Water features in the site was divided into the wetlands and the thin water above basement skylight, the concept is not to reproduce the different forms of water features, and not about water activities, but respect the regional culture, life and the relationship between the local natural environments. Wetland and thin water above basement skylight are designed for rain, sewage water collection and as part of water treatment systems. The rainwater harvested, accumulated, and collected in the pond will have the full reclaim by biological degradation through the wetlands treatment, and be used for the green irrigation and supply pond water, do not use drink water as landscape use. 桑基鱼塘,其产生皆源于广府境内河流纵横、地势低洼,潦水容易 为患,人民根据本地自然环境的特点,一则修堤坝制洪水;另则挖洼地为 塘,降低水位,基高塘低,基种作物,塘养鱼虾,形成良性循环的农业生 态环境,创造出特殊的农业生产方式—桑基鱼塘。这种独具珠江三角洲 特色农业景观尤其以广东省内的南海、番禺和顺德居多。 桑基鱼塘的“基”与“塘”构成网状般肌理,无论是高空俯瞰还是身 处其中,都留给人异常深刻的印象。其独具特色的地理环境、地域历史和 地域文化造就了独特的珠三角景观。密布的河网,成片的基塘,繁茂淳郁 的花木,杂糅着低吟浅唱的虫鸟,这是珠三角地区尤其是顺德,在每个人 心中所能唤起的亚热带景观想象。 然而,这些年不争的事实是,农业文明时代的景观地图已然早已被高 速城市化进程所更改。熟识的乡土图景、温润的乡情已逐渐被致密紧凑的 城中村、大而不当的硬质广场和冷漠的邻里关系所替代。经历着本土的农 业文明的文化语境到后工业文明文化语境的转换,独具珠江三角洲农业特 色的桑基鱼塘逐渐变成了关于过往的回忆。 美的(顺德著名的中国家电龙头企业)总部大楼就位于顺德北滘新城 区的住宅区与工业区的包围之中,总部大楼共31层,高128米,是目前顺 德最高的地标建筑。 202 5 3 6 4

Elements Included: • The 8-acre public park provides a public realm and pedestrian passage. The plaza includes a dramatic fountain that can be turned on for major events; when dry, the same plaza accommodates simple daily activities such as Tai Chi or informal conversations and play. • The crescent-shaped retail building defines the park’s east edge and provides restaurants and stores for additional activity and interest. The glass roof and major openings on the building’s multiple levels create strong connections to the landscape. • While the developer and city requested monumental spaces, the landscape architects took care to create smaller scale “gardens within gardens” relating to residential life and providing multiple opportunities for activities and repose. • Water elements strengthen relationships between buildings and landscape. A water wall at the amphitheater visually extends architecture into landscape, while pools at the base of the hotel and other buildings merge structure, landscape, and sky, echoing Chinese traditions of “water flowing” and “water reflecting”. 208 2
• Plant massing defines large and small spaces, while open lawns create active outdoor spaces. Deciduous and evergreen plants mark the changing seasons and rejuvenating qualities of the landscape. Blocks of trees and clipped hedges are contemporary interpretations of the Chinese garden art of extending walls and buildings into the garden. Sustainability BFS introduces sustainable strategies to reduce energy use and redundant infrastructure while maximizing the social urban experience. Landscape elements include the following: • The site plan orients buildings and open spaces to optimize day lighting and natural ventilation. • All parking and services are connected below grade, reducing the surface traffic and promoting a pedestrian-friendly environment. • Landscape materials, from planting to hardscape, are selected from within a 500-mile radius of the site; local artisans played an important role in landscape construction. Plant palette is restricted to indigenous materials. • Zero storm water discharge through use of permeable materials and containment. 209

GUANGZHOU PANYU TIAN'AN ENERGY-SAVING TECHNOPARK Guangzhou, Guangdong Province CSC Landscape Guangzhou Panyu Tian’an Energy-saving Technopark is a national grade privatization technopark. It is a low-plot technopark, covering an area of 50 hectares. And it is a comprehensive science and technology incubator composed of office buildings and science and technology factories. In the 2005 Design Bidding, CSC Landscape won the project and accomplished the construction drawing design of the landscape concept design. Then the landscape designers were delegated to design this project by the client Guangzhou Panyu Energy-saving Technopark Co., Ltd. As a national grade privatization technopark, it should absolutely present the gesture of a technopark in the modern era on the deep surface. The construction of landscape is not only about the shaping itself, but also about the integration with the surrounding environment. The landscape should integrate smoothly and harmoniously into the surrounding architectures. The landscape concept design described the idea from three main aspects: office-biotype, ecology energy-saving type and information sharing type. It created an innovative office environment mode. The green corridor formed by large arbors from the hill to the lake integrate the square with the