UNI-SAFE has been developed by the German Chemical Industry in close
cooperation with fire brigade specialists and it is designed to effectively
absorb all liquid chemicals. The composition of UNI-SAFE does not allow any
dangerous reactions, even with strongly reacting and oxidizing substances
such as nitric acid, oleum, bromine, sulphuric acid, or hydrogen peroxide.
For example, when nitric acid is bound by UNI-SAFE there is no formation of
nitrous gases when using a copper splinter. The main component of UNI-SAFE
is a polymer with an extremely high absorbency rate. Therefore UNI-SAFE is
able to bind liquids with a volume of up to 75 times its net weight. 2 g of UNI-
SAFE can absorb 150ml of water.

While UNI-SAFE physically absorbs non-aqueous substances through its
capillary action, aqueous substances are bound in a chemical-physical process.

4 QTC PILLS

Quantum tunnelling composite is a flexible polymer that exhibits extraordinary
electrical properties. In its normal state it is a perfect insulator, but when
compressed it becomes a near-perfect conductor and able to pass very high
currents. Polymers loaded with carbon are, at best, only partially conductive.
In QTC, the change from non-conductor to conductor is dramatic, and a tiny
piece measuring 4mm square and 1.5mm thick can pass a current of up to
10 amps when squeezed!

Instead of carbon, QTC contains tiny metal particles, but it does NOT work by 5 POLYMORPH 6 M ODIFIED
percolation. Instead, electrons ‘pass’ through the insulation by a process called POLYCAPROLACTONE (PCL)
quantum tunnelling - hence the name of the material. To explain this effect, (COOLMORPH)
we have to appeal to quantum theory and think of the electrons as waves. In
classical physics, the electrons cannot pass through an insulation barrier, but
according to quantum theory a wave can - and this is what happens in QTC.
QTC pills offer a striking resistance change when deformed by squeezing,
pulling or twisting. In practice, QTC can be connected in quite simple ways to
create anything from switches to force sensors.

Hard, tough mouldable plastic material which melts at just 42 °C.

This is a modified variant of polycaprolactone (Polymorph), which has been
modified to reduce the melting point from 60 °C to 42 °C. It can be shaped by
hand after only a few minutes in hot water, and can be reheated and reshaped
over and over again. The lowered melting point means the soft plastic can be
handled with little risk of burning hands or fingers. This also allows more time
to shape the material before it solidifies.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) is an industrial polymer used for applications such as
hot-melt glue and laminating pouches. It is non-toxic, biodegradable and can
be coloured with dry colour pigments. This low melting point variant is used for
sculpting, model making, and prototyping. Supplied in a bag of 1 kg.

(‘Silly putty’ or ‘Bouncy putty’) Known as visco-elastic polymer or dilatent (Polyethylene oxide) In a non-toxic, long-chain polymer with a high molar
compound. This class of material has the remarkable property that it usually mass. Because of extensive hydrogen bonding, it is soluble in water. A solution
behaves as a soft mouldable plastic (like chewing gum), but instantly becomes of Polyox (approximately 1% w/v) behaves as an ‘elastic liquid’ i.e. it ‘self-

small piece - typically less than 1mm thick and 6mm square - is placed above
a minimum of four square or circular magnets whose poles are arranged
to give an alternate N/S pole configuration. A matrix of magnets can be

This ‘different dyes for different fibres’ educational resource kit provides
everything needed (apart from a kettle of hot water) for an easy demonstration
of the dyeing process that highlights the difference between fibres. It provides
an excellent introduction to some of the ways in which our clothes are coloured
and also introduces pupils to the existence of a range of fibres.

The demonstration provides dramatic results in a few simple steps. Three
coloured dye solutions (red, yellow and blue) are supplied. Mixed together they
form a murky brown solution and the magic occurs when the SDC multi-fibre
strip is added. The multi-fibre strip is a specially woven fabric that contains six
different fibre types. The three dyes become fixed to different fibres and the

4 THERMOCHROMIC SMART CORD

T his temperature reactive extruded polythene cord (mono filament) contains a
thermochromic pigment which changes colour at 31°C – from red to pale pink.
Normally, when a mono filament is extruded (like a nylon fishing line) the cord
is mechanically stretched to align the molecules along the length of the cord.
This provides the strength, i.e., when the cord is stretched, it thins down but gets
stronger. This smart cord is un-stretched and when pulled the molecules realign
and the cord becomes stronger (this has to be done quite slowly). Also, when
you stretch the cord, the realignment of molecules generates heat and the cord

Non-toxic liquid paraffin containing a UV sensitive photochromic dye. Indoors
it appears as a clear liquid but when exposed to natural light it immediately
becomes coloured. This colour increases in intensity when exposed to direct
sunlight. The colour change is reversible, although it takes about 60 seconds
for the liquid to become clear again.

Makes a fantastic demonstration of photochromic phenomena. The same
dye chemistry is used in photochromic lenses, special window glass etc.
Photochromic cells, for quantitative measurements, can be made, by trapping a

6 SDC MULTI FIBRE DW FABRIC A selection of pigments that change from pale to stronger colours in the
presence of UV light. The pigments take the form of a thick cream. The active
photochromic dye is contained in micron-size microcapsules dispersed in water
to make up the pigment ‘cream’. It is especially sensitive to UV light which
produces an almost instant colour change. The pigment then takes several
minutes to decay back to its original pale colour. When mixed with a binder
(e.g. acrylic base SM76260 or acrylic paint), the pigment can be permanently
applied to almost any surface. The more dilute the pigment, the less dramatic
the colour change; the mixing proportions are therefore a matter of trial

This coating ‘paint’, which is based on carbon materials, heats up when
voltage is applied. 12-24V DC is recommended, but it also works at higher
voltages. The coating can be applied by brush, roller, or sprayer on to surfaces
of any shape. The surface can be painted when dry. The coating also works on
textiles.

Commercial applications could include: use instead of conventional thin film
heating elements in car mirrors, frost protection of plane wings, floor and wall
heating, and heating of food.

There are variants for temperatures ranging from 100°C to 300°C. One
advantage of this coating compared with conventional resistor heating
elements is that it distributes heat more evenly. The electrical connections to the
coating can be done with conventional copper tape. One litre covers 4 m2 - a

is approximately 20°C, which means its magnetic properties can be readily
investigated at temperatures easily obtained in the classroom.

as embedded particles in a polythene extrusion, which also contains a
thermochromic dye as a useful visual marker of the transition point. If the
(normally red) cord is floated on cold water it will be attracted to a small
neodymium magnet. If floated on hot water the cord loses its colour and is
no longer susceptible to magnetic attraction - i.e. when the cord is red the
embedded gadolinium is ferromagnetic and when colourless paramagnetic.

Smart Sand is amazing sand which will not get wet. Pour it into a beaker or
bowl of water and it will create strange shapes within the water. Remove it
again with a spoon and the sand will be as dry as it was when it went in! Pour
