295 Chapter 4: A Vibrant Campus New Era UC Member APP Embracing a people-centric philosophy and striving to enhance the well-being of students and staff, NEUC introduced the “New Era Membership Card” in 2021. This innovative initiative aimed to establish a mutually beneficial platform by partnering with reputable businesses across various sectors. This platform extended membership benefits to NEUC students, alumni, faculty, partners, affiliated organisations, and the participating merchants. The primary goal was to assist the partner businesses in expanding their customer base and boosting sales, all while fostering closer ties between NEUC and the corporate world. On 14 September 2023, the official launch of the New Era UC Member APP marked a significant milestone in this endeavour! With the app, members have the convenience of perusing a diverse array of discounts from our affiliated merchants and accessing exclusive benefits without the necessity of a physical membership card. All that is required is to display the membership QR code when making purchases. The app allows current students, alumni, faculty, partners, affiliated organisations, and invited merchants to become New Era members and reap the benefits of this membership. Additionally, businesses interested in partnering with us can use the app to submit their applications, potentially becoming New Era Invited Merchants. This collaborative platform fosters mutual benefits and creates a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Chapter 4: A Vibrant Campus 298 I-Cool Percussion Back in 2014, guided by the late Mr. Yong Kiang Yeow, NEUC, a significant university for higher Chinese language education, committed itself to advancing and sharing traditional high quality cultural activities. As part of this initiative, they established the 24 Seasons Drum Band, known as the I-Cool Percussion. Over time, the I-Cool Percussion has evolved into a thriving tertiary drum band, dedicating its energies to preserve Chinese cultural spirit, and fostering a new generation of determined young drummers. In May 2022, the unfortunate passing of Mr. Yong led to Associate Professor Dr. Tey Shi Bin, who is also the Dean of the Institute of International Education, to assume the responsibility of carrying on Mr. Yong’s legacy. Dr. Tey took the helm of the drum band, acting as its advisor and initiated a training programme while also providing a broader platform for I-Cool Percussion’s performances. This initiative aimed to preserve the cultural treasures that Mr. Yong had bequeathed to NEUC. On 6 December 2023, they will host their first concert to share the outcomes of their efforts. This event serves as an opportunity to resurrect the drums, which had fallen silent due to the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing NEUC’s distinctive sounds to once again resonate for all to enjoy.
