Comprehensive details of the activity and learning outcomes:
Under the second collaborative project of the British Council ISA titled “On the Palanquin of
Poetry”, the students of DPS Jodhpur studied poems of peace poets, Dr Daisaku Ikeda from
Japan, K Satchidanandan from India and Kholoud Al Mulla from the UAE. The activities took
place in the months of September-October and the classes involved were V to XII.
Students of the Middle Block enthusiastically participated in the four-day-long event which was
completely dedicated to the peace poets. ‘Video Lessons on Peace Poets’, ‘Collage Making’, ‘Self
Composed Poems’, ‘Inter Class Recitation Competition’ and ‘Power Point Presentation’ were the
main attractions of the event. Dr Daisaku Ikeda, K Satchidanandan and Kholoud Al Mulla were
the three poets of peace who were honoured in Dubai.
The initiation of the activities involved ‘Video Lessons on Peace Poets’ for classes VI to VIII. The
aim of these lessons was to sensitize the students on the burning issue of terrorism and how to
promote peace against terrorism. The lessons were designed differently for all three grades.
They were taken up through the medium of poem, PPT, class discussion and peace symbols, in
the classes. The three famous peace poets were taught and discussed at length. The poets have
explored different themes of peace through their peace poems; describing inner calm, making
peace between nations and among friends. Teachers took up for their video lessons, the famous
poems written by these poets of peace. Comparative analysis of the theme, tone, expression and
writing style of the poems was done. A simple question answer technique to check the previous
knowledge of the students on the birthplace, education in school and college, their inspiration
to write poetry, notable works, awards and achievements was followed. Poems such as ‘After
the War’, ‘Joy of Life’, ‘Why did we fight at all?’, ‘Fighting for Peace’, ‘Mother’, ‘Stammer’ were
discussed during the video lessons. The lessons concluded with biographical sketches of the
three poets. Students were able to compare and analyse the difference in the mood and the
expression of the poems. They learnt to respect others’ opinions and realised the importance of
peace for the good of humanity and for human survival too.
The second day of the event included ‘Collage Making’ for class IV and V and ‘Self Composed
Poem’ for class VII. The teachers introduced the ‘Collage Making’ activity in classes IV and V by
discussing the peace poets: K. Satchidanandan, Daisaku Ikeda and Kholoud Al Mulla. The young
minds were really excited about it. Each poet was discussed, giving details about the life, career,
awards and books written. Their pictures and poems like: ‘Stammer’ and ‘The Joys of Life’ were
displayed on the smart board, so that they could comprehend well about these poets. The

students formed groups and worked in teams to display their knowledge about the peace poets
discussed. They noted down the names of the poets and divided the work among them. Each
one brought the information about the poets and while doing so they learnt and discussed a lot
about them. They learnt about the places where these poets live and were glad to know about
K. Satchidanandan. When the poets were discussed, the children carefully listened. The students
looked forward to the activity and brought the material required for the collage making activity.
The euphoria could be seen all around as they completed their tasks in the given time. The
children had vivid ideas, which they displayed on the charts and were keenly engrossed in their
work so that they could finish it first. Students were feeling proud about the work done by them
and at the same time were appreciative of the work done by the other groups. One could see the
objective of the activity being accomplished, as it displayed teamwork, information gathering,
sharing and depiction. The activity was well conducted. The collages were displayed on the
display boards and they were greatly appreciated by everyone.
Class VII students were involved in ‘Self Composed Poems on Peace’ activity. They researched
extensively about the three international peace poets and tried to put in their best in this
activity. Using their creativity and seeking information from the poetic works of the three poets,
students tried to bring life into their feelings in the form of self- composed poems. Students of
each section wrote poems on various themes such as – peace, unity, happiness and brotherhood.
Through their poems, they tried to convey the message of peace and solidarity. The best three
poetic works from each section were selected and displayed for the other students to get
inspired. Students went through the poems of the three peace poets and tried to understand the
reasons why these poems were written. They studied the life history of these poets and tried to
know about the circumstances that prevailed and led to the making of these poets. Through the
students’ poetic works, they wished to spread a message to establish peace and say no to wars
and disputes. This activity was conducted to give students an insight into the lives of these great
poets and understand the power of thoughts and words that can definitely bring a big change
around us.
‘Inter Class Recitation Competition’ was held on the third day of the event. The purpose served
through this activity was to generate awareness among the students for award winning peace
poets who dedicated their works to set peace with the help of pen instead of using lethal
weapons. The poems taken were of the three major peace poets, who have played distinguished
role in uniting people against extremists and radical ideologies by promoting a culture of hope
and solidarity, viz Dr Daisaku Ikeda from Japan, Dr K Satchidanandan from India and Kholoud
Al Mulla from UAE. Students of class VI zealously participated in the ‘Inter Class Recitation
Competition’, wherein they recited the poems composed by the aforementioned peace poets in
order to glorify their works and drive towards striving for world peace. The beautifully
composed poems mirrored the poignant realities of wars and their aftermaths, suffered by
innocent people, that awaken the audience to say no to war but advocate peace. ‘The Stars’,
‘Travellers’, ‘The Promise of Majestic Peace’, ‘Faith’, ‘The Plea’ were few of the thought
provoking poems recited by the participants which spellbound the audience.

On the fourth day, students of class VIII presented Power Point Presentations to share their
knowledge about the peace poets. The students were divided into groups of five to six students
each. The groups were assigned the poets for presentation. The presentations were done in the
respective classrooms in front of the classmates and teachers. The PPT's majorly talked about
the life, career, awards and poems written by the poets. At the end of the presentation, the
students did a comparative study of the poems written by these poets.
The students of senior block created a Facebook page showcasing the activities conducted in
the month of September-October. Selected students of classes XI and XII collaborated with the
students of DPS Sharjah and shared their self-composed poems on the theme of peace and
solidarity through an engaging Skype session, after the conduction of the teaching-learning
process. The students of DPS Dubai and Sharjah also visited DPS Jodhpur to participate in the
3rd International Muskan Bhandari Memorial Debate. The topic of the debate was ‘Failures of
Peace are more important than Victories of War’. DPS Dubai bagged the first and second
individual positions as well as the trophy. Bhargav Saikia of DPS Jodhpur bagged the third
position. The digital, conversational, literary and communication skills of the students were
honed through these in-house as well as collaborative activities. A literary fest titled-
“ILLUMINATI” was also organised in the month of October. The competitions held under it
included ‘Turn Coat’, ‘Debate’ and ‘Verbattle’. The topics of the same revolved around the idea
of peace.
CHALLENGES FACED AND OVERCOME: Major challenge faced was the research on peace poets
Dr Daisaku Ikeda from Japan, K Satchidanandan from India and Kholoud Al Mulla from the UAE.
It was also challenging to explain the diverse themes covered by these poets and adapt these
poems for a recitation platform. But once the poems were discussed through the teaching-
learning process, students grasped the theme and showed tremendous enthusiasm and
composed beautiful poems. Arranging the Skype session with DPS Sharjah was a bit of a
challenge, due to the time slot and connectivity glitches but once the session began, it was a
delight to listen to the self composed poems of students from both the host and collaborating
school.
CORE SKILLS AND SDGs COVERED: The core skills acquired by students through this
curriculum activity are: Digital Literacy, Creativity and imagination, Critical thinking, Personal
Development and Collaboration. The Sustainable Development Goals incorporated are: Peace
Justice and Strong Institutions and Quality Education.
