Chapter Activity/ Carol Robertson Day

On Sept. 26, 2020, the Greater Ft. Lauderdale Chapter paid tribute to Carole Robertson and the
other three girls killed that fateful day of Sept. 15, 1963. Carole was a member of the Birmingham
Chapter of Jack & Jill when she was killed by the infamous 16th Street Baptist Church bombing.
In honor of celebrating the legacy of Carole Robertson, five of GFTL’s Rising Star Jills had the
honorable pleasure of interviewing Ms. Dianne Robertson Braddock, Carole’s older sister. During
the pre-recorded interview, Mrs. Braddock discussed Carole’s Robertson’s interests, the events
leading to the church bombing, how our Jacks & Jills can use their platform to ignite change and
more. This thought-provoking interview brought home for our Jacks and Jills the infamous 16th
Street Baptist Church bombing that claimed the lives of Carole, Addie May Collins, Denise McNair
and Cynthia Wesley.
After the debut of the interview, to the chilling sounds of “Glory” by John Legend and Common,
each grade group released balloons into the sky as a celebration of the lives of the young ladies
respectfully and affectionately known as “The Four Little Girls”. The tribute was part of the chapter’s
Drive- In themed Jack and Jill Day, held on the Central Campus of Broward Community College.

Bringing Jack and Jill History to Life
Activity: Clean – Up & Wade In - Super Stars (Grades 9 -12)
During the Civil Rights Movement sit-ins took place all throughout the South. In Fort Lauderdale during
the 1960s, our city had wade-ins to protest African Americans not being allowed to go to Fort Lauderdale
Beach. During that era of time African Americans were required to take a small makeshift boat to go to
their segregated, ‘designated’ beach located in Dania, Florida. On Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 8:00 AM,
the Greater Fort Lauderdale teens will demonstrate the Power to Make a Difference at Fort
Lauderdale Beach. The teens will work collaboratively to remove litter, clutter, and dangerous items from
the beach. By removing pollution from beaches and waterways, the teens will help reduce blight, protect
animals, and help the marine eco-system. We will have guest speakers from the Minorities in Shark
Sciences to speak to the teens about careers in marine biology, and the importance of preserving the
ecosystem by removing the toxic items left on the beach. Afterwards, a Fort Lauderdale civil rights
historian will speak to the teens about the wade-ins led by civil rights activist Eula Johnson and Dr. Roy
Mizel. The teens will see first-hand how social activism produced change in their community. The teens
will then stage their own wade-in to protest and bring attention to a cause that they would like to
highlight. This activity allows the teens to participate in hands-on community service, gain an
understanding of the ecosystem and their role in making sure they preserve the marine ecosystem for
future generations, explore careers in STEAM and use their voices and the Power to Make a
Difference via peaceful demonstration just as it was done in the 1960s.

Activity: “If these walls could talk, what would you hear?” - Blazing Stars (Grades 4 -5)
On March 6th at 11:30 AM, Jack Nicholas and Jill Sasha will be taking you on a historical journey in
the City of Miami. Our location you ask? The City of Miami’s Black Police Precinct and Courthouse. It
was established in May 1950 as a separate but equal component of the Miami Police Department.
During the Jim Crow era of the south the establishment of a separate but equal courthouse and
precinct was considered a pioneering step in providing fairness to African American police officers
and judges. The courthouse and precinct served as a police station that allowed police officers to
house defendants and for judges to adjudicate in the same facility. This Jewel is located at 480 NW
11st Miami, Florida, 33136, in the historic Overtown District, just west of downtown Miami. In 1963
the City of Miami closed the Police Station and Courthouse, ending the Jim Crow practice and
ushering in the integration of the City of Miami Police force. At the time of integration there were
forty-one African American policemen that grew from the first five to occupy the facility.

