Global Citizenship endows the young students with knowledge, skills and understanding of the concepts
of becoming responsible citizens of a global community.
Curriculum activity Scrumptious Cuisines took them to the world of delectable and palatable cuisines.
They planned collaboration beyond their own country. They learnt to appreciate the similarities and
differences existing in cultures around the world. To value this diversity, it becomes mandatory to
understand that geography of a place plays an important role in deciding the food habits of the people.
The children explored the culinary delights and prepared mouth watering dishes by combining the
ingredients used in the Sri Lanka, India and UAE. They also got an insight into the global context of their
local lives. Valuing biodiversity and understanding the impact of environment on economies and
societies, the students received an insight into the diverse cross-border choices and perspectives in
eating regimes, tastes and nutrients provided by each country.

Comprehensive details of the activity and learning outcomes:
The third collaborative project and 3rd curriculum activity as per the approved action plan by
British Council ISA, titled ‘Scrumptious Cuisines’ was conducted in the month of January. This
project introduced the students of DPS Jodhpur and the collaborating school DPS Sharjah to the
delectable world of international cuisines, different food habits, meal time customs and impact
of geographical and historical factors on staple food of chosen countries i.e. INDIA, UAE and SRI
LANKA.
To familiarise the students with the food groups (P.F, EG.F, and BB.F), importance of nutrition
present in different food items and to develop the sense of appreciation for food, an activity on
Food and Nutrition was conducted by Class I. The informative session began with a story of a
boy who savoured potatoes in all the meals and faced health hazards. Through this, students
realised that to avoid such situations, they need to include Protective food in their diet. To
enhance their knowledge, images and videos of protective food were shown. In the next two
days with the help of examples and PPT, the meaning and need of energy/growth as well as
food groups were explained. To reinforce the knowledge, different food items of these three
food groups were displayed. Students were excited and were curious to know more about the
food groups. Further the activity continued with demonstration of videos of different cuisines
and assessment. During the assessment activity, children were enthusiastic to prepare their
own platter including all three food groups. Students learnt about various foods and their
nutritional value. After watching the videos of food wastage and malnutrition, they developed
the spirit of gratitude for food and showed positive attitude towards finishing their food.
The teaching learning sessions in Class II involved many activities like food-tasting, collage
making, demonstration of various ingredients and designing a meal. The aim of the teaching
process was to generate interest in different types of food, develop observation skills, to instill
an appreciation of elements of taste, culture and to develop aesthetic sensibility. The planning
was executed for six days in all the sections of class II. The session began by comparing an image
of a weak and a healthy boy. The children were asked to enlist the food items which can help
the weak boy to transform into a healthy one. She explained them about balanced diet. Children
were amazed seeing different images of a balanced diet. They were also explained about
different food groups and food available in different parts of the country. Children were excited
to see the staple food of different states. The teacher then extended the teaching session
through a digital Presentation and explained the different varieties of food available in
ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 159
Rajasthan and the reason behind its availability. The session became an epitome of ‘visual treat’
when the ingredients of different food items were shown and ‘Gatte ki Sabji’ was cooked in the
class by the teacher. The teacher then told about the state of Punjab and showed different food
items produced there. The children were then asked to taste ‘Sarson ka Saag’ and ‘Makki ki Roti’
which they enjoyed to the fullest. Giving flight to their fantasy, the teacher showed the images
of famous dishes of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra along with the preparation videos. ‘Sabudana
Khichdi’ was served to the children during the lunch break. They relished the treat given by the
teacher. For the final assessment, children were asked to bring variety of food items of all the
four states and they were displayed in front of them. The kids then chose variety of dishes for
their lunch including all the different food groups. Children gained knowledge about the
delectable world of cuisines, learnt about different food habits and at the same time developed
observation skills.
