Landscape design, to a certain extent, determines the present and the future of the city, shapes the environment and in turn shapes ourselves. Landscape, it is our culture and our ideas reflected on the earth; it almost is our desire, our perseverance, our limitations, our fears...It basically sketches the outline of the state and appeals of being a civilised man. Each year, Chinese people embark on a construction spree with around half of the world’s cement or other building materials. The most massive and burgeoning urbanization creates endless wealth, opportunities and problems as well, which, of course, creates an exceptional "golden age" for landscape design. For the industry of landscape design, this is an era filled with orders, one in which orders continuously generate new design firms; this is an era in which government and developers invariably attach great importance to the “quality” of landscape; this is an era in which affluent areas and the affluent classes attempt to define or need to be defined by the environment; this is an era in which design companies can make money despite their varying qualities; this is also an era in which the land and environmental pollution are intensified, and in which the relationship between people and the land increasingly deteriorates. Yes, we can easily see the “golden age” from the cases of landscape design of the period. Based on the prosperous mentality brought by the growth of social wealth, the cases include direct copy of a variety of “peep show”; complicated application of gorgeous materials (expensive natural stones, exotic plants, etc.); and also design renderings brimming with the atmosphere of the flourishing age. Landscape, for the government, is a calling card of city, a governor image project and a standard of a garden city; for real estate developers, is a social status symbol, one of deciding factor of property prices, an integral part of the real estate culture. Landscape designers, FOREWORD unprecedentedly, have become an indispensible pen of the era, which directly describes hobbies, funs, and vigorous material desires of this era. People cannot avoid being coerced by the times. Even if they are coerced, the power of thinking, after all, is sprouting. What is a good city? Good dwelling? Good landscape? Good design? If we are not always following a slogan, then, what is ecology? Sustainable development? Consciousness and creativity of the landscape? We fortunately see the efforts for some ideas presented in the landscape works, which demonstrate “other things” beyond the “golden age” prosperity. These things involve thinking and inheritance upon traditions, emphasis and promotion of regions, regeneration and utilisation of former industrial site, care and help for social vulnerable groups, remediation and restoration of contaminated lands, sociological understanding and remodeling of urban public space, discussion of the new boundary of urban - rural relationship, and so forth. This kind of thinking and work, as it were, will eventually become a mainstream and a prairie fire. Nowadays in China, landscape, of course, remains committed to exploring and creating environmental and visual beauty, rather than being confined to it. Furthermore, it will become the subject and power to solve contemporary environmental problems, or it should not only be confined to dressing up for the city, but work for the health of the city as well. Contemporary Architecture in China - Urban Landscape truly brings together many contemporary landscape works. It is the abundance that constitute the contemporary design world, which has a precious value as “archives” and “bibliography”. The compilation task is arduous. CONGHUA HOT SPRING VILLAS Conghua, Guangdong Province PLACE Design Group Site Area: 150,000m2 Completion Time: 2008 Designer: PLACE Design Group Photographer: MF Advertising Agency Incorporating the natural beauty and unique therapeutic spring water found on this site was a key strategy for this project. Complex issues involving dramatic level changes and reservation of existing vegetation in key areas were finally resolved through super modern design of the project... Conghua Hot Springs Villa is located in an area quite that is famous for its spring water. The Place Design Group works closely with the client to create stunning living environments that are fully coordinated with and complement architectural design. The project combines the unique advantage of geography of Conghua with the design of modern residential building to create a high quality residential area including its own spas with natural spring water. The refreshing warm water in the Conghua Hot Spring froths to the surface at 12 different springs and the clear water are enriched with more than 10 kinds of rich minerals like calcium, magnesium, and sodium, and it enjoys an average temperature of 60 degrees centigrade. The landscape design of this project has been integrated with the modern and contemporary architectural design in order to create a very open and prosperity