245 Chapter 2: Forwarding Ideals I n the near future, the Institute of Vocational and Continuing Education (IVCE) is poised to introduce bachelor’s degree programmes. Additionally, we have strategic initiatives in place to extend our presence to East Malaysia by establishing branch campuses. Our ambition is to solidify our position as one of the leading universities in the field of Vocational and Continuing Education in Malaysia. This commitment reflects our foundational educational principles of leaving no student behind and granting each learner the opportunity to pursue higher education. In the future, we intend to visit universities in various regions to explore and evaluate universities with potential for advancement and collaboration. Our goal is to establish twinning programmes to broaden our students’ access to higher educational opportunities. We hope that our students, both current and graduates, can acquire 100% of knowledge while in university and apply that 100% of knowledge in their careers. Learning a skill demands time and patience, and we believe persistence leads to success. We encourage our students to become the next generation of vital talents for the nation, seizing opportunities and effectively applying the knowledge they’ve gained in university to create a brighter future. Additionally, we will make efforts to diversify and expand our course offerings, aligning them with international trends and maintaining their relevance. Chapter 2: Forwarding Ideals 246 F or the past 25 years, the Tan Lark Sye Library has steadfastly focused on improving its collection, offering comprehensive services, and fostering strong relationships with its readers. During the initial stages of our university’s formation, passionate advocates of Chinese education generously supported and donated various books, significantly expanding the library’s holdings. The library underwent two relocations, each of which engaged faculty, staff, and students in a collaborative effort to successfully transfer books from the previous location to the current premise. This history of collective endeavour has become a cherished shared memory for both faculty and students. Over the years, our library has progressively introduced multiple special collections with the aim of preserving documents and historical materials while also attracting domestic and international researchers to use them. These special collections have evolved into essential resources that provide substantial support for research and scholarly exchanges. As a repository of human wisdom and culture, we are dedicated to ensuring equal learning and reading opportunities for all our readers, regardless of their backgrounds, capabilities, or interests. Our aspiration is to cater to our readers’ requirements and furnish them with expert services and assistance, thereby becoming their trusted learning companions. The library is not merely a repository of books but rather an organic, evolving entity and a dynamic platform for ideas. However, our goal is to strengthen the connections between the library, staff, and students by coordinating collaborative events with other departments, facilitating interdisciplinary learning and exchanges. We hope to attract more visitors to the library through engagements with readers and outreach activities where we can share knowledge and ideas. This can help to create an atmosphere of vibrant creativity. The library aspires to be a vibrant space where wisdom and innovation thrive. As technology continues to advance, and online reading and electronic resources become increasingly prevalent, our library also strives to provide more relevant resources to meet the evolving needs of our readers. Despite the growing preference for digital reading, we remain committed to rekindling readers’ interest in physical books. We encourage them to step into the library, pick up substantial volumes, feel the tactile quality of paper, savour the gentle act of flipping pages, and immerse themselves in the rich aroma of books. In the words of Shakespeare, “Books are the nourishment of the world; without books, it’s as though there’s no sunshine, and the wisdom found in books is like wings on a bird.” An ideal library should be a place that keeps up with the times. We aspire to stay aligned with the trends of the era, consistently enhancing our services and facilities. Our goal is to provide a comfortable reading environment that fulfils the needs of our readers. We aim to be dedicated advocates for promoting reading and encouraging lifelong learning, growing together with our readers. Acting Chief Librarian of Tan Lark Sye Library, Angeline Tai Ting Ting

As the academic building was completed, we ventured forth on separate trails, much like flowers and fruits, carried by winds, waters, or creatures, weaving into diverse tapestries of life. With each return dwindling, leaving only memories and aspirations, still and independent. After 25 years or a quarter of a century, in the era of nurturing for a century, we are still youthful, still brimming with possibilities. Though my youth was just that one time, whether marked by significant or insignificant actions, in the perpetual evaporation of the years, the essence of spring persists. Chapter 2: Forwarding Ideals 258 T he story always starts with a journey. You are carrying an ambitious dream, following your elder’s footstep, sailing to the southern islands, shaping a diligent mind over the days within the lofty rubber trees. As you strolled through the rubber forest, the vast morning mist and the line of rubber trees failed to hinder your gaze towards the distant horizon, where you witnessed the gradual illumination of the sky. The rubber forest taught you more than just the growth of plants. Within