awarded “Winner” in a “National
Level Essay Writing Competition –
2021” under Senior Category which
was organised by ‘Experience Japan’.
She wrote an essay on the topic,
“Language: Reflection Of Our
Culture” and described how as children
we are exposed to a language which
becomes our mother tongue, and how
when we grow older, it evolves to what
is spoken at home. She also described
how everyday life is dependent on
language, while taking examples from
her own life from when she interacts
with people who come from different
backgrounds, and speak languages
different to hers. She truly believes that
language has been, and will continue to
remain one of the most integral
expressions of our cultures, and
although it may appear to divide us, it
brings us all closer than ever before.
The judgement was done on the basis of
relevance of the theme,
comprehensiveness, originality and
insight of a fresh way of looking at
things and critical view of the subject.
Kavya Sondhi of XII Galileo also
participated for the same and was
acknowledged for her efforts.
We congratulate Avishi and Kavya for
their success and efforts to bring laurels

future endeavours. Keep it up!

REMEMBERING DANISH SIDDIQUI
There are times, when words seem to fail to convey the vast magnitude of pain
and suffering. When the sides are divided in black and white, it is the capturing
of shadow and light that makes you relieve the moment you never visited for a
split second. Danish Siddiqui was a Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist. He
worked with many news agencies most prominently with Reuters. He has been
published in several magazines and newspapers such as National Geographic
Magazine, New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post etc.
His work took him far and wide from covering North Korea to coming home
and clicking away the brutalities in Kashmir and students at Jamia. He
covered the riots and communal violence in Delhi and covered the farmers
protest as well. It was his drone shots of funeral pyres and COVID-19 patients
that shook the nation to its core.
In the age where “trauma porn” is used to attract one’s gaze, Siddiqui’s rigid
morals made sure that his subjects were treated with dignity and respect, often
missing from other journalists work. While others captured tears, agony and
beaten-up bodies, Siddiqui covered lives, presence and the subject’s essence.
This can be seen in his coverage of migrant workers. It was the simple
technique of shooting at the subject’s eye level that reflected the respect he
held for them. He went far and wide. He went where his camera went.
On a project covering the armed conflict between the Afghan army and the
Taliban, he met his untimely demise on July 16,2021 where he was shot to
death, doing what he loved- covering the truth. One can hear people
remembering him, mourning him from journalists all around the world to the
US Government, but the silence that brews in our own backyard speaks a
different tune. Danish Siddiqui was a hero to me. Rest in power sir.

THE SOLAR ECLIPSE
Here it’s a wonderful sunny day,
For it will go far away.
As there is a solar eclipse,
And a sight out the window, not to be
slipped.
If you give a sight…
You might go blind.
It all goes dark,
And there would be no mark.
Of anybody;
As its rays are too strong.

IT’S OKAY TO BE SCARED
The future is a strange creature. Sometimes it wraps a finger around your tightening
throat, like steel that soaks warmth. Then you feel its lips by your ear, and its breath
makes you shiver. It whispers in a curt echo, I’m waiting for you.
And sometimes it’s the lover we dream to meet on hazy sunny mornings, the moment
we wake up. It’s like waiting for the sun’s warmth to melt on our skin and for ice
cream to melt in our mouths after a long run. It’s a boulevard of pulsing dreams.
I fear the future, and maybe you do too, because big decisions are daunting, growing
up is intimidating, watching days blurring into photographs and memories and journal
entries is way too sudden.
Questions like “what am I meant to do in life?” are hard to answer—and uncertain.
Questions like “who am I?” are scarier, with ever-changing and not always nice
answers.
Getting into college, going for higher studies maybe, then after that a career. And all
the things in between. Life. What if I fail? What if I don’t fulfil my dreams? What if I
make big mistakes and do nothing worthwhile? What if I’m not unique and what if I
don’t stand out? What if I haven’t and will never achieve enough? What if?
I fear not living a meaningful life. I fear tomorrow. And I fear my fear. It’s stupid, isn’t
it? To be scared?
No, not really. That’s what I’ve begun to realize. To be scared is to be human. It’s
normal and it’s okay. In fact, it’s good to have the right amount of fear, sometimes. It
helps us grow, it gives us opportunities to be brave; it helps us learn about ourselves.
There is a difference between fearlessness and courage.
Today is for us to make dumb mistakes and learn from them, to ask what seem like
stupid questions and get answers. Today is for us to accept and embrace our fear.
Yeah, I’m scared. Terrified, actually, because things can be pretty confusing. And
that’s okay. That’s how it’s meant to be—imperfect, full of obstacles, and seemingly
impossible.
Bravery means to move forward even if your knees buckle and your mouth tastes bad.
It’s to keep moving towards our goals despite our fear. It’s to fail, fail and fail and still
try to succeed despite how hard it is, despite how hopeless it seems, despite how
cliché this article is.
However it may seem, I believe in you. I believe in all of us—the youth of the world.

