INDIAN ARMED FORCES: THE PRIDE OF OUR NATION
India has a rich past of military histories. The first references about armies comes from the
Vedas as well as our very own great epics namely, The Mahabharata and The Ramayana.
The first evidence of our maritime history is a tidal dock built in Lothal in Gujarat around
2300 BC during the Indus Valley Civilisation. The Rig Veda, which was written at about
1500 BC quotes Varuna, the god of water who has knowledge of all sea routes and it
chronicles naval expeditions. The emperor Chandragupta Maurya’s right hand man and
closest confidante Chanakya’s famed book Arthashastra chronicles a whole chapter
dedicated to the state department of waterways (Sanskrit: navadhyaksha or Superintendent
of Ships) and exploration of new lands by ships (Sanskrit: dvipantaragamanam). Sea lanes
were widely responsible for the widespread sway of Indian culture to other countries. The
Marathas and Travancore reigned supreme in the Indian subcontinent during the 17th and
18th century defeating European powers several times (Travancore defeated Dutch East
India Company in The Battle of Colachel).
However, despite all this, a new enemy had taken over the subcontinent: The British East
India Company. Its tentacles were reaching everywhere and had taken advantage of the
disunity between the Indian rulers. It had first taken control over Bengal and soon took
over the entire subcontinent. Our riches were plundered and looted and our handloom
industry severely damaged. Worse of all, there was the deplorable and vile act of divide
and rule which further disunited us. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Among the many misdeeds of
the British rule in India, history will look upon the act depriving a whole nation of arms as
the blackest.” Of course, during the colonisation of India, 1.3 million Indian soldiers
served in World War I and over 74000 lost their lives. They fought in the trenches, in the
grimmest of conditions, The British raised a lot of men as well as money, horses,
ammunition from the rigorous taxation of Indians as well as the independent princely
states. In WWII, the Indian forces fought for the British Empire on various fronts, in the
European theatre against Germany and Italy, in North Africa, and in defending British Raj
against Japan and in Burma. When it began India’s forces were just 200,000 in 1939. It
rose to over 2.5 million soldiers near the end of the war. Field Marshal Sir Claude
Auchinleck, Commander-in-Chief of the British Indian Army stressed on the fact that the
British "couldn't have come through both wars [World War I & II] if they hadn't had
the Indian Army.

On 15th of August 1947 India finally became independent. A new era had begun.
However, it faced new challenges. The Partition based on religious lines had broken a
country into two parts based on religion. Pakistan and India. The Kashmir conflict after
the Partition also caused four battles with Pakistan (1947-48 Indo-Pakistani War, 1965
2nd Indo-Pakistani war, 1971 3rd Indo-Pakistani War and 1999 Kargil Conflict) and two
conflicts with China (1962 Sino-Indian War, 1967 Nathu La and Cho La skirmishes).
India’s armed forces displayed great resilience and courage in the face of the enemy.
Now, India has over 1.4 million active personnel and is the world’s second largest
military force and the world’s largest volunteer army. It has the world’s third largest
military budget and is the world’s fourth most powerful military. India is armed with
the nuclear triad and the armed forces are undergoing stable modernisation and
investing in futuristic soldier systems and missile defence system.
As rightly put by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, “We should have but one desire today.
The desire to die so that India may live.”

All I can hear is a serene sound It’s a dark and silent night, with no one
Smiling away, at heaven’s door around or in sight
Thanking God…for all and more Sometimes I am scared as hell, almost as if I
It was time for me to take a look back
On how I celebrated life without a crack!
Standing tall as a Banyan tree were in a shell
I celebrated life totally free Full of all bad things aglore, inhumanity,
With a sense of pride and a full ride obsessiveness and more
Friends & Family helped me sail through the People everywhere are terrifying and
tide annoying
Children screaming all around and crying
There were bumps and I had many a fall
My head is in a spin, my mind is almost
And Believe you me…
numb
Countless people drew me up the wall
But in the end, we all stood together, small, I am unable to speak, and I feel so glum
or tall I don’t know what’s wrong, why my world
And then there was a time, has come to a halt
When the bird in me soared high Is it just in my mind, or is it my fault?
With my wings wide open These are some of the struggles I face
I flew carefree in the sky It is when I move into an empty space
Youth was at its peak, and I dared to seek Help me Lord, help me God, cause I need to
And there was no time to feel weak get well soon
Cause’ I was busy celebrating life With the help of my friends, family, and a

