John Milton John Milton was a great English writer of the 17th Century. Milton was also a great believer in liberty. Milton was born in Bread Street in London on 9 December 1608. His father, John, was a scrivener (a man who wrote contracts and other legal documents.) His mother was called Sarah. From the age of 12, he was sent to St. Paul’s School. In 1625, Milton went to Cambridge University. He was awarded a BA degree in 1629 and an MA degree in 1632. After leaving university, Milton continued studying at home. He also wrote poetry. In 1629, Milton wrote a poem called on The Morning of Christ’s Nativity. In 1634, a masque by John called Camus was performed. (In the early 17th Century, a masque was a form of entertainment for the rich. It involved drama, music and dance.) In 1638, a famous poem by Milton called Lycidas was published. In 1638-39, Milton travelled to France and Italy and he met Galileo. In 1639, Milton returned to England and he became a school teacher in London. In 1642, civil war began between the king and the parliament. John Milton was a strong supporter of freedom, so naturally, he supported the parliament. In 1642, Milton wrote pamphlets attacking episcopacy (the belief that the church should have bishops). In 1644, he wrote a pamphlet in favor of freedom of speech. Following the execution of King Charles I in 1649, John Milton wrote materials supporting the Commonwealth (the republican government that ruled from 1649 to 1660). Milton also worked for the government translating documents into Latin. Tragically, in 1652, Milton went blind. However, in 1667 his great work Paradise Lost was first printed. It deals with the rebellion of Adam and Eve against God and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. In 1671 another work by Milton, Paradise Regained was published. Meanwhile, Milton was married 3 times. John Milton died on 8 November 1674 aged 65. He was buried in St. Giles Church in Cripplegate, London. Today he is remembered as the greatest English writer of the 17th century. 200 Pathfinder English Reader 7 Approved by CDC, Nepal

Relative clauses are formed by using words like that, which, who, whose, why, when, where, etc. Look at these sentences: ” I like the boy who lives next door. (If I don’t say who lives next door’, then we don’t know which boy I mean.) ” He is the man who broke my umbrella. ” This is the school where I studied high school. ” There was a one-year guarantee card which came with the phone. ” He is a singer whose albums have sold millions. Types of relative clause There are two types of relative clauses. They are defining relative clauses and non-defining relative clauses. Defining relative clause A defining clause or essential clause tells us which specific person or thing we are talking about in a larger group of people or things. If a defining relative clause is removed, the meaning of the sentence changes significantly. A defining relative clause is not separated from the rest of the sentence by commas or parentheses. Examples: ” The woman who visited me in the hospital was my mother. ” The man who stole my money has been arrested. Non-defining clause A non-defining or non-essential clause gives us more and extra information about the person or thing we are talking about. If a non-defining relative clause is removed from a sentence, we lose some detail, but the overall meaning of the sentence remains the same. Non-defining relative clauses are always set off from the rest of the sentence with commas or parentheses. Examples ” My father, who is 80 years old, lives in the village. (In this sentence, who is 80 years old is extra information about my father. If we remove it from the sentence, the meaning of the sentence is not affected.) ” Elephants, which are the largest land mammals, live in herds. Pre-reading Activity ” Do you know any story that tells the importance of the mutual help? Tell your friends. While Reading Activity Read, find and discuss ” What idea put the lame man to the blind man to go to the forest? ” How did the lame man get his legs recovered? ” How did the blind man get his eye sight back? The Blind Man and the Lame Man One day a lame man asked his friend who was blind to go with him to the wood to hunt. “How can we do this?” asked the blind man. “You can’t walk and I can’t see.” “You may carry me on your back,” said the lame man, “and I will guide you.” “All right then,” said the blind man. He lifted the lame man onto his back and they set off for the wood. They were going on their way through the wood when the lame man saw a deer. He asked his friend, “Please, lower me to the ground. I want to kill the deer.” So did the blind man. He strung the bow and, when the zebra moved near him, he fired a poisoned arrow at it. The zebra fell down and died instantly. The blind man helped him to skin the deer. They took out the guts and kindled a fire to roast the meat. When they were eating the meat, the lame man was giving the toughest meat to his friend. The blind man asked his friend, Hey, give me a little of the tender meat.” But every time, it was the tough meat he got. Sometimes he couldn’t chew the meat and sometimes he couldn’t cut the meat with his teeth, but the more keenly he asked for tender meat, the tougher were the pieces he got. The blind man grew very angry for he recognised from the smell of the meat that it wasn’t the same quality of meat that the lame man and himself were eating. 236 Pathfinder English Reader 7 Approved by CDC, Nepal

Then the blind man was given a chunk of meat that was particularly tough. He gripped the meat with his teeth and began pulling strongly and shaking his head from side to side. While doing so, water and grit spouted out of his eyes. And for his surprise, he got his sight back again. He was so happy that he ran and jumped shouting at a loud voice. After that, he noticed that the meat was very tasty and that it wasn’t tough at all. “Why,” he asked, “were you giving me such tough meat?” “Because that sort of meat,” the lame man replied, “was good for your eyes. If I hadn’t done that, you wouldn’t have got your sight back again.” The man agreed that was right, but he wasn’t altogether pleased that a trick had been played on him. He thanked his friend and they continued eating the zebra meat. When they had finished eating, the man who had got his sight back said he wanted to pursue a hare and kill it. He picked up the bow and arrows and disappeared into the wood. He pretended he was in pursuit of a hare but what he intended to do was to play a trick on the lame man in return for what he had done to him. And this is what he did. Approved by CDC, Nepal Pathfinder English Reader 7 237

He lit a fire here and there around the place where the lame man was sitting. The fires burned wildly until they formed one big circle of flame around the lame man. Help me, friend! Help me! “Help me, friend!” he shouted at the top of his voice. “Help me!” But his friend paid no heed to him. He tried to struggle to his feet and to jump about here and there until at last he managed to jump over the fire. He was now able to use his legs and he ran for two days without resting. On the third day, he met his friend. “Why,” he asked, “did you light that fire around me?” “I wanted to restore the use of your legs to you,” he replied. They were both very pleased now that they had been so inventive as to be able to cure their ailments. They went home together and told the people and their own children how it had happened. And people have been telling this story from that time until today 238 Pathfinder English Reader 7 Approved by CDC, Nepal
