Enrolled Sixreen men, part of Capt.
George's Company, Three of which did not appear at the time the
others met to be mustered and passed. The other Thirteen are able
bodied effective men. The whole of Mr. Bird's men will in a day or
two be mustered and passed. As capt. George is anxious to go to
Annapolis to get Directions, it is thought not necessary to detain him
for the few remaining. In a few days a Roll of the whole will be trans-

" Resolved, That the 8 battalions required by congress to be raised
\- by this state, exceeds its just guota,
That this state, desirous

of exerting the most strenuous efforts to support the liberties and inde-

\ pendence of the United States, will therefore use its utmost endeavours
\ to raise the 8 battalions required, (including the troops already raised
and in the service of the United States), as soon as possible.
That four commissioners be appointed to repair to the camps in the
Jerseys and New York, and there obtain a list of such of the officers in
the regular troops and flying camp from this state, no.w in the service
of the United States, as are willing to engage in the service during the
war; and also to enlist or cause to be enlisted all or every of the said
regular troops or flying camp militia in the service of the United States
during the war, continuing the regular battalion and forming the inde-
pendent companies intc a battalion, and filling both up according to the
continental establishment; and the said commissioners, or any three of
them, may also fill up such of the blank commissions sent to this con-
vention by congress, as rnay be immediately necessary for the officering
of the said corps; but in filling up the said commissions they are re-
quired not to introduce into the cgrps of the now regulars, any officer
other than such as are of those regulars, nor into the corps which may
be formed of the flying camp militia, any officer not now an officer in
the said regulars or flying camp."

" Resolved, That this Convention adjourn And that the
said Council of Safety be and are fully empowered to take and pursue
all measures that they shall think necessary or proper for raising, com-

RESOLVES OF CONTINENTAL CONGRESS, z7 IUNE, 1776.
" Resolved, That six companies of riflemen, in addition to the three
companies now at New York, be raised, and the whole regimented;
and that a commission be granted to captain Stevenson, to be colonel
of the said regiment of riflemen, which is to be enlisted for three years,
unless sooner discharged by Congress; the men to be allowed a bounty
of ten dollars; and that Moses Rawlins be lieutenant-colonel, and Otho
Holland Williams, major of the said regiment: That four companies of
riflemen, for the said regiment, be raised in Virginia, and two in Mary-
land."
(Rawlings became colonel about r January, rZI7.)
RESOLVES OF CONTINENTAL CONGRESS' 9 OCTOBER, 1778.
" Resolved, That if any of the states in which col. Moses Rawlins
shall recruit for his regiment shall give to persons enlisting in the same,
for three years, or during the war, the bounty allowed by the state, in
addition to the continental bounty, the men so furnished, not being
inhabitants of any other of the United States, shall be credited to the
quota of the State in which they shall be enlisted."

as shall be appointed by the commander-in-chief, forthwith recruit three

Colonel Moses Rawlings' Rifle Regiment was originally raised in
Iaryland and Virginia as Stephenson's Maryland and Virginia Rifle
egiment, and reoiganized in t777 as one of the r6 additional ltegi-
