already, yet, just, still
We often use just, already, yet and still with the present perfect to talk
about recent actions.
‘Just’ is usually used with the present perfect tense and it means ‘a short
time ago’.
I have just finished my work. She has just baked a cake.
‘Already’ is used to say that something has happened earlier than the time
of speaking.
He has already submitted his assignments.
‘Just’ and ‘already’ come after ‘have’ or ‘has’ and before the main verb.
‘Still’ is used to talk about something that hasn’t finished – especially
when we expected it to finish earlier.
I’ve been waiting for over an hour and the bus still hasn’t come.
‘Still’ generally comes before hasn’t or haven’t but after the subject
specially when it comes in negative sentences. (Still can come in other
tenses as well.)
Yet’ is used to talk about something which is expected to happen. It means
‘at any time up to now’. It is used in questions and negatives.

Reading
37 Read and learn.
Do you want to be a writer?
Here are some tips on becoming a writer.
A. Read everything you can. Most writers are great
readers. They read because they love to lose
themselves in books. They like reading a good
description as it is very pleasing for them as if
they are eating their favourite food. As you read,
pay attention to the words carefully. Observe the
characters on the page speaking to you.
Think about the types of book you like to read. Do you like stories that
are full of unexpected twists? Do you like to know about the wonders
of the world or pleasing characters from the pages of a storybook? Do
you like funny stories or serious stories with moral lessons? You can get
all types of books in the market: mysteries, short stories, biographies,
novels, essays, poems and many more. Reading these books will give
you wonderful ideas about your own characters and people around.
B. Keep a notebook. You often tend to forget good ideas if you do not
record them at the right time. If you get in the habit of carrying a
notebook, you can write down anything you want to remember. When
you are talking to friends or waiting for a bus, some new ideas about
a character or a scene for a story might come in your mind. You might
write them instantly if you have a notebook with you. You might
have a dream that you don’t want to forget. You can note it in your
notebook. If you have a diary or a notebook, you can write the lyrics
of the songs you love. These everyday thoughts and observations can
be materials for a story or a poem or an essay that you write one day.
58 English Skills Book - 7
C. Write every day. One piece of advice
that nearly all writers agree on is
that writers must write. It doesn’t
matter even if you feel that you
have nothing to say. The important
thing is that you write every single
day. As said above, you can write
about everyday thoughts. You
can write about what happened at
school today or how you felt when
you participated in an event. Just
take a pen and a sheet of paper
and write whatever comes to your
mind. When you get into the habit
of writing, good ideas will start flowing.
D. Join or start a writing group. Do you have any friends who enjoy writing?
Think about starting a writing group with some friends who have similar
interests. It helps you have the support of other writers. You will also
receive good suggestions about how to make your work better.
E. Stay positive. Always think that you can write well. Once you are
convinced that your writing is good enough, you can publish it in
your school magazine. You can even send your writings to local
newspapers and magazines. Best of all, you can have your own blog
where you can publish your articles online. You can get a free blog at
www.bossnepal.com.
Writing can be one of the most satisfying jobs in the world. Most
writers feel lucky to do what they do and wouldn’t trade their career
for any other. You could be one of them someday.
A writer writes with different purposes. Some write to inform people
and some write to entertain. But some also write to instruct. They tell
us what to do.

Dear Farina, 22
I hope all is well at your school. Everything here is passing by
so quickly. The summer months are almost gone. It’s only been a
couple of months since we parted. However, it feels like ages. Even
though it’s super sad that we don’t live just a bus ride away and
have admitted in different schools, I really hope that we will meet
soon one day.
Have your first terminal routines come? How have you been 3
studying there? Have any teachers left the school or they are the 6
same people? It must have been very exciting to study English with
Gaurav Sir. He is actually an excellent guy.
Here at new school, I have made some new friends. We have also
made a writer’s club. We meet on every Friday after school at the
school premises itself. Our English teacher, Mr Smith, who is from
Canada, guides us in the club. It’s really fun to be in the club and
write some verses. We have been learning to write some Limericks
recently.
Well, here, my parents have been working vigorously to build
a new house. Besides, taking his duty at the office, he has been
working extra hours in the evening. For mother, it is even tougher
as she has been looking after all the affairs related to the building.
The labourers have been working swiftly. Maybe by next week, we
will be able to shift in our own house.
Again, I hope all is well with you. We all miss you tons, Farina!
Have a fun time in school, and stay safe. Please write back when
you get this. I’d love to hear all about how everything is going.
Best regards, 4

