2 English Skills Book - 7

Foreword

English Skills is a comprehensive skills development course in English
language specially designed for Nepalese students. It has a systematic
skills based approach to language teaching and learning with carefully
worked out lessons and tasks that lead up to clear communicative
outcomes.
The authors believe that the development of all four skills of language,
viz. listening, speaking, reading and writing, requires a clear and
explicit focus on the actual process of communication as well as close
integration of those skills within a learning task. This is to ensure that
the students use the information and ideas from one skills activity
while doing another while at the same time develop awareness of
the communication itself. This course has been crafted with this core
concept in mind.
Evidently, learner development is a vital feature of this entire course. Over
the ten stages of this comprehensive course, students are encouraged
to develop as independent and active learners of English. The authors
stay confident that the skills and habits that they learn through this
course will amply prepare them for their higher educational pursuits
besides making them conscientious learners for life.
The authors of this course also recognise the fact that students in the
same class often come from different socio-economic backgrounds and
do not possess the same abilities and experiences of life. Therefore, they
are at different levels in the same class. English Skills provides sufficient
chances for students with less knowledge, experience or language ability
to build up their knowledge through practice volume and repetition.
At the same time, more proficient students have the opportunity to
expand on the same activity, extend it to new directions or approach it
through new angles. This is possible due to the open-ended and multi-
level nature of activities and tasks included in English Skills.
In the end, results count. The success of the students will be deemed the
success of the course as well. The authors welcome any suggestions or
feedback from students, teachers, administrators and parents.
Happy teaching and learning!

From A Teenager’s Side

- Olivia

I hear my mom scream,

"Bags, books, your comb, and cream

Scattered on the bed with those jeans.

This is how you keep your room clean?"

Do you sometimes forget that I'm a teen?

I hear my father say,
"Wake up, get up, and chase your dreams.
This is the time you should choose your stream.
Leave your Twitter, songs, and films.
Don't waste your time in front of a computer screen."
Well, why don't you understand? I'm a teen.

I hear my friends complain,
"We know it's tough, but we have to tell you,
You can be rude without having any clue.
It's hard to handle you during your mood swings,
as you can go crazy 'cause you don't know what you mean."
Why don't you get it? Like you, I'm a teen.

How to make a difference!

More and more young people are taking on volunteer work nowadays. Some
even travel to other side of the world and do unpaid work for a charity or other
nonprofit organizations there. They help to build homes for poor families, teach
children English, take care of orphans or help to protect an endangered species.
There is a wide variety of voluntary jobs to choose from.

A number of charity groups organise Singer Amrit Gurung: Teach for Nepal
educational programmes for children volunteer teaching in a government school
around the world. Many students
volunteer for these types of projects.
They teach subjects like English or
Mathematics or Science to children while
staying in their community and getting to
know the people and their culture. It is a
learning experience for both the children
and the teacher.

Young people who are good with their
hand or simply would like to help in a
very practical way can participate in
one of the many construction projects.
Several charity organizations help build
houses or schools for poor children
around the world. In Lapubesi Gorkha,
a team of young volunteers built a
British Prince Harry working with his secondary school for village students.

the voluntary work for the construction

of the school building. Other similar projects are going on across villages of
Nepal especially after the devastating earthquake that hit the country in 2015.

For people interested in wildlife, conservation groups organize volunteer
holidays throughout the world. You can help wildlife research in various parts
of our country like protecting tigers, rhinos and wild elephants in Chitwan or
working to dig more information about unique variety of butterflies in Nepal

18 English Skills Book - 7

or working or finding out various kinds of herbs in the country. Since Nepal
has diverse geography and biodiversity, people around the world come here
to study about Bengal tigers, snow-leopards, red pandas and many other
endangered species. Those volunteers also get a chance to know the cultural
life of people in our culturally diverse country and enjoy the gorgeous view of
nature that has been in the lap of the Himalayas.

Therefore, a volunteer holiday is for people who want to make a difference in
the world and are prepared to give up their own time, money and effort to do
it. However, the volunteers have to be realist and understand that they cannot
change the world in two or three weeks. To some volunteers it seems that they
are not doing much by helping out for only a couple of weeks. But, in fact,
every bit of help counts. Thanks to young volunteers, the lives of millions of
people around the world are improving.