atmosphere. Simultaneously, the landscape design uses the technique of stepwise introduction, which will take you from a scenic hillside to a water feature area at the entrance through to the community square where a large level change has been utilised in an imaginative way. SHENYANG VANKE HIGH-RISE RESIDENCE Shenyang, Liaoning Province WSP Architects This project is located near the university town in Hunnan District in Shenyang. Cornfield texture is still applied in the design to form the venation of idyllic scene. The axes formed by the roads in the city extend the city venation. These two venations interweave each other and integrate planning, architecture and design under the same theme. In the overall planning, the multiple space system are superposed based on the original texture, and the unit design is elaborately fused with the applied functions and the local culture elements. The high-rise towers enclosed to form the inside courtyard, and the dynamic north slab tower becomes the symbolic building of the community and the gate of the university town. At the same time, designers also rethought the differences between designed and practical constructions. The pathways, courtyards, gallery, water features, sales office as well as the buildings in the community all keep to the networking systems, overlying each other, which form a set of integrated living system. Longitudinal system spread out the whole living area. The gallery connects twelve residential buildings for the convenience of the residences. There are four units of boxes as the theme landscapes, namely, four courtyards of metal, wood, water and earth. The sales office near the entrance also adopts the box architecture style. The interior design of the sales office also follows the same logic, with the sinuous gallery connecting the interior function units. The running water in the courtyard twists and turns, running through the whole courtyard. The elevation of the building only retains the handrail of the balcony, aircondition place and louver which is used for shading the air-conditioner. All the other decorations are removed. The integrated effect is achieved through the construction of the wall itself, the terrace and other Master Plan necessary elements. formed by using the heat preservation construction, namely, the outside layer is dark grey and rough texture, which is like the shell of hard nuts; the inside layer is exquisite yellow which is like the flesh of the fruit. The south elevation adopts the thrown and dynamic balcony. To avoid the sense of oppression caused by the large grey colour of the north side façade, the sixth building in the centre of the courtyard has been treated in a special way. Then the rough façade surface has been painted light yellow and the smoothly inside surface has been treated into grey. To guarantee the capillary of the interior space of the courtyard, the sixth building is built on stilts. As a result, the two courtyards in the south and north are connected, and then the landscape and the vision capillary have been strengthened. 该项目位于沈阳浑南大学城。设计延续麦田的肌理而形成田园风景的 脉络,城市道路形成的轴线则引申出了现代都市的脉络。两条脉络相互交 织,将规划、建筑及景观设计统一在同一主题下。总体规划在尊重原有肌 理的基础上,进行了多重空间体系的叠加,单体形态设计注重了实用性与 地域文化的融合,同时,设计师也对设计与现实施工的差距进行了反思。 小区内的步行路、居游庭院、“抄手游廊”、水景、灯柱、售楼处及 建筑遵循园区网络布置,并一一叠加起来,组成一套完整的生活系统。纵 向的体系,罗列了整个园区的生活空间。“抄手游廊”连接12栋住宅楼, 方便居民通行;楼宇间设置4个以盒子为单元的主题景观,分别命名为金、 木、水、土的居游庭院;园区入口售楼处也采用盒式造型,售楼处的室内 设计也依据同样逻辑,以一条曲折回转的通廊将内部的功能“盒子”串联 起来;园区里的潺潺流水曲折回转,由南到北贯穿了整个景观庭院。 建筑立面仅保留了所必须的阳台栏杆、空调机位和遮挡空调的百页设计 元素,并取消了其余全部装饰,通过墙体构造本身和露台等必要构建元素达 020 9 8

BRC REDDISHWOOD HILL Chengdu, Sichuan Province SED Landscape Architects Ltd. This project, near the Wen-pi Rd, Chengdu and closed to Jian-an River, covers an area of 214,107 square metres. On the master plan, villa was laid-out as an arc shape around southeast 20° of the centre lake, and the distance among buildings is keeping 18 to 22 metres which is the suitable scale, on the west, the lake was surrounded by slope mount. However, the four groups are connected with each other; they keep themselves separate as well to certain extent. Reddishwood Hill combines the Chinese-classic-style architecture with the water and plants in an organic way. Taking the Chinese classical garden as the original version, and the pond of various shapes, folded water and the fountain as the centre, this project builds a strong modern Chinese garden landscape with abundant plants, stones and distinctive booth and pergola as the main content, decorated by lively sculptures, sketches and relief sculptures. The west is built as sloping fields, which is surrounded by the central lake of ten thousand square metres. In the whole design, we emphasize the philosophy of nature, modern and ecology via the exhibition of various spaces with different landscape layers. SHENZHEN VANKE KING METROPOLIS Shenzhen, Guangdong Province SED Landscape Architects Ltd. Site Area: 680,000m2 Completion Time: 2010 Designer: SED Landscape Architects Ltd. Photographer: ZHANG Zifeng Vanke King Metropolis is located at the north extended section