Empty halls and corridors and desolated classrooms, devoid of all activity, was a truly depressing sight to see. Alas! that’s how things were during the lockdown, when people were stuck up in their homes. I can clearly recall the first day, when I went to school after the pandemic. Filled with uncertainty about what awaited me, I stepped foot inside the school building, only to be met with something pleasant instead. The familiar buzzing of the corridors and chattering from the classrooms, filled me with immense nostalgia. For a moment, the horrors of the past two years slipped away from my mind completely, as time rewound itself to an era filled with sprightliness and joy. - Sameeha Khan 11 B BACK TO SCHOOL The years 2020 and 2021 were very hectic in various aspects, be it economically, socially or psychologically. The emergence of a worldwide pandemic shocked the world and its working completely. Governments were forced to lockdown cities and commercial activities in order to slow down the spread of the disease. During this whole period of lockdown, when people were confined to their homes, the online sphere started expanding more as people moved towards their devices to entertain themselves. Because of this lockdown, online mode of learning was introduced by the educational institutions as an alternative due to students not being able to attend school physically. When I first heard of this mode of attending school, I had doubts regarding it as I thought it wouldn’t be taken seriously by the students. But at the same time, I was looking forward to learning lessons while sitting comfortably at home. Initially attending online lessons was really exciting. The teachers worked really hard to make the classes interesting and engaging. However, I started missing the live action that happens in a class and I genuinely wished for offline mode to be brought back. I preferred sitting in a classroom and facing the teachers rather than staying at home. That's why I was really elated to know about the shift from online back to offline. I really longed the feeling and atmosphere of being in a classroom during lockdown. - Eeran Mutum XII -A
Silent Corridors and Classrooms... Missing all the action!
...have got their souls back! Back in action!
There’s an angel in my pocket, Who is watching over me. Just a little voice deep down inside, That I can hear but not see. I wish that I could let her out, So that everyone could see. Because we have the greatest secrets, Many things she shares with me. She whispers little things to do, To make my parents glad. And warns me when there’s something, That I want to do is bad. Oh! I wish that I could see her, Not just hear her talk to me. Just a little voice deep down, That I can hear but not see. Myra II - A My mother’s name is Mrs. Ruchi Anand Pal. She is very beautiful. She has long hair. She cooks tasty food. My mother is a superwoman. I love my mother. Eehan (I-A) My mother’s name is Ms. Sneha Shinjani. She is very beautiful. She has short hair. She plays with me. She works at HCL Technologies. We love each other. Aashi Bajaj (I-B) My mother’s name is Ms. Sona Sharma. She is very beautiful. She has long hair. She loves me a lot. She is the best mother in the world. Aryaki (I-C) MY MOTHER AN ANGEL IN MY POCKET
MY FATHER, MY INSPIRATION I am inspired by a lot of people, but my biggest inspiration is my father. For me, he is the best person in the world. He has taught me about the layers of the earth. He helps me with mathematics and with my homework too. Sometimes we even play chess. My father is a lawyer. He is very intelligent and honest. I love him very much. I love my mother very much too. Everyday she tells me a beautiful story. She also helps me with my studies. My parents take very good care of me. When I grow up, I want to be like them. I am grateful to God for giving me such wonderful parents. KAVEESH III-A
I AM INSPIRED BY… Whenever I'm asked about the person who has inspired me the most, I always respond with a simple word: Mom. In the journey of my life, she has been there for me and with me at every step. If I have a question about anything or when I have a doubt on what to do, my mom is the first person I turn to. She is my best friend and she loves me unconditionally. She inspires me to become successful in life and most of all, she wants me to become an honest and warm-hearted person. I will always admire her and she will always remain my biggest inspiration in the whole wide world. AMNA III-D MY FATHER My father is my greatest inspiration and I respect and value him a lot. Whenever he is around, it always feels like nothing can go wrong. He is multi-talented and his versatility is revealed through random instances that take place in our life everyday. For example, we recently found out that he knows how to repair laptops after ours developed a snag. Such talent definitely complements his job as a software engineer. Being a one-trick pony doesn’t work in the ever-changing field of computer science. He always encourages me to hone my talents and be the best I can be. That is why I have a lot of books about space since my dad encourages me to advance my curiosity about deep space and turn it into a skill. He always helps me whenever I feel stuck on a problem and helps me when I am making a decision. These are the many reasons I am inspired to be like my father, a man who is always very calm and collected in every situation in his life. FAAZ III-D MY MOTHER, MY INSPIRATION Everyone has someone important in their lives, who inspires them. For me that person is my mother. My mom is my inspiration. She is an epitome of love, care and sacrifice. She is the most precious gift of God for me. She understands me and helps me in solving my problems. My mother is my best friend. She does a lot of hard work. She wakes up early in the morning and manages everything perfectly. I share all my secrets with her. She cooks delicious food for me. She is a great motivator and she always encourages me by telling me to believe in myself. She says that it is this belief which would help me touch the sky. I pray to God to give her good health and a long life. AAHANA III-A