Dhurmus Suntali Iconic Settlements

Today you are going to
read about Manik Purja’s
unique hobby. He does
not have hobbies like
many of his friends have.
He loves to chase UFO.
He calls himself a UFO
hunter. Do you know what a UFO is? A UFO is short form of unidentified
flying object. People talk about it a lot. However, they don’t know what
exactly it is.

English Skills Book - 7 25

A strange shape is moving across the sky. Is it a bird? Is it an aeroplane?
Or is it a UFO? Manik Purja is fascinated by the possibility of life on other
planets, so in his free time he tries to find out what these objects are. We
asked him some questions about his unusual hobby.
Manik, why are you so interested in UFOs?
Well, thousands of people see strange objects in the sky all over the world.
Most of these are planets, meteors, or military planes – but what about the
rest? I’m a very curious person, so I want to find an explanation!

And what exactly does your hobby involve?
Well, I started a UFO club and we mostly investigate sightings. We interview
witnesses and analyse videos and photos. Sometimes we go out to a UFO
‘hotspot’, too. In fact, we’re going out tonight. We usually go high up on
a rooftop or a hillside. If we see something strange, we record as much
information as we can! We use cameras, telescopes and other devices. Then,
we analyse the information on our laptops.
Maybe some of our readers are thinking about taking up UFO hunting now!
What advice do you have for them?
Well, anyone can become a UFO hunter. You just need to be enthusiastic
and patient. You also need to join a local UFO club. This way, you find out
where the UFO hot-spots are and you can have some witnesses if you spot
something. So, what are you waiting for? UFO hunting is a lot of fun, and
you never know - you might just turn science fiction into science fact!

Writing

Personal writing: Writing about friends’ hobbies

To have better writing, it is good to follow the writing process properly. The
first step to write a document is to do some brainstormings and making an
idea web.

If you are writing about your friends’ hobbies, you need to decide who you
are going to write about. Then, you need to find out their hobbies. As a part
of preparation you may have to interview your friends. Look at Krishna’s
brainstorming:

coin ancient
collection modern
Jeevan
racing
Shikha My Friends publishing
Hobbies
cycling
Samjhana

cartooning

English Skills Book - 7 29

Now draft your document

After you start writing, you may get new ideas as well. You start to write
freely using your brainstorming and new ideas that have come. Your draft
just give a kind of rough shape to your written work.

My Classmates’ Hobbies Which details
do you recognize
It’s time for an Excel Paradise Elementary from Krishna’s
Quiz! Who is the Excel Cycling Champion brainstorming
of 2018? Who has boxes full of coins in his
closet? Whose name do you see in every Which line gives the
edition of school magazine? They’re fellow clue for further details
Excel Paradisers, students with some of the essay? How does
amazing hobbies. the writer grab the
readers attention?
The first person to be noted is no other
than Shikha who has been a part of a local
bike-racing club. .....

After you have prepared a draft, share it with your friends. They may give
you some comments. Then, improve it with editing. While editing, you
must consider the following questions:
• Do I keep in mind what my audience knows or needs to know?
• Do I stick to my topic? If not, why not?
• Do I give my audience enough information?
• Do I give my audience too much information?
• Are the ideas in an order that makes sense?

Then, prepare the final draft. Before that, read how Krishna has prepared
the final draft ready for publication

My Classmates’ Hobbies

It’s time for an Excel Paradise Elementary Quiz! Who is the Excel Cycling
Champion of 2018? Who has boxes full of coins in his closet? Whose name
do you see in every edition of school magazine? They’re fellow Excel
Paradisers, students with some amazing hobbies.

Take Shikha, for example. She and her sister Dipshikha love cycling. They
both have been a part of a local bike-racing club for two years. This spring
Shikha wanted to learn even more about racing. Her club sent her to a
four-day racing camp sponsored by the Cycling Club Kathmandu. “I never
thought racing camp would be so super,” Shika says. “I found some new
friends there, and I learned a lot about being a better racer!”

