Tribute to Carole Robertson at Jack and Jill Day

The Chapter combines Jack & Jill Day and Carole Robertson Day by hosting a large, annual chapter
wide family day of remembrance and celebration. A memorial to Carole Robertson was held at our
Jack & Jill Day which was celebrated on September 23, 2017. Carole Robertson was an avid Girl
Scout. This year all the Girl Scouts of the chapter honored that notion by leading a ceremony
developed by the various age groups under the guidance of the Chapter Moms.

Preparing for the ceremony served as an enriching component to the annual celebration as the
children were exposed to the tumultuous times leading up to the bombing that claimed the life of
Carole Robertson. During our celebration, we kick off the new program year with activities to
welcome everyone back from the summer.

2020-2021 GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE CHAPTER PROGRAM HANDBOOK

Greetings Gorgeous Mothers of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter!

Let’s POWER FORWARD! Welcome to the 2020-21 Program Year! It is indeed an honor to
serve as your Chapter President alongside the Executive Leadership Team to blaze the
path FORWARD to Empower, Engage, and Elevate all Children to Lead. During this
unique time in our country’s history, it is imperative that we remain steadfast in our goal to
develop the next generation of servant leaders. Equipping our youth with knowledge and
the power to use their voice has never been more important. Intentional program
planning will be key for us to achieve this mission.
Planning programming activities for 62 families and 99 children/teens is no small feat. It will be equally challenging to keep
our families safe as we POWER FORWARD during a global pandemic. First, I want to challenge and charge each mother
to be creative, courageous, and innovative in planning grade group activities in all areas of the thrusts that will push and
propel our children/teens FORWARD to do more, think more, and ultimately to BE MORE!

To BE MORE, our children/teens must know from whence they came. My second charge is to empower our youth with
knowledge of our rich history. Every grade group activity should include a Black History lesson in the targeted thrust area.
Let us ensure they all know why we celebrate Juneteenth, why we sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, and why we recite
poems written by Mayo Angelou and Langston Hughes. So, when they are faced with direct and systemic racism, they will
be educated, equipped, and empowered to rise-up, fight-back and pay it FORWARD because they have been taught
about their rich heritage and legacy of achievement against the odds.

While we POWER FORWARD for our children and families, we must take the necessary time to care for us. As mothers
we care for everyone before caring for ourselves. Because of this, I am asking that we become our Sister’s Keeper and
renew our sense of “Village”. In our fast and changing world, it is important that we keep faith, family, and fellowship close
to our hearts and our FORWARD momentum as a collective and unified chapter.

As our members matriculate and tenure out of the chapter, we must focus on educating, mentoring, and preparing the
remaining membership for future leadership. We need more members to step into mentorship and leadership roles for
the continued advancement of our chapter. So, let’s all commit to doing our share to ensure that we have strong
leadership both now and in the future. It is only through full engagement and commitment that our chapter can
continuously Power FORWARD as a beacon of service to our children and the communities we serve.

Our chapter has an accomplished record in serving as national and regional officers, earning top accolades in
programming, and even attaining 5 Star Chapter status. Our Teens also share a strong record in leadership, oratorical
competition, youth volunteer hours, scrapbook competition, and the step show. Even though we are challenged to
organize safe virtual activities, we must remain engaged and continue our rich legacy of achieving more! We may be in a
pandemic, but we will excel FORWARD in all that we do!

If we are all fully engaged, no one member will be overburdened in the achievement of our collective mission and
objectives. I invite you to share your ideas and concerns with me and the Executive Leadership Team. Through open
communication and transparency, we can accomplish anything! I am excited about what lies ahead as we POWER
FORWARD to Empower, Engage, and Elevate all Children to Lead and I hope you are excited too.

2020-2021 GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE CHAPTER PROGRAM HANDBOOK

Greetings Phenomenal Mothers of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter
of Jack and Jill of America;
Welcome to our 2020-2021 programming year. I am humbled to serve as your 2020-2022
Program Director. Our former First Lady, Michelle Obama said it best, “With every word we
utter with every action we take, we know our kids are watching us. We as parents, are their
best role models.” (Democratic National Convention 2016) I am honored to plan and execute
excellent chapter programs that align with the Jack and Jill National Program Thrust and
Regional Programming Initiatives. “The Power to Make a Difference for All Children On Mission.
On Purpose.” The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter has built a legacy of service and leadership.
Grateful for our past directors, I seek to continue and build upon the legacy of our illustrious
chapter programs.
Receiving the “Five Star” Chapter National Recognition and the superior rating on our handbook was a honor. Let’s make it
a ‘three-peat’! It is my goal to keep providing superior programming in service to our children and community. May we
continue to ‘Power FORWARD’, maintaining our great legacy!

