THE BAY AREA

San Francisco is the smallest in size of the seven
counties that encircle the San Francisco Bay. To the
north of Golden Gate Bridge, Marin County has
a wild, windswept coastline, forests of redwoods,
and Mount Tamalpais, which offers magnificent
views across the Bay Area. In the East Bay, popular
destinations are Oakland’s Museum of California
and the famous university, Gourmet Ghetto, and
the botanical gardens of Berkeley. The Peninsula
area stretching to the south of San Francisco
is full of interesting urban areas that hug the
beautiful coastline, while the Napa Valley and
Sonoma counties to the north are famous for the
manicured beauty of their vineyards, and their
famous wines and upscale resorts.

BOARDWALK

⌂ 400 Beach St, Santa Cruz # 11am – 8pm daily ∑ beachboardwalk.com
The historic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a classic seaside amusement park
that’s both eye-catching and fun. Hosting thrill rides and family-friendly
attractions, it has an enviable setting overlooking the beach.

Dating from 1907 and dominating the Santa
Cruz waterfront, the Boardwalk is the oldest
amusement park on the West Coast. The entire
Boardwalk is a California Historic Landmark,
and although most of the original amusements
have been replaced by modern rides, two still-
functioning centenary rides are National
Historic Landmarks. The first of these is
the classic Looff carousel; one of only five
remaining in the USA, it was built in 1911 and
features hand-carved horses, which spin to
music from a 19th-century pipe organ. But
the main attraction is undoubtedly the Giant
Visitors swarming between the brightly Dipper roller-coaster, whose wave-like tracks
colored rides along the Boardwalk soar up above the Boardwalk. Built in 1924, this