Samjhana is born for drawing. She loves cartooning. She has been drawing
pictures since she was three. She can draw animals, spaceships, or anything
else you can imagine. She makes cartooning look easy, but she works really
hard at it. She has sketchbooks filled with cartoon ideas. Two pages, for
example, show a horse running, jumping, sticking its head out a stable
door, and winking. Samjhana’s favourite subjects, however, are people. She
says, “I learn by studying people’s faces and watching them move. I think
that’s why my cartoons are realistic as well as funny.”

Jeevan loves playing basketball and football, but for his favorite hobby he
can stay indoors. You see, Jeevan is a numismatist, a coin collector. Jeevan
began his collection three years ago when he got some new Quatari coins
from his uncle. Now he has filled his chest with lots of coins from different
countries. He has different types of coins from the UK, the USA, China,
Japan, India and of course from Nepal. He has even collected some old
coins which were minted some hundred years ago. Jeevan says, “Collecting
coins also gives you a lot of information. The picture on it, date gives a lot
of ideas about time and people at that time.”

These people with amazing hobbies have made our class really amazing. I
admire them for their skills.

2Lesson Remembering
the Past

1 Read, listen and sing. - William Wordsworth

Song seem’d = seemed
roll’d = rolled
She dwelt among untrodden ways
Beside the spring of Dove.
A maid whom there were none to praise
And very few to love.

A violet by a mossy stone
Half-hidden from the Eye!
-Fair, as star when only one
Is shining in the sky.

She lived unknown, and few could know
When Lucy ceased to be;
But she is in her grave, and, oh,
The difference to me!

A slumber did my spirit seal,
I had no human fears:
She seem’d a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.

No motion has she now, no force
She neither hears nor sees
Roll’d round in earth’s diurnal course
With rocks and stones and trees !

Personal Stories

A. ________________________________________________

Our house got collapsed
during Gorkha earthquake
in 2015. It was a terrible
time. We had to stay
outside in a tent for more
than six months. Then, we
made a make-shift house
and lived there.

After the aftershocks of the quake abated, our father decided to
construct a house at the same spot where our old house was. Actually,
our old house was pretty old. It was constructed by our great granddad,
a well-known pundit and astrologer, about seventy years ago. The
house was solid and saw at least four generations of people.

Most of the debris had been removed. The stones were put in a pile.
We needed to dig for base of the house. Since there weren’t enough
labourers available to get the work done, father told us all to get ready
to work. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon. My father along with two
brothers and I was taking out the foundation stones of the old house
one by one.

English Skills Book - 7 35

As we dug a couple of feet, my brother felt something made of iron.
When we unearthed the box, it was full of jewelleries—rings, necklaces
and bracelets.

“Gosh!” my father said, “I suppose someone hid these things in the
ground—perhaps during a war!”

Then I said, “Maybe our great granddad had kept it for us. He was a
great soothsayer. He must have known what would fall on us days to
come.”

Anyway, the money we got from the jewelleries was enough to
construct our new house and we are living in it now.

B. ________________________________________________

I came home tired after a day of
work. I was attending numerous
meetings all day. I was tired, hungry
and looking forward to spending a
good time with my family. I walked
into the house. Nothing seemed to
be in place.

My oldest daughter, Lily, was watching TV. She was eating honey
straight from the jar. She had all her belongings thrown around her.
My younger son, Suyog, was a bigger mess. He was playing a remote
control game and was hitting the coffee table now and then. The things
that were on the table were all falling down. He had also spilled some
orange juice and his clothes looked as if they were dipped in dirt. The
room was in total chaos. My youngest daughter, Neha, was crying out
loud because the dog had eaten all her food. Nobody was consoling or
taking care of her. She was only two years then.

I wondered where my wife was. I was very annoyed by this mess. I
have always valued discipline and it made me furious and impatient
to see my kids in such a mess. I went running into the room to show it
to my wife. Then, I was shocked to see my wife writhing on the floor.
She had a severe stomachache.

