ATHACHAMAYAM

Athachamayam marks the
beginning of the ten-day
Onam festival in Kerala. It
is an occasion to witness
almost all the folk art forms of Kerala.

Conducted every year on the Atham asterism of
the Malayalam month Chingam (Leo), the event
held at the historical town of Tripunithura is a
celebration of a legendary victory of the Raja
(King) of Kochi. In olden days it was customary
for the king to travel with his entire entourage to
the Tripunithura fort. This was also the occasion
for his subjects to greet the king and see him at
close quarters. The procession, now without the
king, still retains its majestic charm, and is
conducted in a spectacular manner.
Caparisoned elephants, varieties of folk art
forms, floats, musical ensembles etc form part

of the procession.

The second largest Ayurveda

produced a number of medical personnel of high caliber
in different fields like research, education and clinical

VANCHIYOOR

Vanchiyoor is a locality in downtown
Thiruvananthapuram city, the capital of the India state of
Kerala. Vanchiyoor occupies an important place in the history
of Travancore. It was the district headquarters and most
important offices were situated here. There are a lot of heritage
monuments in the area. Major administrative, commercial,
government and judicial establishments are still located in
Vanchiyoor. It is part of Vanchiyoor Village, which holds the
prominent administrative headquarters and landmarks of
Kerala. Proximity with major educational institutions, offices
and shopping centres coupled with easy road connectivity with
all parts of the city make it a favoured residential locale in
Thiruvananthapuram . Vanchiyoor is 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from
Statue Junction, about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Palayam and 2
kilometres (1.2 mi) from the central railway and bus stations.
Trivandrum International Airport lies 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) to
the southwest of Vanchiyoor.

Kerala Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran (b.1845-d.1914),
renowned scholar and poet, recalls in ‘ Entae
Mrigayasmaranakal’ (Memories of Hunting) that it was

Kunjan, a blacksmith from Vanchiyoor, who made a
magnificent gun for his use, following the order of Ayilyam
Tirunal Rama Varma, the then Maharaja of Travancore. Kerala
Varma recorded that the blacksmith, Kunjan, was the
descendant of the Vanchiyoor Kollan, who crafted the clock
installed in the Mani Meda.

VAZHUTHACAUD

The history of Thiruvananthapuram is stagnant in many
different places. Every place has its own history.
Vazhuthacaud is situated only 3km from Trivandrum
Railway Station. As the name suggests, it must have been a
forest of sloppiness. The old people says that in the past, the
area from Vazhuthacaud to Jagathy was forest. How many
buildings are there with the remains of history? Police Head
Quarters, Trivandrum Development Authority Building,
Women's College, St. Joseph's Church, Aakashawani (now
situated in Bakthyvilasam Bungalow), DPI Office building,
Kalpana Bungalow (the bungalow where the Encyclopedia
office is located), and the residential bungalow and office in
Thycaud are all in harmony with individuals and people in
history. The Freemasons Club, The Trivandrum Club, and
The Sree Moolum Club are all relics of colonial culture.

Government Woman's College, Vazhuthacaud, has a legacy of
more than 100 years. It is the sixth oldest college in Kerala.
Women's College started as girls’ school in 1864. Later in 1897,
it was awarded Second Grade College and in 1920, First Grade
College. Since then, the College was known as H.H. The
Maharajas College for Women. On the way to the left, we can
see the only monument of CV Raman Pillai, the lord of
Travancore in Thiruvananthapuram. Adjacent to it is the first
Government English public school in Kerala. Near to it, Singer
and composer M.G. Radhakrishnan's anscestoral House is
situated. It was from this house that the famous musicians Smt.
Omanakutti and Shri M.G. Sreekumar became parts of
Malayalam film songs. Sreekumar was also part of the
Malayalam music industry. The house of famous poet
Vishnunarayanan Namboodiri is situated nearly. From there we
can see the residency bungalow. It was the official residence of
the Travancore Resident.

The road from DPI facing Women’s College is called
Minchin Road. On that road, CPI (M) leader and legislator K.
Anirudhan's house. Minchin Road ends in front of the DPI

office. The building, formerly known as the Freemasons Club,
was later became the DPI office. The Freemasons Club was
designed by Minchin, a European engineer who came to
Travancore during the time of Sree Moolam Thirunal. The
locals called him Mookkunturai.

