Carole Robertson Memorial Day

September 26, 2020
Each September, Jack and Jill Chapters across the country celebrate the
legacy of Carole Rosamond Robertson, who was a member of the
Birmingham Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated. Carole
Rosemond Robertson was one of the four little girls killed in the
Birmingham, Alabama bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church on
Sunday, September 15, 1963. Carole was 14 years old at the time of
her death, as were Addie Mae Collins and Cynthia Wesley; Carol Denise
McNair was only 11. Twenty others were injured in the bombing. The
church was a center for civil rights meetings, and just a few days earlier,
courts had ordered the desegregation of Birmingham’s schools. The
16th Street Baptist Church bombing marked a turning point in the Civil
Rights Movement in the United States and led the charge for the
passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

Carole Robertson was born April 24th, 1949. She was the third child of
Alpha and Alvin Robertson. Her sister was Dianne, and her brother was
Alvin. Her father was a band masterat the local elementary school. Her
mother was a librarian, avid reader, dancer, and clarinet player. Carole,
like her mother, enjoyed reading. She excelled at school and was a
straight-A student, a member of the marching band, science club, and
she was also a Girl Scout.

Carole Robertson Day Activity:
In honor of celebrating the legacy of Carole Robertson, on Saturday,
September 26, 2020 the Greater Fort Lauderdale (GFTL) Chapter paid tribute
to Carole and the other three girls killed that fateful day of Sept. 15, 1963.

Five of GFTL’s Rising Star Jills used their voices to spotlight the POWER TO MAKE
A DIFFERENCE FOR ALL CHILDREN ON MISSION ON PURPOSE by having the
honorable pleasure of interviewing Ms. Dianne Robertson Braddock, Carole’s
older sister. During the pre- recorded interview, Mrs. Braddock discussed Carole’s
Robertson’s interest, the events leading to the church bombing, how our Jack &
Jills can use their platform to ignite change and more. This thought-provoking
interview brought home for our Jack and Jills the infamous 16th Street Baptist
Church bombing that claimed the lives of Carole, Addie May Collins, Denise
McNair and Cynthia Wesley.

After the debut of the interview, to the chilling sounds of Glory by John Legend
and Common, each grade group released balloons into the sky as a celebration
of the life’s, whom are affectionally known as “ The Four Little Girls”.

The tribute was part of the chapter’s Drive- In themed Jack and Jill Day, held at the
Central Campus of Broward Community College.

Jack & Jill Day

September 26, 2020
Jack and Jill Day began in 1948 under the direction of Dorothy Wright, our first National President. The
concept was that this day would be our family round-up time. Chapters are required to have a family activity
in September that brings all the membership together after the summer break. It is a time to also invite
families that are interested in joining the organization. It focuses on the programmatic thrusts of social and
recreational. However, many chapters have incorporated cultural/heritage as part of the day. The focus is to
promote the membership growth of the organization at an event that promotes what the organization is all
about.
Chapter Activity: Jack & Jill Day Drive-In
The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter hosted an old school, socially distanced
Drive-In for Jack & Jill Day on September 26, 2020, at Broward Community
College in Davie, Fla. The chapter had nearly 200 Jacks, Jills, Moms, PopStars, and
Associates in attendance. The theme for the evening was celebrating being
Young, Gifted & Black. Upon entering the grounds of the campus, sounds of
Black Anthems, such as James Browns’ “I’m Black & I’m Proud" and DaBaby’s
“Rockstar", could be heard through the speakers. Members wore Black
Empowerment attire and celebrated Black Excellence by viewing the film - Black
Panther! Before the viewing of the film, previously recorded videos of each GFTL
grade group aired, charging members to vote and to appreciate the past
struggles, recognize the present challenges and celebrate the future victories of
the Black lives who should ALWAYS matter. Each guest received a taco meal kit,
a beverage, and a snack box filled to the brim with goodies. It was a magically
“melanated” affair.

Founders' Day Celebration

January 31, 2021
In 1938, when Marion Stubbs Thomas invited 20 women friends to a meeting in her
Philadelphia home, she didn’t realize the potential impact of her action. Thomas, a concert
pianist and mother, envisioned a social club that would connect her children with others from
local Black families. She hoped to rally the visiting mothers to help provide cultural
opportunities that the Great Depression and Jim Crow laws denied most young African
Americans. The following statement was taken from an article by Mrs. Marion Stubbs Thomas
(National Founder), which appeared in the first issue of the official publication undefined Up
The Hill Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated. She tells in simple and beautiful language of the
start and rapid growth of Jack and Jill. She also expressed the ideas that Jack and Jill has
followed since its initiation.

“It is with deep and, I hope pardonable pride that I look back over the first
ten years in the life of Jack and Jill. When the first little group of us
organized in January 1939 in Philadelphia, we were seeking to stimulate a
social and cultural relationship between our children. When I contacted
the mothers and suggested a meeting to discuss plans for our new club,
they were all enthusiastic and responded in a manner which was heart-
warming. Little did we dream at the time that this idea, which was so
important and inspiring to us, would grow to such proportions. As new
members were welcomed, and then new chapters formed, the aims and
ideals of Jack and Jill were strengthened, always with our children as the
focal point. To us as mothers it has become a means of furthering an
inherent and natural desire – the desire to bestow upon our children all
the opportunities possible for a normal and graceful approach to a
beautiful adulthood. It is intensely satisfying to predict a nationwide group
of mothers and children bound together by similar interests and ideals. As
we grow in numbers and achievements, may we always keep before us the
lofty principle upon which Jack and Jill of America was founded.” The
objective is to celebrate the rich history of our great organization and
founder, Marion Stubbs Thomas, and to re-dedicate ourselves to our
national goals and mission.
