There are two main melanin pigments found in human hair – eumelanin and
pheomelanin. These pigments blend in varying amounts and proportions to form
all the hair colours that we see.
Eumelanin provides black and brown pigments and, therefore, determines
how dark hair is. Furthermore, when more of this pigment is present in
someone’s hair, it gives the overall hair colour a cool look, like ash.
Eumelanin pigments consist of all three primary colours – blue, red and
yellow.
Pheomelanin provides red and yellow pigments. This gives rise to warmer
colours in someone’s hair, like auburn, strawberry or gold.
Black and brown hair contains a lot of eumelanin. Red hair has large quantities
of pheomelanin.
Light blonde hair actually contains relatively little melanin – the pale yellow we
see is due to the keratin in the hair, rather than any pigment. White hair contains
little or no pigment at all.
The two main melanin pigments found in human hair.
Why Natural Hair Changes Colour
We can change our hair colour by choice by using hair dyeing products. Here, the
various chemical processes in hairdressing (like bleaching, tinting, neutralising) act
on the natural pigments to change the hair’s colour.
However, hair colour can change for a variety of other reasons that are not always
under our control, including:
Ageing can affect pigment production. Consequently, as we age, melanin
stops being made in our hair and, therefore, individual new hairs can grow
without pigment. This is why they are white. When white hair is mixed with
hair that still has colour, it creates a grey look – sometimes referred to as
“salt and pepper”.
151
Blonde children can sometimes see their hair darken when they are around
seven or eight years old, and go on to have dark hair in adulthood. The hair
darkens as melanin production increases.
Environmental factors can also impact hair colour. For example, humidity
and wind bring more oxygen to hair and this attacks the pigments in the hair.
Sunlight can then accelerate the process further. The blue pigments in the
hair are the weakest and disappear first. This leaves the warm undertones of
red and yellow showing through the hair. Our hair often lightens when on
beach holidays due to being exposed more to the combination of sun and
wind.
Health issues can contribute to premature greying. For example,
autoimmune thyroid disease, vitiligo, and ageing syndromes can lead to
greying hair.
Medication can alter natural hair colour. For example, certain drugs used to
prevent malaria can lighten hair, while some epilepsy drugs can darken it.
Pregnancy can darken light hair due to higher levels of hormones estrogen
and progesterone.
Describing Hair Colour
The hair colour we see consists of depth and tone. Hair also has an undercoat of
colour, called undertones, which come into play when we lighten or colour the
hair.
Depth or Level
Depth or level simply refers to how light or dark the base colour of the hair is.
There are 10 main levels talked about in hairdressing:
Numbers 1-5 are brown shades – black, darkest brown, dark brown,
medium brown, and light brown;
Number 6-10 are blonde shades – dark blonde, medium blonde, light
blonde, very light blonde, and lightest blonde.
See the chart below for the hair colour numbering. All are classed as neutral
shades.
152
Tone
Tone refers to the colours we see in the hair, be they natural colours or artificially
added. Tonal colours are classed as warm, neutral or cool:
Warm tones have reds, yellow and orange in them and are in colours such
as strawberry blonde, copper and chestnut brown.
Neutral tones have a balance of warm and cool pigments in them.
Cool tones have blues and greens in them and are often referred to as ash
tones.
The tonal quality of a hair tint is often given as part of the colour’s description.
For example, intense red, honey blonde, rich copper, light beige blonde, and deep
chocolate are all descriptions that give us a clue as to what the finished colour will
be.
There is also the ICC colouring system, with each tone being given a specific
number.
Undertones
Natural hair has an underlying warm tone, dictated by the amount of the pigment
pheomelanin found in the hair. Consequently, undertone can affect the final colour
result when dyeing hair.
153
Dark hair has more pheomelanin present, which creates a red
undertone. Blondes have less, resulting in a more yellow undertone.
The undertone becomes more evident when hydrogen peroxide is used to lighten
the hair. The undertone also shows through when hair is naturally lightened from
exposure to the elements.
Pheomelanin is slowly oxidised during colouring and can produce those difficult-
to-remove golden and orange tones in the hair. When dark hair is bleached
sufficiently, it will go from having a red tinge to orange, then yellow and, finally,
white as the pheomelanin breaks down.
The underlying warm pigment that all natural hair colours have, from red for
darker hair and yellow for lighter hair. ICC is the International Colour Chart
system.
Correcting Unwanted Tones
Correcting tones in hair needs an understanding of colour theory, as well as
knowing what products to use and application techniques. The colour wheel is an
easy way to see what colours are used to neutralise – simply look at the colour
opposite.
To neutralise an unwanted tone, the opposite colour on the colour wheel is used.
For example, to remove a gold brassy look from blonde hair, we use a purple
shampoo or a mauve ash toner to knock out the unwanted yellow.
If the brassiness is more orange, then a blue-based product would be used.
Similarly, if the hair has a green cast to it (sometimes caused by dyeing hair with
an ash-based colour), a red-based product is used to neutralise the green.
154
The colours opposite each other on the colour wheel are also opposite in terms of
tone. That is, warm colours neutralise cool colours and vice versa. For example,
red (warm) and its opposite colour green (cool) neutralise each other.
Completely neutralising the effect of a tone achieves a neutral shade that is neither
warm nor cool.
What Media Hairstylists Should Know
Hair and makeup artists should understand colour theory for hairdressing. We
often have to do things like temporarily cover up highlights for a period
production. Working on stage or under media lights can affect how hair colour
looks.
When we look at hair during a production, the colour we see is influenced by
several factors, including:
The pigments in the hair itself, which absorb some light and reflect others.
Natural hair is made up of many colours and absorbs light better than
synthetics, which can be very shiny.
155
The brightness and colour of the light in which we are looking at the hair.
Therefore, the perceived colour of the hair can change depending on the type
of lighting and how bright it is.
Coloured lighting gels can affect how the hair looks on camera or stage.
To some extent, the costume worn by the person can affect hair colour, as
some materials can reflect light.
The environment or things in it can also have an effect on hair colour.
To summerise, understand how lighting affects colour, and how the materials used
for costumes and sets can reflect onto hair and skin. Also, it is good to know how
the different hair used in wigs or false hair can look on camera or stage.