Vazhuthacaud is the land of poets. On the opposite side
of the Cottonhill Government Girls' Higher Secondary School,
which is the number one girls’ school in Asia, there were three
poets - the poets who carried out three different schemes. One
is Ayyappa Panicker, the red star of modernity, and the other is
ONV Kurup, who thrilled Kairali with beautiful romantic songs.
The other one is Chemmanam Chacko the humorist for another
comedy.

There is a restaurant called Vazhuthacaud Nikunjam. It was
there that the great talents, including Aravindan, came together
to discuss film. Opposite to that it is the Tagore Theatre, the
golden throne in art history.

The Tagore Theatre, built in 1965, plays a major role in making
Thiruvananthapuram an artful city.Thiruvananthapuram City
Commissioner's Office and Thiruvananthapuram Urban
Development Authority Office are located close to the Tagore
Theatre. The history of both buildings is remarkable. Trida's
office was built by father of Lalitha-Padmini-Ragini, known as
the Travancore Sisters. Opposite to it is the Roscoat House built
by CV Raman Pillai. Vayalar / Devarajan / P.Bhaskaran, who
enriched our song and poetic heritage. Their statues are situated
there.

How many stories this city has to tell. You just need to
listen. They keep telling great life stories. We should know the
history and follow the history. When we learn that Akashavani
building was the official residence of Sir CP Ramaswamy Iyer,

Diwan of Travancore we are amazed at how much history this
region has to offer.

POOJAPPURA

Poojappura known as the “Heart city of

Trivandrum, Kerala. It is located in the
southwest part of the city surrounded with
many other places namely Jagathy,
Karamana, Mudavanmugal and Thirumala. Keerthana D. S

Behind the name

The name Poojappura comes from the fact that it
was here that the king of Travanvcore used to arrive
during Mahanavami celebrations for the pooja
(worship). There is the biggest Kavadi Procession on
Vijayadeshami day with over 700 Kavadis,
Paravakavadi, Suryakavadi, Mayilkavadi, Agnikavadi
etc.

Poojappura is known for housing the Central Prison
(Central Jail) of Kerala. The central jail is one of the
oldest in the state and was built by British Engineers
during Travancore Reign. It was established in
Kerala in the year of 1886 as a part of Travancore

The Kunnu Bunglow atop the beautiful hill in
Mudavanmugal, Poojappura is famed as the
favourite spot of composer King Swati Tirunal. The
king used to visit the bunglow frequently and used to
compose songs during his visit. He enjoys the
scenery there and used to bath at the lake in
mudavanmugal. There was a huge step that led to
the lake from the bungalow made of stones and it is
still present there. But the bungalow does not exists
here. And a concrete water tank stands still in its
place.

Many film stars including Mohanlal, Poojappura Ravi
was born and brought up at Poojappura and
mudavanmugal. They still visit their house frequently
and stay many days for as to bring back their old
memories.

AN INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVE IN VALUE EDUCATION

SSRVM is an initiative by Art of Living Organization.
In today’s modern world, education is being taken as a system to make our children
professionally
competent but somehow in the preparation for this rat race we are losing focus on
building
characters and individuals.

The founder our Pujya Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar ji sensed this and thus SSRVM was
established
to bridge the gap between modern education and old values. He says “Broaden the
vision…
Deepen the roots”. Each day our school begins with this motto where we provide a
conducive,
warm, experiential environment to our students to learn the best of academics and
imbibe the
best of character building. We take care that our students learn the latest aspects of
modern
education and also inculcate the strength of our culture and values.

historical spot…

The Killi, a tributary of the Karamana river, nurtured
centres of learning and temples on its banks

„Killiar‟, a tributary of the Karamana river, is a major presence in the
city. It is much shorter than the Karamana river, with a length of about
24 km. The name Killi is reminiscent of the name of the ancient
Dravidian Goddess and is also the family name of some Chola dynasties
(Nedumudi Killi was a king who lived during
the Silappadhikaram period). There are names of places etymologically
related to Killi in both Kerala and Tamil Nadu, such as
Killikurussimangalam. A megalithic urn burial site has been identified at
Sasthamangalam, on the banks of the Killi river, by B.S. Harisankar, a
Pune-based pre-historic researcher.