‘POP’, Let’s Keep it POPin’! As the 2020-2022 Program Director, my programming vision for the year is to: (1) continue
providing outstanding “Five Star” quality programming for our children and families; (2) empower our children with
knowledge and opportunities to be involved in peaceful activism considering the current social climate across the nation;
(3) increase the participation of our children in our national and regional programs; (4) continue to encourage
collaborations with our grade groups including the Super Stars, giving them an opportunity to play an active role in
planning chapter activities; and (5) continue to recognize our dedicated, hardworking host moms with ‘POP’ “Mom(s) of the
Month” for developing activities that demonstrate creativity beyond the limitations of the current world pandemic.

We are stronger together! Collaboratively and vigilantly we will accomplish all of our national, regional and local
programming goals as we ‘Power FORWARD’.

Graciously Yours in Service of Our Children,

2020-2021 GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE CHAPTER PROGRAM HANDBOOK

Dear Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter,

It is my pleasure to serve as the 2020-2021 Teen President for the Greater Fort
Lauderdale Chapter of Jack and Jill. As a member and now Teen President, I have been
blessed through the long-term relationships that I have developed with the Moms and
Teens. Those relationships are what inspired my theme for the programming year which
is "One Family, One Goal."

Upon establishing this theme, I did not anticipate that our world would be facing such
great challenges and social injustice in 2020. Now more than ever, we need to be "One
Family, One Goal." Our power to make a difference is now! This year, we have used this
virtual environment to achieve the goals set for our programming year. We successfully
planned a virtual Teen retreat, and I had the honor of representing our chapter at the
Regional Teen conference. Our Teen group continues to make a difference in our
communities.
The GFTL Teens created and were recognized during the National Convention for our "Your Voice Your Vote" video which
addresses the importance of voting and the impact it has on our current and future laws. Although many of us are not able
to vote in this election, we encourage our moms and other adults to voice your choice.
We continued our involvement in community service through social distancing activities such as the Fort Lauderdale Beach
clean up and participating in a virtual giving campaign for Feeding South Florida. We are also making a difference in our
communities through supporting our chapter's "Black Dollars Matter" initiative by buying black to support our local black
businesses during this critical pandemic time.

Nelson Mandela once said, "It always seems impossible until it is done." Although this year, was not what we expected, I am
proud of what we have been able to accomplish and what the future holds for us. Jack and Jill has inspired me to push
through adversities, help others who are in need and to dream without limits.

When I reflect on our current Regional Teen Leadership theme, "United as a People, Fighting to be Equal", I am encouraged
to be an example of hope and love as I continue to lead our Teens through a successful programming year. It is my desire
that the GFTL Chapter Teens continue to make a difference in this world by having fun, providing impactful activities and
serving the community. I want us to leave a legacy like the solid foundation that Jack and Jill has instilled in all of us. My
heartfelt appreciation for allowing me to serve as your 2020-2021 Teen President.

Sincerely,

Alexis Janay Henderson

2020-2021 GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE CHAPTER PROGRAM HANDBOOK

Welcome to the 2020-2021 Program Year!

First, I would like to congratulate and thank each of you for your
programming tenacity, brilliance in execution, and dedication to our
children. Programming is the heartbeat of Jack and Jill. As a mother member
who served as the Southeastern Region’s Program Chair for four years, this
is one of the areas I treasured most! Everything in our region’s centered
around a program. Programming starts and ends with each one of us. Many
times, our programming events help to shape the minds and ideas of our
young leaders.
I constantly hear stories from our Jack and Jill recent grads and “young” adults regarding their Jack and
Jill experience. Each time I hear alumni stories, it brings joy to my heart and a smile to my face as
these young adults are reminiscing on Jack and Jill’s programmatic thrusts and sharing the impact and
influence it had on their lives. They are telling their Jack and Jill Regional Secretary history or herstory.
It has been said time and time again, “What you think, you become. What you feel you attract. What
you imagine you create.” Life is one of our greatest gifts, and we must live it to our fullest. Mothers,
one day, your children will be alumni of our beloved Jack and Jill. Some will sit around and discuss
their experiences in Jack and Jill while growing up. They may recall the Super Cluster, Regional Trip,
Teen Leadership Summit, Regional Teen Leadership Conference, Speak Up-Speak Out, Ann Owen
Gordon Teen Oratorical Competition, Global Youth Ambassador Program, Beautillion, Cotillion, Age
Group activities, Chapter wide activities, and so much more! You may recall some sweet memories
yourself and smile or laugh out loud.