3.2.Характеристика групп красителей.
Characteristic groups of the dyes in the art of hairdressing
Types of hair colors
In the market of modern cosmetology, manufacturers offer women three large
groups of paints - natural, chemical and physical. Each listed group has certain
advantages, has some shortcomings and is intended to achieve the set goals.
Natural hair colors - characteristics
Natural hair dyes are those substances that "provided" nature for use by
women. They were used also by our grandmothers and great-grandmothers, but
even now this kind of dye remains quite popular. The natural hair colors include
:
basma;
tea leaves;
onion husks;
lemon juice;
some herbs that have dyes - for example, chamomile or sage;
henna;
Oak bark.
The listed products are absolutely safe for hair, they paint them and at the same
time make the strands strong and thick.
The most popular natural dyes are henna and basma - a powder from Indian
herbs.Henna gives the hair a red with a slight copper tinge color, and basma color
the curls in a chocolate-chestnut shade. Before using these dyes, you need to know
one feature of basma - if you use it without henna, then your hair will become dirty
green after staining.
157
The distinct advantages of these natural dyes include:
safety;
environmental friendliness;
is an exceptionally beneficial effect on hair health;
provide an opportunity only to shade the natural color of the curls, not
affecting when staining bulbs.
But you should not flatter yourself, even such natural and useful dyes have a
number of drawbacks:
after henna, in no case should you use other hair colors;
shades are too weak - for example, to become a blonde with natural dark
hair just will not succeed;
henna and basma dry hair, after repeated application of these dyes, the curls
will become thin, dry and brittle;
the choice of colors in natural dyes is too limited.
Characteristics of chemical hair dyes
All dyes that offer retail outlets belong to the chemical group. They are divided into
three types - persistent, unstable and semi-stable.When choosing a particular
species, you need to be guided only by what goal you need to achieve by staining.
Non-fine paints
Implied shade shampoos and balms, which are designed to shade the natural color
of the hair, but not for a full repaint. The advantages of such unstable chemical dyes
include fast washability( literally 5-8 times), the ability to give the locks a rich
color and the absence of destructive effect on the hair. But there are chemical
unstable paints and drawbacks - for example, they can not fully dye dark hair and
are completely powerless on gray hair.
Semi-resistant paints
158
similar kind of chemical dyes is more resistant, the result of staining can last for up
to 3 months. In addition, semi-permanent paints qualitatively cover the gray hair,
can change the hair color to several shades, but not crucially. It is worth
remembering that such semi-permanent hair colors have an adverse effect on them
- they are not as safe as shade shampoos and balms, but they are not too harmful,
like persistent dyes.
Persistent paints
The so-called coloring agents, which include ammonia or hydrogen peroxide. They
have an extremely aggressive effect on the condition of the hair, but they are able
to radically change their hue - even dark hair when using this type of dye is
clarified for 4-5 tones.
Features of physical paints
These dyes are classified as temporary, presented on the market with mousses,
carcasses and powders. The pigment contained in physical paints is not able to
penetrate the interior of the hair, interaction with keratin does not occur. This
means that the acquired color is washed very quickly - it is enough to wash the
head 2-5 times.
This type of paint is absolutely safe for hair and allows you to change your image
frequently.
The algorithm for choosing a hair dye
In order not to be mistaken when choosing a dye, it is necessary to strictly
follow the recommendations of specialists:
1. Determine with the task.If the goal is a cardinal change of hair color, a
woman is sure that she knows the right shade, then you can immediately get
persistent or semi-stable dyes.It is important to remember that the image of
the result indicated on the package is unlikely to be reached - for example, it
is unlikely that it will be possible to turn from a burning brunette into a
platinum blonde after one staining.
If you just want to experiment, then you can choose a tinted balm or a physical
paint.
1. Read the composition of the dye.As a rule, the choice of women falls on
chemical paints, so you need to carefully study the composition of the
chosen remedy to avoid the disastrous results of staining. What you should
pay attention to:
159
percentage of hydrogen peroxide - the lower this value, the safer the hair
dye.Optimal choice will be the use of paint with 6-9% content of hydrogen
peroxide in the composition;
The presence of ammonia is a bad sign, there is a high probability that the
hair will become dry and with split ends. The paint with ammonia in the
composition will color the hair more qualitatively, but it will also have an
unfavorable effect on the curls;
includes additional components - it is about vitamin B, proteins, oils and
elements for protection against ultraviolet radiation.Their presence in the
hair dye makes it safer, and even in some ways useful;
if there are no salts of heavy metals - if manganese, lead or zinc are found,
then the purchase of such a dye must be discarded;
expiration date - even with the delay of this indicator for 1 month to buy
paint is not necessary, because the chemicals that are in its composition,
have already entered into a reaction and can behave unpredictably on the
hair.
1. Determine with color and hue. Before you go to buy a hair dye, you need to
honestly answer yourself the following questions:
Was hair dyeing done before?Do you have gray hair in your hair?
What is the natural color of hair?
Used earlier for dyeing basma or henna ringlets?
What color or shade do you want to get as a result of the procedure?
Having received answers to the listed questions, it is possible to decide what
specifically to buy - persistent paint or coloring agents, dark color or light. If henna
hair was previously stained, then it is necessary to refrain from using chemical
dyes and wait until the natural hair is completely grown back.
160
As a rule, the manufacturer directs the dye results table directly on the dye
package.Naturally, the lighter the natural color of the curls, the brighter and more
saturated will be the shade after staining.
Choosing a tone on the color-type
. Women are conventionally divided into four groups-the color-type: "spring",
"winter", "summer", "autumn".And each group has its own characteristics, which
allow you to choose the "right" tone when staining.
Woman Spring
Most often, the representatives of this group have a fair skin color and blue(
alternatively - pale green and light blue) eyes. The color of hair for such ladies is
suitable wheat, light blond, but the red and black shades are categorically not
suitable.
"Spring" women are suitable for chestnut, warm light, fair, golden with a rustle,
wheaten and straw colors.Strongly red, platinum and black shades are not suitable.
Female Summer
This type of woman is considered the most common among the Slavs,
characterized by brown( pale), gray or blue eyes and light olive or pinkish
skin.Representatives of the color-type "summer" are silver, brown-haired, light-
brown and dark-brown shades.And categorically "counter-indicative" burgundy,
golden, red and red colors.
Woman Autumn
Women with this color are different brown and green eyes( the colors are
pronounced), swarthy skin with golden tint and freckles, chestnut or red hair. The
color of the "autumn" lady is red, and absolutely all its shades will suit her.
161
Woman Winter
It is clear that such ladies are considered "cold" - dark eyes, dark hair and
porcelain-white or, conversely, dark skin.It is for women of the color type in
question that you can safely experiment with your hair color.Perfect red, maroon,
eggplant, pink and blue shades of curls.Categorically do not fit "winter" ladies
lemon, straw, green and platinum colors.
International color selection chart for hair color for staining
There is a clear algorithm for choosing a shade for coloring curls, which refers to
the international assessment system.
Step 1
The international scale offers to determine your hair color according to the table
shown below
Step 2
162
It is necessary to determine what results will please - cardinally changed hair color
or slightly shaded natural. If there is no desire to repaint, then you need to choose a
hair dye that begins with "your" figure.
Step 3
Often on the dye package you can see a three-digit number or a two-digit number
through a fraction. For example, a woman determined that her natural color is dark
brown, which corresponds to the figure 6. She chooses a suitable paint and sees the
designation 6.XX or 6 / X.What do these second / third digits stand for? This is the
shade number:
0 - natural;
1 - blue ash;
2 - lilac ash;
3 - golden;
4 - copper red;
5 - purple red;
6 - red;
7 - khaki( marsh);
8 - pearly ash;-
9 - cold ash.
If two digits are specified, it means that the color will be complex, with a sub-
tone. For example, the original hair color is dark brown( number 6 in the first table
of international standards). There is a desire to slightly shade it and give a rusty
tone.In this case, the woman should purchase the paint with the number 6.4, 6.5 or
6/46.
Please note: , some manufacturers use the literal designation to determine the tone /
subtlety of the paint. It will look like it is shown in the table.
The choice of hair dye is considered to be a very important "measure".Since 50%
of the excellent appearance depends on the hair color, it is recommended to consult
a specialist - the paint will be chosen competently, the result of staining is sure to
please.

International Colour Charts for Hairdressing
Here’s our guide to colour charts for hairdressing. Hair tint products have a code
and description to give us an idea of how dark it is and what tones are in the
finished colour. While many brands use their own in-house system, there is also a
global numbering system called the International Colour Chart. It is this system we
look at in this post.
The International Colour Chart
The International Colour Chart (ICC) is a numerical system used worldwide to
classify hair colour. It means that each hair colour has a definition that is
recognised around the globe.
Consequently, this can be used on hair colour charts and tubes or boxes of hair
dyes. This creates a level playing field for hairdressers worldwide. Whether or not
they choose to use it is another thing.
How It Works
Each hair colour is given a number, which tells us two things:
The depth of the colour – also known as the level or base
164
If there are any tones in the colour
The depth number is usually separated from the tone number by a dividing
symbol like a decimal point, a slash or a hyphen. For example, 4.6, 4/6, 4-6 all say
the same thing as far as the ICC goes. A 4.6 translates into plain English as “a
medium brown base with a warm red tone”.
However, not all hair colour brands use the ICC and simply use their own in-
house numbering system. For instance, letters may be used to represent the
different tones, like R for red, or M for mahogany and V for violet.
Even if a brand does use the ICC system, the finished colour can vary from
product to product. This means that one brand’s number 4.15 could look slightly
different on the hair to another brand’s 4.15.
It’s not a perfect system, but the ICC goes a long way to trying to standard how we
define hair colouring products.
How Depth is Numbered
Depth is given a whole number from 1 to 10, where 1 is the darkest hair colour
(black) and 10 is the lightest (lightest blonde).
Some brands also use 11 and 12 on their colouring products to account for the
blondest of the blonde. As you can see in the picture below, numbers 1-5 are
browns and 6-10 are blondes.
The depth is also known as level or base colour. Whatever term you use, it is
classed as a neutral colour.