street, connecting high technological specific buildings built in different periods, which has formed the heaven of pedestrians. There are lively leisure entertainment spaces surrounded by continuous tress. The landscape corridor penetrated the top of the architecture lead the passers-by from various directions to their destinations with ease. The designer integrate the humanity lifestyle and energy conservation into the landscape design, which reject the indifferent industrial elements. Natural, comfortable and humanity modern office environment is finally taken on to form a totally new mode of office environment. The buildings of completed phase one to four adjoin to the massif closely. The abundant green plants grown on the massif provides strong support for the park. It also attributes to the design theme of phase one to four, that is, green forum. The rich green backgrounds, pleasant and concise waterscape as well as the comfortable green space all express the design concept. The garden landscape possesses much broader imagination through the axes and corridors of the mountain, which borrows the nature of the mountain. Background With advantage of location about distance from Beijing city by car in one hour and resource of hot spring, Bazhou has been planed and developed as hot spring town in Hebei Province of China. There are six pieces of land allotted to six investment groups in the new development area and the project is one of six hot spring resorts. Issue & Agenda How to redefine quality for five-star resort hotel which is not mainly by it's physical luxury but more about rich nature experience is the issue the architects have, and how to create resort as one sustainable environment is their main concern. Therefore, environment goes first, then landscape experience, architectural form is just based on how to integrate it with surroundings. Site Situation The site is flat which is about 18 hectares in rectangle shape (12 hectares for the first phase) and as normal northern landscape in China. Cold winter wind comes from northwest direction and cool summer wind comes from southeast direction. Moreover climate and landscape situation is very different at 4 reasons - spring is comfortable, summer is hot which will reach to 32 degree at highest, autumn is cool, and winter is cold about minus 10 degree at lowest. So how to use these varied experience for resort is the one of main points for design. MING-TANG HOT SPRING RESORT Bazhou, Hebei Province C T Design + Associates, LPD Landscape Planning & Design Inc. Concept More Nature, More Sustainable New topography created intends to respond to the site's situation which is to have high hill at north side working as defence for cold winter wind and low hill at south side to guide cool summer wind into the site. Topography also works as base to creates three landscape typologies which will create multiple landscape experience - the hilltop as grassland, the hillside as forest, and the low land as hot spring. Hotel and villas are set at different position and zoning as groups with different landscape themes such as hot spring, forest, and lake. As hot spring resort, water is the main subject and is used as main landscape element. From hot spring to SPA, from dam to waterfall, and from water courtyard to surrounding lake, we intend to create more chance for guest to experience hot spring in many different ways. About water system, secondhand hot spring is collected and pumped into waterfall and water wall in courtyard. Water flows from high level to low level, from inside to outside, from water courtyard to entrance pool and down to lake and river. Finally water is pumped back to water courtyard at the end pool of river as one circulating system. Tianmen Mountain Riverside Restaurant is a new “scenery spot” in Tianmen Mountain in Ziyuan County of Guilin city, which mainly provides visitors with a place for having meals as well as having a rest. The concept is to create unique experience through combine the natural environment with the man-made boundary surface. The architecture echoes with the surrounding environment, including bamboo groves, spruce, danxia landform and the river. The riverside restaurant is a wonderful small project. Its smallness and the simple function help the restaurant to integrate into the surrounding environment as a “translucent” building. The design combines the structure and the realness of the materials as well as the sense of imaginary of the vision and taste. The scenery is not a target of observing, and the architecture is not a shelter. They infiltrate and influence each other in a subtle way. The boundary between architecture and environment becomes very