Thank you for creating sweet memories for our children. The love you pour into them with your
programming talents are immeasurable. Your Passion, Purpose, and Pride are intentional as you
empower our children to do more and dream more. You inspire them to become the future leaders
they are destined to turn out to be and serve as the pillars to their success.

Have a great programming year!

For the children,

Jack and Jill Foundation Overview
Jack and Jill Foundation Executive Director and Board

Our Vision
Jack and Jill Foundation transforms African American communities, one child at a time.

History of the Jack and Jill of America Foundation

The Jack and Jill of America Foundation was founded out of the desire of Jack and Jill
mother to govern our impact on the lives of all children. During the 1964 National
Convention, the National Service Project Committee was formed to study the needs of a
philanthropic arm of the organization. In the 50s and 60s, Jack and Jill mothers made
significant contributions to charities, which primarily supported health issues affecting
children. However, as significant as the contributions were, none of our officers were
afforded representation on the boards of these recipient foundations. Our members had
no input into the policy- making of the organizations they supported. Therefore, Jack and
Jill of America paused to examine its policies, and the idea of creating its OWN charitable
foundation evolved.

In 1968, Jack and Jill became the first among African-American organizations to create a
philanthropic arm dedicated to the betterment of children, especially African-American
children. The Jack and Jill Foundation is OUR foundation born out of OUR desire to impact
the lives of all children. It is part of our mission of “to seek for all children was we desire
for our own.” We determine the impact OUR Foundation has on each of our communities
through our grants, service projects and contributions.

Over the years, OUR Foundation has contributed over $5 million dollars to communities.
As a result of the economic downturn, communities need us now, more than ever. “To
whom much is given much it’s required”. Let us continue to support our communities by
giving our resources, time and talent to work on OUR Foundation.

History of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter

The Fort Lauderdale Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was admitted full
membership into the national organization during the 16th National Convention in
June 1964. The convention session was held at the Olympic Hotel in Seattle,
Washington. The idea for organizing a chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. in Fort
Lauderdale was introduced by Beatrice (Bea) McLaughlin Davis in 1963 to a group of
22 mothers. Bea, as she was affectionately known, invited the group of women to her
home and outlined the objectives, aims, and the need for such an organization in the
Fort Lauderdale area. Everyone in attendance, agreed that an organization of this
magnitude was needed and set forth to complete and submit the application. It was
approved. The Fort Lauderdale Chapter was organized and as required, served one
year as a provisional chapter under the leadership of Beatrice “Bea” Davis. On
November 21, 1964, the Fort Lauderdale Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was
installed in a solemn candlelight service at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
The National Program Director, Aurelia T. James of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was the
installing officer. During the 2014 National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, the
chapter was approved for a name change to become The Greater Fort Lauderdale
Chapter.

Since its inception, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter has had an impact on the growth and
development of children and families in the organization as well as those throughout the
community. Beatrice M. Davis, the first president, and the mothers in the chapter sponsored
several projects that fostered cultural, educational, social, and recreational activities for their
children and children in the community. This tradition of service has continued over the years.
Some of the outreach initiatives have included agencies such as Women in Distress, Children
in Distress, Outreach Broward, the L.A. Lee Branch YMCA, SOS Children’s Village, The Flight
Center, The Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center and Children’s Harbor. Chapter
members continue to donate time and gifts to the children at local hospitals, homeless
shelters and nursing homes.

Throughout the years, our chapter teens have been recognized for making the highest
donation to the Foundation, placing in the scrapbook and step show competitions and placing
first in several other categories, such as the T-shirt competition, teen sports category, and
talent competition. Our teens have also been recognized for their oratorical, academic, and
athletic skills while blazing new trails in leadership. The 2018 - 2019 Regional Teen President,
Jordyn Allen, hails from Greater Fort Lauderdale.

