The dimension of space was added with the commencement of the Curriculum Activity - Exploring Space
Stations. Scientific temperament was at its best when students took up projects, discussions, exhibitions
and quizzes. Innovation and exploration about the work of space stations geared up the young scientists
and they could understand the working of satellites, launch vehicles and life in space.

Through an effective TLP, the students were briefed about the existing plans and projects of NASA, ISRO
and ESA, which ignited these young minds and they started their research based on space science. Their
learning gave a different dimension to understanding the whole concept when they participated in Quizzes
and 3 D Model making. Openness, adaptability and an enthusiasm for learning contributed to this journey.

Developing a critical evaluation of global space science, equality of opportunities and responsible action by
scientists in the making and future citizens, accomplished the objective of the activity.

Comprehensive details of the activity and learning outcomes:
The Curriculum Activity titled ‘Exploring Space Stations’ aimed at enabling the students to
acquire knowledge, study and research about the three significant space agencies and their
explorations. The classes included were: II to IX and XI. The teaching and learning sessions
in class II included many activities using flashcards, showing videos, colouring the logos,
think and paste activity for designing a rocket, demonstrating the launch of a rocket through
a handmade launcher and a fun way quiz.
The aim was to make children aware of the space agencies and the importance of artificial
satellites. The topic was introduced by showing different flashcards of the Sun, Moon, stars
and Earth and the students were asked to identify them. The teacher further enhanced their
knowledge by discussing characteristic features of the Sun, Moon, stars and Earth. The
session was made interesting and informative by showing videos of solar system, sun,
planets and moon revolving around the earth, thus introducing the term satellite. Further
they were shown real pictures of heavenly bodies and probing questions were asked as how
and where have those been taken from. This sparked the students’ curiosity and a variety
of answers came up which provided a good base for the introduction of artificial satellites
and their uses. Students coloured the logos and pasted them in their scrap books which
honed their skills of colouring and helped them remember the same. The children
were fascinated on witnessing the launching of rocket in the class through a handmade
launch pad. The sense of awe reached to its highest level when they watched the videos of
astronauts staying in a habitable space craft. To give wings to their imagination, think and
paste activity was conducted, where the students designed their own rockets with the given
cut outs. To assess the acquired knowledge, an interesting quiz was conducted. Each child
was shown a flash card and asked a question or a riddle related to the same. This entire
learning session enthralled the kids and made them inquisitive about space. Many of them
even expressed their desire to become an astronaut.

For class III the aim was to get the learners acquainted with the three space agencies. Two-
week planning was conducted across all sections of class 3. The teaching and learning
process was undertaken through activities using flashcards, enactments, videos, drawing
and colouring, making models and group activities. The topic was introduced with a
brainstorming session about space, solar system, planets, stars and moon using flashcards.
The session was made lively by the students who presented themselves as the Sun, planets
and Moon holding flashcards in their hands. The teacher facilitated an understanding of
natural and artificial satellites through flash cards and videos. The planning involved
probing the learners to understand the importance of artificial satellites in our lives and to
think of people and organizations dealing with these satellites. The students made their
flashcards showing the mind map about different uses of artificial satellites which

ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 304

contributed even more to their understanding. They drew the artificial satellites and logos
of the space agencies in their scrapbooks. It helped develop their artistic skills and was an
aid in enhancing the long term memory for the same. The students located the headquarters
of various space agencies on the world map, using colourful stickers reinforcing their
knowledge of the location of the space organizations. They were shown the locations on a
bigger map in the class, after which they marked the same on their own map boards. They
were also encouraged to make models of satellites and rockets as home assignments, thus
enhancing their skills of model making. Making models and drawing logos gave them hands-
on experience and provided them a window to inculcate a scientific temperament. A
recapitulation was done in the form of a group activity. The activity was aimed towards
assessing the knowledge of space exploration and agencies involved. The students were
divided into six groups and each group was given a subtopic. The subtopics were NASA, ESA,
ISRO, satellites, solar system and futuristic approach. They were given a bunch of flashcards
to choose from. The students identified the flashcards belonging to their subtopic and made
a collage using them. The collage making activity summated with quiz based on the collages
made by the students. They were eager to answer and know more. The quiz helped them
recall the knowledge acquired during the teaching-learning process.

For classes IV and V, a special assembly was conducted on ‘Exploring Space Stations and
Agencies’. The day commenced with a calm and soothing prayer invoking God’s blessings
followed by an inspiring thought by A.P.J Abdul Kalam “Look at the sky. We are not alone.
The whole Universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream
and work”. Thereafter some of the students dressed as astronauts presented a wonderful
poem on “I am a Little Astronaut”. The poem depicted a sense of accomplishment and
fulfillment in exploring space. The assembly was basically based on man’s dream to set up
a habitat in the outer space. Further, a short skit was presented by the students with the
Power Point Presentation as an aid. It portrayed a detailed history of space stations as
discussed by various space scientists. They showed the advancement of aeronautics and
space science. Students were mesmerized and dazzled on watching the astronauts aboard
the International space station as it was enacted on the stage. At the end, the Headmistress
congratulated the participants for putting up such an informative as well as an entertaining
assembly.

