1 L ASER 3 M ULTIFUNCTION LASER

This laser emits light with a wavelength of 632.8nm. The emitted light is
coherent, i.e. wave fronts propagate in the same phase over a large distance
compared with ordinary light sources. The emitted light is highly directional and
the beam diameter at the laser is about 0.5mm increasing very gradually at
increasing distances from the laser. The light emitted is not uniformly polarised
but changes its polarisation at random around the direction of propagation.
Light from the laser is well suited to demonstrations of optical interference. If a
line grating is placed in the laser beam, the interference pattern will be clearly
visible on a projection screen. The laser is provided with a BNC-connector
for option of modulating of the beam using a signal generator, CD-player or
similar signal source. The light beam intensity will then vary with the applied
signal. Well suited for demonstration of optical communication using a
photodetector.

The apparatus is designed to measure the wavelength of light by studying the
interference pattern from a double slit. The equipment is well suited for student
lab exercises. The device contains a 12 V festoon lamp with a holder for colour
filters and a millimetre scale with moveable markers.

The light is viewed at a distance of about 3 metres through a double slit. The
viewer directs a co-worker to adjust the markers so that the distance between
them corresponds to 10 interference maxima. Afterwards the precise distances
can be measured and the wavelength of the light can be calculated.

source for optics experiments, such as first to third order colour fringes using

This apparatus is designed to determine the approximate value of Planck’s
constant, using a range of LEDs of known wavelength, to allow the electron/
photon energy to be calculated. There are 7 LEDs, covering the light range
from deep blue at 470 nm to near IR at 940 nm, mounted on a box with 4 mm
sockets for attachment to a voltmeter and ammeter for voltage and current
measurements. By monitoring the voltage at which each LED just begins to emit
light, a graph of energy input as a function of light emitted frequency can be
plotted and an approximate value of Planck’s constant can be deduced.

The knee voltage in the characteristic curve of a light emitting diode (LED) is
closely related to the energy of the emitted photons. By graphing knee voltages
for a range of LEDs as a function of the frequency of the emitted light, a linear
relationship is established.

The LEDs used emit UV (ultraviolet), NIR (near infrared) and three wavelengths
in the visible region. The LEDs have been carefully selected to emit light within

SPEED OF LIGHT

synchronisation pulse to the oscilloscope where the transmitted and received

2 T UNGSTEN, HIGH DENSITY METAL

Tungsten metal (aka wolfram) has a very high density, 19.25 g/cm3, which is
comparable to that of uranium and gold. It has a melting point of 3422 °C,
which is the highest of all the non-alloyed metals.

4 M ATERIALS SET, SOLIDS Tungsten is used in incandescent lightbulb filaments, where it emits bright light
when heated to very high temperatures. It is also used in the form of tungsten
carbide (compound with carbon) for wear-resistant abrasives and cutting tools.
Tungsten is an effective radiation shielding material; it’s used in the nuclear
industry as a non-toxic replacement for lead. Tungsten and gold have almost
the same density and tungsten is used as a core material in counterfeit gold
bars.

It is impractical to cast tungsten because of its high melting point. Instead,
powdered tungsten is pressed to shape and sintered at a temperature much
lower than its melting point.

The Material Hardness Tester is a simple but effective apparatus for measuring
the hardness of a variety of solid materials. The apparatus consists of a rig,
an anvil, a punch, a delivery tube (short), a drop tube (long), a weight and
a pin. A material sample for testing is placed on a metal anvil at the base of
the rig. A metal punch is then gently rested point down on the sample and
a weight is dropped down the drop tube, from a set height, onto the punch,
thereby creating an impact cone in the test material. Different materials can be
tested and compared for hardness by measuring the width of the impact cones
created. The height can be adjusted via pre-drilled holes in the main tube.
Supplied with pre-cut samples of copper, brass, aluminium and Perspex for
testing. Replacement samples are also available separately.

This simple apparatus nicely demonstrates Newton’s rings. It consists of a
slightly convex lens, mounted against a flat glass plate. Interference fringes,
known as Newton’s rings, can be observed as a series of light and dark
concentric circles around a central dark spot where the lens and glass plate
meet. This phenomenon is usually observed using a monochromatic light
source such as a sodium lamp. The pressure on the glass can be varied by
using the fitted screws. Glass Dimensions (Dia.): 60mm.

This apparatus is ideal for all resonance investigations in air columns
particularly the Salters MUS Activity 9. The main tube takes a high power
sound wave generator unit plugged in to one end. The generator is driven
by a standard laboratory signal generator and as the frequency is adjusted

A really useful feature for those less familiar with using signal generators is
that for basic use, you just operate two buttons: One for frequency and one
