Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths”. I congratulate the Principal, Staff and students of Somerville International School, in excelling in all areas of school life, keeping God’s everlasting assurance that He is with us. With a stamp of originality and creativity, which is entirely their own, the school, under the dynamic leadership of the Principal and the staff, has shown great dedication and enthusiasm to reach great heights. One must view obstacles in school life, not as stumbling blocks, but as challenges, which will ultimately lead to excellence. Set goals which are high enough to motivate, not discourage. Above all, have faith in your abilities. Do remember, faith without action is a delusion. I quote Henry Ford: "If you think you can or if you think you can't, you are right”. With warm wishes, Ms. Mary George President Lott Carey Baptist Mission MS. MARY GEORGE MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT LCBM
"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it." - Malcolm X Dear All, It is my hope that in this magazine you will find a diverse array of articles, stories, and artwork that showcase the remarkable talent and dedication of our students and educators. Each page is a testament to the power of education and its ability to shape a brighter future for us all. As we turn the pages of this magazine, let us also turn our focus towards the future. Education is not just about the acquisition of knowledge; it is about nurturing character, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards others and the world around us. ''Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.'' Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) To our students, you are the future leaders and change-makers. As you explore the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, remember that the values instilled in you today will shape your path in the years to come. To our educators, your dedication and commitment to guiding our students towards excellence are truly commendable. Your impact extends far beyond the classroom, as you mould young minds and hearts. Let us, together, ignite the flame of curiosity and passion for learning, and continue to strive for a better, more compassionate world. I extend my deepest gratitude to the editorial team, contributors and all those involved in making this magazine a reality. Your efforts have not only enriched our school community but also set an example of what we can achieve when we work together towards a common goal. Thank you all for your support and encouragement. May this magazine serve as a source of inspiration and pride for our school for years to come. Mr. Thomas T. "Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, calibre and future of an individual. If people remember me as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honour for me". - APJ Abdul Kalam The academic year 2022-2023 had arrived and the newness of being back in school was slowly sinking in. The school buses rolled in and the students came out ready to be children again. The deathly silence of the quiet corridors of our schools now resounded with the voices of the students in the classrooms and the presence of the students on the playground, giving Principals and teachers many a joyous moment. The children could meet their friends, they could play games again, they could dance and sing and act on the stage for competitions, for enjoyment, for an opportunity to display their talents. They filled the playgrounds, shouted excitedly while basketing a ball on the court, or kicking a goal on the football fields, and above all, it was back to classroom-teaching and learning as it ought to be. There were smiles shared all around. The children had been given back their childhood. That was a welcome change for the teachers who had struggled to make online teaching as good as classroom teaching. I would like to thank the Principals and the teachers of all four of our Somerville Schools for giving their best to our students during the pandemic. They were no less than the hospital staff. They were our heroes whether at home, caring for their families, having sick family members, getting ill themselves and yet diligently, holding classes online. They ensured, by remote control, that the students continued to learn, to complete assignments and be prepared to be promoted to the next class. These were the challenges our staff grappled with, but they rose to the occasion. They took help from each other in lesson planning and sometimes, in just how to manage to give individual attention online-a humongous task. I wish to congratulate our schools for their good results in the board examinations in spite of the most difficult of situations. This last session has shown that we can overcome the most difficult of circumstances and come out victorious having fought the good fight. Yes, we have really learnt in the last two years what a ‘noble profession’ means in the true sense of the expression. It has put the self in the background and duty in the forefront. It has built the character of the teacher, the taught, the management and the parents. For you especially, our students, honour your mother and father and your teacher who help to build your character while teaching you all you need to know. We thank God for being with us through our trials and helping us to keep going, knowing that He is with us always. May God bless each one of you. May He be with our Principals, our staff, students and their parents in the days that lie ahead. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON & DIRECTOR MRS. D. A. TRESSLER
"Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students, and enthusiastic parents with high expectations." -Bob Beauprez I deem it a privilege to greet all of our valued readers in the matchless name of our Almighty Lord. We inhabit a globe where the dissemination of knowledge and information is at an astounding breakneck speed. We can utilise technological advancement for the enhancement of our institution, its teachers, its students and the society at large. Somerville Schools place an emphasis on nothing less than comprehensive achievement and are willing to pursue students' aspirations to fulfilment. Our first and foremost objective is to distinguish ourselves and translate that uniqueness into concrete gains for the student fraternity. Our students can express their talents and explore new aspects of their personalities at Somerville Schools. I can state without reservation that we at Somerville schools strive to foster ethical, cognitive, tangible, aesthetic and psychological growth of young minds, while also instilling in them an unshakable sense of self, a scholarly personality, and a commitment to serve their community and nation. All of our co-curricular and academic activities are designed not only to broaden information but also to nurture young minds who will eventually go on to be ambassadors of societal transformation in their fields and, ultimately, change the world towards an equitable and inclusive society. Finally, I'd like to express my gratitude to everyone here for their continuous support and commitment to this institution throughout the years. A heart of gratitude rejoices before God. A heart of gratitude is humble in praise. - Psalm 51:17 MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER LCBM MR. ABRAHAM MATHEW

Welcome aboard the 2nd edition of our school magazine ‘REWIND’. The year 2021 came with humongous challenges on a global level due to the pandemic. There was hardly any individual or any sphere spared by it. Yet, once again, it was proved that the human race is the most advanced race and can tackle any adversity, as we are gifted with immense grit and resilience along with the ability to adapt, adopt and change ourselves. It is our attitude that determines our success or failure. The right attitude is to keep calm and continue to persevere. Crossing over all the barriers, the students and staff at Somerville International School pushed themselves beyond their limits to ensure that they gave their best to achieve the best by carving out a path of success even during the darkest of the dark times. Holding onto the glimmer of hope in the face of adversity, life at SIS continued to move along with grace and grandeur. Our school magazine is dedicated to all our students and staff who performed and excelled without getting despondent, making the most out of the situation. The SIS world connected on the virtual platform in the session 2021-22. Besides the normal teaching and learning , the virtual platform also abounded with myriad activities, events and assemblies which showcased the versatility and potential of our students and staff. All of it has been extensively covered and presented in the magazine. Flipping through its pages, one would be completely taken in with awe and appreciation. It is not just a magazine, but it encompasses the pristine soul and the indefatigable spirit of the students and staff at SIS. The year 2022 saw the world return to a state of normalcy with the magnitude of the pandemic reducing everywhere. It was time for the students to go back to their classrooms and learn with their peers, helping, sharing, laughing, playing together, unlike the times when they were confined in their homes. The sprawling campus and playground once again became alive with their footprints and the sound of their laughter. The change was welcomed with open arms. What an action packed session it was! The editorial board, led by the Head Editors- Malaika Khan, Vidushi Srivastava, Ishaan Chandra, Manaswi Aggarwal and Sameeha Khan along with the sub-editors, namely, Anwesha Chandra, Aadya Sharma, Evania, Ananya Koul, Yubika Ravi, Prapti Jain and Haadiya Hasan, has worked painstakingly under the able guidance of our teachers Ms. Alveera Zaidi, Ms.Nidhi Sharma, Ms.Devika and Ms. Manju, amalgamating all the information and putting them up together in our magazine. Each page has a story to tell and an emotion to convey, which has to be felt as the pages are turned over. The pictures, the articles, the drawings and most importantly the designing of the magazine including the cover page and the inside pages are the result of the hard work and meticulous planning of our students, headed by Sameeha Khan (Student Art Editor) of class XII B, under the exemplary guidance of the Art teacher, Ms. Apoorva Sharma, Ms. Shaili Singh and Mr. Jacob Shawn. I would like to offer my profound thanks to our school Principal, Ms. Marilyn Thomas, who has been there with all of us at every step in the planning of the school magazine. Her invaluable advice and suggestions helped us in making this magazine possible. I consider myself truly blessed and honoured to be a part of this supremely talented editorial board as the Editor-in-chief. The students and the teachers have created and designed this school magazine with love and ingenuity. It is our sincere hope that you enjoy and appreciate our effort as you go through its pages embarking on a journey through all the curricular and co-curricular activities and accomplishments that happened at SIS in the sessions 2021-22 and 2022-23. Wishing all a happy reading. Message from the Editor-in-Chief, Rewind Ms. Tarannum Hasan

Working on the school magazine this year was indeed an unforgettable journey. We were collecting, consolidating and editing numerous articles and write-ups, while still battling the pandemic. Nevertheless, it was a great learning experience which helped me hone my technical skills. It gave me an opportunity to learn from my mistakes and grow into a better version of myself. The whole editorial board, along with the teachers and other school staff, worked tirelessly to bring the vision of the magazine to life. I am so grateful to have been a part of this year’s magazine. If ever given another chance to work on something like this again, I would take it up in an instant! Being the head editor in my last year at SIS, has been a rather nostalgic and memorable experience. It has empowered me to face the real world with an augmented proficiency in editing and articulation. Coordinating everything online was a tedious task, owing to the pandemic, but seeing