Ward & Conner writes about the Killi river thus: Between Kuramunnay
and the commencement of the town, there is an open street of paddy
fields through which flows the Killyaur, over it is a wooden bridge, this
stream meanders to the East of the suburbs in which are few rocky
heights of inconsiderable size. The town commences a short distance
West of the above river... Its source is in the Nedduvencaud district –
enters this 5 miles North of the Capital, meanders in a Southerly course
three miles and is turned by the rivulet from Wutteeoorkauo S. S. W. 3
1/4 ¼ miles to the high road which crosses it then through: a wide stripe
of cultivation nearly S. 1 3/4 ¾ miles forms a junction with the

Kurramunnayaur. There are two dams thrown across it on the West of
Wutteoorkauo, the Northernmost is dilapidated and the other called
Murthengoe Ana, a canal branches off it, and is conveyed into the fort of
Trivandrum. A mile South of the above dam is one in ruins across the
original track of this river. The nullahs that rise in the Northern ridges
of hills fertilizing the paddy glens, verge towards one point and discharge
themselves into a backwater which communicates with the sea at the
Vailey bar; the principal branches pass by Palliapooram, Cullicoottum &
c. and is termed the Chittar.”

At Maruthankuzhy is one of the oldest „anaikettu‟ (anaicut) in
Thiruvananthapuram. Maruthankuzhy forms a part of the five „madais‟
harvesting water for enriching the Killiar (the fifth one is called
„anachaam mada‟). The anaicut has three gates with stone pillars that
are grooved to enable placing of shutters in them. The granite floor slabs
are held together with metal clips. When the shutters are closed, water
rises and flows into the canal under the road and turns right to proceed
through a channel known as Kochar, on the right side of the road by the
same name, from the Anaikettu spot to Edapazanji. It proceeds via
Jagathy, Valiyasala, Powerhouse road, Thakarapparambu and Padma
Nagar to supply water to the Padmatheertham pond inside the Fort. The
scheme seems to have been in existence at least 200 years ago.
Maruthankuzhy Ana also houses a river-gauge that is used to measure
the river discharge. Killi river has, in addition to the Maruthankuzhy
bridge (a new one is also getting ready), has bridges across it at Jagathy,
Pangode and Killippalam.

Udiyannoor Devi temple at Maruthankuzhy is beside the Killi river.
The Thottam Paattu in Maruthankuzhy Bhadrakaali temple has words of
praise for the Killi river. The Mahadeva Temple at Sasthamangalam is
yet another temple on the banks of Killi river, upstream of the Ana at
Maruthankuzhy. The famous Attukal temple is also on the bank of the
„river foot‟, and hence the name „Attukal‟ (its literal meaning is the foot
of the river).

On the banks of the Killi, at the spot today known as Valiyasala (near
Killippalam on the National Highway), is the famous Valiyasala temple,
associated by many with the Kanthaloor Shaala, the historic university
that received students from various parts of India. A war was fought by
Chola king Raja Raja I over this “Nalanda of the south”. The deity in
the temple is still called Kanthalloor Shaala Mahadevar. Puthankotta,
the palace of Umayamma Rani, was also on the banks of this river.

The Killi‟s vicinity to Chalai, the historic trading centre of the city made
it one of the routes for moving trade goods. Boats could take goods
through the Killi river, enter the Karamana river (at Kalladimugham at
Konchiraravila) and reach Poonthura, which at one time served as a
port. Reminding us of this old status of the river, we can still spot timber
depots in Killippalam-Attakulangara bypass. There are two schools by
the riverside, the Chalai Boys‟ and Girls‟ schools. Floods of the Killi
river used to disrupt functioning of the schools for days.

