YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ......... My Visit to an Orphanage In my summer break , we all decided to spend some time with orphan children . An orphanage house has children of various ages who either have no family or have lost their families in natural calamities. The home usually has a care-taker who monitors the children of the orphanage and a few helpers to take care of the residents. A visit to an orphanage is a life-changing experience as it is filled with emotions and sentiments. I had an opportunity to visit an orphanage with my mother and my brother. The orphanage house was situated in the outskirts of the city and was close to the national highway. It was a two-storey building with a garden. There was a small girl who was peeking through the window on the first floor when we opened the gate. We had brought with us food, blankets, drawing books, crayons, pencils etc. which we distributed amongst the children. They were ecstatic to have food from outside and were even more elated when they received the stationary from us. We had one on one conversation with everyone. Later, I went over to a small girl, about 6 years of age, who was sitting at the corner of the room staring at the glass window. I introduced myself and took a seat beside her. She greeted me with a smile and gave me a toffee which she had in her bag. She told me how her parents drowned in the flood which swept away their home and everything they had. I talked with her for quite some time and then gifted her set of drawing books, story books and crayons and she promised to paint something for me. The visit to the orphanage was a fulfilling experience for me as I came back home with not only memories but also some valuable lessons learnt that we must appreciate what we have . When I reached home, I ran straight to my grandmother and hugged her tight saying that I loved her very much and also my mother and father. She held me tight with teary eyes. AKUL DEWAN VI - SUTLEJ

YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ......... AI Dystopia: The Dark Side of Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undoubtedly revolutionized various aspects of our lives, offering numerous benefits and opportunities. However, there is a growing concern about the potential emergence of an AI dystopia—a bleak future where advanced technology becomes a source of oppression and suffering. One of the primary concerns is the potential of AI to automate jobs on an unprecedented scale. As AI continues to advance, there is a fear that it could render a significant portion of the obsolete workforce, leading to widespread unemployment and economic inequality. Furthermore, the concentration of power in the hands of a few dominant AI systems poses a significant risk. If these systems fall into the wrong hands or are manipulated, they could be used for malicious purposes, such as surveillance, control, or even warfare. The lack of proper regulations and safeguards could amplify these risks, allowing AI to become a tool of oppression rather than empowerment. AI also raises ethical concerns, particularly regarding privacy and data security. The collection and analysis of vast amounts of personal data by AI systems raise questions about the erosion of privacy and the potential for abuse. Moreover, the biases inherent in AI algorithms can perpetuate discrimination and deepen societal divisions. To prevent an AI dystopia, it is crucial to establish robust governance frameworks and ethical guidelines. Striking a balance between innovation and responsible AI development is paramount. Investments in education and retraining can help ensure a smooth transition in the job market, and transparency in AI systems can foster trust among users. By addressing these concerns proactively, we can harness the potential of AI while minimizing the risks, steering clear of the dystopian future that haunts our imagination. It is our collective responsibility to shape AI's trajectory and ensure it remains a force for good, serving humanity's best interests. ANAV SHAH X - FUJI
From Sci-Fi to Reality: Living Among the Stars “Across the sea of space, the stars are other suns” - Carl Sagan, Cosmos Space. Colonisation. Combine these two and you have a science fiction writer’s dream. You have an astronaut’s quest. You have humanity’s only protection from extinction. Space colonisation has been a hot topic in the last couple of decades, and we move closer towards it every day with the help of advancements in astronautics, robotics, astrophysics, rocket propulsion, design and medicine. In this article, we will delve into the possibilities, space programs and effects of space colonisation on human beings and discover the road to make this fictional dream into a reality. NASA’s continuous missions of rotating teams of astronauts, scientists and medical professionals on the ISS (International Space Station) have provided us with vast amounts of important data to help us realise the problems and effects of space on human beings. There have been various projects and missions on earth as well to test the endurance of humans in space. All these efforts tell us the pros and cons of the tempting prospects of space colonisation. But what are the possibilities of this becoming a reality? Interplanetary travel: The crewed/uncrewed travel between planets in a single planetary system like our solar system is called interplanetary travel. However, going to even the closest planet Mars, we need advanced propulsion technology, the systems or methods used to generate the force needed to move an object/vehicle through air, water or space. Terraforming: The possibility of transforming the atmosphere, climate and surface conditions to make them more earth-like is terraforming. This kind of advanced technology is still a concept of the near future. The duration of terraforming can vary from 50 years to 10 million. The most likely candidate for terraforming in our solar system would be Mars, as per the distance, current conditions and distance from the sun. O’Neil Cylinders: These are large, rotating space habitats that can sustain humans by simulating gravity (centrifugal force due to rotation) and providing self-contained ecosystems. To understand this, imagine those big spaceships you see in Sci-Fi movies with the rotating chambers. To be continued … YOUNG MINDS AT WORK .........
These were the possibilities. But how do they become possible? There are multiple programs that NASA and other space organisations have run and are currently running, such asArtemis Program: It is a mission led by NASA, aiming to take humans to the moon by 2024 and setting up a sustainable lunar presence, which could serve as a steppingstone for future space colonisation efforts. SpaceX Starship: The private company SpaceX is developing Starship, a fully reusable spacecraft with the goal of enabling affordable and frequent access to space, including potential Mars colonisation missions. Lunar Gateway: A collaborative project led by NASA, involving partners such as ESA, to create a space station in lunar orbit that would facilitate lunar surface access and support long duration missions. These were the programs. But why are we doing this? There are many pros and cons of living among the stars, some of them beingExpansion of human civilisation: Space colonisation could extend human presence beyond earth, allowing us to establish new societies and explore the potential for human expansion in the cosmos. Resource utilisation: Establishing colonies on other celestial bodies could enable resource extraction and utilisation, potentially providing access to rare minerals and energy sources. Preservation of humanity: Space colonisation offers the potential for creating offworld backup habitats to ensure the survival of our species in the event of a catastrophic event on earth. It is important to note that while these programs and possibilities exist, space colonisation is a complex and long-term endeavour that requires significant technological advancements, international collaboration and careful consideration of ethical, legal and environmental factors. No one thought we could touch the moon. We did. No one thought we could touch mars. We did. Now, many people don’t believe in the concept of space colonisation, and that we’ll be able to do it. We will. ALANKRITA VERMA VIII - COLORADO YOUNG MINDS AT WORK .........