Rain Rain Come Again… Rainy season is the most amazing season of the year. It is the season of joy and happiness. The rainy season comes after the heat of May and June. The Earth turns green and starts to sing with happiness. Rain helps the farmers in growing their crops. I love to jump in the puddles and pools that form during the rainy season. My favourite cartoon character is Captain America. He is the first Avenger. He is the most intelligent, the strongest, the bravest and the most honest soldier. He knows Martial Art and Kung-Fu too. His shield is indestructible. When I grow up, I want to be like him. Kabir Koul II-A My Favourite Cartoon My favourite cartoon is ‘Tom and Jerry’. Tom is a cat and Jerry is a mouse. Tom runs after Jerry to catch him. Jerry lives in a small hole in Tom’s house. Jerry takes all the food from Tom’s kitchen. He runs fast and teases Tom. Still they both enjoy each other’s company. I watch this cartoon daily and laugh a lot. Though Tom and Jerry fight a lot, they are good friends at the same time. That’s what true friendship means. Real friends remain strong despite their differences. Kiaan Kaushik II-A Aryaman II-A

On 25th February, 2023, Somerville International School organised the annual sports meet – EXTRAVAGANZA 2022-23 from classes Nursery to 3. The day was filled with excitement, thrills and cheers. No programme worth its salt can ever take place without seeking the blessings of the Almighty. Hence, after the special opening prayer, the torch was lit and the chief guest declared the meet open. Students were dressed in amazing attires portraying the evolution of mankind from the wild jungle era to the discovery of the wheel, from the farmers’ upliftment to the Independence of our nation, from the retro era to the disco age and from the 1st generation computers to the accomplishment of man travelling in space. Students and parents enjoyed the dance of Nursery kids on jungle beats as much as they appreciated and applauded the performances of K.G. students on hippie, twist and disco dances, which were breathtaking. Students of Classes 1, 2 and 3 displayed their talents showcasing the glimpses of development of our country in various fields. Folk dances from all the four corners of our country did not just entertain us, but made us feel so proud of the unity we have in such diversity. Various 50m, 100m and relay races were organised for the students of Classes 1, 2 and 3. Nursery kids participated in the worm squirm obstacle race, wherein they wriggled and ran. On the other hand, K.G. kids participated in the twist and roll race. Students of Class 1 performed different activities starting from gymnastics, races and dance. Through the dance, they tried to show the millennium era, how technology evolved, and how social media played an essential role in our lives. The students got a great platform to showcase their talents through different activities. The students of Class 2 dressed in the attire of Indian farmers and settlers showcased how Indians have played a vital role in shaping the world we live in today. Class 2 students also participated with full vigour in the hurdle race. Class 3 students started off with march-past and showcased their exuberant energy with three performances to their credit. These students also proved their mettle with Taekwondo performance. The parents were awestruck how these little gems, full of vigour, showcased their talent in board-breaking, plate-breaking, marble-breaking and fire-breaking and besides, forming pyramids of the highest order was exceptional indeed. The gracious presence of the guests, the enthusiasm of the parents and the energy and sportsmanship of the students made the EXTRAVAGANZA 2022-23 a grand success. EXTRAVAGANZA 2023

Teachers' Day Assembly Teachers play an extraordinary part in the lives of children during the formative years of their development and the importance of teachers is something that cannot be understated. A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite imagination and instil love for learning. They mould the life of their students with love, affection, dedication and hard work. The Teachers’ Day was celebrated with great fervour and exuberance at Somerville International School, Noida, on the virtual platform as well as offline, to honour the hard work of its teachers and staff. The students presented a special assembly to express their sincere gratitude to their teachers. The students of SIPS began the celebrations with amazing performances which left the audience spellbound. It was followed by a special message from our students for our respected Principal, Ms. Marilyn Thomas, thanking her for all that she does for them, for the school and the staff of SIS. Students from the Junior, Middle and Senior School classes expressed their profound love, respect, acknowledgement and recognition for the hard work put in by their teachers for their holistic development. Mishika Jane’s (Class XII) musical rendition on the song ‘Stand By Me’ by Ben E. King was truly par-excellence. The highlight of the assembly was the interview session