More than a 100 years ago, Dewan Nanu Pillai wrote to the Chief
Engineer thus: At a short distance from the Killiyar bridge on the main
line. There existed a breach or rather a gap in the embankment. The
whole Shala and the parts of the roads in the front of the fort by the
eastern fort gate were inundated. The walls of houses have mostly
tumbled down. His Highness could not drive by the road. In fact
communication was stopped. I wish you will conceive some project for
water communication near the Anjengo bar in times of floods. If this is
not done, there is scope for danger land accidents. The embankment of
the Killiayur on the southern side of the main bridge has to be
strengthened and the breach should be repaired.”
Another famous spot:- maruthankuzhy bridge

maruthankuzhy is also famous for it’s bridge, which is a one way from
sasathamangalm to the maruthankuzhi junction…it was inaugurated
on march 2013…the bridge contains solar system & killi river flows
under the bridge…

Balaramapuram
Balaramapuram is one of the panchayat
that forms the city of Trivandrum, the
capital Of Kerala, India. It is the most
urbanized panchayat in Trivandrum
district. Balaramapuram is famous as
the centre for the production
of traditional varieties of handloom
textile meant for the contemporary
cloth wearing style of Kerala. Its unique
crafting makes it an ideal family
heirloom.

AREA DETAILS
Total Land Area:10.53 square
kilometres.
Population(2011):- 36,134.
Body:- Grama Panchayat.
LOCAL HISTORY

During the reign of Maharaja
Balaramavarma, from 1799 to

1810,handloom weaving was first
introduced at Balaramapuram. The
Maharaja and his Delava , Ummini
Thampi jointly decided to convert
Balaramapuram and its surrounding
places into an agro-based industrial belt
with various traditional industries by
the development of paddy and coconut
cultivation, fishing, weaving, and oil
extraction.

How Weaving started here
The Delava of Maharaja brought seven
weaver families (Shaliars) from Tamil
Nadu to produce fabrics for the
members of the royal family and made
them settle at Balaramapuram in a
separate location now called "Shaliar
Street".The present residents of the
street are the descendants of these
seven families. Among the prominent
weaving masters, Mr. Ponnan alias
Appu panicker from Thannivila is an
acclaimed weaver who taught the
business to others of this region.
The place Balaramapuram itself was
named after the King who started
industries in this region.

PICTURES OF BALARAMAPURAM
Today the handloom industries of
balaramapuram are fading. Handmade

textiles now are mostly machine made.
The effect of the industrialization is
now making this rich culture of kerala
fade.Lets hope that no more of our
signature culture and behavior gets
destroyed by the modern era.

My Birthplace: Aruvipuram

ABOUT THE PLACE:

Aruvipuram is a village in the southern district of Thiruvananthapuram in
Kerala, India. It is famous for the Siva temple established by Sri Narayana Guru.
The Guru consecrated the Siva idol, the first non Brahmin to do so in Kerala
society, in the year 1888. It is an important pilgrimage centre. The place has a
beautiful waterfall. The temple of Lord Shiva is the main attraction. This temple
has great historical and social significance. At a time when tradition strictly
allowed only Brahamins to install deities, a non- Brahmin, the great social
reformer Sree Narayana Guru ventured to do it breaking the centuries old
Brahmin monopoly.

ARUVIPPURAM SHIVA TEMPLE:
Aruvipuram Shiva Temple is located at Aruvipuram in

Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Aruvipuram Siva Temple is therefore loaded with a great significance which most
of us fail to see or admit. This seed in time grew into a huge banyan tree of
liberating ideas and activities, and it is still expanding to newer space. This
movement joining hands with similar movements all over the world, hopefully,
shall succeed some day in the course of our foreseeable history to bring about the
ideal of Satya Yuga or millennium once again, or for the first time. The temple is
of great historical and social importance as the shivling was installed by the great
social reformer Shri Narayana Guru in AD 1888, on the Shivratri day. This was
done against the rule when tradition strictly allowed only Brahmins to install
deities. Legend has it that Shri Narayana Guru got the idol from a nearby
waterfall. The main festival of the temple is Shivratri.

Various cultural programs are conducted during this time. A caparisoned
elephant carries the image of the deity in a grand procession in the evening and

the festival concludes with the Aarattu. Shri Narayana Guru Jayanthi is also
celebrated in a grand manner. There is a cave on top of a nearby hill and it is
believed that Guru meditated here.