The city of Miami Black Courthouse and Precinct is important to our community and especially for
our Jacks and Jills because they will have the opportunity to be reminded or introduced to the
concept of separate but equal. Once referred to as ‘property’, separate did not mean equal for
African Americans during this era. Having separate accommodations and the essence of inequality
rooted in the language ‘separate but equal’ permeated through the African American community. It
is this belief, set into practice years ago that perpetuates the systemic racism that persists in this
county as well as the critical lens in which African Americans view law enforcement and the policing
practices exercised in our communities. The City of Miami Black Courthouse is noted in history as
the only one of its kind in the nation. A true a historical treasure right in our own backyard.

Our Jacks and Jills will arrive at the courthouse and precinct for a tour to see archived documents
and police uniforms. The will be donned in their own police caps with handcuffs in tow. We will
then conduct a mock debate or trial on the topic of their choosing. Special guest, one of the first
African Americans to graduate from the University of Miami School of Law, Attorney H.T Smith will
preside over the mock debate or trial. The donation for this event is $15 per person. All proceeds
will go to the maintenance of this historic and unique facility.

Jacqueline Moore Bowles Leadership Modules

As part of the National Programming Thrust in Education, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter
will foster a commitment to leadership development and financial literacy modules:

JMB Leadership Development Module #2: Vision
Vision Objective: This module will assist teens in creating a vision for
themselves and help them to recognize that vision leads the leader.
Vision Abstract: Vision is defined as the ability to perceive something not
actually visible as though mental acuteness or keen foresight. Vision is the
ability to see what can be and be willing to unselfishly give of oneself to
make it happen. At the completion of this module, teens will be able to:

1.Understand how vision becomes a part of a good leader’s life.
2.Improve their vision capabilities.
3.Articulate the vision of great leaders.

Module #2 Activity: “Virtually” Speaking – Teen Retreat (Grades 9-12)
The Super Stars held their Annual Teen Retreat “Virtually” on Sunday, August 16, 2020, from 7:00 PM - 9 :00
PM. Using the success of the Virtual Teen Conference as a guide, they kicked-off the program year with an
exciting planning retreat. The teen groups theme for PY 2020-2021 is One Family, One Goal and the Retreat
was right in line with this. Prior to the retreat, the teens were randomly grouped into sub-committees. Each
sub-committee was assigned specific program thrusts, and charged with coming up with both an in-person
and virtual activity incorporating their thrust. Each member in the group had a specific role (leader,
recorder, timekeeper, reporter, etc.). They were asked to creatively present the activity during the retreat as
a group. This proved to be a valuable exercise in demonstrating how each role is important to achieving a
common goal. The group gained valuable experience in the activity planning process, developing
accountability, responsibility and problem solving abilities. Also, during the pre-planning meeting, each teen
was asked to provide their vision and goals for life after college. The most creative response with the
highest popular vote was awarded the "Visionary Award". They were additionally tasked with developing a
business plan in the form of a commercial to highlight and sell their programming activity based on a
specific thrust. The teens also had some fun during the retreat! They participated in competitive games for
prizes. Everything from Kahoot to Scavenger/Trivia Hunts, and Pokeno. They also participated in a group
activity using virtual breakout rooms. Each breakout room had to come up with a musical performance
singing nursery rhymes, and the kicker was they had to do it using different musical genres. That was a lot
of fun! The Super Stars displayed that they are indeed One Family with One Goal, and they have the Power
to Make a Difference while conducting the business of Jack & Jill of America, Inc. by working, playing, and
living virtually together.

