Kaolin, feldspar and quartz are the three mineral components from
which the recipe for Richard Ginori porcelain is made. Each of these
substances is ground and mixed together, and each one plays a key
role in defining the unique and distinctive character of porcelain.
Kaolin is the most important raw material as it gives the porcelain
the plasticity it needs to be modelled, thrown and pressed into the
shape of specific objects. Once fired, it gives the piece its toughness
and strength.
Feldspars are rare, and they are used in porcelain mixtures because
they promote vitrification of the fired products.
Quartz, on the other hand, is the most important complementary raw
material, and used to varying degrees in all mixtures. Depending on
the percentage used, it acts as a degreaser, refractory material or even
a flux, binding itself to the feldspar to create the “skeleton” of the
object.
