League, championship, playoffs, tournaments are some classifications of sports events
which declare winners, set records and draw scores of spectators.
Keeping in mind the objective of giving to the world a strong team, a disciplined mind, a
healthy future and competitive leaders, the curriculum activity of leaps and bounds
exhibited the vigour in the field. When it comes to Sports, the world becomes a global
village. Exchange of teams across National borders, tolerance for rules and International
championships establishes friendship beyond diplomacy.
Imparting the consciousness about the role of indigenous games and sports of UK, USA
and India, the students were taught the techniques of various games through this activity.
They embraced global values of discipline, self confidence, focus, character, cooperation
and empathy.

Comprehensive details of the activity and learning outcomes:
The curriculum activity for the month of December was dedicated to sports and games.
The title of activity was ‘Of Leaps and Bounds’. In our continuous endeavour to expose
our tiny tots to new avenues of learning experiences, the students of class Prep were
introduced with one of the traditional games of India, 'Santolia', also known as Lagori.
The aim was to enhance the knowledge of the children about this indigenous game of our
country with a parallel intention to develop the skills to aim, catch and throw a ball. The
introduction to the game was given through a video of the same. This formed the first
acquaintance of the children with Santolia and its rules. Secondly, numerous preparatory
sessions were organized in the playground where the kids learned to aim, catch and
throw a ball. As the process of technique development progressed, children were divided
into teams and they played the game taking teacher's guidance. For the assessment of
the skills thus eventually developed, a final game was organized. The game commenced
with a toss and a scoreboard was maintained. The teacher graded the players according
to a rubric formed for this purpose.
The game chosen for class I was Hopscotch. The students were explained the meaning,
origin and forms of playing Hopscotch game with the help of images and videos. A week
of preparation preceded the event, including the introduction of the game, recapitulation,
demonstration of skills, match and assessment. The event helped the students to develop
self confidence, concentration, discipline and team spirit. The activity concluded with an
assessment of the individual and group performance of the students giving them an
insight about the learning.
The game chosen for class II was Kho-Kho which involved planning, arrangement,
conduction and assimilation and developed the skills like running, observation, speed,
strength, concentration, team spirit and co-ordination among the children as well. The
planning was executed for four weeks in all the sections of class II.
During the first week the students were introduced to the game by showing them videos
and making them identify the game. Children were amazed to know that it is originated
in India in the state of Maharashtra. After the recapitulation, the next session began
where the children were told about the rules. The teacher demonstrated the game and
made the rules much more clear. 'Fairness in games comes from obeying the rules.' After
that the children learnt the rules and enlisted them before the teacher. A practice session
was conducted for the students, where they were to follow different rules. Motivation by
the teacher helped them do justice with their learning. The last week was the assessment
week, where the children had a match of Kho-Kho. Both the teams played fairly well.
ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 232
Children encouraged the team members by clapping and cheering for them. Students
were evaluated on the basis of skills like chasing, dodging, back to back running and team
spirit.
The students of class III were introduced with one of the traditional games of United
States of America. The aim of the activity was to enable the students to explore and
appreciate various indigenous games and sports played in USA.
A sports championship of the games and sports of the countries covered was organised
for classes IV to IX and XII, after consistent and dedicated training and practice. The
games covered in the championship were Basketball, Cricket and Kho Kho. Yoga, Judo
and Athletics were also a part of this event.
A sports quiz was conducted for the students of classes IX and XI based on the three
games. It was an Inter House Competition wherein six teams participated with full
enthusiasm and preparation. A project file was also prepared by the students of class XI.
It covered a detailed research on the history of popularity of basketball, cricket and
hockey.
The students learnt about the origin of the game and rules of the game in detail. They
practised the skills of dribble, passes and defence. Various practice sessions were held
which were followed by a final match. At the end, it wasn't just the techniques and
strength of the children that came into forefront but the team spirit, zeal and enthusiasm
were pretty evident amongst the young players.
A classroom quiz and questionnaire was conducted for class IX. Based on the survey
conducted, the students of class XI prepared a data analysis report in a project file for a
comparative study of the popularity of these games.
CHALLENGES FACED AND OVERCOME: The major challenge was to incorporate all the
varied games at an overall school level. Including 80% students and 80% teachers in this
curriculum activity was also challenging. Besides the traditional games like Seven stones
and Hopscotch to be learnt by gizmo generation seemed difficult; however the children
were informed about this game in a manner that they accepted them as a healthy
interaction between generation.
CORE SKILLS AND SDGs COVERED: The core skills acquired by students through this
curriculum activity are: Digital Literacy, Student’s Leadership, Personal Development
and Citizenship. The Sustainable Development Goals incorporated are: Good Health and
Well Being, Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Partnership for the
Goals.
