Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

The Monster Within

The question was: did my creation possess the soul of a monster or of a human?
“I had admired the perfect forms of my cottagers,” he whispered, with a voice seeming
to grate against metal.
“Their grace, beauty, and delicate complexions; but how I was terrified when I viewed
myself in a transparent
pool!” He raised his yellow arms, bulging with arteries, glowing in the sunlight that
trickled through the window.
With a jolt, I stepped back, aware of how this monster could claw me into shreds.
“Don’t you see it fair that I, too, have a place in human society?” he said. “Then I
would be a harm to nobody.”
Since deserting my creation, memories of the beast had writhed in my mind, one part
of me pleading to help him, the other demanding his death. He couldn’t be a human,
could he? Not with his broken face and boulder hands.
“But you are not a human,” I said. My nails dug into my palms; the stinging pain
reminded me of what this
monster could do with his hands.
He pointed at me, eyes slitting. “You created me! I did not choose to be a monster.”
I rummaged for an argument, a comeback, even a cutting reply, but weren’t his words
true? I nodded slowly,
as if drunk. “You’re right . . . but even if I accept that you belong with humans, others
won’t. Your good
cottagers didn’t; they scarred you. You say all you want is a fair life . . . but with that
face—” My eyes flitted
over my creation’s features: the cheekbones carved like a hollow soul, the forehead
jutting like a used dagger,
the yellow of bloodlessness. “Nobody will accept you. You are feared, hated; on the
surface, you are a monster.”
“Then make me a human . . . on the surface. You are a creator who imitated God. You
couldn’t create a perfect human, but this is your chance to correct it. Recreate my
body, turn me into a human.”

CONTD….

I sat at my wooden desk and sighed. The monster wouldn’t have existed if not for my
plan; and isn’t this what I desired? To create a being the way God would?
“I shall try. I can’t promise it will succeed, however.”
He dove forward and clasped my hand, eyes shining. “You will try?” As the drumming

of my heart slowed, I nodded.

The monster twisted away to the window; his steps feverish with an excitement that

was almost electric. My stomach clenched like a fist tightening around a throat. Was I

giving a human face to a monster, forming the tool of destruction? This monster was

unpredictable, volatile, perhaps starving for revenge against those who

struck him out of disgust and terror.

Or was I wavering through this question wrongly? At the core, was there any

difference between monsters and humans?

2001: A Space Odyssey
Arthur C. Clarke

Bowman fell with a thud on the ground. Dizzy with blurry vision, he woke up and
looked around him. He had been transported to a mysterious place. Unknown of his
surroundings, he strolled around the peculiar place and asked a nearby person "What is
this place?”. Though he did not even look like a person at all! But he was not a lot like
a human! He looked more like a Cyborg.
“Excuse me, Mr...” said Bowman.
“Louis Carrol,” said the Cyborg. “What are you doing on the Titan moon?
“The Titan! This planet is Earth, right?” said Bowman confused.
“This place is a moon not a planet! The Titan Moon looks a lot like the planet Earth.
Don’t let your eyes fool you.” said Louis.
“I know that. I am from the space field. “He confessed. “So, I am aware that Titan
looks like Earth.
“Oh, well it is getting late. Would you like to come at my place and have dinner with
my family? “, said Louis.
“Sure, why not?” said Bowman.
As Bowman walked, he saw many more cyborgs. At to his surprise, he saw a flying
train in the sky! He walked awes trucked with Mr. Carrol at his side. A while later they
finally reached Carrol’s house. The house was inside a crystal white dome. The dome
was surrounded with shallow water on all sides. There was a voice-controlled draw
bridge also.
“Let me in HoloLens,” said Carrol.
“Voice recognized,” said HoloLens. “We need to take a face scan before allowing you
in. Thus, you are requested to show us your face”.
Carrol put his face in front of a camera scanner and HoloLens did a quick scan.
“Face recognized you may enter the house,” said HoloLens. The draw bridge unfolded
itself and allowed Carrol and Bowman to cross the water. The door automatically
opened and a voice called “welcome home” chorused for a few minutes until the sound
died out.
“Welcome home Louis,” said Mrs. Carrol. "I see you have bought a guest.”

CONTD….

“Yes Catherine, I have invited Mr. Bowman here to have dinner with us,” said Mr.

Carrol.
“Hope you do not mind.”
“No worry we have plenty of food.” said Mrs. Carrol. “Let me call the children down
stairs”

Mrs. Carrol called the children down stairs. They too were cyborgs.
“Daddy, did you know astronomers have discovered new planets like Lollipipigust,
and Glotopia in the andromeda galaxy.” said Carrol’s son. They had a lovely meal.

Until Bowman checked the time and saw that he had been transported to the future!

(2121) He wanted to go back to 2021 so asked Carrol: Are there any time machines?
“Yes of course, I have one at my home in the attic.” said Carrol. “Follow me.” They

went to the attic and then Carrol asked: Do you want to travel to the future or the past?
“I would like to go back to 2021,” said Bowman.
“Ok, I have made the settings,” said Carrol. You will vanish in 5, 4, 3, 2,1!

Bowman found himself on Earth. He got up and thought to himself he had had an

adventure of a lifetime.
