MCU LIBRARY

5.2 COLLECTION POLICY
The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance for staff and students involved in

delivering this vision for the future of the library’s collections.
• The library collection is guided by the Library Policy and Library Collection

Development Code of Practice.
• This policy is to ensure that the Library's resources are aligned with the research

strategies of the library.
• This set of guidelines is used by the library staffs in developing and maintaining the

collections that matches the research profiles of all disciplines of the entire library
community.
• It will also help users to understand better the reasons behind the library’s decision on
the selection and purchasing of library materials.

Purpose of collection policy
The quality of library collections is fundamental to the library’s success in learning

and research. The vision for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Library envisaged
the provision of:
• Seamless access to high quality content in support of learning, teaching and research
• Physical collections that reduce in size as digital alternatives are provided
• Collections that are well managed and edited to ensure currency and value, with the

focus on access rather than storage
• Retention policies that focus mainly on preserving, digitizing and promoting unique

collections of archives and heritage collections

Policy statement

Resources are acquired for the collections on the basis of their relevance to the
library’s learning and research. The library will:

• Work with library staffs to identify relevant materials and add them to the collections;
• Make resources available in electronic format, maintaining printed collections where

appropriate;
• Provide access to resources in the most appropriate and cost effective way;
• Not exclude material from the collections on the grounds of ethnicity, gender, sexuality,

or the religious or political views of the author(s).

Selection of resources

The library aims to provide sufficient copies of, or electronic access to, items on
reading lists. The Reading List Policy1 sets out how the library aims to achieve this goal.

• Textbooks and Monographs
The Marvel Cinematic Universe library will consider purchasing textbooks and
monographs recommended by the academic staffs or students of the nearest university
campus in the library area where they are relevant to current learning, teaching and
research, can assist academic staff in keeping up-to-date with developments in their
subjects, and can encourage students to study a wide range of relevant material in line with
the aims of the learning and teaching strategy.

• Journals
The library regularly reviews the newspaper subscriptions to achieve cost-effectiveness in
the areas of learning, education and research. Where appropriate, the library must purchase
electronic access and usually retain printed papers only when there is no digital connection.
It is proposed that existing journal titles must be cancelled as new subscriptions are
required to pay for them.
96 | M A R V E L C I N E M A T I C U N I V E R S E L I B R A R Y

• Theses and dissertations
The rules of the university allow the applicant who has been awarded a research award to
deposit a dissertation, document or portfolio at the University of Salford's Institutional
Repository (USIR).2 Dissertations and projects are collected only with the exception of
undergraduate and taught postgraduates.

• Other formats
The library will collect materials in other formats including, but not limited to,
DVD, CD, streaming media, audio collections, images, learning resources and other digital
objects where they are relevant to current learning, and research.

Classification
Call Number:

Each of the library material has a call number. The call number represents the
location of the material on the shelf. It comprises the following components:
• Subject
• Subject Subdivision
• Subject Subdivision by area, format, etc
• Number based on the main entry
• Publication date
• Copy Number

Information Literacy Skill

Information literacy is the ability to "recognize when information is needed
and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."
In addition to the reading and writing literacy in which libraries play such an
important role, information literacy is a vital skill that libraries promote in
communities.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Library support information literacy for adults
and youths by providing programs such as computer training and teach information
literacy skills every day at information desks. Showing a library user how to access
articles in databases, evaluate web sites, use the Dewey Decimal system, or even to
use the index at the back of a book all provide opportunities to teach information
literacy skills.

RFID Technologies

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is being use in MCU library as theft
detection systems. RFID is a based system move beyond security to become
tracking systems that combine security with more efficient tracking of materials
throughout the library, including easier and faster charge and discharge,
inventorying, and materials handling.

RFID is a combination of radio-frequency-based technology and microchip
technology. The information contained on microchips in the tags affixed to library
materials is read using radio frequency technology regardless of item orientation or
alignment (i.e., the technology does not require line-of-sight or a fixed plane to read
tags as do traditional theft detection systems) and distance from the item is not a
critical factor except in the case of extra-wide exit gates. The corridors at the
building exit(s) can be as wide as four feet because the tags can be read at a distance
of up to two feet by each of two parallel exit sensors.
Advantages of RFID systems are:

1. Rapid check-out / check-in
The use of RFID reduces the amount of time required to perform circulation
operations. The most significant time savings are attributable to the facts that
information can be read from RFID tags much faster than from barcodes and that
several items in a stack can be read at the same time. While initially unreliable, the

119 | M A R V E L C I N E M A T I C U N I V E R S E L I B R A R Y

anti-collision algorithm that allows an entire stack to be check-out or check-in now
appears to be working well.

2. Simplified users self-check-out / check-in
For users using self-check-out, there is a marked improvement because they do not
have to carefully place materials within a designated template and they can check
out several items at the same time. User self-check-in shifts that work from staff to
users. Staff is relieved further when readers are installed in book-drops.

3. High-speed inventorying
A unique advantage of RFID systems is their ability to scan books on the shelves
without tipping them out or removing them. A hand-held inventory reader can be
moved rapidly across a shelf of books to read all the unique identification
information. Using wireless technology, it is possible not only to update the
inventory, but also to identify items which are out of proper order.

4. Automated materials handling
Another application of RFID technology is automated materials handling. This
includes conveyer and sorting systems that can move library materials and sort
them by category into separate bins or onto separate carts. This significantly
reduces the amount of staff time required to ready materials for re-shelving.

5. Long tag life
Finally, RFID tags last longer than barcodes because nothing meets them. Most
RFID vendors claim a minimum of 100,000 transactions before a tag may need to
be replaced.

7.0 FACILITIES
Learning Lounge

A learning lounge is a place where kids migrate between class and after school. It’s
a place where kids want to be (and be more comfortable than standing around their lockers
or sitting in hallways). These areas are natural environments that foster student
collaboration, as well as personal study time.

MCU Library provided learning zones that help isolate activities. For example, a
collaboration zone is dedicated to project learning and group discussions. A social learning
zone is dedicated to student interaction, and an individual study zone provides space for
quieter activities, like individual study and research. A well-designed and furnished
learning commons can accommodate all learning (and learning styles) simultaneously. For
administrators, learning commons help maximize a building’s footprint.