The Fort Lauderdale Chapter has hosted two Teen Leadership Conferences and will assist the
Miami Chapter as a co-host for the 2019 Southeastern Regional Teen Conference that will take
place in Hallandale Beach, FL in June 2019. Our first time hosting teen conference was July 27-
30, 1999, at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Airport. The theme was “Teen Power: Combating the
Crisis.” The second time we hosted was June 13-17, 2012, at the Harbor Beach Marriott on Fort
Lauderdale Beach. The theme was “American, Black & Classic.” There were over 1,000
attendees. Teen Sports Day and Teen Peer Leaders were introduced as part of the Teen
Conference for the first time.

Chapter History at a Glance

Candace Berry-Vaughn served as Chapter President from 2008 - 2012. Under her leadership,
the theme for the Chapter was “All Hands on Deck.” The Fort Lauderdale Chapter started off
the 2008 program year with a fierceness by assisting the Miami Chapter with hosting the 38th
Biennial National Convention. The convention was held July 22-27, 2008, at the Doral Resort in
Miami, Florida. Shauna Hicks-Lee served as delegate and Sandra B. Irish served as alternate
delegate. During this program year, the historic election of the first African-American president
of the United States, Barack H. Obama, took place. In fact, Groups 1 and 2 hosted a joint
election party activity on November 1, 2008, to educate our youth about the election process.
The Southeastern Region took the lead in coordinating a trip to an inaugural celebration that
took place in Washington, DC. From January 17-20, 2009. Members of the Fort Lauderdale
chapter along with other Jack and Jill of America, Inc. members from the Southeastern Region
stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City and participated in various activities in Washington,
D.C. A highlight of the event was a children’s ball hosted by the Southeast Region. During the
2010 National Convention, held in Chicago, IL., notable achievements for the chapter included
outstanding programming in the area of Health for our “Work It Out” initiative addressing
childhood obesity. This program was used as a pilot with the Nan Knox Boys and Girls Club. The
Chapter received programming grants in the 2009 program year in the amount of $1,000 for a
self-esteem proposal to be conducted during the Fall 2010. Tor Pasteur competed in the State
Teen Oratorical and advanced to compete in the Teen Oratorical Competition at the 53rd
Annual Teen Conference held in Tampa. Teen Tor Pasteur was elected as the 56th
Southeastern Region Teen President.

Donise Brown served as the chapter president from 2012-2014 with the theme “It Takes a
Village...Bonding Together for Success.” The chapter proposed very aggressive Foundation
goals and met all of them, including raising the most money for Foundation in our chapter’s
history. This allowed the chapter to make a substantial contribution to Jack and Jill Foundation.
This also allowed us to support The Girls’ Choir of South Florida, Healthy Babies, Miles of Hope,
Shadow Buddies at Angel’s Pediatric Heart House, and the Urban League of Broward. We
increased our presence in the community by hosting our 2nd Annual Community Health Fair
and participating in Step Up to the Polls and the MLK Day of Service. We also established our
Father’s Auxiliary under the leadership of Dad Kevin White and launched our Fort Lauderdale
Chapter Website. The Fort Lauderdale Teens had a record setting year as well. During this year,
16 teens attended the 57th Annual Teen Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. Kalin Houston
was the Delegate and Ashley Davis was the Alternate. We had teens who served Peer Leaders,
appointed officers, committee chairs and committee members during the conference. Our
young men took the prize for 1st place in the TUG-OF-WAR competition.

Whye challenged new and tenured mothers to use
their talents to continue the work of Jack and Jill. The
chapter celebrated 50 years of serving the
Greater Fort Lauderdale community with a gala and
funding to support local charitable organizations.
The program handbook received Superior ratings
and the highest rating in the Southeastern Region
(108/100 points). Activities for the program year
were targeted to achieve the goal of the national
theme, Power to Make a Difference. We served
our city in Pink and Blue as we focused on the
needs of children in our community at the Children’s
Diagnostic Treatment Center, SOS House, Heart
Gallery of Broward, Ann Lee YMCA, and P.I.N.K. Girls
at Park Lakes Elementary. The GFTL chapter hosted
the Children’s Cluster at Dillard High School and
rendered creative programming and workshops for
regional Jacks, Jills, and mothers.

