A political ideology is the science of ideas and values that can be radical, ethical, liberal, revolutionary
and unique to make a significant impact in transforming a country. Though Global Interdependence is
prevailing and has become a reality, however, the asymmetrical distribution of power, wealth and
resources restrict the world to come into or unite in one political ideology.
This activity through its projects brought out the fervour of embracing many core progressive values
and commitment to a progressive vision of government, international affairs and economic and political
policies. Students understood the three forms of Government - Monarchy, Dictatorship and Democracy
existing in the three countries namely UK, North Korea and India.
International dimensions of advocating peace, justice, equality etc. surfaced as learning outcomes of the
projects and students displayed an understanding of the most suitable form of Government, making
decisions in the most rational manner, electing their rightful leader thereby enabling societal and
environmental progress.

Comprehensive details of the activity and learning outcomes:
The aim of this Curriculum Activity was to enable the students to study and research about political
systems/ideologies of India, North Korea and England. Teaching Learning Process took place on the theme
of ‘Political Ideologies of the World’. The students could identify and differentiate between the three major
forms of Government; Constitutional Monarchy in the context of England, Democracy with reference to
India and Dictatorship in the context of North Korea, at the end of the lessons. The main aim of the lessons
was to teach the working of these diverse forms of government. For the beginners, it confined to the
introduction of the three political ideologies- ‘Monarchy, Democracy and Dictatorship’ along with the names
of popular leaderships of India, England and North Korea. The lessons were paced in such a manner that
the main objectives were achieved by the end of the lessons. The students were able to define and
differentiate between Monarchy, Democracy and Dictatorship. They also gave examples of the countries
where these forms of government exist. The lessons aimed at teaching the working and difference between
these three major forms of government with the learning outcomes where students could clearly express
their feelings on certain forms of government. Here, the students were able to understand the worth and
attributes of democratic form of government. They expressed their pride in being the part of the biggest
form of democratic government. Its characteristics are most common in the western and in some eastern
countries of the world. In class VIII the Political Ideologies were discussed with the aim and objective to
highlight the features of different ideologies and to compare the governmental or the administrative system
of India, England and North Korea. The basic features of Constitutional Monarchy of UK in the modern times
were highlighted and also how it has changed itself today, was explained. In the Indian Democracy, citizen’s
rights were defined to the students and they were explained how democracy is one of the best forms of
governments in the world. Students were briefed about the ill effects of Dictatorship with the help of case
study of North Korean Government. Consequently, they were able to compare and contrast all three forms
of government.

The students of classes V to VIII worked together as a team and presented a mélange of thoughts, ideas and
expressions in the form of a special assembly. The special assembly presented by them was based on the
‘Political Ideologies around the world’. The assembly commenced with a motivating thought emphasizing
the fact that right education imparted to the students leads to the country’s development in future. An article
based on the ‘Political Ideologies around the World’ gave an insight into the three main ideologies –
‘Democracy, Dictatorship and Monarchy’. The students also presented an informative skit depicting the
Democracy, Dictatorship and Constitutional Monarchy. The presentation aimed at broadening the mind-set
of the audience. It helped them empathize with the people of North Korea. It was presented in a manner so
as to understand the advantages and disadvantages of democracy and dictatorship. The assembly
culminated with a poem comparing democratic and dictatorial forms of government. Students came to
know clearly about restrictions imposed by the dictatorial rulers like Kim Jong of North Korea, on the
common people.

A Scrap Book Activity was conducted for the students of class IV based on their research on Democracy
(India), Dictatorship (North Korea) and Constitutional Monarchy (U.K.). Activity-based learning describes a
range of pedagogical approaches to teaching. Its core premises include the requirement that learning should

ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 271

be based on doing some hands-on experiments and activities. It encouraged kids to take responsibility for
their own learning experience. The students of class IV worked individually on “Political Ideologies around
the world”. Drawing different pictures and doing certain classroom activities, they learned about the basic
outcomes of different governmental systems. The scrapbook activity gave clarity of three ideologies –
Democracy, Dictatorship and Constitutional Monarchy. Students of class IV collected pictures of National
flags, Political leaders of three countries India, North Korea and United Kingdom. They wrote meanings and
described the features, in the scrapbook, in the form of pictures and hand written articles on Democracy,
Dictatorship and Monarchy in scrapbooks. Students pasted pictures of different leaders like, Narendra
Modi- the Prime Minister of India, Kim-Jong dictator of North Korea and Queen Elizabeth II of United
Kingdom. The best three scrapbooks were selected. They were quite motivated as their interest through
this activity ignited the spark in them to learn more about these given countries. The activity was conducted
successfully in supervision of teachers. Students are looking forward to working on such activities in future
which will give them opportunities to explore more and widen their horizons.