3.4.Осветление и обесцвечивание волос.
Lightening and discoloration of hair.
How to Lighten Hair Naturally: And Add Highlights
1. Lemons
First, lemon juice, diluted half and half with distilled water, will lighten dark blond
or light brown hair and won’t leave reddish tones unless your hair already has
them. Indeed, this is the most widely used natural hair lightener for a reason.
2. Vinegar
So vinegar, like raw apple cider vinegar, will leave reddish highlights in the same
hair color. To start, mix apple cider vinegar 50/50 with distilled water. Next, spray
it on all over to lighten all of your hair or apply with a cotton ball or brush for
strands of highlights. Lastly, leave on for 30 minutes, rinse out, and dry as usual.
In truth, of all of these options, I’ve used this natural hair lightener the most.
Because I have naturally reddish tones to my hair and try to keep it looking natural.
3. Peroxide
Begin by diluting the hydrogen peroxide half and half with water. Next, apply as
directed above and test after 15-20 minutes. Note that peroxide will lighten quickly
without the worry of drying out like commercial hair bleaches. Lastly, once you
get to the shade you want, rinse your hair well. Indeed, for those wanting to
know how to lighten hair, peroxide is another very popular method!
4. Chamomile
My grandmother used to swear by chamomile to lighten darker hair. First, brew a
really strong cup of chamomile tea and let it cool. Next, apply to individual strands
of hair for highlights, or pour over entire head for all over color. Lastly, go out into
the sun and let it dry, usually about 30 minutes. Finish by washing out and styling
as usual. (Find dried organic chamomile here.)
5. Henna
On most hair, henna will only darken, but on very dark brown or black hair, henna
can lighten and leave reddish highlights. Use about 3 tablespoons of henna powder
to a ½ cup of boiling water. Let this sit for 12 hours or overnight. Then apply to
166
your hair and let sit for 2-3 hours. Wash out well and style as you normally would.
(Find henna dye here.)
6. Honey and Olive Oil
I’m not sure the exact mechanics of how this works, but it creates nice subtle
highlights and softer hair. Warm ¼ cup of honey and add ¼ cup olive oil. Stir well
to combine. Apply to your hair where you want the highlights and leave on for 30-
60 minutes. About 5 minutes before you wash it out, work it into all of your hair,
focusing on ends. Wash out well. If you are using the shower to wash it out, be
very careful as oil can create a very slippery surface.
7. Cinnamon
Take a half a cup of your normal conditioner and add enough cinnamon powder to
make a thick paste. Apply this to your hair and leave on 3-4 hours or overnight.
The longer you leave it, the richer the color. In the morning (or at the end of the 3-
4 hours), wash it out well and style as you normally would. This will also soften
your hair and leave it nice and silky. Bonus: cinnamon has antioxidants and
natural sunscreen that will protect your hair from the damaging rays of the sun.
8. Honey and Vinegar
If you’re learning how to lighten hair, why not get both for the benefits of honey
and vinegar at the same time? Use 2 cups of raw apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of
honey. Add a tablespoon of warmed coconut oil and blend together well. Apply to
your hair, wrap in an old towel, and leave on overnight. Shampoo out in the
morning.
9. Rhubarb
This is another old favorite of my grandmother’s. She told me to use ¼ cup of
chopped rhubarb to 2 cups of water. Boil these together and strain the juice. (You
can add some sweetener and make a nice toast spread with what’s left!) Then after
the juice has cooled, apply it to your hair and leave on for 10 minutes. Wash out
well. Rhubarb contains pectin and will get sticky if left on your hair too long.
10. Baking Soda
Simply make a paste with warm water and baking soda to lighten your hair. First,
take about a ½ cup and add enough warm water to make a medium paste. I say this
because if it’s too thin it won’t cover well and if it’s too thick it will dry out
quickly and not work either. Now apply the paste and leave on 15-20 minutes.
Check your hair to see what it looks like. If you are happy, wash it out. If you want
it lighter, leave it on a bit longer.
167
11. Vitamin C
You can crush 8-9 Vitamin C tablets and mix into the amount of shampoo you
would normally use on your hair. Shampoo as usual and follow with conditioner.
12. Salt
Dissolve 1 tablespoon salt (any kind) with ½ cup of warm water. Leave on 15
minutes and rinse out. We all know how salt will highlight our hair after
swimming in the ocean. Now you can do it at home. Be sure to follow up with
our Sea Salt Spray to get those nice beach waves!
Notes on Results of Natural Hair Lightener
When talking about how to lighten hair naturally, I should point out that results can
and will vary. Everyone’s hair is different and will absorb color or lose color at
different rates. The ingredients and the type of water you use will all vary,
resulting in slightly different outcomes.
Allow plenty of time and have fun experimenting with natural hair lightener.
When it comes to the many types of hair colour, is your brain left in a spin? We
understand, we’re feeling dizzy ourselves. But don’t worry, because if you’re
looking for a colour transformation, yet don’t know your ombre from you
balayage, you’re in luck…
Below we break down the different types of hair colour with all the need-to-know
deets on the various colour techniques available on the market. And to top it all off,
our inspiration gallery will ensure you walk away with a clear idea of what your
next hue will be. Enjoy!
Permanent Hair Shades
Permanent colours never go out of fashion.
168
Permanent shades are the same as temporary colours on appearance, but whereas a
temporary colour will begin to fade relatively quickly, a permanent colour fades far
slower. Note: although it is called ‘permanent’, there is no ever-lasting colour, but
it can remain vibrant for longer if properly cared for.
Most types of hair colour are available as a permanent option and it is often
regarded as the most popular choice for women when it comes to trialling different
types of hair colour.
However, if you’re thinking of colouring your hair and want a more natural finish,
we suggest starting out by using a temporary colour. Then, when you’re ready to
commit, stick to shades that are no more than 2 shades darker than your natural
hair
Temporary Hair Colour
Just like permanent hair colours, you can’t tell whether someone has a temporary
colour by the naked eye (unless you are a hair colourist maybe).
The huge appeal of temporary hair colours is that you can experiment with all the
latest hair colour trends (like this silver hue) without the full commitment.
Be warned, though, that temporary hair colours tend to gradually fade after each
wash, so be prepared for the colour to change throughout this time – especially if
you do go for colours like pastel or opal hues.
Hair with Highlights
169
Can anyone remember life before highlights? The colouring technique was the
original way to achieve sun-kissed tresses (before balayage that is) but that’s not
all they are good for, oh no.
Highlights help to add a multi-dimensional effect to the hair and, if thoughts of
those caps with the little holes pop into your mind, rest assured that highlights have
come a long way since then – thankfully!
Lowlights
While highlights help to lighten strands of hair, lowlights do the opposite by
working to darken the hair. Often used in a combination with other colouring
techniques, lowlights add depth and dimension to your hair hue.
This colouring technique is ideal for those with lighter strands who want to test the
waters with a dark hue, without getting an all over colour. Lowlights can also help
hair appear thicker and more voluminous, making it a great colouring technique for
ladies with fine hair.
Balayage Hair
Balayage hair has fast become the hottest, most requested colouring technique
thanks to the long list of A-list stars rocking the look. This freehand colouring
technique offers a natural finish that can be as heavily or lightly coloured as you
like.
170

Ombre Colour
Ombre is a shadowing technique used to seamlessly blend two colours, with hair
generally being darker at the roots and gradually fade into a lighter shade towards
the tips. While it sounds relatively similar to dip-dye, the aim of an ombre is to
have no harsh lines between the two shades, making it a more elegant look.
From Lily Aldridge to Drew Barrymore, all the big names have been spotted with
an ombre and thanks to its low-maintenance appeal, it’s the perfect colour choice
for those who don’t want to be burdened by regular touch-ups
Root Colour
This new colour trend is a surprising entry when looking for different types of hair
colour. From Selena Gomez to Hailey Baldwin, celebrities and Instagram girls are
deliberately colouring their roots a darker colour. But why? To achieve a more
’90s grunge look of course.
171
Henna Hair Dye
If you’re looking for something different when it comes to types of hair colour,
you will love henna. Not just reserved for body art, henna is fast becoming the go-
to option for those looking for a natural chemical-free way to colour their tresses.
And that’s not all. How you colour your hair with henna may not be how it turns
out for your best friend. Why? Because henna works with your existing hair
colour, so all results will vary on each person and give you a totally unique hue!