C. ________________________________________________

As I was going outside, I was a little nervous because I was going to ride on
my dad’s motorcycle.

“Come on. Get up,” said my dad cheerfully.
“Okay,” I answered. But just as I was getting onto the seat, I burnt myself

on one of the pipes!
“Ow!” I yelled as I started to cry.
“Are you all right?” asked my

mum.
“No,” I answered.
“Come here,” said my mum.

“Let’s take a look at the burn. It’s
not so bad but I don’t think you
should go for a ride right now.”
I felt glad that my mum had said
that.
“Aw, come on. It won’t hurt once we get going,” said my dad.
Then, he picked me up and set me on the seat of the motorcycle.
“Dad, I’m not sure I want to go!” I said.

“Nonsense. It’ll be fun,” said my dad. And we took off.

I have to admit that during the ride, I started to laugh. My burn hardly hurt
anymore. I wasn’t nervous and I had a great ride.

I’m really glad my dad convinced me to get on the motorcycle. If he hadn’t,
I probably never would have gotten on it again. From that day on, I knew
I would never give up after I got hurt. I would just get back up and try it
again.

D. ________________________________________________

My aunt, Minu, had a terrible experience last Saturday. You won’t
believe what happened! A thief burst into her house while she was

asleep. That night she was alone at home. She was just sleeping
peacefully when someone broke the glass in the sliding door!

The sound woke her up. She
heard the door open. Thus
she hurriedly reached for
the phone by the bed and
called the police. She told
the operator in shaking voice
that there was an intruder in
her home.

To save herself, she hid in her
bedroom closet while the thief was sneaking around her study room.
Soon, she heard sirens as the police sped to her building. From the
crack in the closet door, she saw the thief as he ran outside with her
computer.

The police jumped out of their cars and followed the thief but he
managed to get away in a car that was waiting for him. The police got
back into their cars and drove after him. Later, we came to know that
the police caught the thief a few miles from her building.

She felt really frightened by all this and called my dad to take her to
us. My father and I went to her house and brought her along with us.
She was upset and scared. It took her three days to come to normal.

Writing a memoir
A memoir is a collection of memories that someone writes about his
or her own life. Has anything made you feel very happy, sad, mad,
excited, hopeful, inspired or regretful? You can write about particular
situations, places or persons that make the moment important for you.

Parts of a short memoir

Paragraph 1: Introduction (Who-Where-When-What)
You set the scene here with the mentioning of who was involved, when it
happened and where it happened.
Paragraph 2-4: Main body
This part consists of two or more paragraphs. Here, you develop your story
with detailed description of the events in the order they happened.
Final paragraph: Conclusion
This paragraph includes final comments or reactions. A surprising ending
makes a long-lasting impression on the reader.

English Skills Book - 7 45

Language in a memoir

While writing a memoir, you should normally use past tenses. Varieties of
adjectives and adverbs also make your story more attractive to the reader.
Therefore, you should try to use the words that have appeal to our senses.
The narrator of a memoir is always ‘I’ because it is about personal
experiences, feelings and opinions of the writer.
The events of a memoir are arranged in a sequence. You need to use
connectors or linking words to show the sequence of the events.
Linking words like: at first, soon, suddenly, while, when, before, next, then,
after that, then or as help us to show the sequence of events in the story.

a painful shriek of the deer. Anyway, dad managed to stop the car. We

quickly jumped out of the car and ran to see if the deer was hurt.

We found it lying in the road. ..
..............................., we thought it
was dead. Then, the deer opened
its eyes and we realized that it
was alive. Meantime, we could
hear rustles from the bush. Some
of the deer were there peeping
through the bush. As the hurt one
was lying on the road, a couple
of them came near and smelt the
nose and ears of the hurt one. It
looked as if they were whispering something. Then, it opened its large soft
brown eyes. As it looked at us, One of them gave a kick to our car and one
of the sidelights of our car got broken. ................,two of other deer escorted
it slowly towards the bush. ................................, they disappeared from our
sight.

That day I realized that even animals have feeling, friendships and
affections. They can help each other when they are in problem. Thus, I
would say never underestimate animals. They too have feelings.