the sturdy tree trunks, you observed unwavering resilience, and amid the permeating scent of rubber, you discerned the vast marketplace. Perhaps, a vision had incubated in your mind during the days strolling in the rubber forest. You wish to provide the opportunity for the Chinese in the south seas to embrace their mother tongue and to engrave the history of their people with the pen instead of the rubber knife. Nanyang University has become your dream. It has long been a dream for the Chinese community. The barber’s scissors danced like butterflies, the trishaw worker sped along the wind, and the graceful dancer glided into the neon lights like a swallow. Each of them was a cultivator of Nanyang University as the winds of change swept through. The birds sang in its honour, and the flora flourished. They all bore witness to the blossoming of Chinese education in the south. As the soft glow of dawn gently embraces the land, Nanyang University was born at the equator. You stand strong Hiu Kai Wen Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Chinese Language and Literature E verything near will eventually become distant. This movie caught my eye at a screening in Beijing. In that dim moment, memories of watching “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” in the classrooms of NEUC flashed back. The faces of my peers and lecturers were covered in darkness, with only the expansive, glimmering light on the screen. Yes, everything close will eventually fade away, and I will forget the time I spent here. However, there is something that will stay forever. NEUC has fostered my passion for literature, initiated my aspirations for academia while shaping the person I am today. Thanks NEUC, for brightening up my future. Wishing NEUC 25th Happy Anniversary! The Indomitable Figure: A Tribute to Tan Lark Sye, the Father of Nanyang University

259 Chapter 2: Forwarding Ideals in the Yunnan Garden, unravelling a new chapter in history with the robust voice: “We are sowing the cultural seed in this land, where our culture shall shine alongside the sun and the moon, in harmony with the earth.” Sudden storms and darkness approached, as the lion at the southern isle could not tolerate any discord. “Sir, you are not our citizen”. You cherished this land deeply, but sadly, you were banished by the government. Nanyang University, under the lion’s watchful eye, walked into the shadows of history. It became a flag on the coffin. Like your offspring, gently soothing you, accompanying you back to the other shore. Mysteries envelop the path of spiritual conversion, but your enduring spirit remains known. Once, your unwavering presence graced the Yunnan Garden, weathering the tempests of history. Even now, you linger by the perennial trees on the hill, gently overseeing the students’ passage with an ageless vigil. New Era, a youthful university, yet harbours the ancient dreams of Nanyang University and Merdeka University, echoing the unfinished aspirations of the Nanyang people. It marks a fresh chapter in the annals of Chinese education. New Era, the chapters built with the characters will persist and strengthen in the tropical storms, rooting themselves and venturing into the world. They have transformed into unyielding calls articulated in the mother tongue. And you shall forever bear witness. Professor Dr. Mok Soon Chong, Vice-Chancellor of NEUC, remarked that the establishment of NEUC is the legacy of Nanyang University and Merdeka University. NEUC is the “son of Nanyang University”, and valued the spirit of Nanyang University as her spiritual heritage. May NEUC continue its path towards an even brighter future! Chin Yee Ling Diploma in Early Childhood Education I am Li Dejiang, an international student from Shenzhen, China. In 2018, I made the decision to enrol in the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) programme at NEUC. My aspiration to study abroad had initially led me to consider European and American countries. But I chose Malaysia due to its affordability and shorter distance from home. Among the various colleges in Malaysia, NEUC stood out to me because of the recommendations from my family and the collaboration NEUC had with my high school. Additionally, my aunt is also the head of the international department, she encouraged me to explore the educational opportunities in Malaysia. NEUC provided on-campus dormitories that were conveniently situated near the classrooms, effectively addressing the accommodation needs of international students. During the challenging times of the pandemic, the college ensured the well-being and safety of international students who were unable to return home. The IIE played a crucial role in overseeing international affairs, offering unwavering support and guidance. The faculty not only addressed our concerns promptly but also went above and beyond to make us feel cherished on special occasions. Graduating in 2021, I found myself two years ahead of my peers in mainland China, providing me with valuable time to adapt to the professional world’s demands. Li Dejiang Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Business Administration