of the “central axial belt of Shenzhen City”, where will be the expanding area of the urban centre also called the “secondary city centre” because of its large traffic hub function. The landscape design for Vanke King Metropolis was completed by SED in collaboration with Intaran Design Inc. and was inspired by the drawing structure and colour block characters of Mondrian, the master of painting. The designer divided Mondrian’s abstract painting into simple geometric patterns, so that lines and lines, lines and surfaces, surfaces and surfaces relate to each other, and that design elements including softscape and hardscape are adopted in the patterns so that substances in different materials, textures and colours are incorporated harmoniously, forming spaces relying on each other. FUSHUN VANKE PARADISO Fushun, Liaoning Province SED Landscape Architects Ltd. Theme Plan Site Area: 259,770m2 Completion Time: 2011 Designer: SED Landscape Architects Ltd. Photographer: ZENG Jiancong Being consistent with Thai style in Paradiso series of projects, SED positions this project as "the most livable riverside residence featured as a ecologically Thai garden". Areas surrounding the major landscape axis are given special zen concepts to create a meditative atmosphere. Designers adopt natural method to reproduce the essence of wild nature helped by delicate outdoor furniture. An artificial lake, one of the highlights, enable residents to relax themselves mentally and physically, making this project stand out among other competitors. Five zoning areas under diverse themes interpret perfectly another classic tropical project. SED creates this classical Thai style garden based on the preference of ecology and new humanism with the succinct modern design style to coordinate the landscape with the surrounding design style. In the concept design period, we divide the community into different landscape groups with rich Thai style resort unique landscape, including Pattaya, the so called “Orient Hawaii”; the Phuket, which is called Andaman sea’s pearl; quiet and comfortable Chiengmai; Ko Samui, famous for coconut with exquite and appealing crescent white beach. The first phase landscape is “Pattaya group”, which intends to create the excellent and high quality water feature experienced Thai style resort residence. Leisure, sunshine and natural landscape is created on the basis of Southeast Asia garden. The centre of the garden is pool, overlap water and fountain, and the content of the garden is featured Southeast Asia–style pavement and pavilion; the elements of the garden are Buddhism sculpture, sketches and totem poles embellished with relief sculpture; plantings in the garden are combined with featured theme plants; unique and vivid Southeast Asia garden landscape is built blending with real and unreal varieties. Each small theme community occupies very small area with little green belt. Featured plants Dragon Bay Villa is a residential community located in Wenyu River Villa Area, Shunyi District in northern Beijing. This high-end community exemplifies low density and environmentally friendly living. In the international residential area of Beijing, the project scope includes a 200-metre wide green belt at both southwestern and southeastern sides and 1,800 metres long riverside view along the Wenyu River. Design inspiration is derived from traditional Chinese styles, combined with European and American villa style elements. This diverse design promotes innovation while respecting traditions. There is a 40,000-metresuqare water feature flows through the entire community. Using the common element of water, this single, yet prominent, attribute creates a variety of special landscape nodes. This water feature integrated with a Chinese style of living makes the Dragon Bay Villa an especially unique place. The floor plan of Dragon Bay offers more functional garden space for homeowners and each garden has its own unique appeal. Sunken gardens provide light and ventilation to the basement floors. The gardens are adorned in Chinese traditional elements, such as decorative windows, sculptures, and features. These details convey a concept of value, luxury and nobility. DRAGON BAY VILLA Beijing ECOLAND Planning and Design Corp. The commercial landscape not only coordinates with the whole community, but also serves the Wenyu River Central Villa community. The designer integrates the landscape with retail facilities, using landscape design in function arrangement for this area. For example, the outdoor waterfront decks not only integrated with the landscape and the architectural style, while also providing usable space for visitors. Also, the fountain at the corner similarly serves such a dual purpose, when viewed from the retail interior instills a passive feeling of tranquility, however the exterior experience, music fountain and children’s playing area encourages a playful interaction. These multi-faceted elements create a rich and diverse environment, which has subsequently raised the value of the retail property.