Module # 2 Activity: Chopped Twinkling Style - Twinkling Stars( Grade Prek -K)
On March 6, 2021 at 1:00 PM, the Twinkling Stars will meet virtually to hone their cooking skills. Under the
guidance of a personal Chef Stephen, they will learn about kitchen safety and cleanliness when preparing
food. They will also be provided a budget to spend at the supermarket. Each Mom will help their child keep
track of the price of each item. The Twinkling Stars will indicate if they stayed under budget before starting
the cooking session. Our Jacks and Jills will have an opportunity to make healthy snacks and learn the
importance of making healthy choices in this fun activity. Additionally, the Twinkling stars will use their
POWER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR ALL CHILDREN ON MISSION. ON PURPOSE, by role playing and
engaging in a discussion about putting themselves in the shoes of families that are less fortunate. The
following questions will be asked: What does a family do when they go grocery shopping but doesn’t have
enough money to purchase everything they need? With a very small budget to work with they shop carefully
trying to stretch every dollar, considering quality over quantity or vice versa. Questions will be considered.
Do we spend more money to purchase nutritious, healthy food receiving less in quantity? Do we spend less
money so that more food can be purchased lending less nutritional value? How much can we get for the
amount of money we have? What meals might my family have to skip this week as a result of not having
enough money? Because we can do more, the twinkling stars will collect and donate canned items to Tee's
Food Pantry, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Fee for this the activity is $20.

Chapter Health Activity: NAMI Walks Broward County
For PY 2020-2021 the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter was a proud sponsor of the NAMI
Broward County NAMIWalks event. Due to Covid-19, it was a virtual event. They called it
“NAMIWalks Your Way”. Our Health Committee coordinated a fitness challenge as the
event for our chapter. We asked our families to engage in at least 15 minutes of physical
activity together (take a walk, dance, do a workout, swim, play basketball, play tennis, etc.).
We then asked that they record no more than a 30 second video of the family doing this
activity. The combined footage was used to create a 3 minute video of the chapter that
was shown at the NAMIWalks virtual event on October 10 th , and our own Jack and Jill Day
on September 26 th. As a little incentive we had an anonymous pledge to our GFTL NAMI
Walks Team Donation Page of $4 for every family that sent in a video/picture. We received
twenty- two submissions. We also took donations to our GFTL Team Page for NAMIWalks
and collected $1425 in addition to our $500 sponsorship. This made us one of the top
fundraisers for this event.

Activity - Power to Lead: Virtual Town Hall Connection - Super Stars (Grades 9-12)
Real progress takes place when young people are Encouraged, Motivated and Empowered

lives and especially the lives of others. VIP guests may include women representing various
backgrounds in industries such as Politics, Law Enforcement, Business and/or Education.
The interviews will be led and moderated by our Jacks and Jills. The focus will be the specific
impact that each VIP guest has had on society. Guests will share with the Jacks and Jills how
they can become effective leaders and make significant contributions in their communities.
Each Jack and Jill will have an opportunity during the activity to share their personal “Shero”.

National Programming Thrust: Civic/ Community Service
The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter proudly serves the community and has clearly stamped it in pink
and blue. Throughout the year, we have several community service projects that prove our POWER TO
MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR ALL CHILDREN ON MISSION. ON PURPOSE in the lives of children and
African American families throughout the Greater Fort Lauderdale community. Learning starts the
moment we enter the world and is a lifelong process. We Can, and we will do more for our children by
teaching and affording them the opportunities to be servant leaders. Therefore, each grade group
includes a service activity as part of their calendars, or may include a service component in every grade
group activity. Below are individual grade group service projects and chapter-wide community service
projects:
Activity: Chris Smith Christmas Classic- Super Stars (Grades 9-12)
The Teens will participate in a Community Service Project where they will be wrapping presents such as
toys for children living in the 33311 zip code on Christmas Eve. The event will be held at 200 NW 6th
Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311 on December 24, 2020 at 2:00 PM. This is in support of Dad, Chris
Smith, and his Annual Chris Smith Gift Wrapping & Gift Delivery initiative. The teens can and will do
more by participating in this ";Reason for the Season" activity. Each teen will be given a budget to
purchase as many gifts as possible. This will enhance their understanding of money, budgeting and
philanthropy. The Teens will exercise THEIR POWER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR ALL CHILDREN
ON MISSION. ON PURPOSE by assisting with delivering the toys on Christmas Day, and spreading
holiday cheer, love and hope to underserved families in the African American community.