NO FASHION ON A DEAD PLANET
‘Fashion’ may very well be the most commonly known word amongst humans. It
has been quite relevant since the 19th century, when terms like ‘fashion designing’
and ‘fashion houses’ sprang to life. Fashion has long been regarded by society as a
status symbol. People love the glitz and glamour of the runways, clothes with
elaborate designs, as well as accessories and footwear. In today’s day and age, the
need for trendy, and cheap clothing has created a demand for fast fashion.
‘Fast Fashion’ is a term used to describe quick production speeds and lower costs to
provide customers with cheap and trendy clothing which is often inspired by today’s
celebrities or fashion influencers. The fast fashion industry is particularly
problematic due to the frenzied rate at which it changes. Every season consumers
are persuaded to buy an increasing number of garments in order to keep the same
pace as today’s trends in fashion.
Early in the month of October this year, a climate activist, holding up a white
banner with the words “Overconsumption = Extinction” in bold block lettering,
joined the models on the runway for the Louis Vuitton show at the Louvre Museum,
which was the final event of Paris Fashion Week.
It is the same concept as the one stamped on that banner that explains why fashion
is so detrimental to our planet. Companies keep manufacturing: creating carbon
emissions, polluting water, and devouring tons of energy in the process, and we, the
customers, continue buying it.
The fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of the world’s carbon emissions, uses
more energy than aviation and shipping combined, and contributes almost 20% of
wastewater. It consumes one tenth of all of the water used industrially to run
factories and clean products. Processes like dyeing of textiles often require the
involvement of toxic chemicals, which eventually end up in our oceans, polluting
the waters and fatally harming sea life. The wastewater is, on most occasions, toxic
and cannot be treated to rid it of its impurities.
Synthetic polymer polyester is the most common fabric used in clothing. Globally,
65% of the clothing that we wear is polymer-based. No wonder it is, because
polyester is easy to clean and durable. It is also lightweight and inexpensive.
NAVELI SHARMA
IX- NILGIRIS
Contd..
Around 70 million barrels of oil a year are used to make polyester fibers in our
clothes, and a shirt made from polyester produces the equivalent of 5.5 kg of carbon
dioxide compared to 2.1 kg from a cotton shirt.
The rise of online shopping has also contributed to a fast fashion culture where
consumers buy more than they need, have it delivered to their door and then return a
large proportion of their purchases after trying them on. Returning items can double
the emissions from transporting your goods.
It is also more convenient for internet retailers to discard or incinerate returned
goods, rather than attempting to find another home for them. The US Environmental
Protection Agency estimates that in 2017 10.2m tonnes of textiles ended up in
landfills while another 2.9m tonnes were incinerated.
According to the World Bank, 40% of clothing purchased in some countries is never
used. The number of times you wear an item of clothing can make a big difference
in its overall carbon footprint. Scientists at the Chalmers Institute of Technology in
Sweden estimated, however, that the average t-shirt in Sweden is worn around 22
times in a year, while the average dress is worn just 10 times. this is a result of fast
fashion.
It is evident that investing in higher-quality clothing, wearing them more often and
holding onto them for longer, is the easily-wielded weapon for combatting the
carbon footprint from your garments. Mainstream consumers can quench their thirst
for new clothes by buying from vintage and secondhand clothing shops.
How you dispose of the clothes at the end of their useful life is also important.
Throwing them away so they end up in landfill or get incinerated simply leads to
more emissions. The best approach is probably to donate them to charity shops if
they're still in good condition or to recycle them.
Many of the changes needed to make fashion more sustainable have to be
implemented by the manufacturers and big companies that control the fashion
industry. But as consumers the changes we all make in our behavior can influence
positive impact too. We can all make a difference by being more thoughtful as
consumers.

THE MAJOR HAZARD OF ALL TIME- GLOBAL WARMING
“There’s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any
other, and that is the urgent and growing threat of a changing climate.” stated Barack
Obama. Global warming is a major hazard to the earth today. most of us know that global
warming is the long-term heating of Earth's climate system observed since the pre-
industrial period (between 1850 and 1900) which is mainly caused by greenhouse gases
like methane and carbon dioxide, India is the third-largest emitter of CO2 in the world
India emits about 3 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases each year, which is about 7% of
global emissions, if we don't do something soon India's CO2 footprint is bound to rise in
the future. The Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal surround India
therefore if the sea level rises then places near sea shores will be submerged in water
which would diminish the land to live which further could cause overcrowding and many
islands will also disappear gradually. Currently all land areas are seeing hotter days and
heat waves, 2020 was one of the hottest years on record. Higher temperature increases
heat-related illnesses and can make it more difficult to work and move around. Wildfires
start more easily and spread more rapidly when conditions are hotter .Such conditions
could be avoided by using less energy at home, limiting our air travel, Walking or cycling
instead of driving and using less fossil fuels. This is hard but not impossible. Let us all
take a step forward to save the earth from global warming.

lot out of it, as now they relate sports as a part of life. The credit goes to the hardwork

We wanted to take a moment to thank you both for the extra time you both invested with
Meher in extra classes. It truly helped her in not only improving her writing but also in
igniting her interest in it, reading and recognition also. Nowadays, we find her writing
on any piece of paper, or even highlighting sight words in her story books which is her
favourite thing to do these days. A lot of credit goes to you both. Thanks again for being
the guiding light for her. Also, thanks for noting the observations for her first term. Its
well received by us.