261 Chapter 2: Forwarding Ideals Despite the challenges in Malaysia, the Chinese community has tirelessly safeguarded Chinese language education, exemplifying the importance of preserving our cultural roots. NEUC’s relentless dedication as a private university for the Chinese community is truly commendable. The name “New Era” serves as a constant reminder for me to remain connected to my cultural heritage, and the nurturing I received from my alma mater will forever be cherished. Ngeow Chong Wei Diploma in Information Technology My journey at NEUC began with a firm resolve to pursue my passion for the Chinese language. While the campus may not boast lavish features, the dedication of the lecturers in nurturing students is evident. Instead of focusing on ornate campus decorations, the faculty invest their time and resources into organizing projects and events, providing students with many opportunities to showcase their talents. Beyond seeking an external grand environment, I sought to find mentors within the university. From the foundation to the degree programmes, my learning journey never ceased. Despite stumbling along the way, I found supportive lecturers and like-minded friends who accompanied me. My time here has taught me a valuable lesson, that it is not about taking pride in NEUC, but about letting NEUC take pride in its students. Tan Yi Jing Diploma in Graphic Design What I value most about NEUC is its open-mindedness and willingness to consider different viewpoints. Compared to my previous school, NEUC demonstrated a greater capacity for reason and empathy. Prior to resolving any issue, NEUC encourages all parties involved to express their perspectives and opinions in a rational and respectful manner. Through effective communication, discussions are conducted amicably, resulting in satisfactory resolutions. This demonstrates NEUC’s commitment to fostering a harmonious and inclusive environment for all. NEUC’s significant event during the pandemic was its live broadcast discussions. Rather than making decisions unilaterally, NEUC chose to engage in dialogue with the students. Having participated in the discussion as a representative, I understood the challenges NEUC faced during the pandemic. Their professional response to address student concerns and to assist them in overcoming difficulties garnered my admiration for NEUC. The remarkable performance and positive changes brought about by the administration of NEUC have left a lasting impact on us. We are genuinely grateful for the experiences we have had at NEUC. After the live broadcast, a message from a student at another school caught my attention, expressing a wish for their school to emulate some of the positive attributes of New Era. It reflects the privilege we, as students, have in being part of the New Era community. Chapter 2: Forwarding Ideals 268 NEUC is like a castle that encourages you to be adventurous. “Running wild” might seem uncontrolled, but here, it represents courage. Yes, I have often felt timid despite my desire to take risks. It was not until I arrived here that I regained my courage. Upon entering the Department of Media Studies, I encountered various bridges, each amplifying my inner thoughts. Within the castle, students are urged to explore different things and test their limits. Whether one desires to lead an event with the guidance of lecturers or wishes to step into the limelight, if the courage to ask is present, the opportunities are readily provided. I never cease to explore various roles within the department. Though exhausting, it has left me fulfilled. I believe that playing different roles in different activities enabled me to unearth my strengths and clarify my path. I am thankful for the guiding lecturers who allowed me to venture into diverse tasks, and for the understanding and support of my friends. They have been with me through challenges, leading me toward a promising future. Ng Yi Xuan Diploma in Media Studies NEUC’s Chinese Language and Literature Department has reshaped my perception of the subject, revealing various new aspects. “Chinese” is not merely a set of characters; it embodies aspects such as humanities, history, geography, psychology, literature, and culture. My educational journey has not been confined to textbooks; it has broadened my horizons. Through research and discussions with classmates, I have acquired skills in data collection, critical thinking, analysis, and interpersonal communication. Most importantly, the department feels like a big family, where students from diverse regions work together toward common goals, supporting and cherishing each other. Wong Min Min Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Chinese Language and Literature I strongly agree with a statement from a famous Marvel’s Avenger, Spider Man, who quoted that “With great power comes great responsibility”. As we transition into adulthood, our behaviour and demeanour naturally mature as well. We learn to think and to speak like responsible adults through learning. During my time in NEUC, lecturers constantly emphasised the importance of self-learning, independent thinking, and problem-solving. Although we were encouraged to learn independently, our lecturers were always there to offer guidance, making our learning journey more efficient. NEUC has provided us with numerous platforms and learning opportunities. I am proud to be part of the NEUCian. As members of NEUC, let us unite and work together to make our campus a better place. 273 Chapter 3: Leaping to New Heights Future During the bygone days, a container box represented a period of rigorous collective learning, a memory deeply etched in the founding history of our school. These tin-clad containers housed 148 alumni during their learning journey. The space was simple, the airflow limited, and foreheads often adorned with beads of sweat. This was not folklore or legend; it was reality of our campus's early history. Fast forward to today, the newly established classrooms stand in neat rows, well-equipped with modern amenities. In front, projectors, textbooks, and teaching materials come to life, replacing the physical discomfort of the past with a newfound enthusiasm for learning. Past Container Classrooms New Classrooms Present You can now envision an even loftier and more expansive future; extend your gaze beyond the horizon and persist in