Volleyball at school is well supported. In Term I, the school
fielded 12 teams and in Term IV we have 11 teams. Volleyball
at school level is a social sport with the boys able to choose
their own teams. Some even found female friends and
entered the mixed grade. For those who wish to develop,
there are opportunities to trial for the school competitive
teams which play in the local Adult Volleyball league every
Monday night from 6pm.
JUNIOR 2018
We must congratulate last year’s Junior team who travelled

WATER POLO
Teacher in Charge: Mr J. Ross
Water Polo continues to grow as a sport at Palmerston North
Boys’ High School. This year we have had 55 students play
in our PNBHS competition during Term I with some intense
rivalry displayed. There has been a change in the structure of
water polo with two teams playing in the Senior Secondary
School Wellington lLeague before a Premier A team was
selected for Nationals. This structure will continue going
forward.
Jake Thompson has continued to show his prowess
being selected in both the Born 2003 and Born 2002 New
Zealand Water Polo squads. Jake was also the top goal
scorer for the Manawatu Senior Mens team. Rhys Ransom
was selected for the Born 2004 New Zealand Water Polo
squad. Angus Beck, Campbell Jackson, Alex Odom,
Oliver Sexton, Matt Tait and Levi Timms also all played
for the Manawatu Senior Mens team during the year.

games, they beat Hutt Valley High School 17-10 and
Rongotai College 10-4, but lost 10-9 to Hutt International
Boys’School (HIBS). The team was through to the A division
and then played a round robin against HIBS, St Pat’s Town,

JUNIOR A WATER POLO KAP7 FESTIVAL
The Junior A Water Polo played in the KAP7 Water Polo
Festival in Taupo in October. The tournament was against a
number of quality sides from throughout the North Island.
In the round robin phase the team lost to King’s 10-8 and St
Kent’s 8-5. The team had wins against St Pat’s Town 13-4, St
Peter’s Auckland 9-8, Mount Maunganui 7-6 and Tauranga
Boys’ 10-6. These results meant the team played Tauranga
Boys’ in the Bronze medal match.
The Bronze medal match against Tauranga Boys’ was
incredibly tight throughout with the lead swapping hands
no less than 5 times. After regulation play the scores were
locked at 9 all so the match headed to penalties. We were
very clinical is our shots and our goalkeeper Leo Nikolaou
was a wall. The team won 12-10 on penalties to claim the
Bronze medal. This tournament was a great lead up to the
Junior North Island Secondary Schools tournament later in
late November.

ZAKEA PAGE
BACHELOR OF CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION
A hockey stick, a ball and Chinese ink might seem like unlikely painting tools. But for Zakea
Page, they’re what he uses to blend sport and art. Since beginning his Creative Media
Production degree, he’s found a community that has helped lift his creativity and sense of
self. “The peers, mentors and friendships I’ve developed at Massey,” he says, “have really
helped me elevate my craft and myself as a person.” Now only in his second year, Zakea
has become the first New Zealander to design an Olympic medal. A great start to an artistic
career – especially for one intent on pushing the boundaries of what performance art can be.

From the Old Boys’ Office
Since the last newsletter, the office has grown! Our office has had something of a face lift. In addition, we have created a meeting
room in part of the space we occupy. Many thanks to the OBA who paid for the carpeting of this area. In addition to being a meet-
ing room, this area also serves as storage space for our ever-growing archival collections - in particular our collection of Palmersto-
nians which goes back to 1907 - the first edition.
Our office has grown in personnel too. As you know, Rachel Wenham, wife of Gary Wenham, now runs the finances of the OBA
(most efficiently). In addition she gathers in sponsorship for various sporting codes as well as being the event organiser of many
Old Boy and school functions, such as the various meals of the 1979 1st XV reunion and the Mother/Son and Father/Son breakfasts
that have started this year. Maz Sujau has also joined the office with roles in event organisation and school marketing. He has great
design skills, as well as a background in marketing having worked previously for Sport Manawatu. He also involved with Massey
University Senior A rugby, but we won’t hold that against him.
Some of the activities we are involved in include assisting local chapters of Old Boys organise local functions, an on-going thrust
to make or re-make contact with Old Boys, keeping Old Boys informed with what is happening at school, as well as providing news
of Old Boys around the world through our half-yearly newsletters. We do encourage you to send us articles and stories about what
you have been up to, news of other old boys (including those who have passed away) and we would particularly like amusing
stories of your time at school (provided they are not illegal or libelous!!) This newsletter has accounts of some of the the events so
far this year.