Chapter Activity: MLK Day of Service
The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter will continue to use THE POWER
TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR ALL CHILDREN ON MISSION. ON
PURPOSE in our beautiful community by expanding our partnership
with Feeding South Florida. Our chapter will volunteer to sort and
package food on Monday, January 18, 2021. Due to the pressing need
to help our local families, the chapter will also host a virtual fundraiser
during our day of service. Our goal will be to raise $1,000 for Feeding
South Florida. We want our service and dollars to make a difference in
our local community.

Activity: Be My Valentine - Super Stars (Grades 9 -12)
We are living in unprecedented times. The world pandemic has changed the
way we interact with one another. We realize that the elderly can feel lonely
and isolated. Veterans, especially, have limited access or fellowship with each
other. Seeking to spread love and cheer to the Veteran community the super
stars will collaborate with AARPs Veteran Brigade to create care bags. These
bags made with love will include, but not be limited to peppermints,
crossword puzzles, hand sanitizer, Valentine's Day treats and socks for
veterans. The items will be delivered to a local veterans nursing home.

Community Activity: Oratorical Workshop & Competition
As part of the National Programming Pillar of Power of under Civic-Community Service, the Greater Fort
Lauderdale Chapter will foster a better tomorrow for ALL children in Communications and Public Speaking.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. will host an annual FREE Oratorical
Skills Training Workshop for youth between the ages of ten and nineteen. During this community event
on Saturday, February 6, 2021, via a virtual platform, the youth will learn about the historical impact of
how oration has moved our culture and community through changing times for freedom, justice,
equality, and empowerment. With this enlightenment, our youth will be empowered and gain
confidence to lift their voice. Through the oratorical workshop module, the youth will be able to interact
with and gain insight from local media and public speaking professionals on how to develop and
sharpen their speaking skills in order to showcase their Power to Make a Difference and continue to
help our community. The youth will engage in exercises to reduce fear and anxiety of speaking, receive
hands-on experience with creating their own speech to influence change and have it critiqued. In the
last few years, the Oratorical Committee has seen over 200 youth participating. Greater Fort
Lauderdale Blazing Stars (grades 4th & 5th), Rising Stars (grades 6th -8th) and Super Stars (grades 9th
-12th) attend the oratorical workshop, along with friends and classmates. Because We Can Do More, a
special workshop for our youngest of Jacks and Jills, Twinkling Stars (Pre-K-K) and Shining Stars (grades
1st – 3rd) will be held in a separate breakout room to teach our youngest participants how to find the
power of their voice.

At the workshop, youth are encouraged to register and participate in the annual Oratorical
Competition that will take place virtually, or at Lauderhill City Hall (pending local social distancing
mandates) on Sunday, March 7, 2021. For well over fifteen years, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter
(GFTLC) has provided a forum for youth in the community to participate in an Oratorical Competition.
The first chairperson of the oratorical competition was Judge Mary Rudd Robinson. Judge Robinson was
chairperson of the then Male Oratorical Competition for more than ten years. After her first oratorical
competition, she and her husband, Judge Michael Robinson, realized two things. First, the teens need
an opportunity to prepare for the oratorical competition, and second that they need to collaborate
with other organizations. In honor of their many dedicated years of service, in 2011 the Oratorical
Competition was renamed the Judges Mary and Michael Robinson Oratorical Competition.

Father's Auxiliary

On June 19, 2020, the Jack & Jill of America, Inc. (Greater Ft Lauderdale Chapter) held a virtual
Zoom online meeting with the Jacks & Dads entitled; “A Time for Change”. The meeting
was moderated by the Dad’s Auxiliary Chair, Shaun N. Perry. The Jacks & Dads enjoyed a positive
and stimulating discussion about the current Social Justice issues that our young men and
boys are facing in our communities. The invited guest speakers were; the Rev. Dr. J.C. Howard
from the House of Hope Ministries in Macon, GA and Dr. Gregory A. Salters who serves as a
Major with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Each of the speakers were dynamic and had
a very informative, inspiring and thoughtful message & discussion surrounding the main theme
of our meeting. Approximately, 30 Jacks & Dads were in attendance. The Jacks and Dad were
very engaged and asked serious questions on the subject matter. The speakers empowered our
Jacks with great information and knowledge that was very practical. The Jacks were focused,
engaged and motivated throughout the entire meeting. It is our plan to continue holding future
discussions and forums such as this and believe even more participation will be achieved.