wherein the students posed questions to their teachers and got to know a few fun facts about them. The assembly concluded with a game-session which comprised nine questions that had to be answered within five seconds. Students awarded marks to the teachers for correct answers. The session was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students and the teachers. The Junior school put forth a mesmerising dance performance which was an amalgamation of vigour and dexterity. This dance slowly transitioned to a Flash Mob on a medley of songs. Its exuberance filled the room with a thunder of applause. The celebration also included an activity called the Hand Tree painting activity. The assembly concluded with the Vote of Thanks. The entire celebration brought a new hope for teachers to rejoice their teaching journey. A day dedicated to all the teachers. VIRTUAL & OFFLINE CELEBRATION
The exhilaration and celebratory spirit that Diwali brings is unmatchable. The Festival of Lights came alive when the Pre-Primary children of Somerville International School conducted special assemblies on Diwali . The assembly commenced with a meaningful prayer highlighting the message of Diwali, invoking God’s blessings. It was followed by an address by the Principal, Ms. Marilyn Thomas, wherein she shared greetings and blessings with everyone and urged the children to be sensitive towards the environment by celebrating a clean and cracker free Diwali. To add to the festive fervour, a beautiful hymn “This Little Light of Mine” was presented by the Kindergarten children, emphasising the importance of maintaining the goodness gifted to us by God. The students of class Nursery enlightened everyone with a brief description of the festival. They spoke a few lines to share information about why and when the festival is celebrated. The students of class Nursery showcased the spirit of Diwali through a mesmerising dance performance on the song - “Jagmag Jagmag Aayi Diwali”. The dance performed in colourful costumes and set to foot tapping music, highlighted the spirit and cheer of the festival. The Kindergarten children presented a delightful skit to spread awareness about the harmful effects of fireworks and motivate their listeners to ensure a safe and environment-friendly Diwali. They showed concern for the ill effects of crackers and pledged to celebrate a Green Diwali by saying “NO TO CRACKERS”. The young choir comprising the Kindergarten children sang a melodious song - “Aayi Hai Diwali”. An endearing recitation of a short and lovely rhyme on Diwali by the tiny tots of class Nursery left the audience in awe. Festivals are not only meant for celebration but they are also an opportunity to educate our kids about the Indian culture and traditions, and schools hold upon themselves the responsibility to educate them about the festivals by engaging them in fun-filled activities. When children get involved in such activities, they use their creative instincts to exhibit different ideas, engaging and expressing themselves in their own unique ways. Many such art and craft activities like Lantern Making, Card Making and Diya Decoration held across classes Nursery to IX were also showcased as a part of the Diwali assembly. The assembly culminated with an enlightening song - “Light a Candle for Peace” and a spectacular dance performance on the song “Mere Tumhare Sabke Liye” by the Kindergarten students adding much exuberance and joy to the assembly. The assembly was a fine composition of dance, drama and music, aesthetically showcasing Indian traditions and values and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Diwali Assembly ART & CRAFT WORK AT DIWALI
Children's Day Assembly “Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of our nation and the citizens of tomorrow”. -Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru We were all children once and all of us share a common desire for the wellbeing of our children. In fact it has always been and will continue to be the most universally cherished aspiration of humankind. Children’s Day is a day dedicated to celebrating childhood and focuses on making the children feel extremely special. The day is also celebrated to pay tribute to the legendary freedom fighter and the first Prime Minister of India, popularly known as ‘Chacha Nehru’. The occasion is celebrated every year with grand splendour and fiesta at Somerville International School. A Special Assembly was conducted for children with an endearing presentation by the teachers comprising events - songs, skits and dance performances by teachers. Our Principal, Ms. Marilyn Thomas, greeted and wished the children on the special day and spoke about how children hold the key to a better and more delightful world. This was followed by a number of performances to delight, entertain and regale the students. A soul-stirring rendition of the song ‘Thank God for Kids’ was performed by the teachers teaching the senior classes. It was followed by a Hindi song by the other teachers. The students enjoyed the scintillating dance performances by the teachers on peppy songs. The students thoroughly enjoyed the fun-filled assembly which their teachers had lovingly put up for them to show how special their children are. It was indeed a memorable day, not only for the children, but for everyone present. WE ARE THE FUTURE OF TOMORROW!

The theme for the occasion was Retro. The Blessing Ceremony began with a prayer followed by an address by Ms. Marilyn Thomas, our esteemed Principal, where she motivated and wished the students success and emphasised on the virtue of being ‘KIND’ in this unkind world.