reaching the pinnacle of knowledge. The upcoming Nantah Building is slated to house the Nanyang University Resource Centre, two stepped classrooms with 300 seats each, eight floors of classrooms, and three badminton courts. The innovative design of the Nantah Building layout, shaped in appreciation of the past, was crafted by the Knowspace Art & Interior Workshop, a group of alumni from the Faculty of Arts and Design. As we bid farewell to the existing multi-purpose court, we eagerly anticipate the grand unveiling of the Nantah Building, knowing that the indomitable spirit of Nanyang University will persistently guide us forward. Present Multipurpose Court Nantah Building F rom the past to the present, during the 25 years of New Era’s growth, we have witnessed the process of continuous development and transformation. From the initial dream to today’s reality, we have continuously optimized our facilities to provide staff and students with a well-equipped and excellent learning environment. This process is like turning from a chrysalis into a butterfly, a journey of persistence and progress. Section I Past and Present, Transformation and Empowerment

Within these walls, you have encountered joy, surprise, tears, personal growth, and bittersweet farewells. The auditorium has been a silent, steadfast companion, discreetly bearing witness to every chapter of your life. Now it boasts a fresh transformation, adorned with an LED screen and a grand piano generously donated by kind-hearted individuals. The years spent on its stage, the highs and lows behind the curtains, the bustling inauguration ceremonies, emotional graduations, vibrant student performances, and spirited school celebrations, each word uttered into the microphone and every melody resonating within the auditorium carry the most harmonious cadences of youth. May you be embraced by blessings, applause, and lasting friendships within these newly adorned walls. As you step into the new auditorium, you may also discover a more splendid version of yourself. Later in life, she graciously contributed her wealth to NEUC, facilitating the transformation of the once modest UG Hall. What was once a simple space has now been equipped with screens, state-of-the-art technology, and a piano. It is here that students attend classes, sit for exams, and organise a myriad of activities. 275 Chapter 3: Leaping to New Heights D iversity is the mother of innovation, and we persist on the position of mother-tongue education. To cultivate outstanding talents who are both academically and technically proficient, we continue to create new departments and expand diversified academic and vocational fields, so to establish ourselves in the new era with innovative majors that meet the needs of the times while maintaining our global view. Section II Diversity and Openness, Innovations and Opportunities The emblem of the Institute of International Education is akin to a bouquet of blooming flowers and a vibrant bird in flight. It was created by fusing the Chinese character “飛” (meaning “to fly”) with the letters “I” and “E” from “International Education.” The emblem is adorned with pink to signify innovation and progress, and blue to symbolise the Chinese idiom “ 飲水思源” (meaning “to always have gratitude”) . Students from NEUC soar outwards, and foreign students arrive for continuous cross-cultural exchanges. The Institute of International Education is equipped with various departments, including the International Academic Exchange Office, International Student Recruitment Office, Department of International Professional Development, Language and Intercultural Centre, and the International Student Service Centre. These divisions, led by Associate Professor Dr. Tey Shi Bin, the founding dean of the Institute, serve as the primary point of contact for the Institute’s international exchanges as it also manages all international student-related affairs. Institute of International Education Resembling an aerial view of a summit and reflecting the relentless quest for excellence, the Graduate School’s emblem is a fusion of two green elements – an intellectual light green and a darker green triangle. Together, they form the symbolic letter N, a visual connection to the emblem of NEUC. The Graduate School proudly offers the sole Master’s Degree programme in ASEAN Studies (curretly known as Southeast Asia Studies) in Malaysia alongside distinctive Master’s Degree programmes in majors such as Chinese Studies, Education, and Business Administration. Functioning as a hub for academic research and instruction, the Graduate School places a strong emphasis on the synergy between teaching and research, cultivating the next generation of exceptional local scholars. Chapter 3: Leaping to New Heights 276 The Faculty of Health, Safety, Security, and Environment was officially established in 2021 and was driven by the vision of its founding Dean, Associate Professor Azizan. It was created to offer programmes including the Bachelor of Law Enforcement (Honours) and Bachelor of Healthcare Management at the Old Klang Road campus. Associate Professor Azizan remains committed to advancing an interdisciplinary education for NEUC. His mission involves disseminating knowledge in areas such as public health and environmental management, urging the community to take active steps in preserving the environment and contributing to the creation of a more sustainable and environmentally conscious society. Faculty of Health, Safety, Security and Environment Under the educational principles championed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mok Soon Chong who emphasises “In education, no one should be left behind”, the Institute of Vocational and Continuing Education has shown remarkable growth in