportunities for sporting
activities on dry land, whether you want to kick a ball about
or play golf or tennis, or even go riding. Most VVV-gidsen
(see p432) tell you where there are golf courses and tennis
courts in the locality, and they give the addresses of angling
clubs, stables, boatyards, sailing schools and so on.

Sailing courses suitable for all ages and experience levels are widely available along the Dutch

Banking and Local Currency

In the Netherlands, cash remains a popular means of
payment, but credit cards and debit cards are now the norm.
Almost all hotels, shops and restaurants accept major credit
cards in payment. Other means of payment are traveller’s
cheques (with identification), and, occasionally, US dollars
(particularly at antique and souvenir shops). In 2002, the
Netherlands began to use the euro. The best place to change
money is at a bank. You can take an unlimited amount of
currency into the Netherlands, and you can withdraw limited
amounts of cash at an ATM. ATMs can be found outside post offices,
banks and GWK offices

Public Transport

The Netherlands has a comprehensive and efficient
public transport system. Major cities can be easily
reached by train, while towns and villages are served
by local buses as well as a number of trains. The

The Canal Bus is an excellent way to get around Amsterdam’s waterways. They operate on
three circular routes: the green route, the red route and the blue route, which meet at various
points, including the jetty outside Centraal Station
and on the Singelgracht between the Rijksmuseum
and Leidseplein. There are 17 stops in all and
together they provide easy access to most major
sights. During high season, boats leave from
opposite Centraal Station every half an hour
between 9:30am and 6pm. A day ticket for all
three routes, which costs €19 per adult, and
€9.50 for children (aged 4–12 years), allows
you to hop on and off as many times as you
like. Another reasonable offer is the 24-hour
ticket, which costs just €2.50 more. The Canal Bus in Amsterdam

Cycling

The flat landscape of the Netherlands makes it a boon for
cyclists. At least 85 per cent of the population has a bicycle,
and there is no shortage of maps and guidebooks with
interesting cycling routes. You can use the LF-routes (see
p449) to plan your own daytrip or cycling holiday. Another
possibility is to take part in an organized cycle tour, where
you are awarded a souvenir medal at the end.