Groups of students from every section of each, classes VI -VIII zealously contributed to
emboss their creativity about the space expeditions and the International Space Station, on
the posters. Meanwhile, the students of class VIII prepared a project file on the space
missions, their achievements and exploring the surface of distant planets. These project files
carried the brief study about the explorations and expeditions made in the recent decades.
Mars Pathfinder, Viking 1 and 2, Rakesh Sharma’s space journey, ISRO, ESA and NASA were
the core affairs, marvellously catalogued in the Project Files. The acquired knowledge was
assessed using of Science Quiz as the tool. The quiz was held in the school auditorium and
categorized into three rounds namely; General Round, International Space Station Round
and Rapid Fire Round. Six teams representing six houses comprised six participants from
each house. The contestants proved their mettle by answering those fiery questions put up

ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 305

by the quizmaster and grabbed the attention of the audience. The Science Quiz indeed left
an indelible impact on the audience. They got to know many unknown facts about the space
and space agencies. The most fascinating moment that stole the whole show was the
declaration of the results by the Headmistress Middle Block. She addressed the students and
talked about the three days long Science Activity. She encouraged the pupils to nurture
themselves to become part of ISRO, ESA or NASA. She also motivated the students to keep
the same spirit alive for all such activities to be held in the years to come. She not only
appreciated the Posters, and Project Files made by the students but also every effort that
made this event a grand success.

The students of senior block showcased an exceedingly innovative and scientifically
propelled exhibition, which was organized in the STEM lab. The students of classes IX, X and
XI exuberantly executed the science exhibition. Remarkable feats of ESA (European Space
Agency), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and ISRO (INDIAN SPACE
RESEARCH ORGANISATION) were diligently presented by the students through more than
15 working and non-working models. The students researched and applied their scientific
knowledge in making the models. They also showcased their presentation and speaking
skills for the same. They confidently explained the working of the models and their
significance. The students who witnessed the exhibition keenly acquired the information
and put forth their queries. The CS and IP students enthusiastically participated in the
creative Facebook page competition and the winning page was selected as one of the official
evidences for ISA.

Challenges faced and overcome: The major challenge was introducing space and space
science in junior classes but the creativity of the projects propelled the excitement of the
students and they gladly gained the knowledge through the activities. The project files
posed a challenge of copy and pasting of information. This was overcome by insuring that
the students used encyclopaedias and journals more than internet to seek authentic
information. The students also used apps like ‘Curiosity’ and ‘TED’ to research for the same.
Another major challenge was the construction of working models. The science teachers
acted as enthusiastic facilitators to overcome this challenge.

Core skills and SDGs covered: The core skills acquired by students through this
curriculum activity are: Digital Literacy, Creativity, Student Leadership and Personal
Development. The Sustainable Development Goals incorporated are: Good Health and Well-
being, Quality Education, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Sustainable Cities and
Communities and Responsible Consumption and Production.

“When you do the things in the present that you can see, you are shaping the future that
you are yet to see.” Acting as a foundation for holistic development of its students and
teachers, DPS Jodhpur strives to sow a community of responsible citizens by reaping an
educational structure that amalgamates in itself: scientific temperament, literary
propensity, inclination towards art and aesthetics, managerial acumen, sportsmanship,
ethics and integrity. With British Council DPS Jodhpur has got a comprehensive outlook
of Core Skills and SDGs which were definitely a part of the teaching-learning process in
some way or the other but weren’t seeped in the curriculum in such an extensive
manner, ever before. Educational tours and excursions, student-exchange programmes,
celebration of International days and consistent collaboration with DPS Sharjah and
DPS Dubai on academic front have been an integral part of the progressive journey of
DPS.

The school firmly believes that in this dynamic world interspersed with technological
leaps and AI probing in every arena; sensitivity, consciousness, empathy, a sense of
belonging and awareness at a social and environmental level should be considered not
only pivotal but inevitable. Keeping this perspective, it has stepped up to adopt and
imbibe the comprehensive initiative of UN, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people
and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries -
developed and developing - in a global partnership. The school plans to work in this
direction and make its student-parent-teacher community recognize that ending
poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve
health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling
climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. The school plans to
achieve the same by roping in the SDGs in the teaching-learning process and promoting
them through student-groups like Social Welfare and Literary committees, in order to
sensitize the students.

DPS Jodhpur aims at fostering International ethos throughout the school and
embedding it within the curriculum, imbibing in its students a sense of international
awareness and global citizenship. We already collaborate with our sister schools DPS
Dubai and DPS Sharjah through student exchange programme and EEE Consortium for
cultural and academic association. The school also aims to start a teacher-exchange
programme, on the same lines. We are planning to increase the range of partners
through platforms like Mystery Skype wherein the teachers and students can
collaborate and exchange their work online with a wide range of schools across the

ISA Dossier 2019-20 Page| 313

world, thereby ensuring an involvement of wider community. We plan to adapt new
ways of embedding international education in the school thereby creating positive
ripples in the wider community. This will include educational action research,
teambuilding, project management, embedded global themes and new skills in
Information and Communications Technology.

Under the guidance of British Council, the teachers of DPS Jodhpur have recently
completed a course in one Core Skill i.e. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. The
school plans to take up the remaining 5 core skills for the teachers in near future. In the
area of science and research a few students have been selected to go to Singapore for
Young Scholars’ Boot camp which is a great opportunity for them to enhance their
knowledge in the field of AI. On the same lines, students selected in the category of Gold
Scholars under ASSET Talent Search are invited to Perdue University and North
Western University for summer programmes as well as online programmes. The school
aspires to promote many such programmes in future to create accountable global
citizens.