recent years. It has emerged as the first comprehensive vocational and continuing education university in Malaysia supported by a university college. The Institute boasts 6 departments and offers 35 specialised courses, including programmes such as Smart Industrial and Hospitality, Innovation and Technology, Creative Media and Beauty Studies, Enterprise Development and Professional Training, Industrial Engineering, and PTM Automotive Technology and Transportation Engineering. Grounded in the concept of industry-academia collaboration and technological proficiency, the institute provides students with pre-employment training, post-employment certification, and apprenticeship scholarship programmes. Additionally, the institute offers a diverse curriculum aligned with global trends, nurturing highly skilled technologists to serve the needs of domestic small and medium-sized enterprises. 277 Chapter 3: Leaping to New Heights The Tan Lark Sye Library, named in honour of the founder of Nanyang University, boasts an impressive collection exceeding 250,000 books, making it the most extensive compilation of Chinese collections in Southeast Asia. However, the distinctiveness of the Tan Lark Sye Library extends to its diverse special collections. In addition to existing treasures such as the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries (Siku Quanshu), the Nantah Resource Centre, the Fang Xiu Collection, and the Lee Yip Lim Collection, the library has seen the inclusion of three more significant private special collections between 2018 and 2023: the Lee Kim Chong Historical Collection of Malaysian Chinese Literature, the Yong Ching Fatt Collection, and the Tay Lian Soo Collection. These bibliophiles are not only distinguished scholars but also literary creators. Their motivations for amassing books stem from their personal academic interests and their contributions to scholarly research and the dissemination of knowledge. These collections are veritable repositories of knowledge and cultural heritage, embodying the spirit of generosity that transcends the private realm to serve the public good. They epitomise the concept of selflessness and infuse NEUC with a rich academic atmosphere, inspiring all who hold culture dear and value the sharing of knowledge. Private collections of experts and scholars Much like a distinctive emblem on a horse that makes it easily identifiable, a recognizable brand sets a university apart and ensures it will grab people’s attention, even amidst a crowd of tertiary institutions. In pursuit of becoming an “industry-academia-research university in the new century,” NEUC has instituted a dedicated Branding and Creativ e Department. While steadfastly upholding academic excellence, we have opened our gate to foster collaborative partnerships with the business world, facilitating a strong connection between students and society. Through branding, we aim to solidify our position, to maintain a firm foothold, to unleash our creative potential, to reach the pinnacle of success, and to empower everyone to fly high with support from this remarkable university. Chapter 4: A Vibrant Campus 280 The original campus song collection entitled “Flying High” represents a pioneering effort within the Malaysian Chinese music scene, marking it as the very first album consisting of original campus music to be entirely sponsored by a university. This groundbreaking album was collaboratively created by Liz Tung Lai See, Percy Phang, and Tey Shi Bin and was officially released on 8 October 2019, featuring a total of 11 distinct tracks. The entire album’s songwriting, vocals, music video production, choreography, and design were a collaborative endeavour, with contributions from dedicated NEUC alumni and current students. In September 2022, the “Flying High” team established both a planning committee and a working committee. They orchestrated a range of activities, which included lyrical challenges, internal training, surprise campus gatherings, on-campus and off-campus performances, and visits to local high schools. The singers of “Flying High” team graced high school campuses and university graduation ceremonies with their performances, infusing campuses with the vibrancy and exuberance of youth. The upcoming release, “Flying High 2.0 - Masterpiece of Youth” featuring a compilation of original campus songs, will coincide with NEUC’s 25th Anniversary Celebration on 19 November 2023. Chapter 4: A Vibrant Campus 286 The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has affected our country. Numerous recent graduates not only missed the vibrant campus experience but were also unable to take part in traditional graduation ceremonies, making it feel as though they were thrust into the workforce abruptly, forced to transition into adulthood prematurely. To ensure that students’ final memories of their university experience are focused on celebratory moments rather than the impact of the pandemic, NEUC rallied its staff from various departments and faculties to orchestrate and plan the “Grad Fiesta: Cheers to Adulthood”. This event aimed to help graduates rediscover the lost moments of campus life. NEUC regards graduation as both an ending and a new beginning. Through this celebration, they aspire to preserve the graduates’ youthful memories while instilling them with courage and best wishes for their future endeavours. NEUC also hopes that the "Cheers to Adulthood" graduates will forever cherish the brilliant night at their alma mater after they depart, and they are also welcome to return at any time. With the pandemic behind us and students back on campus, the overwhelmingly positive feedback from students has established the Grad Fiesta as an eagerly anticipated annual tradition for graduates.
