INTERSCHOOL SPELLING BEE 2018
Teacher in Charge: Mrs R. Burgess Year 9 Spelling Bee
Teams: Year 9 - James Pinfold-Whanga, Cory Pinfold-
Whanga, Benjamin McQueen-Davis, Lukas Richardson.
Year 10 - Alex Anderson,Tommy, Dunn-Hall,Thomas Flynn,
Ajay Ravji
On Monday 19 November 2018, a Year 9 and Year 10 PNBHS
Spelling team travelled to Feilding High School to compete in
the Interschool Spelling Bee.There were approximately eight
teams competing at each year level. The Spelling Bee was
a mix of English and Te Reo Māori words or ‘kupu’ as known
in Māori. Some examples of words we had to spell included
loquacious, Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and as silly as it
sounds, bildungsroman. We were also required to provide
definitions of words and, in one round, provide translations
for Māori words such as whakapapa (genealogy), kōrero (to
speak) and Te Waipounamu (the South Island).
At the end of the Spelling Bee, we were presented with the
results and the PNBHS Year 9 team placed second whilst
the Year 10 team placed fourth. Afterwards, we stayed for a
debating workshop that included mini moots which PNBHS
clearly dominated. Ultimately, it was an amazing day that I
recommend to anyone to take part in.