Although membership in Jack and Jill is held by the mothers, it is equally important that our
children learn from male role models. We encourage the involvement of fathers to assist
mothers in delivering programming that stimulates the growth and development of children,
because fathers play a vital role.

Foundation Putting the FUN in FUNdraising!

The Foundation Committee of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter has had a number of exciting and
engaging fundraising activities to not only raise funds but serve our communities as well. Our goal this year
is to make Foundation Fun!
To kick off our Foundation fun, we tested the knowledge of our Moms with "Foundation Friday". Moms
were given Foundation trivia questions every Friday for the month of October and the first mom with the
correct answer was featured in our weekly newsletter and received a $10 Amazon gift card.
To support our communities, we participated in our "Black Dollars Matter" initiative for the Month of
October which is National Foundation Month.
In collaboration with our Teen Foundation Chair, the Chapter and Teens raised money and had some fun
by collecting dollars with the letters "G" for Greater Fort Lauderdale and "F" for Foundation. How can we
do more, the dollars collected were donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Center with a portion
allocated for the National Foundation assessment.
Our Jack and Jill Families are also supported local black businesses by tracking their dollars spent at
African American business. Spending activity was tracked weekly by the Foundation Chair.
In addition, the family who collected the most dollars and spent the most dollars was recognized in our
newsletter as our Foundation Family of the Month.
Our "Black Dollars Matter" initiative didn't stop there! On November 7th, the Greater Fort Lauderdale
Chapter will support a local black owned Shell gas station during our "GFTL Day at the Pump." The
Chapter will have a brief program about our initiative which will feature our very over chapter dad,
Representative Bobby Dubose.

Chapter Retreat

The Chapter Planning Retreat was held on August 29, 2020 via Zoom Meeting. The focus of
the retreat was to energize and engage the chapter membership to POWER FORWARD
leading with the Power to Do More for our children and community, even amid a pandemic.
When life gives you lemons, you do your best to make sweet pink lemonade. Our Jack and Jill
Mommas displayed that we can do virtually anything by working, playing, and laughing
together with a surprised greeting from NP Kornisha Brown as she shared her vision of
“packed with purpose prepared to deliver” for her leadership team. President Adrelia led the
charge to empower and encourage our mothers to be innovative and creative to continue
our legacy of strong programming activities. This will require every mother embracing her
strength and being available to make an impact in our community. Considering our current
climate, we were encouraged to include a cultural component for each grade group activity
to expand our children’s Black History knowledge. In addition, President Adrelia charged us
to become active participants in the legislative process as we celebrate 100 years of the
women’s suffrage. We reflected on the voting rights laws and black women as we watched a
video featuring past Member At Large, Dee Dawkins-Haigler. Our programming duo, PD Anji
and APD Kelli gave an upbeat refresher on how to write a five-star programming activity
description. All mothers were then dismissed to their Zoom break-out room to further
discuss and plan to complete the grade group calendars.
The second half of the retreat focused on our Jack and Jill Mothers to increase our knowledge
about each other and the mothers that live in our Village (neighborhoods). Mothers enjoyed
their swag bags that included a t-shirt and sweet treats coupled with a Mom-Fastic Scavenger
Hunt. We also shared our “lemonade s-heros in our Zoom Village Break out and with a
spirited competition played via KaHoot to test our knowledge on our Jack and Jill mothers and
famous black mothers. VP Lisa and Chaplain Kimberly shared how we will incorporate “My
Sister’s Keeper” initiative. The retreat was closed out with a toast to us as strong black women
and a comedy show performed by Chris Priester. The mothers of The Greater Fort
Lauderdale Chapter were re-charged and geared up to have a successful 2020-21 Program
Year!