Hair Chalk
Ready to have some fun? Of course, you are, then hair chalks are just what you
need.
From festivals to party styles, hair chalk is a super fun way to be creative with your
hair and once the night is over, you can simply wash out the colour (but not those
memories)
172
The 10 levels or depths of hair colour.
How Tone is Numbered
The tone number comes after the decimal point and each tone is given a number
from .1 to .9.
Products can have up to three tones in them, though one and two tones are most
commonly seen. The number of tones in a product is indicated by how many
numbers follow the decimal point. For example, a 4.15 has two tones in it and a
5.016 has three tones in it.
Primary & Secondary Tones
The primary tone is the first number after the decimal point, and the second
number is the secondary tone.
The primary tone is more dominant and has more influence over the final colour
than a secondary tone. Likewise, any third tone used will be less influential over
the final colour than the other two tones used.
Example showing how one depth, in this case a 5.0, is changed by adding tones.
The 5.1 is a cool ash; 5.13 has a nude or cool beige affect; 5.3 has a warm gold
173
tone; 5.34 a primary tone of gold and secondary of copper; and 5.4 has a warm
copper tone.
The ICC Numbers for Tones
The ICC numbering system for tones is not followed by all hair tint brands.
Therefore, it is important to know how that particular brand labels its tones.
Other Aspects of Tone Numbering
Zero is used to indicate how intense a tone is. For example, a 4.06 is a medium
brown with just a hint of red, creating a warm coffee colour. On the other hand, a
4.60 is a medium brown with a more definite and obvious red tone to the hair –
even more than a 4.6 would have.
A double-number tone means a greater intensity and vibrancy of that particular
tone. For example, 4.66 means a really vibrant red tone on medium brown hair.
Mahogany (a mix of red and purple) is normally used with another tone in hair
colour, rather than just on its own. Mahogany is neutral, meaning it is neither warm
nor cool. Therefore, the tone that it is paired with determines whether the final hair
colour is warm or cool. For example, 4.15 is a cool colour, whereas 4.56 would be
a warm colour.
174
Hair Colour Chart Examples
Each brand lays out its hair colour charts for hairdressing differently, though they
are generally logical. For example, they are usually organised into columns or rows
with the tonal groups (like mahogany, red or ash) kept together.
Below are some examples of hair colour charts to see how they are laid out and
how the ICC is used.

3.5 .Мелирование волос
Highlighting the hair.
Hair highlighting/lowlighting is changing a person's hair color, using lightener or
haircolor to lift the level or brightness of hair strands. There are four basic types of
highlights: foil highlights, hair painting, frosting, and chunking. Highlights can
be any color, as long as it's a lighter level than the surrounding hair. Hair lightened
with bleach or permanent color will be permanent until new growth begins to
show. Highlighted hair can make the hair appear fuller. Therefore, it is sometimes
recommended for people with thin and fine hair. It also a recommended service for
achieving better color balance with people that have at least 50% gray, and it also
helps to diminish the line of demarcation once the new growth is showing from
permanent hair color.
Basic foil highlighting
Foil highlighting is the process of using foil to separate strands of hair which will
be lightened from strands of hair which will remain its natural color. The process is
done by applying lightener to the hair that has been woven and separated using an
applicator brush. The foil is then folded to protect the hair and surrounding area
during the "processing" time. This is the amount of time required to achieve the
desired results. In highlighting hair, hydrogen peroxide mixed with pigment is used
to change the color of the strand. This process is also used in applying "lowlights"
to the hair. In this process, hair dyes are used to create strands of hair that are
darker than the natural color.
Hair painting
Coloring a young girl's hair with temporary spray paint
Hair painting is a method of highlighting hair that uses free handed technique to
achieve a highlighted effect. Hair painting methods are permanent and employ a
hair-painting brush. Foils, plastic wrap, paper, or cotton may be used to separate
lightened hair from non lightened hair. While brushes are commonly used in hair
painting, one may also use combs to paint or highlight thin-sized strands of hair.
177
Balayage (from the French, meaning "scanning, sweeping") is a technique
of free-form painting on clean, styled hair. The results are subtle, and thus
more natural-looking than foiling or chunking. Balayage in its many
variations is currently trending in Hollywood.
Leopard hair highlights, or leopard hair print, consist in creating hair
highlights with a leopard pattern. The process to create leopard spots effects
can be realized first bleaching in spots a hair tuft and then coloring with a
brown tint the external parts of the bleached spots. It is even common to use
funky and eccentric colors for this effect. This kind of hair process started as
urban Street fashion as new trend, in fact is often combined with weird
haircuts. Gallery and How to Leopard hair print. It is possible to apply the
leopard hair print both on long hair tuft or on shaven head parts. Another
similar motif used for spot hair highlight is the cheetah hair pattern.
Frosting
Frosting a process of lightening trends of hair while leaving the adjacent
hairs untreated. A highlighting cap may be used with this technique. Hair is
pulled through holes in the cap and that hair is then lightened. The effects of
this can give the hair a look that is "salt and pepper" with a decent amount of
hair left untreated. It will create a stark contrast between the colors and will
usually not resemble natural highlights. This is a popular technique for those
with shorter hair.
Chunking
Chunking is a style of highlight which is larger and thicker than a traditional
highlight, rather than to a method of creating highlights. Chunky highlights
are generally offered in a wider variety of bold natural colors, as well as a
large number of artificial, or unnatural, colors and are used to create more
contrast, rather than subtle texture, as in traditional, thinner highlights.
Safety concerns
It Is recommended that these services be performed by a licensed
professional to achieve desired results. It is always important to read all of
the manufacture's directions on any chemical applied to the skin or hair. The
FDA bans the use of hair dyes for eyelash and eyebrow tinting or dyeing
even in beauty salons