ANZAC 2019 at School
The well-established tradition still continues - ANZAC address by two Year 13 students who focused on why New Zealanders
went to war eighty years ago; the whole school passing through the double row of 203 crosses; laying wreaths at the flag-
pole and at the Gallipoli Oak (this year carried out by Alan Cull and Jim Kelly) and reading the rolls of honour at the service of
those who died in WWI, WWII and the Falklands. The pictures below capture some of these moments.
2019 PN Old Boys’ Golf Day
This year, the annual golf day profits were donated to the PNBHS Jazz Band who were travelling to a Schools’ Jazz Festival
at Mt Gambier in South Australia. The band, under the direction of Old Boy Neville Lauridsen, did very well. There were over
5,000 students at this gathering and our band came first in their division of the competition.
Many thanks to Rachel, Stu and the parents of the Stage Band for a great day.

1979 1st XV 40 Year Reunion
This team, being the first team to have a World Tour which followed a very
successful season, have kept up regular reunions.
The reunion started with some members of the team coming to assembly
where Andy Robertson addressed the boys. He ended off his talk with
a tribute to Pat Poletti who passed away on the previous Monday. (On
Saturday, the 1st XV wore black arm bands in memory of Pat, which the
old boys appreciated.)
Stu Leighton then conducted a tour of the school. That evening, the party
assembled for drinks and nibbles at College House. About 15 minutes
after arriving the fire alarms went off, so the next half hour was spent
standing outside while the fire department did their thing!
On Saturday morning,
the full party re-assembled at College House for a brunch. Included in this
party was a group of supporters collectively known as the Tree Huggers. This
group which includes ex-staff members Rex Volkering, Than Nga Nagara and
Winston Hoare has its origins with Errol Brookie. They used to gather for home
matches under the trees on the northern side of the field (hence the ironic
name). When these trees were cut down, Rolf Leenards and his crew built a

Midday saw the start of a hard match against a very good Hamilton BHS team

How can I help?
Philanthropy, Stories and Artefacts
Philanthropy
There are currently two main ways in which you can make a contribution to helping the school maintain its standards and op-
portunities afforded to the boys of the school. There are two major projects coming up in the next couple of months which will
hopefully provide the school with an artificial hockey turf and an Old Boys Pavilion. You will be kept informed as soon as these
projects kick off.
Currently, we have the Good Buggers Club in which you make a automatic payment monthly contribution (eg. a weekly cup of
coffee is $20 a month!) These funds are adminstered by the PNBHS Foundation Trust and they are used to assist students who
have financial difficulties in meeting their requirements of being fully involved members of the School.
The White Jersey Club: This club is open to former members of the 1st XV, who make a $100 donation to assist the 1st XV with
the considerable costs of being a member of this team (eg. travel, gear etc).
Stories
Wearing two hats, Editor of the OB Newsletter and School Archivist, I put out an appeal for these:
Stories: We would love to publish stories from your time at school which will be amusing to others. In the last newsletter we
included the Infamous Bottle of Ink on the Brewery Building (‘Meat” Garrett(6568)). In this edition, there is an account of how the
boys put the wool over Music Teacher, Steve Delaney’s eyes.
There are hundreds of stories out there - do send them in to me. I will definitely keep them in the archives, and those that are not
too defamatory or rude, will be published in the newsletters!!
328 | THE PALMERSTONIAN 2019
In the same vein, please send me accounts of what you have been up to since leaving school. Your fellow students will be
interested in learning what you have been up to.
Memorabilia
As Archivist, I would really appreciate any memorabilia that you might be able to donate to us. Photos are especially valuable,
as are articles of clothing.
For example: We would love to get hold of a round neck black senior school jersey; a pair of Nomad shoes and the black duffel
coat that was popular in late 1980s.
We will also take into safe keeping items such as prefects badges, team caps etc. Over the past couple of years, families have
donated the medals of those who have served - these are framed and displayed in the Memorial Gallery.

I have had a really interesting exchange of letters with John

It started off with a request for contact details of Ian An-

We were able to help with Ian. We looked him up in the Palm-