Grammar
Voice : Active and Passive
What is voice in English grammar?
Voice is a verb’s relation with its subject. When a subject receives the action
indicated by the verb it becomes passive voice. Otherwise, it becomes an
active voice. For examples:
Rohan eats an apple.
In this sentence, the main action is ‘eating’, the subject is ‘Rohan’ and the
subject does the action. Thus, it is an active sentence.
An apple is eaten by Rohan.
In this sentence, the main action is ‘eating’, the subject is
‘an apple’ and the action happens on the subject. Thus, it
is a passive sentence.
Why do we use passive voice?
We use passive voice when:
The actor is unknown: The book was stolen. (We don’t know who stole
it.)
The actor is irrelevant: The battery in
the mobile phone
has been changed
(We are not
interested who
changed it.)
We do not want to be clear about who did it: Mistakes were made. (We do
not want to say who made them.)
We are talking about a general truth: Rules are made to be broken.
We want to emphasize the person or thing that receive the action.
The palace was built in 1814 BS by Prithvi Narayan Shah.

News story
The Lead: The most important information [who? what? where? when?
why? how?] (Answer as many questions as possible.) Write one or two
sentences in about 30 words.

Put descriptions, quotations, and explain the details
here with necessary arguments
The Ending: Extra information

next
While writing a news story you must write the most important information
at first. You should try to answer 5 Ws and 1 H as far as possible. Before you
start to write a news story, you should list the information first. Your first
paragraph or the lead should not be too long. It can be written in one or two
sentences within 30 words.
The next part of a news story is the body. The body of a news story gives
details. It includes at least a quotation or description of scene and other
aspects. It can be more than two or three paragraphs. We should change
the paragraph if we are quoting different persons or change the reference.
News story ends with some extra information. For an example, if you are
talking about an accident, you may include if similar type of accidents had
happened before at the same spot or if the government is doing something
related to it. Some short news story may skip this part.

Tomorrow’s world
Think about a normal day. What do you usually wear? What technology do
you use? What’s your house like? Now let’s see what everyday life will be
like in the future.
What will we be wearing
in the future? While some
scientists are developing
textiles that allow the
wearer to generate
electricity as they walk
and others are working
on clothes that monitor
your fitness. A doctor has
invented a spray-on fabric.
The spray contains minute
cotton, wool, linen or acrylic
fibres that dry instantly on your skin and turn into garments like t-shirt or
tops. You can wear it, wash it and then wear it again—just like the rest of
the clothes in your wardrobe. Then, when you get bored, you can dissolve
it and use the materials again to make something new. It will take some
years to develop more and it’ll probably cost around one thousand to one
thousand five hundred rupees a can—cheap enough for trendsetters to
wear something new every day. The doctor who is developing such spray
clothes hopes that in the future there will be spray booths in stores where
you can drop in to design something new. They are also looking into its use
for furniture coverings.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could just think of something you want and
print it out on a computer? Well, believe it or not, you can. For the first
time ever, scientists have found a way to print out fully-working machine
90 English Skills Book - 7
using a 3D printer. The first item
is a fully functional bicycle made
of nylon called the Airbike. It’s as
strong as steel but much lighter. It
comes out as a complete bike with no
assembly required. The possibilities
for this new technology are endless.
Medical researchers hope that with a
special cartridge of human cells and
bio-friendly gel, it can be used to print
out skin grafts for burn victims. They
have already managed to demonstrate
the potential medical uses by printing
out a copy of a human ear in 30
minutes.
What a wonderful house it would
be if you had someone to keep
track of your health and many
other issues? Now, things are
going to be possible. Scientists
have developed a network of voice
activated computers that runs the
e-home: a house of the future. The
computer stands as a window
pane. As you arrive home with the
shopping, it tells you who phoned
you while you were out. You put your groceries down on the kitchen table
and it tells you how to cook them and gives you dietary advice. As you move
into the living room, it organizes your evening entertainment. A window
pane made of smart glass becomes as TV, wallpaper changes on demand
and every surface doubles as a touch screen with instant internet access.
The Microsoft Company has demonstrated much of the similar technology
and all of it is going to be on the market within the next few years. So,
before long we will be taking to the walls!