Braiding hair .Hairstyles with braids
Braids (also referred to as plaits) are a complex hairstyle formed by interlacing
three or more strands of hair. Braiding has been used to style and ornament
human and animal hair for thousands of years in many different cultures around
the world. The simplest and most common version is a flat, solid, three-stranded
structure.
Are you just done with heat-styling your hair all the time? Tired of hair looks that
don't last the whole day?! Do I have the solution for you, my friends. Braided
hairstyles are practical, long-lasting, perfect for summer (or any time of the year,
really), heat-free, and they look incredible, which understandably, makes them a
classic go-to style. But if "classic" has begun to mean "boring" because you feel
like you always stick with the same ol', same ol', then you need a little braid inspo,
and we're here to give it to you.
Below, we've rounded up 23 of the best braided styles. But since some of us are
more gifted in the hair department and can give themselves box braids in the time
it takes others to google “how to braid,” we made sure to include something for
every skill level. So whether you consider yourself a beginner braider or an expert,
you'll definitely find something on here to try—or ya know, you could always beg
your talented friend to do it for you.
179
1. Box Braids
Box braids are always a good go-to protective style if you've got the time (you
could always go with jumbo braids to make the process a little faster), and there's
lots of room for customizing the look exactly how you want it. Take, for instance,
the look shown here, which features a few different shades.
2. Half-Up Braided Hairstyle
If you're looking for ways to style your box braids, aside from wearing them down
in all their glory, a scrunchie is always a good idea. Leave a few braids down
around the face, then gather half of the braids up to the very top of your head and
tie them in a half-up, half-down hairstyle.
3. Braided Ponytail
Not your average three-strand braid, this ponytail braid stands out from the rest,
thanks to the perfectly laid edges, dramatic length, and the blink-and-you'll-miss-it
tiny braided detail wrapped around the base of the pony.
4. Two-Tone Braids
Braids are a really easy way to try out a bright, bold hair color without needing
temporary hair dye. As you braid, just weave in some hair extensions in whatever
shade you want for a little pop of color.
5. Baby Braids
If you can do a three-strand braid, you can pull off this look yourself, no prob. Hair
tendrils around the face are here to stay forever (or at least they're still trending for
fall 2020), and this braided version is nice little twist on that look.
6. Fulani Braids
One of the best parts about braided hairstyles are the never-ending options for how
to wear them. Case in point: these Fulani braids on a lob or bob haircut, which are
just one example of how to wear this braided style.
7. French Braids
Wear your French braids tight and down your back, or muss them up and pull out
your bangs and a few pieces for a beachy braided look, like the one shown here.
8. Dramatic Braided Ponytail
180
This show-stopping ponytail is made even better by all the hair clips and barrettes
attached to the tail. With all these embellishments, you won't even need to wear
other accessories or jewelry.
9. Cropped Braided Ponytail
This braided side ponytail hits that sweet spot of being a '90s-inspired hairstyle and
a cool, modern look. Go with a style like this for when you want a bit of both.
10. Knotless Braids
If you love the look of box braids but not the feel, go with knotless box braids for a
similar effect but with less tension on the scalp.
11. Fishtail Braid
Once you've figured out how to fishtail braid, incorporate it into all your favorite
hairstyles or just wear it simple and down your back like the one shown here.
12. Cornrow Braids
Another extremely versatile braided hairstyle, cornrows can be worn a million
different ways, but the example shown here features straight-back braids of equal
widths.
13. Pigtail Braids
Say it with me: simple is not boring. Styling the hair tight and slicked to the head
gives this braided pigtail hairstyle a sleek finish that doesn't read too young.
14. A Braided Bob
Everything about this braided bob feels cool and classic. Experiment with different
parts, lengths, and angles to give your bob a totally different feel each time.
15. Pierced Braids

Piercing your ears? Kind of a commitment. Piercing your braids, though?! You get
the feel of stacked jewelry without all the fuss. Looping a few metal hoops through
your braids instantly up the edge factor.
181
16. Braided Braids
Braided braids sounds redundant, but once you get a look at this style, you'll see
what I mean. One quick way to temporarily switch-up your braids is with larger
three-strand braids all over, like the ones shown here.
17. Crown Braid
One classic braid choice for longer hair is the crown braid. You can achieve the
look by Dutch braiding the hair around your head (like the look shown here), or for
an easier version, you can fishtail or three-strand braid your hair and wrap the tail
around your head.
18. Braided Bun
Even if your hair wasn't originally styled into a braided bun, you can still create the
look with box braids by wrapping them into one yourself. Whether you decide to
leave a braid or two down to frame your face is up to you.
19. Cornrows Into a Ponytail

Instead of wearing the cornrows all the way down your head, stop them half way
and gather the rest into a loose ponytail and add extensions if you want a little
added length, why not?!
20. Infinity Braid

Picture an infinity symbol. Now, imagine creating that figure-8 shape with your
hair, and you've got yourself an infinity braid like this one, which is similar to a
fishtail braid but has a tighter, more polished look.
21. Embellished Braids

Sometimes all your braided hairstyle needs is a little color. Grab some string or
thread in whatever shade you want (and use a crochet tool if you need to) and
weave or wrap the string around and across your braids however you want.
182
22. Lemonade Braids
These side braids (aka Lemonade braids) are the perfect hairstyle for summer if
you want to keep your braids off your neck, but TBH they look just as good any
time of the year.
23. Boho Braids

Boho braids are all about keeping the look organic, easy, and not too perfect.
Instead of braiding all the way down to the ends, leave some braids undone at
varying lengths for a really effortless, easygoing vibe.

attached to them. This means that you can simply take the wefts and easily clip
them into your hair all by yourself, without any additional costs, time, or

looking to get thicker hair and longer hair instantly, without the hassle, long-term
commitment or breaking the bank.
2. What are the best hair extensions for me?
The best hair extensions are those that blend in well with your hair and also that fit
your lifestyle. For example, if you shower often, dance, work out, swim, or play
sports on a regular basis - perhaps it is best to consider temporary methods of hair
extensions such as clip-in hair extensions, because they can easily be taken out for
the duration of those activities and clipped back in when needed. Not only will this
will ensure proper hygiene and will also make your hair extensions last longer, but
will also be less damaging for your own hair. To learn about what set will be right
for you, please click here.
3. How much do hair extensions cost?
You can expect to pay anywhere from $60-$85 for synthetic hair extensions, and
anywhere from $100-$500 or more for human hair extensions. We highly
recommend purchasing real Remy human hair extensions as they are much
higher quality than synthetic hair extensions as you will be able to style and wash
them just like your own hair. Luxy Hair 20” remy human hair extensions range

The lifespan of clip-in hair extensions will depend on how well you take care of
them, what products you use on them, and how often you wear them. With proper
care and regular wear, Luxy Hair extensions last anywhere from 3-6 months up to
a year or even longer. For best tips and tricks on how to care for your hair
extensions, check out this blog post.
184
5. Do hair extensions damage your hair?
The type and application methods matter when it comes to hair extensions. Some
more permanent hair extensions can cause damage due to the bonding, gluing, and
pulling on the hair. Clip-in hair extensions are the least damaging option as they
are simply clipped into your hair like any regular hair clip. Additionally, since you
are not sleeping with the extensions in or wearing them non-stop for a long period
of time, this reduces the amount of pulling and stress on your hair, which results in
healthier hair. Clip-in hair extensions cause absolutely no damage to your hair.
6. How do I clip in hair extensions?
With a little bit of practice, clipping in hair extensions is very fast and easy!

stay securely in your hair without showing. We have multiple step by step tutorials

9. How do I style hair extensions?
Clip-in hair extensions can be styled in a variety of different ways to help you
create a thicker and longer hair style, or to even add a pop of color to a certain look
(our ombre collection does a great job at achieving this).
Clip-in hair extensions can be styled in a bun, ponytail, braid, and even curls! The
options are endless.
For more hair inspiration, we recommend to check out our YouTube channel as we
post weekly tutorials on how to style and wear clip-in hair extensions.
10. If I have curly hair can I still wear clip in hair extensions?
Yes! Even if you have curly hair, you can still wear clip-in hair extensions. Luxy
Hair extensions are made of 100% Remy human hair and will come straight. In
order to achieve an ideal blend, we recommend having your hair straightened or
relaxed in order to match the texture of the extensions.
They can also be styled to curls or waves using hot tools. Here is a super helpful
tutorial by our lovely friend, India, who shows how to blend extensions with her
naturally curly hair.
You can also air dry your extensions overnight (in a braid, for instance), and when
you wake up and clip in your set you will have gorgeous, beachy waves ready to
go. Plus, you can also experiment with different curl patterns without having to
buy an array of curling wands. Find out 4 ways to air dry your extensions.
11. How long does my hair have to be to wear hair extensions?
We recommend for your hair to be at least 6-7 inches (this is around shoulder
length) in order for clip-in hair extensions to blend naturally. If your hair is any
shorter, you may experience some trouble with hiding the wefts in your hair.
186
12. Will hair extensions blend if I have short hair?
As long as your hair is at least 6-7 inches long, which is around shoulder length,
clip-in hair extensions will blend. The reason why this is the recommended length
is that your hair needs to be long enough in order for the clips to secure to your
hair sturdily, and to ensure that the clips do not show through your short hair. To
learn about which set to pick, click here.
Halo extensions on the other hand, are best for those who have below shoulder
length hair and have a thin or medium hair type. We do not recommend the Halo
extensions for those with short hair as you will need more wefts and hair to create
a seamless blend. You can definitely wear the Halo in addition to a full set of clip-
in Luxy Hair extensions (180g Seamless or 220g Classic).
13. What are the best hair extensions for short hair?
Clip-in hair extensions are a great resource for short haired ladies who either got a
haircut they regret, have difficulty growing out their own natural hair, or just want
to have the option to rock both long and short hair whenever they want. To learn
about what extensions to pick for your short hair, please click here.
14. What are the best hair extensions for thin hair?
Hair extensions are a great way for adding thickness to thin and fine hair, without
causing any damage to your natural hair or hindering hair growth in the meantime.
To learn about which set to pick, please click here.
For tips and tricks on how to blend in Luxies with thin hair we recommend

