DAY TRIP OPTIONS
Using Bolzano as a base offers family
day trips exploring an archaeological
museum, enjoying a picnic then
going on a hike to look for dinosaurs
in a gorge, before admiring the
frescoes of dwarves and giants in a
castle. Adults may prefer a wine tour
(including a visit to a wine museum)
through famous wineries of the Alto
Adige, enjoying a gourmet lunch
along the way. For full details, see p103.

1 Bolzano (Bozen)
Alto Adige; 39100
In a valley at the junction of the Talvera and Isarco rivers, Alto Adige’s
main town has changed hands several times over the centuries. In
the Middle Ages it was controlled by the Counts of Tirol, then by the
Bishops of Trento; next it passed to the Habsburgs, then to Bavaria
and Austria. Although it was given to Italy at the end of World War I,
there’s still a real Germanic feel to the town centre.

The Veneto Plain

The great Veneto plain is dotted with some of Italy’s most magnificent cities and
impressive fortified medieval towns, filled with priceless artworks and architecture. These
cultural treasures are further enhanced by their exquisite natural setting among the
rolling Euganean Hills, the lush Riviera del Brenta and the Venetian Lagoon.
Meandering roads lead to rustic-style restaurants, and spa resorts that have been
popular since Roman times. Padua’s world-class art and serene churches and gardens
bustle with youthful excitement, thanks to its student population. The winding Riviera
del Brenta is a natural and architectural delight, famous for its Palladian villas – country
homes for the Venetian nobility. The drive’s conclusion is magical Venice, its Grand Canal
lined with palaces. Although it’s busy with visitors year round, it is simply unmissable.

The Po Delta

The massive River Po winds across its expansive delta in large, lazy
arcs. Somewhat tamed by reclamation, the largest flood plain in
Italy is an easy place to explore. This drive starts at Ferrara and then
wanders through rich agricultural lands, along the massive, protective
river banks to wild wetlands of superb natural beauty with excellent
cycling paths and well-marked walking trails. After the ancient