LITTLE MISS ABIGAIL
Let me tell you a tale from far away, SAANVI RANJAN
About a girl named Abigail! VIII- AMAZON
With her blonde silky and soft strawberry locks,
She used to be always on the clock.
Oh, how she hated to be late!
Thinking, she would miss her close mates!
However, one day, miss Abigail woke up at 8.00 am,
Forgetting to feed the lambs,
Getting to school was delayed,
Oh, how she was full of hate!
Yet, On the quick impatient walk to the school,
She met a strong and dangerous looking wolf!
Here, our little miss punctuality,
Was faced by the cruelty
She tried to run,
Yet something happened a sudden,
She tripped over the stones
And she was all alone,
With that hideous creature!
She shrieked and she screamed,
Yet, the wolf calmly leaned,
Towards Her,
Said-
“I might be hideous looking, and I know I am fairly deceiving.”
“ yet trust me little miss, my heart is as soft as those locks, and I
have never caused anyone’s loss!”
“let me help you get up!”
As the little pudgy little lady got up,
Looked at her deep cuts!
Yet, felt guilty for judging the kind wolf
By his looks!
The wolf helped her stand on her feet
And miss Abigail pleaded for an apology,
And the wolf being as kind as could be,
Accepted her sorry!
And miss Abigail went on her way, along the rugged forest street!
So, we understand little Abigail love,
To never understand a person or an animal by their cover!
The end!

ACHIEVEMENTS
When you see people who want help,
Run as fast to help as you could.
No one would yell,
As that will be something good.
When you see people crying,
Go and give them a shoulder to cry
on.
But don’t you dare start lying,
And don’t moan.
When you see people in trouble,
Go and make them less guilty.
When you play a game,
Play with all the techniques and rules.
Win or lose is far, try as much as
could
When you see your opponents win
and achieve,
Give it a smile and live it.
You know that you are the winner,
Cause the biggest achievement in
life,
Is when you help the people till you
are alive.

FROM THE ARMS OF AN IMMIGRANT
MOTHER
The warm blanket lay softly over my baby face
Or so she tells me
The life we were escaping told a different story
One about empty stomachs and tattered clothes
The truth is
It was poverty that wrapped and tugged at me
Not the soft cotton my mother talks about
We ate food on fine dinner plates and silver
cutlery
Or so she tells me
Her meagre salary at the gas station told a
different story
One about salted peanuts and cashews that tasted
like bleach
It was the crinkling tinfoil and our bare hands that
we ate food off of
Not the fine dishes she speaks of
But when she tells me pretty lies about the past
I let her
I let her be the dentures that help me chew our
past
I let her be the soft cloth that wrapped me tightly
I let her be everything she hopes I will become
Because
It wasn’t foreign soil my mother planted her feet
on when we landed
It was all the tearful begging
It was all the rolls of prayer wheels at the
monastery
It was all the stashing of modest banknotes in a
shoebox
It was hope
And it made the concrete of the landing strip