16. Should I get hair extensions?
There are many reasons why you should get hair extensions.
I. Length
If you experience hair loss or have difficulty growing out your natural hair,
hair extensions help you achieve long hair again, and do not hinder hair
growth in the meantime.
If you got a bad haircut and want to cover it up, hair extensions will do just
that.
II. Color
If you want to change up your look and add in highlights/lowlights or
ombre, but don't want to damage your natural hair or don't want to fully
commit to the look, hair extensions will allow you to be experimental with
your hair without the full-time commitment.
III. Volume
If you suffer from hair loss or thinning hair, hair extensions will help you
achieve the volume you once had.
If you simply want to opt for a more voluminous hair look on special
occasions or even for everyday use, hair extensions will create your hair
dreams.
IV. Style
If you want to change up your look, hair extensions will help make any
hairstyle more fuller and longer.
V. No Damage
Hair extensions allow you to get experimental with your hair and different
looks, without hindering your hair growth or causing damage to your natural
hair. Other hair extension alternatives like bonding or tape-ins can cause
damage to your hair.
VI. Ease of Use
Hair extensions are super easy to use - they can be clipped in and out of your
hair in a matter of minutes! To find out how, click here.
For a more in-depth look as to why you should get hair extensions, click here.
188
17. Will my hair extensions be obvious to others?
If clipped in properly, once your hair extensions are clipped in, they are virtually
undetectable. The base of each weft is thin and flat, and all wefts come with sturdy
clips with a silicone grip to keep each weft in place. The wefts are clipped in
between layers of your own natural hair, to blend naturally and seamlessly. Don't
believe us? Check out this video to see how Luxies are clipped in - they look
totally natural.
If you have thinner hair, check out this helpful article to learn how to completely
hide your extensions.
18. When can I wear hair extensions?
Clip-in hair extensions are a quick and easy way to achieve long, full, thick hair in
just minutes, with no damage to your hair. They can be worn every day to add
pizzazz to your daily look, for special occasions, weddings, birthdays, and
everything in between. You can wear a full set, or just a few strategically placed
wefts, depending on your hairstyle...the possibilities are endless! Check out our
Hair Blog for hundreds of ways to wear your extensions and our top 6 reasons to
wear hair extensions.
Clip-in hair extensions can be worn anytime, however, we do recommend to
remove them every night before bed, as they are only meant to be worn daily. We
do not recommend to wear your extensions while sleeping, showering, swimming,
or doing physical activity.
19. Can I curl and straighten hair extensions?
Yes! Hair extensions that are made with 100% remy human hair can be curled,
straightened, blow-dried and styled, just like your own natural hair.
In order to preserve and extend the lifespan of your Luxy Hair extensions,
however, we suggest to always use a heat protectant spray or natural heat
protectant prior to styling your set.
Additionally, we recommend to only use a low heat setting of 120C/250F, as
anything higher runs the risk of damaging the hair. While our own hair may be
able to handle a high heat setting, our hair is also constantly getting revitalized
from the scalp, whereas hair extensions don't get that sort of constant nutrition.
Using a low heat setting will prolong the lifespan of your extensions. Better yet, try
out heatless ways to style your extensions!
189
20. What products can I use on hair extensions?
Since hair extensions do not get consistent nourishment from the scalp like natural
hair, it is important to choose the right products to keep your extensions looking
and feeling luxurious.
When selecting products for your hair extensions, we recommend to use organic
hair products whenever possible. Check out this article about why organic hair
products are so awesome. If you are unable to get fully organic hair products, we
recommend to at least choose alcohol-free and sulfate-free shampoos and
conditioners, as these ingredients can dry the hair out, leading to frizziness,
matting, or tangling. We recommend to use high quality products specifically
formulated for dry and damaged hair, as they will help keep the strands healthy and
nourished.
We also highly recommend to use a heat protectant spray prior to heat styling your
Luxies and nourishing hair oils or serums, which will prolong the lifespan of your
Luxies. Here is a list of our top 3 natural heat protectants.
21. How to wash and dry hair extensions?
Since hair extensions do not receive natural oils from the scalp like our own hair,
they do not need to be washed very often. We suggest only washing your Luxies
every 15-20 wears or when there is too much product build-up and they become
unmanageable to style. Please keep in mind that the less you wash your Luxies, the
longer they will last you.
We highly recommend using sulfate-free and alcohol-free hair products, as these
ingredients can dry the hair out, leading to frizzy, tangly hair.
You can wash your Luxy Hair extensions the same way you would your own hair,
in a sink filled with water. Apply shampoo first, rinse off, then apply a generous
amount of conditioner from top to bottom, working the product through the hair.
Rinse off the conditioned, then rinse the extensions again in cold water to lock in
moisture. Next, apply a deep conditioning hair mask throughout the extensions, to
restore smoothness, nourishment, and shine. Here is a list of our favourite DIY hair
masks. Brush each weft with a wide tooth comb from bottom to top to work the
hair mask through the hair and remove any tangles. Leave the hair mask in for at
least 4-6 hours or overnight for best results! Finally lay each weft flat to air-dry on
top of a towel on a flat surface.
Please watch this video for detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to wash your
extensions.
190
22. How to brush hair extensions?
Just like your natural hair, hair extensions can and may tangle, as all long hair
does. We recommend to brush your extensions before and after use, as well
as throughout the day with a paddle brush or detangling hair brush - here is a
handy hair brush guide, and here is a tutorial showing how to brush clip-in hair
extensions.
When brushing your extensions, we recommend to brush the hair from bottom to
top to gently loosen and smoothen any tangles in the hair. For tips on how to avoid
tangling with both your hair and extensions, click here.
In order to keep your extensions in the best shape possible, we recommend
watching this video about care tips for your hair extensions.
23. Can I dye/color my hair extensions?
Yes! Since Luxy Hair extensions are made of 100% remy human hair, they can be
dyed a darker color or toned by a professional hair colorist, who has had previous
experience in working with hair extensions. If you are a hair expert and would like
to tone your extensions yourself, please view this video for detailed instructions.
Of course, if you are ever unsure, we do recommend that you have a professional
help you out.
We strongly do not recommend getting hair extensions colored a lighter shade, as
it will require them to be bleached. Bleaching is a harmful chemical process that
can alter the quality of your set, and even damage it.
If you are in-between shades, we recommend going for the lighter colour and
taking your set to a professional hair colourist to have them dye your set a darker
shade in order to achieve an overall match. Similarly, if you have highlights, we
recommend going for a shade that matches the lightest highlight in your hair, and
having a professional hair colorist add in lowlights to your set.
If you do decide to get your Luxies dyed, we recommend for a one clip weft to be
tested first prior to dyeing or toning the full set, to ensure that you are satisfied
with the results.
24. Can I sleep with hair extensions?
We do not recommend sleeping with your Luxies in, as they can get tangled during
sleep, causing damage to the extensions as well as your natural hair. Since they
only take a few minutes to clip in, and seconds to remove, please do this daily to
maintain the integrity of the hair.
191
25. Can I swim with hair extensions?
No, we do not recommend swimming with your extensions clipped in or getting
them wet (except when washing them). Chlorine from swimming pools, salt from
ocean water, and dirt in all bodies of water can be damaging to your hair
extensions. Also, swimming with your extensions clipped in may lead to the
extensions tangling with your natural hair, which can be damaging.
If you would like to wear your extensions in the water, make sure to tie your hair
up to avoid getting them wet.
26. Can I play sports with hair extensions?
We recommend avoiding doing any physical activity that could lead to excessive
sweat when you are wearing hair extensions. Remember, your sweat is salty, acidic
and can dry out your hair extensions so this could lead to additional matting and
tangling, causing your hair extensions to deteriorate faster. To increase the lifespan
of your extensions, try to minimize their exposure to sweat. Instead, be sure to un-
clip them before heading to the gym!
27. Where can I buy clip-in hair extensions?
You can buy clip-in hair extensions online on our website at www.luxyhair.com.
It's fast, easy, and you get FREE shipping right to your door. If you have any
questions, you can consult our help page or contact our support team at
[email protected], who is always here and happy to help you.
28. What is Remy human hair?
Remy hair is considered to be the finest quality of human hair because the cuticles
are kept intact and not stripped, like in most other non-remy hair extensions.
Preserving the hairs’ cuticles and aligning them in a unidirectional fashion creates
extensions that are completely natural in appearance. This process ensures that the
hair remains super soft, shiny, silky and completely tangle-free throughout its
lifetime.
Clip-in Luxy Hair extensions use only the finest quality of Remy human hair,
which means that the hair has been carefully sorted after collecting from the hair
donor to ensure all the cuticles are intact. It is by far the best quality of clip in
human hair extensions on the market because of the care that is required and the
time it takes to sort the hair so meticulously. Click here to see how and where our
products are made.
192
What is the difference between synthetic and human hair extensions?
You can expect to pay anywhere from $60-$85 USD for synthetic hair extensions,
and anywhere from $100-$500 USD for human hair extensions.
Hair extensions made from human hair can be dyed a darker colour, styled with hot
tools (curled or straightened), washed, and treated just like you would your own
natural hair. You can basically make your hair goals come true.
On the other hand, hair extensions made from synthetic hair are sensitive to the
sun, are difficult to style and blend with your own hair, and typically don't have the
same lifespan as human hair extensions. Human hair extensions can last up to a
year or longer if they are properly cared for.
29. What are the different types of hair extensions?
Micro link/Micro bead/Micro-ring/Loop Hair Extensions
This type of hair extensions is applied by looping the single-strand micro-bead
extensions through your own hair and clamping down with a pair of pliers and a
metal bead to finish. So pretty much, your entire head is covered in these little
beads. You need to go to a professional for the application of micro-bead hair
extensions.
Sewn-in/Weave Hair Extensions
Sewn-in hair extensions are only a good fit for those who have super thick, coarse,
or naturally super curly hair. Your own hair is braided tightly into corn rows
throughout your entire head, and the extensions are then attached using a needle
and a thread. A pro about these hair extensions is that they work super well for
girls who have tons of hair that is thick and a coarse, however, a con is that the
tight braids seriously strain your scalp, therefore they are not advisable for those
who have thin hair. Also consider hygienic reasons - it may be difficult to wash off
the sweat and dirt in the scalp because the entire scalp is covered in cornrows. You
need to go to a professional for the application of sewn-in hair extensions as well
as consistently visit the salon (even six weeks or so) to ensure that the extensions
are still sewn in correctly into place and if the braids need to be tightened up again.
Clip-in Hair Extensions
Clip-in hair extensions is the fastest, easiest, and least damaging type of hair
extensions which you can apply all by yourself without having to go to a
professional. Clip-in hair extensions are a temporary method of hair extensions,
which means you can clip them in and out whenever you want. Clip-in hair
extensions are ideal if you are looking to add length and volume to your hair
without the commitment or breaking the bank. Clip-in hair extensions are a popular
193
choice among women all over the world for bridal and bridesmaids’ hairstyles as
they can greatly enhance any hairstyle. You need to take off your clip-in hair
extensions when you shower, sleep, or swim, however, clipping them in takes only
about 5 minutes. Always choose real remy human hair extensions as you will be
able to heat style and wash them just like your own hair. High quality clip-in hair
extensions will last you anywhere from 3-6 months up to a year or even longer,
depending on how often you wear them and how well you take care of them. Luxy
Hair extensions are all high quality 100% real remy human clip-in hair extensions.
Tape in Hair Extensions
Tape in method of hair extensions involves taking each weft and literally taping
them onto your own hair. The wefts are connected by wide bonds of tape and your
own hair is placed between them and clamped around the strands. Pros to this
method of hair extensions is if you wear your hair extensions without a break,
these can last in your hair for 6-12 weeks. Some cons to tape in hair extensions are
that it can be difficult to tie your hair up how you want it since you can’t reposition
the wefts after they are applied, and they can also begin tangling with your own
hair as it starts growing out. You need to go to a professional for the application of
tape in hair extensions.
Glue-in/Keratin Bond/Pre-bonded Hair Extensions
These hair extensions are attached to the hair with keratin bonds that are on top of
the extensions, which are fused with a hot tool. This technique requires heat for
application, and consistent visits to the salon to maintain them. They can look
great, however, it is best to voice using oils, conditioners or any hot styling tools
because this can weaken the bonds and make the extensions come out.
-----
Regardless of which type of hair extensions you choose, overall, be sure to have a
few consultations with hair extensions technicians to understand the full scope of
getting permanent hair extensions and if they are right for your hair type. Always
be sure to check how they look both dry and wet, to understand how the hair will
react on a daily basis. Always make sure that the extensions aren’t applied too
tightly to your scalp as that can cause stress to your scalp and damage to your hair.
If you choose clip-in hair extensions, you won’t have to worry about having a
professional apply the hair extensions, as you can do it all by yourself at home -
without any damage.