the magazine taking shape fills me with pride and elation. This magazine is the end result of the hard work put in by the editorial board comprising teachers and the students. SIPS...A HUB OF ACTIVITIES (2021-22) The name of our school magazine is REWIND, and as I set myself on rewind mode to reminisce about the year that has gone by, I cannot help but exclaim to myself – “My, what a time it has been!” Since 2020, online learning has become the ‘new normal’. The pandemic compelled schools to close and take the support of technology to impart education. However, connecting with students via webcam and keeping them motivated continuously was not an easy task and a great challenge lay ahead of the preparatory school/SIPS teachers, who had to teach 3 & 4 year olds virtually, wherein half the strength – the Nursery students were first time school goers. Nevertheless, the teachers geared up and learned new technologies, devised innovative teaching methods and skills to: *Keep the online sessions interactive and engaging *Help the students achieve the outlined teaching and learning objectives as per the curriculum *Help students achieve the required skills in the cognitive domain *Enable the students to experience joyful learning The academic syllabi at SIPS were covered effectively on the virtual platform using different strategies such as PPTs, videos, songs, flashcards, live objects, interactive teaching tools like Tata ClassEdge and whiteboard, dramatisation, puppets, interesting reinforcement activities, etc. The students were also encouraged to look for related examples of the topic being taught in their homes and talk about the same in the online class. It is imperative for students to get acquainted with their creative instincts and kindle their imagination right from the beginning. Regardless of the pandemic induced restrictions, our students were given ample opportunities online for extra-curricular and co-curricular activities such as public speaking, rhyme recitation, enactment, role play, costume day, story narration, music, dance, aerobics, class assemblies, inter school competitions, etc. The SIPS students also put up year-end special presentations on topics of ‘Road Safety and Traffic Rules’ and ‘Moral Values’. They were also given the chance of planning and preparing for the school Diwali Assembly and took part in the school Christmas assembly too. All the aforementioned activities enabled the little ones to: *Develop creative expression and linguistic skills *Boost self confidence *Promote academic achievements *Bring forth innate talents *Enhance kinaesthetic skills *Nurture cultural values *Develop wholesome personalities With education taking the digital route, it was ensured that the Art & Craft activities do not take a back seat. It is a proven fact that Art & Craft work boosts creativity and innovation, develops motor skills and enhances concentration level in children. From the most basic activity of colouring to finger printing, palm printing, collage making, vegetable printing, origami, creating models of farmhouse, tear & paste, etc. - our little ones did it all! The students were motivated and lauded for their positive effort and participation in the numerous online co-curricular activities by being awarded with ‘Certificates of Appreciation’. I can surely say with conviction that the students and teachers alike waded through these testing times successfully, coming out with flying colours. The various online class and activity photographs stand testimony to the fact how well the little ones adapted and adopted the new scenario, enjoying and becoming resilient at the same time. And as these Nursery and KG students move FORWARD, they will definitely PAUSE sometime in their lives to REWIND and recall with a smile the unusual experience of their lives – Online Learning! At SIPS, we provide opportunities for children to understand that school is a place for learning. The early years are the most significant years for growth, development and learning. The curriculum has been designed keeping in mind the development of different abilities like physical and motor development which includes gross and fine motor control. Gross motor control includes coordination, body balance and movement e.g., running, jumping, throwing a ball etc. Fine motor skills which involve eye hand coordination e.g., holding pencil or crayon, picking up things between finger and thumb etc. Language Development which includes written skills, listening and comprehension, oral skills, vocabulary building, etc. Cognitive Development which includes pre-number and number concepts as well as knowledge related to problem solving, comparison, critical thinking etc. Creative Development like Art & Craft activities help in exploring the creative side of children. Social and emotional Development:- Skills like cooperation, expression of feelings, social relationships, values etc. are addressed in the early years keeping in mind that it would shape a child's behaviour and attitude in life. The Educational experiences, imparted at SIPS in the session 2022-23, provided balance and variety to the mental, spiritual, social, and physical activities, as the child’s world of awareness shifted from the online mode of teaching back to the offline mode in the school. Students were introduced to basic reading skills through shared reading experiences, rhymes, poems, classic stories etc. Special assemblies provided the opportunity to students to develop their confidence by speaking up and participating in various other co-curricular activities like tear & paste, paper folding, drawing , dance, Indian music, and Western music. Assemblies on themes like Modes of Transport, Save the Planet Earth, Diwali, Christmas, Independence Day, etc. helped to sensitise the young minds, thus instilling in them a sense of responsibility towards their surroundings. We believe in empowering and equipping our students for a constantly changing world. With this belief, SIPS carries on its journey towards the holistic development of children so that they can be responsible global citizens when they grow up!