The 2015-16 Program Year continued the theme “Bloom Where You Are Planted” under
President Whye. We kicked off the program year celebrating Jack and Jill Day with a Caribbean
theme complete with island cuisine and Carnival-inspired arts and crafts. Our program
handbook once again received Superior ratings, earning a score of 105. We partnered with the
HEART Gallery of Broward for our Christmas program. For our MLK Day of Service we set up a
teen room equipped with book shelves, a couch and wall art at Women in Distress through a
grant we received from Broward College. Our Oratorical Workshop and Competition were a
huge success, drawing children from all over the community. We ended our program year on a
high note installing 19 new mothers into our chapter. We celebrated Black Family Day by
honoring our graduating teens and moms and introducing our new families to the chapter and
invited guests. Our teens also received the 3rd place trophy for their scrapbook during the
regional teen conference.

The 2016-17 Program Year began with a bang under the
leadership of President Jeanne Charles Wood with the theme
“AIM High: For Our Children and Our Communities.” In an
important presidential election year, we started the year with
community outreach participating in Souls to the Polls, a march
and rally to promote voter registration and early voting.
Keeping in line with the 2016 Summer Olympics, the “Jack and
Jill Olympics” was the theme for Jack and Jill Day. Our families
were divided into teams and competed against one another for
medals. One of the highlights was the “Dunk-a-Dad” tank to
raise money for Foundation. Under new Program Director Lisa
Ivory, the program handbook again received a Superior Rating
receiving 105 out of 100 points. Our holiday "Mingle & Jingle"
soiree brought in over 100 toys donated to the Children's
Diagnostic Treatment Center. For our MLK Day of Service
Activity we painted beautiful murals and planted gardens of
love at Dr. MLK Jr. Elementary School in the heart of Ft.
Lauderdale. Our Black Family Day included church service and
a jazz brunch where we honored 10 graduating seniors, 3
graduating mothers, and revealed our Mother-of-the-Year Lori
Peters. Our teens displayed their POWER to Make a
Difference at the Regional Teen Conference in Orlando,
Florida. Our very own teen Jordyn Allen was voted to serve as
the 2017-2018 Southeastern Teen Regional Treasurer

The 2017-2018 Program Year continued with the theme AIM High: For
Our Children and Our Communities under the leadership of President
Jeanne Charles Wood. We kicked off the year with the a 'Moms Trip'
Retreat Theme. For Jack & Jill Day, our families enjoyed America's
pastime by attending a Major League Baseball game to see the Florida
Marlins take on the Atlanta Braves. Prior to the game, we learned the
history of Negro Baseball League, and honored Carole Robertson. We also
hosted our very first signature event A Family Affair: Wildin’ Out at the
Museum to raise money for the Jack & Jill Foundation and local charitable
organizations to honor Little Big Shots, children who are making an
extraordinary impact on the South Florida community. The signature event
was such a phenomenal success that it received FIRST PLACE honors for
the Best of the Best Programming activity in the Civic category at the
Jack & Jill National Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri. We also
continued the legacy of programming excellence by receiving one of the
highest ratings in the Southeastern Region on the chapter program
handbook by scoring 104 out of 100 points. On February 14, 2018 one of
the most tragic events to occur in our nation happened in Broward
County, right in the Greater Ft. Lauderdale Community when 17 students
and faculty were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. In a
show of solidarity for the lives lost, and to fight for common sense gun
laws, our children participated in the March for Our Lives Rally in Parkland,
FL to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. The program year ended
welcoming 14 new families to our chapter in April, followed by A White-Hot
Black Family Day where we sailed the intercoastal on the beautiful black-
owned South Beach Lady Yacht. President Jeanne Wood was honored as
Mother of the Year.

Our teens displayed their POWER to Make a
Difference by Doing More during the Teen Regional
Conference held in Atlanta, GA in June 2018. Our teen
step team placed for the first time – bringing home 3rd
place honors. Teen President Jordan Pollock served as
delegate and Teen Vice President Christopher Smith was
the alternate delegate. Teen Chris also received 2 nd
Place honors representing Florida in the oratorical
competition, and Teen Alexis Henderson won first place
honors for Outstanding Female Athlete, Division I. The
highlight of the teen conference was when Teen Jordyn
Allen was voted by her peers to serve as the 2018-2019
Southeastern Regional Teen President.
