In the Deckchair

There are plenty of deckchairs on the ship for passen-
gers who do not want to do anything more strenuous
than sun-bathe. Pete
finds a seat in a quiet
place away from the
swimming pool
where he is able to
read a book in peace.
But after reading for
a few minutes his
eyelids get heavy and
he soon falls asleep.

At the Hairdresser's

The ship on which Sue and Pete are travelling has
many services on board. One of these is a fully equip-
ped hairdressing salon. The sun and seawater have
left their mark on Sue's hair so she arranges an ap-
pointment to have
it washed and styled.
The hairdresser
also suggests a new
haircut and Pete
hardly recognizes
his wife when she
comes back.

A Charity

In 1961, an English businessman, V. Stolan, founded
an organization for the protection of wild animals and
plants. This organization now has national sections in
23 countries - its headquarters are in Gland, Switzer-
land. The president is Prince Philip, Duke of Edin-
burgh. The symbol for this charity, which is mainly
financed by members' contributions, donations and
benefit performances, is the panda, an endangered
species.

A Media Man

We are looking for the person who owns the largest
media concern in Britain. He was born in 1923 in
Czechoslovakia as Jan Ludvik Hoch, but changed his
name completely when he moved to the West. At the
end of the Second World War he worked as a British
press officer. 1951 saw the beginning of the rise of his
company Pergamon Press. From 1964 to 1970 he was
a member of parliament for the Labour party.

What is the name ofthis man?

In the Casino

On board the ship there is also a casino. Pete decides
to try his luck at the roulette table. He changes some
money for chips and begins by placing his bets on the
colours. He doesn't get a great return on his money
when he wins but
he reckons he has
more chance of
winning that way.
In the end he has
five more chips
than he started
with.

A Famous Building

This famous building in New York was the highest
building in the world when it was completed in 1931.
With its television tower on top it is almost 449 me-
tres high. It has a viewing platform on the 86th floor,
but still has another 16 floors above it. It was the
highest building until 1970 when the World Trade
Center, also in New York, took over the title, only to
lose this honour to the Sears Tower in Chicago.

What is the name ofthis building?

Renting a Car

Sue and Pete arrange to rent a car through their hotel.
The car is delivered straight to the hotel and will be
picked up again afterwards. Since Pete is paying with
his credit card he doesn't have to make a down pay-
ment when he is
handed over the
keys. It is an auto-
matic car and Pete
has to get used to
the idea that he
can't change gears
manually.

A Glass-Bottom Boat

On the island where Sue and Pete spend their holiday
they can book a trip on a glass-bottom boat. Since the
water is so clear, the
passengers can see the

corals and the colourful ---u

fish in the sea through
the bottom of the boat.
One ofthe men on
board dives into the sea
to catch a star-fish so
that everyone can have
a proper look at it.

A Novel

This novel by H. Melville, first published in Britain in
1851, was originally entitled "The Whale". It narrates
the story of Captain Ahab who seeks revenge on the
white whale which has bitten off his leg. The book
consists of 135 chapters written in an extraordinary
variety of styles varying from sailor's slang to biblical
prophesy to Shakespearian English. Since the 1920s
this masterpiece has been recognized as an epic
tragedy of tremendous power.

Under which title is the book known today?

Back Home

When they arrive back home, Sue and Pete are faced
with a large pile of mail. After putting their suitcases
in the bedroom, Sue puts on the kettle for a cup of
tea, and they both begin opening the letters. Most of
the envelopes
contain advertise-
ments which end
up in the rubbish
bin immediately.
They also have a
few postcards
from friends on
holiday.

The Legal System

In Britain petty crimes are dealt with by the Magistrate's
Court. Magistrates are generally
people from other walks
oflife who are elected to
serve at the court. More
serious crimes are han-
dled by a judge. Many
people feel that the
system is outdated
especially when they
see the judge sitting
at the bench with
his wig on.

A Famous Treatise

This famous treatise on political economy was pub-
lished in 1776 by Adam Smith. It put forward the
view that labour of a nation is the source of its means
of life and insists on the value of division of labour.
Labour is the standard of value and originally the
determining factor of price. The second book deals
with capital, its nature, accumulation and employ-
ment. After this the author attacks the mercantile
system and advocates freedom of commerce and
industry.

Painting the Windows

Pete has been putting off painting the window frames on
his house for a long time. But since the paint has started
to peel off, he realizes that
he will have to start painting
before the wood begins to
rot. The worst part of the job
for him is sanding off the
old paint, but eventually he
is ready to start the artistic
part of the job - painting.

An American Novelist ?•

The novelist in question was born in 1896. His first
novel, "This Side of Paradise", brought him instant
fame. He married the glamorous Zelda Sayre, and
they embarked on a life of high living and big spend-
ing. They saw themselves as representatives of the
"Jazz Age". "The Beautiful and Damned" was follow-
ed by "The Great Gatsby" which was later made into
a successful film. His novel "Tender is the Night" is
considered to be based on his own life.

What is the name ofthis American author?

Weeding

Peter's and Sue's garden has been rather neglected
over the past few weeks. Now both of them agree to
do a bit of work in it.
The first thing will be to
get rid of all the garden
weeds which always seem
to grow bigger and faster
than other plants. It is a
job that Peter and Sue
do not especially like, and
it takes them the whole
afternoon.

A Visit to the Museum

Sue has been trying to persuade Pete for a long time
to accompany her to the museum. Before they were
married, they often went
to the art gallery, but over
the last few years Pete has
always found excuses not
to go. Either he has had
to work in the garden, or
he is too tired. But Sue
has been so persistent
over the last few weeks
that he has eventually
agreed to go with her.

186

The First Evening

Sue is attending her first lesson in painting with
watercolours. The instructor has arranged a still life
which the pupils are to paint. She asks them to take
their paper and paints out and then goes to each table
individually to see
how everyone is
getting on. Con-
sidering that Sue
has very little
experience, she is
quite content with
the result.

A Novel

The first novel of Alan Sillitoe published in 1958 also
provided the screenplay for Karl Reisz's 1960 film
which was a landmark in British cinema. The novel
deals with young Arthur Seaton, a lathe operator in
a bicycle factory. He became the prototype of the
working class "Angry Young Man", rebellious and
contemptuous towards any form of authority such as
management, government or army.

What is the name ofthis novel?

At the Hairdresser's

Pete needs a hair-cut and goes to the hairdresser's
near his office. When he walks in he is not quite sure
if he is in a hairdresser's
or a discotheque. Music
is playing loudly and all
the hair stylists, as they
like to call themselves,
are dressed in the latest
fashion. Pete just hopes
that they won't do any-
thing too wild with his
hair.

A Halloween Party

Sue's best friend has invited Sue and Pete to a Hal-
loween party. They both enjoy going to parties, bµt
when they hear that they
are exp_ected to wear fan-
cy-dress they almost re-
fuse the invitation. After
a lot of discussion, how-
ever, they agree to rent
costumes and go to the
party dressed as Batman
and Robin.

A Suffragette

She was born in 1858 and founded the Women's So-
cial and Political Union to invigorate the campaign
for women's suffrage. Together with her daughter
Christabel she began using slightly militant tactics in
1905, like chaining herself to the railings outside 10
Downing Street, the house of the British Prime Min-
ister. The movement forced Parliament to enfran-
chise women over 30 in 1918.

What is the name ofthis courageous woman?