Biological perm. Care for the hair after perming.
When you have a modern perm, all you have to do to get perfect beachy waves is
basically roll out of bed. The treatment has the ability to totally take the place of
your daily 20-minute morning meeting with a curling wand, but it's not completely
free of maintenance. In order to keep your the freshly set texture in-tact, there's a
few very important rules you need to follow when it comes to applying heat,
styling, and the products you choose. Consider this roundup of pro tips your
modern perm after-care manual.
Immediately After the Perm
That whole speech Legally Blonde's Elle Woods gave was legit. After perming
your hair, celebrity hairstylist Sascha Breuer says you'll need to wait three days
before getting it wet. "I only recommend washing sooner if you want to break up
the curls to achieve a softer, semi-permanent beachy waves look," he adds.
For a week, steer clear of any styling, other than simply scrunching the hair with
your fingers to set the curls in place. "Even the most basic hairstyles or hair
accessories can potentially cause your perm to break or set in a unwanted shape,"
says Breuer. That also includes not brushing your hair with a hairbrush. At most,
you can finger-comb your curls, or if you have to, use a wide-toothed comb in the
196
shower after applying conditioner. When you go to bed, wrap your hair in a silk
scarf to protect the perm. Finally, Breuer recommends staying away from chemical
treatments, which could potentially disrupt your perm, for at least a month after
your perm.
But really, you shouldn't be freaking out about how you're styling it on the day-to-
day. "One of the best bits about perming hair is that you don’t have to agonize
about styling daily: the look is a major statement in itself," says Breur.
The Rules of Heat Styling
"On the whole, it’s best to avoid heat styling as much as possible," notes Breuer.
Swap out regular blow drying for air drying, and if you have to use a blow-dryer,
be sure to attach the diffuser. "Straightening tools should also be avoided because
permed hair tends to frizz out more than natural hair and heat styling causes split-
ends to appear much faster in perms, all of which means that your curls break up
sooner than you’d want," he says.
Ideally, the modern perm would make it less necessary for you to plug in a hot tool
in the first place. If you do want to heat style in any form, Breuer says to coat your
hair with a heat protectant—he loves Wella EMEI Thermal Image Spray ($18;
ulta.com). "The spray works on two fronts: creating a protective barrier that holds
up against extreme heat and smoothening hair follicles to prevent frizzing so that
your curls stay healthy and glossy."
The Rules on Products
Your haircare shelf might need a mini makeover. Try to avoid hair products that
are made with alcohol and silicones. "Alcohol will dry out your hair fast, leaving it
brittle and frizzy and ruining the perm," notes Breuer. "Silicones wear heavy,
making hair greasy and weighed-down. If you can’t avoid these ingredients, at the
very least you’ve got to look for products that carry these in a minimal
concentration."
For your shampoo and conditioner, go for moisturizing curl-enhancing formulas,
but be sure they're not ultra-creamy, which could weigh down your perm and
disrupt the shape of your curls. Since the idea is finding a balance between
cleansing your curls and clearing build-up and enhancing them, try deep cleansing
on a weekly basis. "You want to give your curls extra nourishment and protection,
against the elements and artificial stressors like heat styling tools, so look for
products that are protein-rich," adds Breuer.
How to Care for Permed Hair
Getting a perm involves using chemicals to permanently reshape your hair. A
perm, or permanent wave, can be great way to alter kinky or curly hair, or to help
197
get rid of lanky, or straight hair. Because getting a perm requires applying strong
chemicals to your hair, the process can damage your locks if you don’t use proper
care. By letting your perm settle immediately after the perm, washing it gently, and
using sensible styling techniques, you can care for permed hair.
1
Touch your hair sparingly. It can be tempting play with your new curls or waves.
But it can take the perming chemicals anywhere from 24-48 hours to lock the
shape in your hair permanently. In addition, your hair will still be fragile from the
process. Leaving your hair be for a couple of days can help ensure that your hair
maintains its shape for the longer term.
Use your fingers to style your hair only as necessary during this time. You
should also avoid brushing or combing your hair.
2
Avoid washing your hair. For this first 24-72 hours after you get a perm, don’t
wash or condition your hair.[1] This keeps the water or other chemicals from
deactivating your perm and making your curls fall apart. It can also help keep your
perm fresher for a longer time.[2]
Make sure to keep your hair as dry as possible, especially if it is raining or
snowing outside.
Ask your stylist how long you should wait until washing your hair. The
length of time may depend on your hair and the type of perm you got. If you
absolutely can’t wait to wash your hair, call your stylist to find out the best
way to handle the situation. She may suggest using dry shampoo or another
product until you can get your hair wet.
3Keep it loose. You may want to make the most of your new perm with different
styles that require pins, barrettes, or winding your hair. You may even want to get
your hair out of your face to play sports or study. But because your hair is still
settling from the perm, it’s important to let your locks flow loosely for a few days
after your perm. Putting your hair in a ponytail, braid, or other style that requires
accessories can reshape parts of your hair with dents and may even break off
fragile hair.[3]
You should never run your fingers through your hair with a perm because it
can break up the curls and make it looser.
Use a silk scarf to gently pull back your hair if absolutely necessary. Make
sure to tie it as loosely as possible to keep your hair back without leaving a
mark.[4]

