PREFACE.
To Tnp ManyreNo Hrsronrcer, Socrptv:
Gentlenoen:-We have the honor to submit the Eighteenth
Volume of the Maryland Archives, containing the Records of Maryland
Troops in the Continental Service during the War of the American
Revolution, 17 7 5-t783.
This publication of the muster rolls and other records of service of
Maryland men in the war of the American Revolution was undertaken
in March, 1897. The bravery and excellentreputation of the troopsof
the Maryland Line were such that their names deserved to be rescued
from oblivion, while the services rendered by men of this State in the
Flying Camp, German Regiment and other commands were also note-
worthy.
A large number of Revolutionary papers were found in the posses-
sion of the Johns Hopkins University, to which institution they had
the late
been presented by Office. '.Cfhoel.cJu.stTohdoymoafsthSecsheaprfa,pfeorrsmweralsy Commis-
given the
sioner of the Land
Society with authorizatian to copy and print such of them as should
seem desirable. All lists in this work, without indication of source, are
to be understood as a part of this collection. In Decembdr, 1896, the
Society had purchased at auction in New York City a number of muster \
rolls, some of which had at one time been in Col. Scharfs possession.
These are indicated by the letter M. In the Land Office of the State
at Annapolis are a number of valuable Revolutionary papers. Some of
v these contained information duplicating that elsewhere obtained; but
one of them, a Record of the soldiers in the Maryland Line from 1776
to r 78o, is the most important single list in this work. It comprises
over 6poo names and is contained in three manuscript volumes. A
list of those who served in the two battalions of select militia cblled out
in r78r, was also obtained from the Land Office. We are indebted to
the courtesy of the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American
Revolution for permission to print the copy of the pay-roll of the
Maryland Line r78r-83, which they obtained from the Land Office.
There are two plans for the preparation of a work of this kind:
one, adopted by the State of Connecticut, to print the lists as found
and give a general index of names, the other, adopted by the State of
2 Preface.
Massachusetts, to put together all the information concerning each man
and arrange all names in alphabetical order. We have adopted the
former plan for several reasons ; first, because this is a volume of Mary-
land Archives and, as such, should contain the lists as they are found;
secondly, because we have no sufficient means at hand to enable us to
identify or differentiate the persons of the same name found in different
lists; and, thirdly, because for certain purposes it is interesting and
useful to know who were associated in any command.
Doubtless, it will be found that the records are not absolutely
complete. The wonder is rather that so many lists have been pre-
served through so many vicissitudes and opportunities of loss. We
have sufficient information from what has been preserved, to give us
the record of most of the Continental soldiers. Unfortunately, we
have not found the rolls of those two companies who marched from
Frederick County to the siege of Boston, but many of the records of the
Independent companies are in our possession. The muster rolls of the
Flying Camp are preserved, but no record of their service can be
found. The records of the Maryland Line are quite complete. A
chronological arrangement of the muster and pay-rolls has been adopted
as far as possible. The rolls of certain special commands, such as Lee's
and Pulaski's Legions, which it is difficult to fit into any chronological
arrangement, are placed at the end of the work. It should be noted
that the term ', deserter,'l when used without the addition ,,to the
enemy," merely signifies that the soldier was absent from his command
,- without leave. The discipline of the Revolutionary armies was not
strict, and many left the ranks, when they were needed at home, return-
ing to the service after a few months.
After most of the volume was in type, certain muster rolls were
secured too late to be inserted in their proper place in the volume.
f.hese are contained in an appendix.
The Committee deems it proper to record its indebtedness to Dr.
Steiner, the Junior member of the Committee, for the large amount of
time and labor bestowed byhim in the preparation of the present volume.
Acknowledgments are also due to Dr. F. E. Sparks, the Society's Archi-
vist, for careful work in superintending details of verification and
arrangement.
Respectfully,
Cravrox C. Herr,,
Hrrnv Srocxnnroce,

Lower District of Frederick County, to wit:-
I do hereby certify that I have at sundry times reviewed eighty-
seven of the men as above enrolled by Capt. Edward Burgess, for the
service of the Flying Camp; but that, two, to wit: Obed Wilson and
Henry Clarke, who are on the said List, are reported by Capt. Burgess
to be effective, able bodied men ; and in my opinion and judgment the
whole number so reviewed, is composed of effective men and fit for
military duty. Given under my hand this 7th Day of August, r 776.