The sports day was a wonderful and well-coordinated event. As parents, since this was
one of the 1st events we attended, hence initially we were apprehensive on, how a
sports day would be made viable online, but kudos to the planning, training efforts
invested by teachers, in the little ones, it was truly a delight watching Anaia participate
with full confidence and enthusiasm.

Thank You Once Again!!
Dear Principal ma'am,
We really hope you are doing well and thank you for everything.
We know it is a difficult period for everyone in the world. Covid 19 has taken a toll on our lives
and disrupted it in many ways. But we would again like to stand up and applaud and thank
LVIS, teachers, administration and especially “Khushboo Ma'am” for making things easier for
us as parents and students via undue hard work and efforts.
We are parents of Anya - Class Grade I Magpies and we are so thankful to you and all other
teachers for taking classes and making children understand everything in the best possible way.
Anya is missing her regular school a lot, missing seeing her friends, teachers. But undoubtedly
we are happy that we are not missing on her studies as these are her foundation years and a
happy big milestone for her life...we don't know how long the lockdown would be but we think
this experience has made us see life from a different perspective and filled us with gratitude.

Kudos - Prep Primroses teachers
Dear Ma'am,
I am a happy parent who wanted to compliment the teachers and the thoughts
that go into the whole preparation process.
I was putting the leaves needed for an activity today in my daughter's room when
I overheard the conversation between Shilpa ma'am and a child. I was highly
impressed with ma'am's response when the child commented about Goddess Sita
knowing taekwando. She is so brilliant and spontaneous with kids. Also wanted
to compliment upon the values and beliefs being inculcated, whether it's making
torans or knowing the how-why behind different names of the gods. That's where
we as busy parents fail and the school and teachers are pitching in.
I agree that online mode is little difficult but I do believe that the teachers are
doing their best and I wish them the very best.
Thank you ma'am and wish you a very happy festive season.
Regards,
Neha
Good Morning Ma'am,
Hope this email finds you in good health.
Ma'am,
With immense happiness, I would like to Congratulate You, Our Vice Principal Ma'am and
all the Teachers for such a stupendous result of both Grade-10 and 12 learners.
Our teachers have worked so hard with the learners in these unusual circumstances and didn't
let the Pandemic be a deterrent to the studies.
Ma'am, I'm so happy for Miheeka's Result. She has scored 100 in 3 Subjects and overall
96%.
I can't thank our teachers enough for their continuous support and guidance for Miheeka. Not
just academics, but in so many extracurricular activities, she has kept herself busy
throughout the year.
Thanks to Lotus Valley School for giving such opportunities to my child which is helping her
in her overall grooming and development.
Ma'am, along with Miheeka, I feel Immensely Happy and Proud to be associated with Lotus
Valley School.
I really hope and pray that the situation becomes conducive and our kids join back school
and we also get an opportunity to meet each other in person.
Please Take Good Care Ma'am.
Once again Many Congratulations!
Warm Regards

Appreciation - Virtual sports day
Good Evening Ma’am,
The virtual sports day held on 31st August was a beautiful experience. It was a
great morning, to watch every child perform their best. A special mention to the
sports teachers and the class teacher for the way they trained the kids virtually and
kept them motivated.
The sports activities were very innovative and interesting and kids loved every
task assigned to them.

Congratulations on being a Scholar (2020-21)
Dear Ms.Malhotra
Truly appreciate the congratulatory message.
Aditya is growing leaps and bounds under your able guidance and able to soar
new heights by nouvelle initiatives that he has been taking under Smriti's wings
to shape his overall personality from academics, sports to extra-curricular
activities.
I firmly believe that my lovely wife Smriti is more responsible for Aditya's
success at Lotus Valley than me and I should take this opportunity to
acknowledge her dedication in bringing up Aditya in the most responsible
manner, single-handedly.
I trust that Smriti is also adding immense value to your esteemed organization in
multiple ways and I am also thankful for the opportunity that you have provided
her to be of service.
I come from a hospitality background where the pandemic has impacted many of
us adversely in many different ways, therefore, getting this wonderful news has
been like bringing sunshine to my day.
I am sure to look you up the next time I am in India and pay my respects in
person.

Mail of appreciation
Hello Ma'am!
Hope you are doing well.
I write this mail to thank you for the wonderful learning experience that the kids
had at school today. It has been a really long break and though there is anxiety
and fear, we needed to get started and must add, you guys have done an amazing
job!!
Rajveer was really so happy when he got back and we are happy too to see him
enjoy the true essence of schooling and learning in a safe environment.
The "Flip Teaching" session added to the "Real-Time " experience of learning at
school.
I sincerely thank you and the entire team at LVIS for pulling it off so well. May
God bless us all and may our learning continue in a smooth manner going
forward.
Warm regards