198
Stay away from color treatments. Keep in mind that permed hair is often stressed
and needs a lot of love. This is especially true during the first week after a perm.
Avoid getting any type of color treatments on your hair for at least a week after
your perm. This can avoid causing your hair further stress or damage and may even
prevent your hair from breaking off.
Talk to your stylist about scheduling your color treatment within a safe time
frame from your perm. It is best to get both your color and perm done by a
professional.
Consider using a hair tint, colored powder, or color shampoo instead of color
treatments because they are unlikely to harm your hair, unlike dye. Only use
these products 24-48 hours after you got your perm.
Even if you do wait at least a week to color your hair, you may still
experience breakage. The type of dye and the level of developer (if one is
used) can make a difference in how it affects your hair. Ask your hair stylist
what they recommend.
Choose specially formulated products. No matter what, permed hair needs
special and gentle aftercare. Getting specially formulated products can restore
luster to stressed and fragile permed hair. In addition, they can help maintain your
curls for a longer period of time.
Look for product labels with ingredients such as biotin, eucalyptus oil, and
soy. Avoid products with parabens and sulfates.
Avoid using products that contain sulfates.
Ask your stylist for product suggestions. Stylists have specialized
knowledge about the best products to use on permed hair. However, you
shouldn’t feel pressured to buy any products your stylist sells. You can also
buy products for permed or chemically treated hair at most large retailers,
grocery stores, pharmacies, and beauty stores. Read the product labels,
which may say “for permed hair” or “for chemically treated hair.”
Shampoo your hair weekly. Cleaning your hair can keep your curls fresh and
bouncy. But washing it too often can strip your already delicate hair of essential
oils and make your perm relax faster. Treat your permed hair like silk or another
delicate fabric: washing it once a week is enough to keep it clean and help maintain
its beauty.
Wash your hair with warm water. Hot water can strip your hair of oils that
help keep it moisturized and looking lustrous. Hot water can also ruin the
curls.Make sure to thoroughly rinse with warm or cool water. Lingering
residue in your hair can weigh it down and make it dirty more quickly.
Chemicals in the residue may also keep your perm from staying fresh over
time, requiring repeat perms.
199
Use dry shampoo on your roots if your hair gets dirty in between washes.
Spray a small amount ten inches from your roots and let it absorb for a
couple of minutes. Then, gently massage the rest into your scalp to remove
any residue. Consider a dry shampoo for chemically treated hair that can add
some moisture and volume[
Condition regularly. Even the gentlest perm can strip hair of moisture, making it
look dull and frizzy. Although some think that conditioner can relax your perm, it’s
actually a myth. Conditioner formulated for permed hair will restore moisture and
luster to your locks, keep your hair soft, and make your perm last longer. It also
helps detangle curls.
Apply conditioner first by putting it on your ends, which are the driest part
of your hair. Then extend the conditioner up towards your roots. Leave on
the conditioner for the time specified by your product. Use warm water to
rinse out the conditioner. Make sure that all of the product is removed.
Remember that not rinsing long enough can leave residue that will weigh
down your curls, make them appear dull, and can attract dirt to your hair.[12]
Comb your wet hair using a wide-tooth comb while the conditioner is still in
it. This will minimize hair breakage.
Use a treatment mask for permed or stressed hair once a week. Treatment
masks are heavier than your usual conditioner and can give your hair an
occasional boost of moisture. They can help keep your hair from getting
more damaged and restore moisture and shine. Either leave on your
treatment mask in the shower or consider putting it on overnight with a
shower cap.
Consider using leave-in conditioning treatments if your hair is very dry or
stressed.
Use a wide-toothed comb. Detangle your hair carefully with a wide-toothed comb
after you’ve finished rinsing your hair. Don't comb your hair too often to avoid
breaking or damage your strands. This can also make your hair frizzy and lose its
shape more quickly than if you only comb after a shower.[14]
Make sure the teeth of your comb are spaced widely apart so that your curls
are not split into little pieces that may frizz.
Comb your hair after you’ve applied conditioner while it's still wet, which
helps prevent breakage. If you comb while in the shower, you shouldn’t
need to comb it again once you’ve rinsed.
Use your fingers to comb your hair if you don’t have a wide-toothed comb.
Avoid brushing. No matter how you detangle your hair, never use a brush on
permed hair. This will separate your curls and can cause your hair to be frizzy. In
addition, brushing may damage delicate permed strands.[15]