On 25 July 2019, a British council activity of chart making was held at Delhi Public School Jodhpur, wherein
all the students of class V to VIII participated enthusiastically. The students were divided into different
groups to work collaboratively in the chart making activity by touching upon the topics of Political
Ideologies of Democracy (India), Dictatorship (North Korea) and Constitutional Monarchy (United
Kingdom). Students collected the information in the form of printed and handmade pictures, photos of the
leaders, symbols and cut-outs. These all were shrunk and pasted on white and coloured paper sheets. Each
class was divided into three main groups consisting of 5-7 members. Students had a prior knowledge of
these ideologies. On the basis of their knowledge, interest and understanding they selected their topics,
collected information from various sources and placed them on a chart depicting the same in quotations,
pictures and icons. These charts came out to be extremely attractive and full of information. They proved to
be quite resourceful for all the students.

The basic objective of this activity was to make the students aware of the existing political ideologies of the
world and their significance in context to Democracy, Dictatorship and Constitutional Monarchy. As a
learning outcome, the students came to know how Indian Democracy is one of the best forms of government
and a good political ideology in the world. Students learned about monarchy and its liberal democratic
version in the United Kingdom. They also realized why dictatorship of North Korea is a big threat to human
rights and world peace. All in all, the activity turned out to be interesting for the students. It proved its
significance through the active participation of all the students and served the aim of disseminating
information among the students.

“Liberty cannot be preserved without general knowledge among the people.”

Human curiosity is perhaps the best secret weapon of all in the struggle to unravel the workings of the
natural world. In order to satiate the curiosity of the students and expose them to the new facets of the
general awareness, an inter house quiz on the topic ‘Political Ideologies of the World’ was organised for the
students of classes VI-VIII. A preliminary test was conducted. It consisted of 20 questions. Six students who
scored the highest marks, one from each house, qualified for the Quiz. The quiz was based on the Political
Ideologies viz Democracy, Constitutional Monarchy and Dictatorship. Three countries of the world were
chosen as the symbols of these political ideologies i.e. India as a democratic country, Great Britain as the
symbol of Constitutional Monarchy and North Korea as the symbol of Dictatorship.

The quiz encouraged the students to learn much more about the political ideologies of the Great Britain i.e.
Constitutional Monarchy, India as a Democratic country and North Korea as a Dictatorial country. Students
learned different terms related these political ideologies. In the visual round, they identified different
leaders and the political flow charts. The quiz became the most appropriate learning tool as different types

ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 272

of general and political questions were asked from the participants. It also added value by enhancing
knowledge of the young minds.

Children would always prefer to have some entertainment along with their studies. Therefore, we need to
provide them with education in the garb of entertainment. Proceeding with the idea, Chart and Poster
making activity was conducted for the students of class VI to VIII.

All the students participated actively and prepared colourful and informative charts in their respective
groups. Best charts were selected and displayed on the school bulletin board. This activity was conducted
to enhance the artistic skills and students’ knowledge and understanding of the political ideologies of the
world. Students used different types of charts, attractive colour medium, many captivating pictures, slogans
and sketches.

The basic purpose of the activity was to make them aware of the importance of Democracy and to
understand the present situation of the Constitutional Monarchy, and its existence in United Kingdom in
modern times. Students learned about the governmental system and were able to relate other similar
countries of the world with the Political Ideologies Viz. Democracy, Monarchy and Dictatorship. Both
negative and positive aspects of Monarchy, Democracy and Dictatorship were well reflected in the form of
slogans, thoughts/facts and pictures, wherein the students designed appealing and educative charts.

After the topic of Political Ideologies was thoroughly discussed in all the sections of IX and XI (Humanities),
the students of senior block enthusiastically participated in the activities conducted under the first
Curriculum Activity of British Council ISA. A debate competition was organised for class IX on the
proposition, ‘Constitutional Monarchy is better than Democracy and Dictatorship’. The students not only
enjoyed researching on these political systems but also showcased their debating talent on the dais. The
results were declared and feedback was taken from the students as well as teachers. A thought provoking
and engaging group discussion on the topic, ‘A fragile Democracy is better than a strong Dictatorship’ was
conducted in all the sections of class XI. An enthusiastic participation ensured a commendable level of
involvement, research and clear perspective. A Facebook page displaying the audio-visual details of all the
activities was created by the students of class XII (CS and IP).

CHALLENGES FACED AND OVERCOME: Taking up the topic in the junior classes was a big challenge but
the way the teachers planned and executed the activities made it simple and relatable. Another challenge
was to generate interest of all the sections of the senior classes for the topic. But relating it with current
political situations enabled students to relate to it and discussion became an easy platform for its execution.
Involvement of teachers from subjects other than Humanities and English was challenging but the diverse
design of activities made it convenient.

CORE SKILLS AND SDGs COVERED: The core skills acquired by students through this curriculum activity
are: Digital Literacy, Citizenship, Student Leadership and Personal Growth. The Sustainable Development
Goals incorporated are: Quality Education, Reduced Inequality, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and
Partnerships for the Goals