To make the students aware about different cuisines of the world and to appreciate and accept
food of different countries various activities were conducted in all the sections of class III. The
students were asked to list down the food items they are aware of. The students named many
dishes and could also relate it to different countries. The teacher took the students for a virtual
visit to three different countries i.e. India, Sri Lanka and UAE. The teacher dressed up as Chef
and students were familiarised with the location of the three places on the map of world. The
students learnt about the geographical conditions of the places and got a brief idea of the
availability of food items at these places and how the geographical conditions impact the
cuisines of that particular region. The teacher demonstrated the preparation of different dishes
from three different cuisines chosen for the activity in the EVS laboratory. The students were
enthusiastic to see the dishes being prepared in front of them. The teacher discussed each
ingredient used and its nutritive value. In the concluding session of Scrumptious Cuisine, a quiz
was conducted wherein the students participated enthusiastically. They compared and
contrasted the dishes of the three countries. They all enjoyed the learning process. They tasted
the scrumptious dishes prepared by the teacher on three consecutive days from each chosen
cuisine. They appreciated the taste and flavour of each dish. The Headmistress of Senior block,
Ms Sangeeta Yadav, Junior block, Ms Pallavi Das and In-charge Junior block Ms Purnima Rajvi
witnessed the cooking of mouth-watering cuisines. They tasted and appreciated the dishes.
Classes IV to VIII took up an exciting and innovative activity. Fascinating cuisines of the three
countries- Sri Lanka, UAE and India were studied by the students along with designing of
attractive and descriptive e-menu cards. These e-menu cards were e-mailed and exchanged
with DPS Sharjah. Students of DPS Sharjah created and shared the same. This gave an
opportunity to the students to know more about the varied cuisine and eating habits of UAE.
The students prepared a five-course-meal e-menu including ten food items from each country.
The five-course meal included –Salads, Starters, Main Course, Dessert and Drinks. This activity
helped the students gain an understanding of the variety of food items along with the
nutritional value of each. It also gave them an insight into the different geographical factors
ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 160
which affect the eating habits of people from different regions. The activity was a great ‘learning
by doing’ experience for the students which they really enjoyed. It enhanced their digital skills
as well.
The students of senior block (IX and XI) conducted research on the cuisines and eating style of
UAE, INDIA and SRI LANKA and prepared detailed PPTs and Word files of well known Indian,
Sri Lankan and Italian recipes. These were shared with the students of DPS Sharjah.
The students of DPS Sharjah also prepared PPTs and Word Files depicting the nutritional value
and unique flavours of their cuisine. This gave the students of both the schools, an opportunity
to come closer to each other’s culture through the scrumptious cuisine.
For the second activity, the students of classes IX and XI came together and participated in a
unique activity titled ‘Twist of Taste’. They took up a few major ingredients and delicacies of
UAE and gave them a twist of ‘Indian taste’. Two delicacies of UAE, Shawarma roll and Khabees
were given an Indian twist. Shawarma roll was converted into Paneer-soya-spicy-veggie roll
and Khabees was converted into Bajra-Dates Khabees. ‘Dates’ were given an interesting twist
and Chocolaty-Dates-Mukhwaas was created, which was an interesting take on mouth-
fresheners. Pictures of the same were shared.
Students of DPS Sharjah gave an interesting twist to Indian Samosa and made a veggie
Falamosa. They also made Dahi Tabouleh Puri giving a unique twist to Indian Dahi Puri. The
evidence was shared through pictures and YouTube links.
CHALLENGES FACED AND OVERCOME: Cooking while teaching was a bit of a challenge but
with the combined efforts of the teachers it became feasible. Collaboration became a challenge
for this project as the teachers and students of the collaborating school were busy with exams.
Taking up recipes from other country and giving them an Indian twist was tricky but the
teachers and students never failed to show sheer enthusiasm throughout.
CORE SKILLS AND SDGs COVERED: The core skills acquired by students through this
curriculum activity are: Creativity and Imagination, Student Leadership, Personal
Development, Collaboration and Communication, Citizenship and Digital Literacy. The
Sustainable Development Goals incorporated are: Decent Work and Economic Growth,
Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Good health and well being, Partnership for Goals and
Zero Hunger .

Culture is more than just manners. It is made of ideas, beliefs, values, language etc and is expressed through
celebrations, music, dance, food and customs.