vague. The 627-square-metres interior space contains repast space, kitchen and toilet. The ground floor is elevated above 4.5 meters to respond the change of water levels as well as provide the visitors with a footpath when the water level is low; the riverside single-flight stairs build some transitional space and a place for enjoying the scene of the river outside; on the restaurant’s interior the steel beams between 15 metres to 20 metres support roof and the beams also accommodate several strip-shaped clerestory windows which bring in natural light and view from outside. A series of different shaped shelves made of local fir looks warm and vernacular. The building looks like a super window for overall view. Skylight and side window a mixture of architectural exterior membrane interacting with the nearby bamboo grove, mountain and the materiality of interior space. Once entering the building, one’s perception is surrounded by the combined power of building materiality, natural lighting and adjacent landscape. This new sense is generated by the juxtaposition of the building merging with the natural surroundings. While the rain falling in drops, there was a soft, hushed secondary light around the warm interiority which constructed by fir, and the beautiful scene of river rise gleaming… Everything, the water, the air, sound, material presences, textures… calmed people's hearts. Viewing platform 平面图: 1. 入口 2. 接待处 3. 餐厅 4. 盥洗室 5. 厨房 6. 楼梯 7. 观景台 天门山“山之港”临江餐厅是桂林市资源县天门山风景区的一个最新 “景点”,主要为到此休闲和游览者提供就餐和休息的空间。 餐厅的设计表达了一种与环境积极互动的观念。建筑以某种“半透 明”的方式来呼应场地周边的环境:竹林、杉木、丹霞地貌和江水。 临江餐厅是一个奇妙的小项目,正是空间的小和功能的纯粹,为它以 “半透明”的身份融进周边环境提供了条件。设计出乎意料的把结构与材 料的真实性和视觉与触觉的虚幻感结合在一起。景色,已经不再是被观察 的对象。建筑,已经不再是遮蔽所。它们以某种微妙的方式互相渗透着, 建筑和环境之间的边界变得模糊起来。 建筑室内的面积为627平方米,其中包含了厨房、卫生间和一个完整 的就餐空间。底层架空4.5米是为了应对降水的季节性涨落,并在低水位的 时候给游客提供步行通道;临江的宽大单跑楼梯给人营造出了某种过渡空 间和在室外休息观察江景的场所;长度为15米到20米之间的若干鱼腹梁支 撑起屋顶,顺应了空间跨度的力学需要,并传递了某种微妙的动感。 人们在外部的某些角度观察建筑,通过建筑不同界面虚实关系的组 合,会感受到某种建筑外表面与竹林、山体、室内材料质感的混合,而进 入室内则将体会到某种光线下被建筑材质和风景组合包围的感受,那是借 助建筑界面对外部景色的重新编辑产生的。 每当小雨淅淅沥沥的时候,静静的光线漫反射在温暖的由杉木构成的 室内环境中,江景若隐若现地浮现在人们的眼前,使品茶或就餐者的心慢 慢地安静下来。 240 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 6

ROLLER COASTER Beijing Interval Architects Situated in a tranquil environment of one of the best vocational schools in Beijing, the project aims at providing an iconic image to the institution as well as redefining the use of an existing public space on the central square of the campus. Initially, the client wanted to put on the square a themed sculpture with a monumental effect and scale. A huge pedestal was even already built for the sculpture to put on. However the obvious problem of the square is actually a severe lack of effective public space that would allow students to gather and communicate. What the school really needs is not a monument in the centre of the campus, but a humanistic and functional gathering space for students and an event space for school activities. Therefore, with the intention to create an efficient public space, we proposed a continuous self-folding belt structure that resembles the image of a “roller coaster”. The structure folds three-dimensionally to create a series of spaces such as open gardens, shaded pavilions and exhibition corridors. The entire belt bends around and in-between the existing trees on the site so they are well-preserved and maximally utilised for shading. The roller coaster-like structure presents a highly recognizable identity to the school as well as a fun image that was widely welcomed by the students. 1. Wall screens 2. DASHAWAN BEACH FACILITY Liandao Island, Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province Scenic Architecture Office The site locates on the east seafront of Liandao Island of Lianyungang, an emerging harbor city booming in the middle section of the coastline of China. The beach hosts about 20,000 swimmers everyday in the peak time of summer. We were commissioned to design new facilities for bath service, restaurant & bars, fitness, entertainment and accommodations to meet the needs of increasing crowd. Facing east to the Pacific Ocean, the building lies on the hillside with three Y-shape slabs. The stacking and setback platforms of the slabs distribute pedestrian flows to different levels from the main entry of the beach, while offering splendid views for all floors of the building. The Y-shape provides opportunities for different functional volumes to interact with each other and creates dynamic experience of open spaces on and below the roofs. These hundreds-metre-long slab buildings establish a scale dialogue with both the coastal mountain and wave topography of the ocean, hence to present an ambition of the city to develop and grow.
