Sacred Mountains and Island Palaces

Popular in the 19th century as a stop on the Grand Tour, Lago Maggiore is a
beautiful stretch of water reaching north into Switzerland. Nearby, little Lago
d’Orta holds the bewitching village of Orta San Giulio with its magical island and
laid-back atmosphere. The resort of Stresa, with its grand hotels, is the departure
point for boats to the lavish palaces and gardens of the Borromean Islands. The Val Cannobina

Lombardy’s Glacial Valleys

Many years ago, when Northern Italy’s glaciers retreated to the Alps, they
left behind a series of fertile valleys and pretty lakes backed by rugged hills.
Strategically located cities such as Bergamo and Brescia have a long history
as Roman, medieval and even Venetian strongholds. But there’s evidence of
much older human occupation up in the hills of the Val Camonica, where

88 BACK ROADS NORTHERN AND CENTRAL ITALY

The Hidden Valleys of the Alto Adige

A cheerful “Grüss Gott” rather than “ciao” is the greeting visitors will hear on
this tour through Italy’s South Tyrol. This fascinating borderland, passed back
and forth between ruling powers down the years, is proud of its Germanic
roots. The drive begins in the spa town of Merano – or Meran – and wends
its way through secluded valleys where the traditional Alpine way of life
continues much as it has for centuries: cattle and sheep are led up to high
pasture in summer, cheese is made in huts on the mountainside, and sweet
hay is still cut by hand. After crossing the Monte Giovo/Jaufen pass, the
route drops down to the Isarco (Eisacktal) valley for the Baroque splendours
of the Abbazia di Novacella (Neustift) and the cathedral town of Bressanone.

Classic Dolomites Tour

This itinerary is for those who like heights: it offers switchback roads, chairlift
and cable car rides – and dizzying haute cuisine. A popular skiing and hiking
area, there are exceptional hotels and restaurants in this province, which has
more Michelin stars than any other in Italy. The route crosses the most famous
passes of the Dolomites, a range of limestone mountains raised skywards 250
million years ago when Africa collided with Southern Europe. Bring hiking boots;
it’s worth getting out of the car and walking, not least for a glimpse of history.
Some trails lead along the World War I front line, where Italian and Austrian troops
dug themselves into the mountains to survive. In 1919, after war ended, this La Villa (Stern)
