It was truly a learning experience by all means.

There is always a scope for improvement. Though in my case, had I had little idea about the
placement before hand, I would have prepared myself much better.

It took nearly a week to understand the new work place, by next week I began to contribute to
their system but by the third week when I was in a position to put forward my requirements as
a professional artist, it was very late. Nothing substantial could be done in the last week.

I was working with a social welfare organisation and that gave me an insight into the civil
society of the the United States. As per my interest in the social sphere, I think I had signi cant
exposure.

Since I work at the grass root level in India, I always felt that a fair and regular communication
between the civil society and policy makers will make the legislation better. My stay in
Cleveland, Ohio States, rea rmed my belief.

What new ideas and/or skills do you think you will use in your community as
a result of the program?

The organisation I was placed with worked in coordination with its partner organisations that
made their functioning very e cient. I am already in the process of collaboration with other
groups of people in India to make my project become more impactful and long lasting.

If there is something you hoped to learn or experience on this program, but
did not? If yes, please explain.

Yes. I sincerely hoped to work with the organisations engaged in artistic practices as a mean
for social and individual development. Due to no idea about my placement (, o cial move of
my organisation) and limited time period, I could not explore and engage as much as I had
expected.

Is there anything you did not learn in the pre-departure orientation that you
wish you had?

NO. I found pre- departure orientation were useful for the fellowship.

Do you think there is value in continued exchange programs for India and
Pakistan?

I strongly agree. In fact at my own level, I have been heading a traveling community art project
ARTOLOGUE: Art For All. Under this project I have already travelled to most states of India and
has a strong intentions to take this art to Pakistan. I believe strong connections between
common people and civil organisations will help reduce the political friction and myths.

What overall comments do you have about the exchange program?

It was a wonderful experience to visit the United States of America, to interact with policy
makers at key levels, to understand aspects of legislative processes, to experience American
hospitality and to make new friends from the USA, Pakistan and India.

What comments do you have about the overall program quality?

It was a well organized programme. I am satis ed with the quality of selection of participants
for the programme. I wish there would be increase in the number of participants from India and
Pakistan in the future. There is a need to ensure selection of participants from socially and
regionally marginalized sections from India for a better outcome of the programme in the long
term. Also, certain concrete deliverable should be there for the participants, either during the
programme of immediately after the programme.

Separation of power between Union and the states as well as autonomy of local government
bodies are the areas wherein I learnt a lot that will be useful for me to disseminate in my

I had very little idea about USA and this not only developed a sound understanding about the
USA but also helped me develop a critical analysis of systems in my own country. The best
practices learnt from USA will surely be helpful to resolve issues back home.

Has your understanding of the ways in which civil society can alter

Civil society is one of the most important component of any society especially USA where a
strong civil society is the catalyst for change. This fellowship helped us understand the way
civil society effects legislation and governance especially through direct and indirect ways.

What new ideas and/or skills do you think you will use in your community as
a result of the program?

I am working to develop a paper to elaborate three concepts I have learnt in USA i.e. Legislative
Services Commission, Environment Protection Agency and O ce of Inspector General. These
three areas I feel are very important for my country and I learnt a great deal about them from
our meetings in USA.

If there is something you hoped to learn or experience on this program, but
did not? If yes, please explain.

I feel more cultural visits should be included like visit to baseball game or a music show.

Is there anything you did not learn in the pre-departure orientation that you
wish you had?

Everything was very well covered and we were explained everything. I dont think anything was
left out.

Do you think there is value in continued exchange programs for India and
Pakistan?

Yes. It is very important rather I would suggest a SAARC program as well.

What overall comments do you have about the exchange program?

the exchange program and my placement was very well organized and well planned. I got
opportunity to understand all levels of legislative process in Ohio. Moreover, also got an
opportunity to understand working of other two pillars of state, Judiciary and Executive. We
also had meetings with different agencies, media and civil society organisations.

The opportunity of shadowing in Ohio parliament provided me a chance to work very closely
and understand legislative process.

Yes, the civil society in the US complements the legislative process. it is really good to note the
active role played by civil society in the US.

The program is very apt as per its design and timings. Since most of us were working
professionals, therefore, the duration of program is best as it could be managed. I also made
many friends from the US and India. This will surely promote friendship among three countries.

I am engaged in lobbying and advocacy work concerning personal laws of religious minorities
in Pakistan. The new ideas from the fellowship will help me to think and perform better in my
work.