Good Afternoon ma’am, Hope this email finds you well. Firstly, I would like to congratulate you and the Lotus Valley team for organising such an amazing Scholar Badge ceremony on 14th July for grade X and XII. Every time we walk out of these school events with a new perspective and respect for the School , the management, administration and the staff. Dear Principal Ma’am, I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the Investiture ceremony held at LVIS Gurugram today, May 18. I got the opportunity to attend the ceremony as my daughter, Amaira Garg of Grade VII Tapti, was entrusted as a Lotus Samaritan. I cannot express in words how inspired I am after listening to you, Dr. Chona ma’am and the current and former students. The collective wisdom that was shared is more than anything I can find in a book or a TED talk! I can only imagine how inspiring and motivating it must be for the current students to witness the poise, growth, oratory skills and the overall personality of the Student committee members that was on display today. Learning never stops, and I certainly took a few life lessons - laughter being one of them! Thank you, Principal ma’am, for being the leader that you are and guiding the students into becoming wonderful human beings. Best regards, Nishant Garg F/o Amaira Garg, VII Tapti Mail of Appreciation by Nishant Garg
Dear Ma’am, Hope you are doing well! I am writing this email to show my gratitude towards the dedication, care and love you put into teaching our child. Yuvaan has been a learner since Pre Nursery in this school only. However the discipline towards his study he has learned in Grade 2 and that too in just 2 months is commendable. Till Grade 1 he was not even able to tell what he did in school. Now he is sharing everything, he remembers not only what he did in school, but what the homework is. He doesn’t want to miss school, he looks forward to all the activities performed in class. And all this is happening because of your dedication and support towards him. I have been struggling with him till Grade 1, but now Yuvaan is the one who reminds me everything related to his school. I am really happy and satisfied with all the efforts you have put in to make Yuvaan a brilliant child. Thanks a lot Ma’am Regards Kratika Sharma Yuvaan’s mother Mail of Appreciation by Kratika Sharma
Dear Mam Hope you are fine. Really appreciate the process of feedback which allows parents to share genuine concerns / feedback openly. Since most of the experiences are very positive, I would first reflect on that. As parents, we am amazed each day with the awesome efforts put in my LVIS and its teacher under your pristine guidance and Arjun Mittal (X-Fuji) has really leant a lot & is maturing into a smart child, which reaffirms to us the perfect choice we made in LVIS for our child. Your focus on right development & diver skill building for children is unwavering, deeply appreciate that. One feedback I would like to make (have posted this on feedback section of the website also): It would be great if parents of children studying in school are strictly avoided from playing the role of a judge or jury in any event. This has been seen to allow personal bias to creep into events structured to operate with a lot of independence to reflect ethos & beliefs of LVIS. Unfortunately some parents use these opportunities to reflect their dislike for children whose performance on most aspects their wards are unable to match. Ending with a note of gratitude for excellent & well rounded development Arjun is getting each day at LVIS. Regards Yogesh Mittal 9811758077 Mail of Appreciation by Yogesh Mittal

With utmost focus on value-oriented teaching, discipline and life skills along with the academic and co-scholastic teaching has helped us put even more faith in the institution. A special mention of the Vice-Principal Ms. Ritu Jawa, who has always been approachable and a guiding force for us as parents as and when we needed. We thank her sincerely for helping our child feel comfortable in C block after the gap of 2 years of lock down. We would like to thank the Class Teacher Ms. Anupreet Kaur for her kind help in settling our ward in class during initial months and dealing with all our queries and anxieties with patience. Her method of teaching and making the Social Studies topics interesting for kids have really been beneficial in better understanding of the themes.