Danspiration developed a cross cultural understanding by fusing the dance forms of different countries. The
Russian Ballet, the Spanish Flamenco and the Indian Bharatanatyam delved deeply into the nuances and
vivacity of all its graceful movements.
Each dance form opened a new Vista of learning ethics and values of different countries expanding the
horizon of knowledge and learning amongst students. They aesthetically acknowledged the
interdependence and interconnectedness around the world by understanding the festivities and
celebrations across globe.
The Dance Face Off activity presented by the students infused energy, stamina, flexibility and euphoric
synchronisation in the participants. Colourful costumes, shining accessories, soft music, swift swings
marked the integration of a Global cultural feat.

“Dance can reveal everything mysterious hidden in music. Dance is poetry in motion.”
Comprehensive details of the activity and learning outcomes:
The third project planned under British Council (ISA), titled Danspiration, commenced in
the month of August. This project aimed at taking the students of Primary, Middle and
Senior block on a creative and cultural journey to understand three major dance forms i.e.
Flamenco (Spain), Ballet (Russia) and Bharatnatyam (Indian Classical).
In the primary block students were introduced to these dance forms through an engaging
and instructional performance by the dance teachers. Through the teaching-learning
process the students learnt about the origin and cultural significance of these dance forms.
They also got a chance to dress in various costumes and accessories. They enthusiastically
participated in activities such as collage making and exhibitions, showcasing the
significance of performing arts in shaping the culture of a nation.
The middle block and senior block students engaged in exclusive dance classes, conducted
in the school, for these dance forms. They learned the formations, footwork and mudras
with sheer dedication and ardent involvement throughout the month of August. The middle
block students presented the nuances of these dance forms with precision during exclusive
performances.
The concluding activity was an energetic and vivacious dance-off showcasing a fusion of the
three dance forms, reflecting the cultural diversity and uniqueness of the countries of their
origin. The dance mash-up was a result of consistent teaching and learning process through
which the students were honed in these dance forms. It commenced with Flamenco dance
performance. It's a professional art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of
Southern Spain in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It was a captivating
performance, like poetry of footsteps. The kaleidoscopic display complemented with
aesthetic energy was a perfect presentation of graceful lifts and effortless arching.
Bharatnatyam was wonderfully presented by the students which left the audience amazed
and ecstatic at the same time. This dance form has its theoretical foundations in the ancient
Tamil text by Bharat Muni i.e. Natya Shastra. It gave them all the benefits that one gets by
ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 197
doing aerobics. It allowed the students to get in touch with their roots and express
themselves without words.
Next in line was Ballet dance. It's a formalized style of dance with its origins in the Italian
renaissance courts of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Ballet enhanced their work
ethics, perseverance, dedication, motivation, stamina, flexibility and strength. The students
performed it marvellously, displaying their strength and vigour. Their steps were
synchronized and well-coordinated. The final fusion of these dance forms added a touch of
magic as the auditorium resonated with the blending music and rhythmic movements. In
the spirit of increasing understanding between cultures and nations, such collaborative
projects are always encouraged by Delhi Public School Jodhpur.
In the end, Headmistress, Senior Block, Ms Sangeeta Yadav addressed the gathering by
greatly applauding the participants and the teachers for the wonderful and mesmerizing
performances. She complimented the teachers for learning these dance forms first and then
training the students immaculately with sheer grace and panache. The students and
teachers bloomed with pride on listening to these pearls of motivation.
CHALLENGES FACED AND OVERCOME: The major challenge was introducing Flamenco
which was never introduced in the dance styles taught in the schools. It was inspiring and
elating to see the teachers learning and imbibing this dance form and ardently engaged in
training the students in the same. The availability and improvisation of costumes keeping
in mind the traditional roots of Jodhpur was a big challenge but it was impressive to observe
that the teachers designed them with clear insights and opulent hues.
CORE SKILLS AND SDGs COVERED: The core skills acquired by students through this
curriculum activity are: Creativity and Imagination, Student Leadership, Personal
Development, Collaboration and Communication. The Sustainable Development Goals
incorporated are Good Health and Well-being, Gender Equality; and Peace & Justice Strong
Institutions.