Ten days before the Sivaratri the flag of festival will be hoisted. The
celebrations of the first nine days are looked after by nine families around there
as per the standing instructions of the Guru. The last day in this succession,
Sivaratri itself is directly conducted and supervised by the Aruvippuram Math.
Without prejudice to the codes and conventions befitting to any Siva Temple, just
the same giving due importance to the simple, sincere and educative forms of
worship, Sivaratri here draws more and more devoted souls to it. With a view to
raise the collective consciousness, various meetings are organized along with the
festivals which enlighten the people on multifarious subjects. This may be
featured as the uniqueness of this ideal place.

GURU MANDAPAM
The Guru Mandapam is the main building situated to the left of the temple.

Gurudev used to rest here and meet the devotees, social workers and other
visitors. After his period this sanctified room was converted to Guru Mandiram
where Sree Guru is paid homage by means of some ritualistic worship. To the
suffering and refugeless public this Mandiram filled with the divine vibrations of
this holy personage shall ever remain a great solace. Special poojas are arranged
on the Chatayam Thirunal of every month in addition to the daily programmes of
prayer, meditation, pooja, homa and the like.

ABOUT RIVERS IN ARUVIPURAM
Aruvipuram is having a beautiful river also. This small river is having its humble
origin somewhere on the mount Agastyarkoodam. The River hold a large quantity
of water. The rivers flows through the rock slopes. This river is a part of Neyyar
river. Water purity is also maintained. The river is used for religious purpose also.
It’s an eco-friendly river which was maintaining the beauty of nature present day
also.

TOURIST PLACES IN ARUVIPURAM:
Kodithooki Mala is a rocky hill nearby the Aruvipuram Siva Temple. There

is a cave on top of the hill, where Guru used to visit for rest, solitariness and tapas.
In adition to the natural beauty the mala, the cave under it and Neyyar river add
a thrilling experience to the pilgrims and visitors. Foothills of Koduthukki mala
is now maintained as a temple. It was the historical significance. The cave Sree
Narayana Guru used to rest and pray in the top of a hill. One can reach the top by
climbing the steps leading from temple.

The view from above is mesmerising as one can see the Neyyar river
flowing admist thick green cover. The stone is a symbol which he procured from
the Sankarankuzhi, a deep chasm in the Neyyar. It was exactly on Sivaratri, the
holy night of Siva, in 1888. The Sivalingam simultaneously stands as a symbol
of both the God with form and the formless Infinity.

The viewpoint is ideal to catch a panoramic sight of Neyyar. Steps from near the
temple lead one to the banks of the river. The path of the trek is populated with
huge boulders which double up as spots of repose for tourists as large trees along
the banks cast a soothing shade on them. Locals can be seen relaxing here in the
noon hours.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

A school functions inside the temple premises. “Sivagiri Sree Narayana
Central School”. It was a religious school which was following CBSE syllabus.
The school started functioning since 15 years with only few students. It will not
be out of place to mention in this context that Sree Guru started a Sanskrit school
on the same premises of the temple and later on, in Sivagiri Guru wanted to found
a Brahma Vidyalaya to learn, experience and spread the universal religion of
Brahma Vidya which is not at all opposed to any other religion on essential points.
This Madom has also runs a CBSE School nearby and have a largest area of
cultivated land. Brahmasree Sandranatha Swamikal leads the activities now.

PALAYAM, TRIVANDRUM

It gets its name from the fact that it used to be camp of the Jinan Joy
royal army and cavalry of the erstwhile kings of Travancore. It XA
extended from the Cantonment House in the North up to A.K.G.
Centre in the south, including areas now occupied by the
University Stadium and Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium. The
Army subsequently moved to Pangode. The cavalry, however,
remained at Palayam.

The name "Cantonment" is not much in use for the area, through that
name is still associated with the police station near the Secretariat,
"Cantonment Police Station". At present, "Cantonment House" serves as the
official residence of the Leader of the Opposition.

The history of the Palayam Mosque at Trivandrum dates back to 1813
AD, when the British Indian Second Regiment was stationed here.It was then
