Do you ever feel as though your Japanese has reached the point where you are able to use it
well, but you still want to become better or you still struggle to sometimes find just the right
phrase? We think there are many people in that situation, and this book was born from our wish
to create something to help those people fulfill their desire to become better Japanese speakers.
This book ineludes more than just stock phrases you use in daily conversation such as "gochi-
sousama desu" and "otsukaresama desu" In these pages, we have compiled useful phrases that
will allow you to more precisely express your thoughts and feelings in lively, effective conversa-
tions with Japanese people.

For example, if someone helps you, a simple "arigatou" does convey your thanks. But if you were
to say
"tasukarimasu!'
the person who has helped you will probably be even happier and upbeat.
Japanese people also value shared meetings and experiences in the past. They often use the
phrase, ''senjitsu wa arigatou gozaimashita; but a simple reply of "iie" may make them feel some
what disappointed. Instead, a reply of
"kochirakoso''
will help to immediately bring you and the person you are talking to closer to one another. It is
these kinds of phrases that we hope you will learn through this book.

This book also includes phrases that directly state how you feel, such as "shinjirarenai," "shimatta"
and "yappari: as well as phrases that show your stance on something, such as "sansei" and "sono
mama de kekkou desu." Its pages are also full of explanations of these phrases' usage, as well as
natural example sentences that you may not see in traditional textbooks. We hope you make full
use of these resources.

We hope that all of you will become able to communicate in Japanese as not passive receivers,
but as free and active participants able to express their own thoughts, and we truly hope that
this book can help you achieve that goal.

This book is broadly divided into two sections: Part 1 and Part 2. Proceed with your studies ac・
cording to the steps listed below. By practicing consistently and thoroughly, you will naturally
achieve an ability in the basics of Japanese conversation.

STEP” ►►► Understand the meaning of the phrase

First, get an understanding on the meaning of the phrase, image where the
conversations are taking place, and understand the intention of the phrase
and its effectiveness.

Listen to the conversation examples. Imagine where the conversations are
taking place, and the speakers feelings, while ascertaining the intentlon of
the phrase and its effectiveness. Additionally, be careful of accents and into-
nations especially for short phrases.

STEP 目►►► Say the phrases out loud

After the listening practice, try to mimic the sounds of the CD directly after
they are spoken. Furthermore when you become familiar with the phrase,
practice the same way by only listening to the sounds without looking at
the textbook.

STEPQ ►►► Repeat Exercises

You will become proficient through repetition drills. You can simply listen to
the CD, but it would be best to practice the drills out loud. (See: How to Use
the CD, p.14)

* You can begin your study of the phrases at any point. You might want to study the drills by
sections classified with function and its nature, as it will be easier to organize.
