Thai massage relies on two fundamental theories as a means of understanding illnesses and determining the principles and methods of treatment. 1. The Theory of Elements is the basis on which all things are understood as being made up of the four great elements according to Buddhist teachings. Although Traditional Thai massage is mainly a treatment method for illnesses caused by the wind, it is also related to other elements. 2. The Theory of Sen Prathan Sib explains that the wind (life energy) is distributed through the human body through invisible channels called sen (lines), 72,000 of which are said to exist. However, there are ten principal ones, known as Sen Sib or Sen Prathan Sib: Ida, Pingala, Sushumna, Kalathari, Sahasrangsi, Dwari, Chandabhusang, Rujam, Sukumang, and Sikhini. These lines radiate from the navel and run along fixed paths through different parts of the body. The wind flowing through these main channels can be felt as currents of sensation when pressure is applied to certain points along them. There are also points along other sen lines that, when being pressed or stimulated properly, also create similar sensation. Each year, the increasing number of foreigners who are interested in Nuad Thai come to Thailand for learning how to massage. It can be said that Nuad Thai is not only the intangible cultural heritage for Thai people but also for people worldwide as it has been registered in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The practice of Nuad Thai for healthcare has enhanced the family and community spirit of self-reliance and mutual help. Its practicality and simplicity - no need for medicines, supplies, or equipment - make it a healthcare method within reach of everyone. As a family activity, Nuad Thai exemplifies loving-kindness, a core value that has inspired and defined Thailand as a caring society. Massaging is a powerful act which allows family members and relatives to express love for each other as they inquire and touch to comfort and ease their loved ones’ body aches and pains. Those who are cared for feel grateful for the healing, and the family value of mutual care and support is further strengthened. As a community practice, Nuad Thai is a tradition of local wisdom which has passed down through generations and given locals pride in their own community’s identity, anchored in its history, cultural values, and capacity for sustaining livelihoods. By providing people in the community with a means to deal with their health problems, Nuad Thai has helped to mitigate a sense of powerlessness felt when they have to depend on government assistance and knowledge from outside. Moreover, it does not take too long to learn and develop the skills needed for practicing Traditional Thai massage in the community as a side job or a main occupation. With increased skills and experience, budding practitioners would find the job rewarding, for they would be proud of their role as healers, a dependable and accessible source of care for their own people. 227 NUAD THAI CELEBRATION, THE INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

Traditionally, massage healers in rural communities are mostly farmers who inherit the art through generations and practice it to help relieve other’s suffering rather than to make a living. It is a custom for them not to demand compensation for their services. Nonetheless, their patients voluntarily reward them with money, things or free labour out of gratitude, not on the basis of trade. Both healers and patients share the same belief that any positive outcomes of the healing are attributed to the ancestral teachers as the sources of their knowledge and ethics. Therefore, it is important for practitioners to always begin a massage with an invocation of the teachers and to conduct the annual waikhru ceremony to pay their respect and gratitudes to them. These rituals are essential elements of the tradition of passing on the healing art and providing practitioners with moral guidance for their personal and professional conduct. Nuad Thai, though closely associated with Buddhism and ethnic Thais, has been well-accepted and widely practiced by people of other faiths and ethnic groups due to its health benefits, accessibility, and the open-mindedness of Thai society. Although the healing arts were traditionally passed down among men, there have been no restrictions to women learning and practicing it. In fact, massage for women during pregnancy and postpartum period has been widely practiced by women in all regions. T h e r e v i v a l o f T h a i massage, initiated by civil society organizations, came to fruition owing to an instrumental role played by traditional doctor associations and a group of massage healers in training and systematizing the knowledge, with support from public health agencies committed to primary health care and community self-reliance. The appropriate use of research and knowledge management to address local communities’ health needs also contributed to the acceptance of Thai massage among local health workers. NUAD THAI AT A CROSSROADS : COMMUNITY, PROFESSION, AND BUSINESS This increased awareness helped bring about changes to the country’s health system. Thai massage has now been integrated into public health services, and its practitioners have been awarded a legal status, which provides a firm foundation for the profession to be further developed as part of Thai traditional medicine. Once used mainly by farmers, laborers and patients with musculo-skeletal conditions, Thai massage has now become a health option packaged in modern-looking forms for health seekers. The restoration and development of Traditional Thai massage during the past three decades has provided a lesson on the priceless values of ancient wisdom for the modern world. It is, however, an unfinished business. There still remain questions to be addressed. In view of the government’s emphasis on business rather the community and profession, how can we balance the growth of Nuad Thai among its three pillars for a common good? How can we safeguard the traditional values of Traditional Thai massage our ancestors handed down through generations and ensure their existence in the globalization with public, private, profession and community cooperation.
